OS type, I guess they don't have Mine Warfare Helo Controllers anymore. My second sea duty command was with HM-14 squadron as a controller of CH-53 Sea Stallions.
Greetings! I've qualified for; IT, OS, AV and other ratings but I'm interested in the ones that I wrote. On 19 of December 2023 I'm going to swore and I'm still struggling in which rating to choose. I've seen your video twice and it is the more informative that I could find on IT and thanks for that. I've seen a lot of videos on these different ratings and I'm still looking for more information. If you could tell me which would be better in the terms of the working environment (excluding the IT because you've already explained it).
Hey no problem! Not sure about AV honestly since I've never worked with them before. Work environment? IT's will work in their own space with maybe two other jobs. While OS's we have alot of rates in combat. Due to a lot of warfare areas and expertise on any given day for an OS, you can be working with roughly 7 rates on a single watch. But in port if you have a good division, the work environment is good due to people wanting to do a good job so they can go home. Hope I answered your question!
This video is very informative, I just joined navy not long ago and I’m in the OS rating field and coming from an army background I’m feel like there more stuff I would definitely like to know cause I definitely want to know more of the Schools and also becoming chief.

Others may play but when Os’s are off watch, their in the rack.

one way to get better and improve on math is to get the asvab book or get the asvab app, there are alot of questions on there which can help improve your math. For Intel, I know you have to have a higher score, I'll find out what skills are needed
Currently choosing between YN & OS. I wish I knew more about deployments and which ships deploys the most bc I’ll be a mom bringing in kids . Their dads are staying home. So if you have any advice on that please let me know!
when it comes to deployments OS would deploy the most due to our mission. YN's on the other hand being admin there are orders that some get to where they're not really on ships. I know a couple of YN's who only been on 1-2 ships their whole career and have only done either shore or "flag" commands. When it comes to deployments each ship mission is different. I can't give a solid answer on that sadly, but roughly I'd say every year and a half?
Great question! honestly, it depends on the platform that you're on and the mission. I was on a cruiser for 5 years and we deployed twice. because for most deployments we have phase to fix the ship, parts, etc. I would say about 1 every other year or 2 years depending on the platform and their mission.. Hope this helped!

I’m trying to convert to OS from engineer been in 3 years but kinda feel nervous on being the new guy that’s a petty officer 2nd class that doesn’t know anything about OS yet. But the OS’s on my ships are cool and taught me a bit what asvab score is required for OS?
I had a 43 whenever I chose OS before joining the Navy , so I'm sure anything within that range and higher. No need to worry about going in as a new Second Class, we're all willing to help out. I've come across a couple folks that were in your shoes also and they were taken care of
When I was in in the early 90’s the ASVAB score didn’t matter that much. It really depended on the command. While I was in we actually had two guys cross rate from engineering rates to OS because of our Captain’s recommendation! Keep your head up! Hopefully it still works that way!
I’m currently about to go to meps to get processed to get into the navy and I’m interested in the OS position if available. Any clue on what asvab score you need?
Thank you for all the great information you have provided, You have been a great help. I am an Airman Undez currently but will strike OS this year OCT. I do want to go to school for Cyber Security and of course do Cyber Security in the civilian world. As an OS, what are good Quals that will help transfer to civilian with the degree of Cyber Security? Also, as an OS beginner. What Quals are in high demand to get?
my pleasure and welcome to the OS family!! 1. I would look at things such as Navy COOL and even certain programs around the area your at that could give classes for cyber certificates. or even try udemy.com 2. you'll always start off with the basic quals which is what I started off with first, once you master those then you can move up to the next qual. that's what I did. You always want to learn your job to the point where you can teach others also. Hope that helped!
Thank you for all of your information. I've been thinking about joining for a while now. Do you recommend joining the Navy in this point in time with recent occurring wars? I also have a medical background and OS has been interesting to me. What would you recommend as far as that scenario ?
great question! How I look at it there was never a "peaceful" time when it comes to joining the military. me being in from 2010 there's been alot of things happen but I was never on enemy lines if you get what I'm saying. I'd say go for it, especially depending on your reason, whether it be for school benefits, etc. If you have anything else feel free to ask!
We do in some cases but that ls about every other month depending on the duty section that you're in. There are times when you don't work 5 weekends at all while other times you work those two
congratulations! Those are both good jobs but as I mentioned one does have an advantage over the other when it comes to worldwide assignment, so it's really up to you on what do you think is best and which one you feel will motivate you more.

One thing about our rate, it’s made to be underway. If you don’t wanna go to sea, don’t be a RD (OS now). Another thing, in my “off time” I slept. Others may play but when Os’s are off watch, their in the rack.
Thanks for sharing that with me! If I'm not mistaken, RD changed to OS in the mid 80's.
Also, I was also a sleeper but once we got into three section watches, I was able to do more things which myself and the division loves
Could this rate lead to becoming a warrant officer?
yes it can! you'd have to make chief to apply to be a warrant and have a certain amount of years in. More info is in the opnavinst 1420.1B
Very helpful video
Appreciate it and thanks for watching! which part did you like the most
I need help, guys. I'm going to meps on Friday is ABH, ABE BM good rate?
BM is good they do a bit of everything on the ship, there's a page called 911babygoat I believe who is a ABH he talks about his job. Not familiar with ABE sorry
Thanks for replying

How hard is the school?

So I’m not very great at like math but some of the intelligence jobs interest me what kind of skills are needed?
one way to get better and improve on math is to get the asvab book or get the asvab app, there are alot of questions on there which can help improve your math.
OS2 Reyes here. USS Patterson (FF-1061) 1987-1991
Pleasure to have you here OS2!!
Hey, I wanna know how often are the deployments
Great question! honestly, it depends on the platform that you're on and the mission. I was on a cruiser for 5 years and we deployed twice. because for most deployments we have phase to fix the ship, parts, etc. I would say about 1 every other year or 2 years depending on the platform and their mission.. Hope this helped!

Can you link the video where you explain how you got MAP’d?
Hey there! I posted my latest MAP Video for the year down in the description. I've never explained my MAP Story, ill definitely do a video on this! Thanks
how long does it normally take to hit os3 from ossr
Roughly 24 months . And that's talking day 1 of when you start bootcamp
I know I was able to get it with a 43, I'll reach out to someone and find out for you!
1. I would look at things such as Navy COOL and even certain programs around the area your at that could give classes for cyber certificates. or even try udemy.com
2. you'll always start off with the basic quals which is what I started off with first, once you master those then you can move up to the next qual. that's what I did.
Can I do OS as a Reserve ?
The OS rating has nothing to do with medical. It is one path or the other. But medical training is always good to have with anything you do.
Do you guys work weekends?
We do in some cases but that ls about every other month depending on the duty section that you're in. There are times when you don't work 5 weekends at all while other times you work those two
Are you still in today?
No, I separated a couple years ago
I’m thinking about doing OS in coast guard if anyone can give me some insight please 🙏🏻?
does the nav still do shellback?
They still do! I did my ceremony back in 2016. It doesn't get talked about as much though

thank you for your comment! Mr and mo boards have a love /hate relationship at times. Were you there when the fire happened?

I scored 42 on my asvab but with the way the individual scores are set up I qualify for OS so I’m trying to decide between that or PS 🥲
congratulations! Those are both good jobs but as I mentioned one does have an advantage over the other when it comes to worldwide assignment, so it's really up to you on what do you think is best and which one you feel will motivate you more.
OS no regrets. Plenty of fast action drills.
