I'm black and from compton I wasn't shit before I joined the navy I didn't even have a diploma serving in the navy changed my life for success
Love this 💖
Congrats Shipmate! I'm from South LA, and learned how to learn at OS "A" School. After I got out I went to Harvard, and earned my Bachelor's degree. The sky is the limit for you!!!
Wow you graduated from Harvard when you got out of the navy and your from south LA? Congratulations
@@kk54017 yes, and then went to Oxford in the UK for my MBA. The Navy holds a lot of weight with college Admissions
Since being discharged from the navy I worked on merchant Marine ships in the engine department i retired from that now im working on my 2nd retirement as a Westcoast longshoreman making 200k a year
Go in when your young. Its even nicer now. Let them feed and house you, don't get tempted to spend your own. Stack chips as much as you can and invest it.
Hello my fellow milwaukeean
That’s EXACTLY what I’m doing
Now THIS, is the best advice not even your own recruiter will hit u on
I’m going in at 21/22 depending on my weight lost journey
Totally AGREE!! Save your money…
Please continue to stay SHARP as in the tip of a SPEAR. I watch your videos from time to time and appreciate your positive attitude towards my and your and our NAVY!
yes!! I’ve been waiting for this video. I got OS but I don’t see a lot from people’s actual experience so thank youuu! loved the interviews to get other perspectives at the end as well. 🙌🏿
Your really helping make a decision if I want to go to the navy or college and right now it’s the navy

What do you have to score to become an os ?
It’s pretty cool to see how other branches of the military operate. Good stuff 🤙🏽
Boot camp in San Diego in 69,
Went to Radar "A" school at Treasure Island San Francisco then stayed there for EW "C" school
(Electronic Warfare). Went to Norfolk to the USS SEATTLE AOE-3
and got out in 73 as an OS-3. Made two MED deployments and saw a lot of the world. Still VERY PROUD
of my decision to join to this day.
Wear my NORFOLK NAVAL BASE ball cap EVERY DAY!!!
After I took the ASVAB, my recruiter said I "qualified" for OS. Knowing nothing about nothing, I went with it. Picked my orders after A school, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). Looking back, I liked it. Shouldn't have got out. So many good memories.
long as you have good memories!
Hey do you mind sharing what your asvab score was to pick OS?

How many weeks is the School for OS?
@@YiskaGudricht12 weeks at Great Lakes, IL
When I was in the Navy back in the late 1980's, I was an OS onboard an LPH , which was replaced by the LHD's. when we was underway and was on Port and Starboard watches, we had some personal off the watchbill to do cleaning and such. When we was in 3 section duties, the morning watches had become working section that afternoon and that afternoon watch had morning working section. We generally had watches from chow to chow, except that that eventually the 4 watches that was 5 hours and one 4 hour watch (22:00-0200).
In port, when I first reported onboard, our schedule was similar to how you destribe it. When my first LCPO got his Commission as a Warrent Officer, the new LCPO, who actually make Chief onboard got tired of other Chiefs decided to have us go on liberty at 14:30. When we got a new XO , the XO was worried about the Internal Survey that was coming up and we had to stay onboard until 16:30 we kept it until I got out of the Navy.
I was an OS in the Navy too, back in the early 90’s. I loved it!
We’re you on a ship?
@@markmcdonald8341 Yes, I was on two ships (USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 & USS Mars AFS-1).
@@jss6691 So I would have to be on a ship if I wanted to join? That’s the boot camp?
@@markmcdonald8341 Once you’re finished with boot camp. You’ll go straight to school (To whatever you signed up for), and once you finished completing that school. You’ll get orders to your first ship.
@@jss6691what jobs were available to you once you retired ?
22 years USN retired OS1, I was a qualified CICWO. I also was PIRAZ during the Iran crisis. I was LPO of a 40 man OI division. We always stood port and starboard watches, I did most my sea duty on tin can type ships, one cruiser and one amphib. I was in when you looked like sailors, talked like sailors, and went on liberty like sailors. I guess you could say I'm an old Salt and of course a Golden Shellback.
Just got my job today as a OS ship out November 2nd 💪🏽
Congratulations! I was an OS back in the early 1980’s! Loved it!
I just graduated 30 JUL 20

Omg I went to bootcamp July 8th 2019 as an OS! You’ll do amazing!❤️ can’t wait to see ya in the fleet!!!
This video was very insightful. Thank you for including others opinions, in every rank
I too was an OS back in the 80's aboard thee USS Yorktown CG-48. LOVED it! But we worked 6 on 6 off at sea, that was a little rough, but loved it. Brought back memories of sitting TIC and ID sup. Wow time flies. Great videos. BTW are they going to bring back the rating badges???
OS walking across the brow on liberty at 1000 can't beat that.
Thank you for this. Doing my research on rates at the moment and this helped a lot.
The Navy sure has changed since I was in. I started out on the deck force in 1965. A month later I was asked to join the guys in CIC. We were called Radarman back then. We stood 2 and 3 section watches (4 hours each). The only free time we had was from 1600 to 0700. When we weren't on watch we were cleaning. chipping paint and painting the spaces we were responsible for. We never could leave the ship early. Liberty Call was at 1600. Underway was the same. I never got to go to A school but did get to E5. We had SPS 10 surface search radar. SPS 37 air search radar. SPS 8 height finder radar and an ECM equipment setup. On watch we rotated every hour to a different station. We had a DRT and manuevering board to plot contacts and the log book of course. We were also the sound powered phone talker on the bridge as part of our rotation. It was a different time but the day I Turned 17 I was in Bootcamp.@ $66 a month and would do it again if they would take me. I served on the USS Duncan DDR 874 from 11/65 until 7/69. Homeport was San Diego. I did 3 trips to Viet Nam on her and got to witness Appollo 10 come back from going around the moon. .Good luck with your Navy career. Stay Safe.
I was a radar man not much to do in port flea spaces..so our chief started letting leave at 11:30. It was great I'd go to the base pool. Then someone put a stop to it we had to stay until 4 or 5.
This was a really awesome and informative video... being a Reservist who is an OS we don’t get much of the insight that you have shared you are a Gem Shipmate!
Very good video. I really like how you explained everything & having the interviews with different sailors was very fun & well done. They all had smiles & different prospectives and are dedicated. Tell them all that this US citizen thanks them for their service & the United States is safer each day because of their presence. My dad was in the Navy in WWII & my nephew just retired after close to 25 years from being with the Nuclear sub program & was a Mustang (enlisted to officer). I am officially “older then dirt”.

Thank you !!🤗
I RETIRED FORM THE NAVY 43 YEARS AGO AS AN OSC (AIR INTERCEPT CONTROLLER SUPVISOR). I DID 16 WESPAC CRUISES. I WAS AN INSTRUCTOR AT AIC SCHOOL (PT. LOMA) AND TOP GUN GRADUATE WITH OVER 5 THOUSAND INTERCEPTS. (WITH NO MIG KILLS). I’M EIGHTY YEARS OLD AND I HAVE NEVER REGRETED MY NAVEY CAREER OR LIFE.
THANKYOU💙😭😭 been waiting
I swore in yesterday and I’m in the process of switching to OS so hopefully I can get the job because it sounds nice!
I was a Marine Corps Mortarman and if I could do it all again I would have joined the Navy and pushed to be either a CT or OS. It pisses me off how back in 2011 we didn't have all this information on RUclips and Reddit so you could know everything there is to know about every job.
Edit: I could see that I'm not the only one who would do things differently with their enlistment. Maybe if I actually got to be an OS I would still want to do things differently. That girl who wants to be an accountant actually has a rating that translates well into accounting in my opinion, I know that since I'm a CPA. If you're still in touch with her you could send her my way and I'll guide her.
Way to break the rate down and get feedback from your division. I'm a retired OSC(SW), and my advice to all who are bored waiting is to find a good book and learn something during those times when you are slow. When you get out of the Navy, and you have good habits of doing something like learning (anything, even when you don't feel like it), it will help with any career, or skill you want or need. The perspective of boredom is a choice, and being useful in any scenario breaks you away from the lemmings, aka followers.
Went tad to a ship they needed admin support but i stayed kicking it with the OS’s definitely the best ppl on the ship💯 nothing but great people
I am OS1 but in the Reserve,(riverine/supply side of the house) I applied to Os or AT, but I am a bit unconfident since I lack many skills that are learned out to sea, specifically DDGs. And I don't get choose my next station lol, but a good thing is Os are used in everything in the Navy. Os is a good rate, received lots of respect from officers, and they trust your judgment if you have a decent one, even as a junior sailor. One last thing, this is a sea type work, so everyone will expect you to be out to sea, and that's what breaks most people!
This is such a great video! Definitely gives you that in house view of being in the navy
I was an OS on the USS Independence CV-62 early to mid 1980's. Long before you were even thought of. Back then we used the NTDS console. Went to "A" School and NTDS School at Damneck, VA Beach.
I used to do uniform inspections and whoever had the best uniform on a Friday got to go home immediately.
Oh and I really liked the Q & A you did with peers. Stay Up and Strong!
Oh I sleep so much better at night knowing that she is out there in operations!

As a former IT, when you saw OS's leave it was time to leave, but WE couldn't. Love to reminiscing but definitely don't miss the life.
OSCM (SW) retired in 1989 here. Thanks for the video. Some things never change.
I am extremely new to the Navy as an OS. I'm nervous as I'm learning being a surface tracker especially being around the officers they look at me like I'm stupid
Fr 😭
Homie move with this video.
Very glad to have all this before going to it🤙
We never got that much time off during the week when stateside, unless we were in the yards. The XO would inspect the berthing compartments and heads around 1500 every day so those cleaning crews had to stick around for that. Plus we had exterior spaces assigned to OI Division so there as always some chipping and painting that needed to be done on those. I was lucky enough to be POIC for CIC so all we had to do was a quick sweep and swab each morning and some light dusting. This was '75-'80 on a tin can so take that for what it's worth. We had NTDS Mod. 4 and there were video game programs we could load on the computers and play them on the consoles. They were much more advanced than the ones in the arcade and the duty section would stay up all night playing them sometimes.
Thanks for this video👍🏾 quick question how does this job help transfer over to the civilian world?
Isaiah McCray great question! Wish she’d answer tho
If you become knowledgeable in combat system, Tech Rep.
Air Traffic Control.

@Imani Anjelina I was on 2 carriers as an OS and yes I love what I did. Being on DDG or CG I wouldn't have a clue how they operate. I will tell how bad we OSs are in both Top Gun movies those are supposed to be OSs (AIC) talking to Maverick but due to the classification of our equipment they use the Air Controllers module. My 2nd duty station I went to a Mine Warfare Squadron as a controller and you do have OSs in fighter Squadron as AICs.

If you’re thinking of being an OS in the Navy just join the Coast Guard 👀. This isn’t a rag on the navy just tryna help someone out. There’s a 50k bonus to go OS in the CG. You’ll make E5 super fast, same schedule underway/job that she’s speaking of. You’ll do all she said plus more. You can work outside the shop as well. There’s OSs who are helicopter tie down members, boarding team member, and more. You can get all the same quals. I’ve gone to the Navy ADC course, SLQ 32 operations course, Surface EW journeyman course, EW threat rec, AN/SSX, plus more. And at every school i go to with the navy. Let me tell you they all say the same thing “dang I wish I woulda known about the CG before I joined” just saying 🤷🏽♂️. Again this isn’t a diss on the Navy she seems extremely happy with her job and I’m sure tons are. Just know there are options to this same job outside the Navy.

Appreciate this comment ! Because you just taught me something new! Thank you !!
Fuck that , it requires a longer contract than 5 years that the navy gives . Not worth the 50k

Very nice job young lady. I was an OSCS retired as a CWO and I can say seems like things are still the same since my days of MoBoards and controlling but nice work again!
hey i want to be a CWO down the line, any tips on how to get it ?
@ Good morning shipmate, I submitted a package for the program as a chief which you’ll already need to be or you can submit a package for LDO if not a chief. The details of what I did is a bit hazy I’m sorry but once the package is submitted just wait for the message to come out for those selected. Shoot for LDO as soon as you are eligible I did but wasn’t selected unfortunately but was very happy as a WO. Good luck and keep pushing yourself on the “fast track”
