    CTR has changed a bit since the 1970’s. The basic school was 9 months long. If selected for a “C” school, well, that was another three months or so. We were in continual training, so schools usually happened between duty statins. Also, we collected and analyzed and many more choices for assignments. I spent most of my career overseas. Since the end of the Cold War, many duty stations have closed. We worked the dreaded 2-2-2-80 shift; don’t know if new schedules is better-I suspect it is. Two days, two mid, two eves with 80 hours off. The day-mid and mid-eve were double backs. Also, women were not allowed on combatant ships until the late 80’s, 1990’s, so women CT’s were not deployed to ships, aircraft, or submarines.

    An important part of getting a TS clearance is be honest, be absolutely honest with the person who is investigating your background. Part of thing they’re looking for is information that can be used and leveraged against you. And if you’re honest about some maybe not great thing on your past or bad debt, then that information is unlikely to be able to be used against you for blackmail to get information.

  • @clydewilson1141

    Interesting video. Thanks to both of you. I was a CTO from 73-95. I made rate every time I was eligible and I made Chief the first time up in 82 and was selected for Warrant in 87. Retired as a W4 in 95. My dad was a CTOCS who make LDO and retired as a LCDR after 26 years. My mother was also a CT in 50-52, and my wife was a CTT2 in 73-77. You will have lots of job opportunities when you get out. I would recommend staying in the Reserves if you leave active duty so in the long run you can get that retirement and Tricare medial. My wife was in the second group of females that were allowed to come in to the CT rating in the early 70s. My first duty station we did 12-12-96 (2 12 hour day watched 0700-1900, then 24 hours off, then 2 12 mins 1900-0700 - then 96 hours off. When I was at sea we would usually work 12 port & starboard, but as the CTO2 LPO I would 18-20 hour days while running the detachment and training the new Ens who had brand new to the CT field and had zero experience. As a CTO2/CTO1/CTOC and CWO I got two brief lots of Admirals and senior government executives. Two female CTOs that worked for me were two of the first female CTOs to go to sea on COM6FLT in 81. Non-rated/non-designated is NOT the way to go - good advice.

    Another awesome video Shae!! I will say, my friend is at boot camp right now and he went in undesignated, because he couldn’t get clearance for the rate he wanted. He knows he’ll be doing grunt work for awhile, but for him it was either that with the hope of earning the clearance in 2-3 years, or choosing a rate that he knew he didn’t want and would wind up hating. And I’ve watched other navy RUclips channels of those who went in undes, and they had overall good experiences, so I would say it’s a matter of personal preference for each person. 👍 but I’m really enjoying these vids with people who have different rates, thank you for making them!!

    I was an AD-2 assigned to FLSW Washington DC on Andrews AFB, MD from 10/81 - 7/84. I lived in Building Four commonly known as Nimitz Hall which consisted of three floors::
    On the third floor lived CTs that worked on Cheatham Annex.and they avoided us. My shipmates and I lived on the second floor.
    One late evening, a more personable CT sat down in the 2nd floor TV lounge with me. He told me that CTs are required to sign an agreement that their lives are forfeited in case of extreme duress when a vessel is about to be captured. I could tell that he hated his job.

I was in Pensacola for 9+ months and most of that was schooling and it was extremely taxing. You need to be honest about drug use and any alcohol abuse in the past that you’ve legally gotten in trouble for. Definitely need to be honest about the debt that you’re in. @sheekm227 3 года назад +3

    I've got so many questions! If you don't mind me asking, what exactly are the requirements for IS? I'm mean from ASVAB to meeting qualifications at MEPS? I'm eyeballing this rate with a couple more on the rim. I was told about the Seabees because of my fighting experience and spirit, but I'd rather use my brain to hopefully work my way up to through the Intel Community. If I could get into either EOD or IS I'd be better off, but I just learned that EOD has an age cap, so I guess that's off the table (turning 34 this year). But again, I've extensive training in fighting and varied small arm weaponry including explosives, from a past life of course... It's just that I'm looking for a change of scenery so to speak, and I don't want to pick a rate that I felt as though was picked for me only to later on feel a sense of monotony, or holding back potential. Is your rate competitive? How exactly do they dictate their selection process?

    • @ShaeTaylorLife
      @ShaeTaylorLife  3 года назад +1

      So glad you reached out! I enjoyed my time being An IS. Really, what it comes down to is what your goals are currently and in the future. I was looking more in the future, so I wanted to pick some thing that would give me a TS clearance. You can Google the ASVAB requirements and see what you need to score in order to qualify. You have to have decent vision, and have a clean criminal record and history because you have to fill out a form where they dig into all of your history and passed and make sure that you have the integrity to have a clearance and access to that information. If you’re looking into more action, I would look into rescue swimmer, SWCC, EOD, aircrew. I wouldn’t say any of the Intel rates are always dynamic. With any job, there is monotony. You can work with seals on special orders as an IS or CTR, However, that is a very small community. It really just comes down to what is available, what your end goal is, and if you want to have a desk job or you want to be more in the action.

    • @sheekm227
      @sheekm227 3 года назад +1

      @@ShaeTaylorLife I see, from what I understand all the fast action jobs want '30 and below' year old's so that pretty much rules me out. But yeah, my scores for CTR and IS flood the initial requirements on my ASVAB, So I figure a support role if anything will suffice. Otherwise I won't mind keeping more fitting options on the table, despite SIGINT or HUMINT being my top choices, regardless, I'm a fast mover. As for my criminal record, I have none. On one hand I'm a proud law abiding citizen, on the other I don't even have as much as a speeding ticket. I dunno, desk or loud noises, it makes no difference. I don't know much about the Navy but I can talk ears off about fighter jets and Outer Space as if I were doctored. Either that or maybe it's just the common feeling of entering an unfamiliar environment. I still tend to count the number of inhabitants when entering a room out of instinct, you know. In any case, thanks for the advice Shae. I'll keep this in mind the next time I'm at MEPS.
