- In this episode of The Carry The Load Podcast, our host Todd Boeding chats with Navy Veteran Scott Friend about his time as a Seabee - a member of the Navy's Construction Battalion. This group of skilled builders is responsible for constructing much of the infrastructure at U.S. military locations around the world, from forward operating bases (FOBs) and contingency operating bases (COBs) to bunkers, tent camps and more.
This group faces the harsh realities of front-line fire to ensure their fellow servicemen and women like Army Rangers and SEAL Team 6 not only have places to live and work, but can also enjoy some of the basic comforts of home in otherwise uncomfortable warzones.

I just enlisted in the Navy and was given a Seabee rate. Leaving in a couple weeks for basic then A school, trying to get as much info as I can thanks for the interview this guy is very smart.

@@theredalpha7290 I'm currently a Seabee (EO) and prior service Army 8 years. You should wait and get into the BEES! We're dirt sailors (shore based) we're more of a family than the other squids, marines love us (we say oorah) we take care of each other and learn the other rates (jobs) so when you get to the civilian sector after your service, you have better chances of getting a good trade job! You're recruiter seems like their trying to push you... we need sea bees so try another recruiter or wait it out...trust me! Good luck future bee!
What do you need to score on the asvab to be a Seabee? I’m honestly really interested in perusing this career
@dariand8465 higher score the better but I scored a 38 and had 3 seabees choice but medical had stop me.

I was a Master Chief in Afghanistan in Seabee FOB , and I can identify with this story line completely. It was a get what you can, do what you can, no prints, no guidance. Just get the job done and get it done as quick as you can. Sleepless nights, half awake days. Yup! This is the life as a SeBee.

My dad was a Seabee in Okinawa in 1943-44, 45. He was almost 40 when I was born in 1964. Dad never talked about the war except to say that he did what his country needed him to do. He died when I was 34yo and I knew very little about he had done in WWII. Then when I would tell people (especially veterans) that my dad had been in the Seabees, I would hear, “Your dad must have been a badass!” I started researching and realized, yes, my dad was a badass. He’s my hero, the smartest, strongest, most generous and gentle man I’ve ever known.
25 year Seabee, I lived that life for a long time.

Proud of my one son, was a BU in Battalion 74. I was a Marine SGT. in Desert Storm, the Seabees did the most outstanding over there, huge respect for all of them.
During the 90’s the Seabees were under the microscope regarding funding and potential decommissioning. The
Commandant of the Marine Corps saved us. A point seldom discussed. I got know many of the original Seabees from WW2,Korean war era. Many were my mentors and unfortunately I saw the transition into what we have today. Prior to the Clinton era it was commonplace to have 1st classes and chiefs in their 40’s and 50’s. That era were the real tradesmen. When battalions were over 800 personnel. Awesome video and to be honest we Seabees don’t do enough PR.

I remember this timeframe, there was a bunch of Vietnam vets still around in the eighties. I do remember the rumor of the Seabees possibly going away and the Marine Corp Commandant going to bat for the Bees. I retired in 99 and I’m sure things have changed since then. I don’t remember ever having more than 500 packs in a battalion though. I did 58 months in NMCB 133 84-89. The deployment schedule was a killer. 9 and 6 but I was always advance party and main body coming back. Actually got extended one month on my first deployment due to waiting for a west coast battalion to relieve us. I want to say it was 5. Don’t miss the green machine. It was fun but spent a bunch of time away from my family.
I was told the same thing back in 1970 while in bootcamp but guess what , five of us were made seabee's . Everyone else went on the kitty hawk .
1987-1996 as a Builder in the seabees. went through Desert Storm. Without a doubt the best years of my life
I was a Marine first but I was tired of all the BS and more emphasis on spit shine boots and marching than getting the job done. I provided force protection for Seabees in Vietnam and I was impressed. Their officers and senior enlisted took care of the people. When I was discharged from the Marine I joined the Seabees and I loved it most of the time but 1000 percent better than Marine Corps. You will never hear a bad word about Seabees it is always praise for them and their work. I retired and those years were best of my life with the best people I have known.
Give the SEABEES the contract to build the Southern Wall. We will save money and have a better quality wall finished in record. Instead of sending them for Training, train them building the border Defences

Can anybody tell me what its like being a seabee as a reservist. I am prior service looking to get back in.
I'm prior service Army (8 years) and now in the navy reserves, bro its a different world in a good way. Go seabee EO you're motor-T you drive everything! plus you still learn everyone else jobs so its a win win. So here is how it goes for us priors before entry, talk to a prior service recruiter, they build you a packet with all your documents from your last unit, drivers license and other documents, you do a physical which YOU CAN DO at your civilian doctor with their stamped ID number for "fit to serve status" then they process you, you sign a contract (read carefully) and we get a 20k bonus which is a separate sheet to sign, then you face time oath of enlistment with a an LT or other higher ranking officer, wait a week for final processing then you're in! You'll report to the local NRC unit to in-process, medical, bonus approval, uniforms, speak with the senior chiefs (they're cool, just be squared away), do online courses (standard) get your ID, etc... Also, report in business casual unless you have navy uniforms or they will say something lmao!!! I started out in the NRC for about a year then my local (cross assigned sea bee unit picked me up and now I drill with them (I gets confusing at first then you settle down.) Is it worth it? Yes, PT is mostly gym time and PRT tests are easy, seabees are like family but you still have the high speeds looking out for themselves, You will gain job skills and feel real good about being back in the gaggle lol so do a short contract and feel it out then decide if you want to go long term especially for that pension bro. i got eo with a ship date of oct 29th so not too bad i’d say it was easy they wanted me to be a seabee
