I was an AD (Aviation Machinist Mate). Basically a jet engine mechanic. I can honestly say I had a dream career in the Navy. Enlisted with a guaranteed school and was sent to a little shore based squadron in Miramar (San Diego) after graduating AD school. I did my 1st four years working on the flight line at Naval Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun). Got back seat qualified in our T-38’s so I could repair down aircraft at off-site locations and provide flight line services as needed. That sparked my desire to fly in whatever capacity I could. Talked to the detailer when I was up for orders and volunteered for flight duty. Got sent to aircrew school and then rescue swimmer school. After graduating I was assigned to an H-46 helicopter squadron home ported in San Diego. Became an 8215 SAR swimmer and an 8216 aircrewman. Still had to work on the aircraft as an AD when I wasn’t flying but now I had the additional duties of being a rescue swimmer and crew-chief. As a crew-chief I ended up learning every inch of that helicopter. Did that for 13 years with a little over 3,800 flight hours. I have both civilian and military open water rescues. Started looking at retiring so applied for and got accepted for a commission as a Warrant Officer (retirement pay is better). Finally retired but I still miss the Navy every day. Flight crew and Rescue swimmer are a kick in the butt. Did a huge amount of different missions. Great for an adrenaline junkie like me. Never a boring day.
When you went to Aircrew, was your Sub-rate AWF?
If so, were you able to choose the subrate?
Is aviation structural mechanic equipment safety a good job
I am currently in ad school and just finished my first test and loved what we have learned so far it interests me more than anything what you have done as an AD is awesome and what I want to strive for in my career
@@liamkane1095 Yep I started as E1 airman recruit and went as far as E7 ADC . Got a commission and finally retired as a CWO3. AD is a good career path if you can put up with all the military discipline. It’ll teach you real quick to be independent. Job security, vacation time, free medical, an education, and a retirement check with medical for life if you can do the time. As I said I was an adrenaline junkie so being a rescue swimmer and helicopter crew-chief was a blast. At least you got off that pitching rolling deck for awhile up flying in the helicopter. Missions were great also. I always felt I was on the tip of spear. Folks back home never had a clue as to what was really going on. Sure you have normal flights hauling passengers (Pax’s) and logistics flights which became boring after awhile but you also had those missions that really had you on the edge. Working with special forces and other countries military’s on missions was always an experience and exciting. I would just tell you to not to get discouraged, look at your options when they are available, but mostly enjoy the experience. It’s a whole different Navy then what you’ll see while your in school. Good luck in your career wherever it takes you. Fair winds and following seas shipmate.
I know several AE and AT Sailors that fly drones for a living with the Navy. Two left the Navy after 8-years to work as a contractor starting @ $200K yearly.
Hello
John Savastano, hello 😎
Just swore in today as AV
KOLACH3S *** same yesterday. When do you leave ?
I am from reservist and converting into active duty as an AE. Im so excited even in times like this.
I entered the Navy 2 days after I graduated from high school and after boot camp entered AT radar "A" school. This was in 1959, so we were taught Vacuum tube theory. After "A" school, I was sent to a 6 week "C" school on Transistor theory. Followed by Air Crew school for the Grumman S2F Anti submarine aircraft. I was sent to VS 31 squadron, deployed aboard the USS Wasp. It was a real thrill to take off and land on
a carrier and we saw a good deal of the world. For a young person, the Navy offered so much opportunity for both a life time education and to see how other people lived. I have six siblings and raised in a blue collar family. My folks took care of our basic needs but could not help with a college education. With my electronic back ground, I was able to support myself through college and obtained a BBA degree. I have used the knowledge gained in the Navy throughout my entire life. The Navy has wonderful schools and provides unparalleled life experience. I would encourage anyone to explore the advantages the Naval service offers.
Scored a 91 on my asvab and I’m picking my job tomorrow, I’m so excited. Thanks for the video
wow 91? damn what job did you get
how is a 63 on the asvab?
@@firstwave3463how is a 63 on the asvab?
Nicky & Josh I just watched your video. I was stationed at NAS Pax River, MD is the early 90s. Worst job in Naval Aviation is definitely a Plane Captain (launch and recovery of aircraft). You are also responsible to moving aircraft in/out of hanger, washing, fuel samples, pre-flight prep (fueling, charge air components, set up of start-up gear, etc.)
I was an Aviation Ordnanceman onboard USS Enterprise CVN-65 from 86-89. I loved my job and I’m extremely proud of it!! I worked in AIMD Ordnance. IYAOYAS!! ❤️🇺🇸⚓️❤️🇺🇸⚓️
I just choose that job today
I went to Adj school out of boot camp, then to VA-44, A4 training squadron, then to VA-106, I was a plane captain, later the leading line po. Loved being around the planes and the pilots. Made two WestPac cruises.
This videos are always so helpful. Thank you! Going to OCS as an NFO selectee.
What were your ASTBE scores,f I may ask? Reason being I am applying for SNA & NFO next boards and stressed about my scores.

@@christopher2183 Nice job! Your gpa is an important consideration as well.
As a guy who spent time as an ABH in the 90’s he is absolutely correct .
just signed my contract as an AE, very excited!!
How many 20 tips have you stripped now 😂
The AM rate rules! I'm not saying it's the best, but they own the aircraft.
When others strip fasteners, who do they call?
When the others need access to certain compartments, who do they call?
Who mainly runs corrosion?
Airframers!!!
Good to know! Thanks!
PAX is my home. Been here my whole life, love seeing the aircraft fly.
My personal opinion- Different aviation rates will vary in difficulty based on which aircraft you are maintaining. All aviation will have possibilities of extra long hours, schedule changes, constantly having to balance studying and training for your next qualification with completion of jobs at hand. Very physically and mentally taxing especially for O level maintenance but also can feel very rewarding for people who want hands on work.
ADJ here worked mainly on J-79's (F-4's) back in the day. Not the rate I put in for but what I ended up with. Everything you just mentioned plus midnight fire watches. Personally, I hated it because of all of that.
I remember being up on the deck and watching an ame an holding onto his po’s belt still get blown off the deck. I asked him later what he remembered. Quote”falling and a helicopter coming!”.
if you aren't flight deck qualified you ain't squat and can't talk about it. Spent 3 tours as a trouble shooter for va-23. Best excitement anywhere, especially at night with no horizon.
Going in as an OS December 3rd. I’m so excited
Stay warm girl!!
Itsshala G yikes good luck 😂😂 if no one tells you the truth I will that shit sucks😂😂😂😂😂
Probably a 2nd class now
how is it
Yo bro Josh! I wasn't expecting to see you on this video. You're absolutely right about AB's having one of the worst jobs in the navy! All day All out in the weather! Jet blast, HELO down wash, you name it! we are there! it also doesn't help that our advancement rate sucks so bad that we don't advance as fast as the other rates (unless you're just booksmart) you'll make ABH1 in no time. Thats one of the reason why us AB's are so prideful because when we say we earned our crows we earned it! At least thats how I feel! But it is what it is! I learned to love what I do despite the challenges we face.
Just signed on as an ABE, thanks for the words of encouragement :)
Same i go to rtc on dec16
Good fucking luck, noone besides an ABE like myself knows about what you're about to experience.. im praying for you
I was an AT in vf2. Maintaining f14s as an electrician was a nightmare. I'm sure the job is better with newer aircraft. I would say the job is better or worse depending on your assignment, and the assignments do vary greatly. The flight deck is very dangerous. I once ran out into the middle of the flight deck while the arresting gear wire was being retracted. I had to jump over it. I could have lost my legs or died if I didn't notice it. I got me into a lot of trouble back then. Keep your head on a swivel
I was on an LHD and the guys on the flight deck would come down with all kinds of injuries. Not really enough to fly off, but definitely saw the castes.
I'm an ABE stationed in Souda Bay, Greece working on land E-28 Arresting gear. I'll be going to the IKE in January.
if you want to talk about greece on the channel let me know.
I can absolutely do that for you.
My son is headed to Souda Bay today ( 7\14) ❤
I just signed for ABE what should I expect?

How can you rate aviation jobs yet have no flight deck experience? Why not show pictures of him below deck playing cards
I was an AQ (Aviation Fire Control Tech) Started off non rated working an A7 squadron out of Lemoore. I got to go to Avionics school after my first cruise and then assigned I-level working ATS. Our shop worked on the F-14A, S-3, E-2C, and some navigation from the A6. Got trained on the maintenance / calibration bench. Cal lab hated us because they could not do Calibration on our equipment and we had to use the same standards they were using. I also spent time as an Instructor at AVA school. My last assignment was working on the Admirals Staff of COMLATWINGPAC in training. We were writing and giving test to the squadron techs before they deployed. Ended up having to get out on disability after getting run over by a civilian operating a forklift carrying a centerline drop tank. I was in from 75-88,
I was an aircrew man from before the time Aircrew was strictly an AW rating. Being Aircrew is an interesting experience and definitely is one of the coolest jobs in the Navy. However it does come with some downsides. You will be held to way higher standards than regular aviation sailors in terms of job performance, appearance, personal conduct, and training requirements. You will also live by the flight schedule and must check daily if/when you are flying, it can greatly interfere with personal life.
Why am I just seeing this. Haha thanks for the shout out. 🔱🔱🔱
hooyah Air Crew! I graduate on Thursday!

After serving in the Ceremonial Guard Washington DC.for a yr. In 69 then a yr. As hot suit fireman on LPD3 Lasalle. Went to AD school memphis then to VF 211withF8j at miramar with 2 tours of nam on CVA 19 HANCOCK. The flight deck was so small it would fit on the hanger deck of the enterprise we joked. The deck was wood covered with none skid an had to replace some areas during in port periods. She was small but mighty. The flight deck is nothing but controlled chaos on any size deck but wouldn't change a second of it...
I was an aviation machinest mate (Jet Engine Mechanics) in the Navy. I enlisted with a guarantee to be trained as a Jet Engine Mechanic. I intended to get my A&P license after my tour of duty. Life doesn’t always go as we plan.
After my enlistment I took a job selling insurance. I had no intention of doing that the rest of my life, I wanted to go to school and get my A&P license and then get a job with the airlines.
As it turned out I was a hell of a good salesman. Within a year I was making more money than I ever dreamed I could make. I was the leading agent in sales for my state and second in the entire company. I eventually ended up owning my own agency.
Like I said, ya never know where life is going to take you. I can assure you selling insurance for a living was never on my list of careers. I eventually obtained the equivalent of an under graduate degree in insurance and risk management. I didn’t even know there was such a degree when I enlisted in the Navy.
I joined with an open contract with a guarantee of West side, became a ABE3 before I separated, got my A&P after and now working on AWACS in Oklahoma...
@@Numskll If may ask Are you working at Tinker Air Force base in OK. Best wishes.

I signed as air traffic control at MEPS but I just got the word from my recruiter that AW is available. Super excited, it's always been what I wanted to do in the Navy. After I go to college I may try to become a pilot as well, we'll see in 10 years haha.
Hello I need advice
In my time Enlisted flew in the back two seats on the S-3 Viking.
When did the Viking fly two enlisted in the back seats? I was a SENSO from 84 to 04 and the crew always consisted of three officers and one AW.
I spend my 4 years in the USN in the aviation sector as an AZ2 and a crewmen .....I was in ASW sector. Great fun and would do it again.
Why didn’t you re enlist?
@@birddog7141 It used to be that 80% sailors didn't re-enlist, for many people they do their time and then go on with their lives. Many don't know what they want to do with the rest of their lives but know what they don't want to do. For some of those that are lifers their main motivation is security and stability.
I had never met an AZ though who was also on flight crew. AZs generally were strapped to a desk in Maintenance Control and took care of the paperwork that is associated with aircraft maintenance.
Nice 'overview', many is the detail though. AB's, they've got an 'association' - pride is a thing with them, gotta love em'. I can't do my thing without them doing theirs, embarked. Shore based - mehhh :o)
USN 8300, 30 and out. Nuff said.
My dad was launch and recovery on the Nimitz in the 80s. Lot of close call stories.

The key is to be assigned to a squadron and not ships company. Two very different worlds.
when i was at meps i was told the navy had limited jobs. so i tried to get in quick so i signed for abh :(. all i hear are negative things and i also heard its damn near impossible to change jobs. this is going to be a long 5 years lmao
Kiara R. ABH is a fun job bro, i’m in A school pensacola and i hear that ABH’s basically park the aircrafts and some of then do Crash and Salvaje
Kiara R. Me too I leave January 27th just be positive and make the best out of it I feel what you’re feeling, it’s rare ABH’s have these accidents, ABH is probably the bests out of the AB’s
Was a undesignated and was ABH for 2 years now stuck AM.. but I’ll tell you ABH is such a fun ass job man.. was a yellow shirt.. you get so much pride in it. Directing jets is so much fun but dangerous.. a plus was that we didn’t have to do GQ so that was a plus... you’ll learn about that once you get on a boat... it’s also pretty fun being a airman yellow shirt and everyone looking at you because yellow shirts are the hot shit on the flight deck. I would be telling chiefs to fuck off sometimes lol.. long work hours and won’t eat sometimes but you’ll be closer with your shipmates because of it...
Elijah G I’m leaving same date same rate

Why does the AT continue referring to Surface Ships as 'Boats'?!?
Submarines, River Craft, Small Boats, etcetera - are 'Boats'. All others are 'Ships'.
There are only 2 kinds of Ships in the Navy: (1.) Submarines, & (2.) Targets.

AT work at the squadron is SHOCKINGLY relaxed. AT (organizational) myself. We make fun of AT (intermediate) alot though.
AT2...Aimd seaopdet....hard to beat that type deployment..
Debating between AWF or a Seabee Rate. Currently going into Reserves and waiting on MEPS but those two rates are my dream jobs
AT is a relaxed rate if you're I-level. O-level ATs have a completely different experience. We're responsible for the bulk of troubleshooting on the flightline, constantly have to deal with incorporating/troubleshooting system/software upgrades, are responsible for COMSEC, have to do the AOs job when weapons aren't working properly, and usually have to advise maintenance Chiefs that have been off the jet for so long that they don't know the names of the current avionics systems. I've lost track of the number of times we ATs are still at work when every other shop has gone home. I can't wait to get as far away from this job as possible once my contract is up.
I’m in A school for ATI, i wish I had a choice with which job in Avionics I’d get but it is what it is lol.

Most of us would chose to go to land and have fun because we would only be at port for a couple of days then back at sea for months. I’m going in as an AG that’s the job I picked at Meps, glad they gave it to me :) xD I did a little research on it prior, weird that I never saw anyone mention it as being an aviation rate
Marina, all rates that start with an “A” are in the aviation field. The only rate that is abbreviated without an “A” is the PR rate, which was Parachute Rigger now called Aircrew Survival Equipmentman, but still referred to as PR.
Laura Zorza ohhh I Didn’t know that. That actually makes a lot of sense now that I think about it though. thank you for informing me of that!!
Just a side note , the use of the word "rank" for Navy enlisted personnel is incorrect. The term is "rate." The rating badge is a combination of rate (pay grade, as indicated by the chevrons) and rating (occupational specialty, as indicated by the symbol just above the chevrons). Carry On Shipmates.... :)

I’m an AWO Acoustic (Aircrew) and I love what I do. As an AWO, either acoustic or non-acoustic, it is more of a white-collar job in regards to having to constantly study our job and use our brain rather than getting our hands dirty (unless your an AWF or Rescue Swimmer). Us aircrewmen are the more sharper sailors of the navy (not to toot my own horn) so staying on top of your shit is a must. Being an “average sailor” won’t get you very far in the aircrew community and will get you dropped from the program.
AO all day
leaving naccs soon looking like either ending up with awo or awv
Going AM, leaving the 28th!!!
Kassidy I went in as a AMS in 98, still doing the same job after 8 years active. It’s easily the best aviation rate to take you somewhere as a civilian.

Ant 3451 you’ll get there! I spent my first three in the shack. I still direct aircraft every now and then. So it’s just another skill to use later.
Same AM, leaving the 26
Currently an AM in A-school! Good luck everyone!
Sorry to sound negative, but there's a reason why people end up as grapes. They have the lowest IQ's on the boat and probably the lowest ASVAB scores. Except for a little purification checking below deck they're just pumping gas all day long. To be a little fair, it's just as dangerous as any other job on the flight deck.
There are some pretty dumb cooks 😂
Nothing flies without the work that they do and in a battle situation the better and faster they are the quicker that the enemy gets what they deserve.
I was ABE... hated every millisecond of it. Lol
@Forgivefull what was it like ? What are your experiences with ABFs?
Undersigned Job is the best job in the Navy said: NOBODY.
AC is more operations to me than an AIR rate. but that’s coming from an ABE
The amount of times y’all say boat and not ship is bothersome.
Saying the word boat is very common in the air wing aviation ratings in the US Navy. We came from Naval Air Stations and only served on board when doing sea duty. In my day being haze grey and underway our focus in the squadron was working on the jets so, we didn't take the ride on the boat as our own.
what’s the difference between AD and AM/AME?
AD do more engine work like opening it apart and testing them they pretty much get their hands more on the engine. AM which I just signed for and ship out august 9th, they work on the hydraulics, control panels on the plane, pretty much the structure of the plane, the wings which are powered hydraulically landing gear. And AME I believe they just work on the safety on the plane like the seatbelts, eject seats. Mostly safety stuff
ADs worked on ( F-4 & F-14 ) Squadron level at least in my days of active duty were responsible for internal fuel systems and external fuel tanks, wasn't a big fan of working in JP4 and JP5 fuel. I Did enjoy swapping out engines that were high time though.
