With reference to the shapes of creatures such as kingfishers and platypuses, we pursued the optimal shape for high-speed running, and that is the result.
The big advantage of the Shinkansen is its dedicated track. The trains can break directly from top-speed into the station. Meanwhile in Europe, most high-speed rail infrastructure is in between cities, but not within the cities itself. So once your TGV, AVE or ICE reaches Paris, Madrid or Berlin outskirts, the trains have to use old, shared infrastructure with 80-160 km/h top speed.
I so much appreciate your respecting our culture (not speaking on train and censoring walking people) as I expected to see something uncomfortable I feel often by watching foreign tourists videos. It is simply because there is no Kyoto airport and Osaka Airport is bad at accessing even to Osaka, while Shinkansen stops at the center of Kyoto, so very predictable. I believe you can challenge this next time from Tokyo to Hiroshima, which is just 4 hours access by both transportations.

Why did Madison go to Tokyo? All Tokaido Shinkansen trains stop at Shinagawa which is much closer to Shibuya and quicker to get to, and since the Nozomi trains run roughly every 10 mins, she probably could've got an earlier train. It also looks like she got a Hikari, not the faster Nozomi, as the sign was red when she got on, Nozomi is yellow. Also it is acceptable to use the phone in the vestibules (bit at the ends of the carriage where the doors are), and why does she call it the "Nozomi line", Nozomi are the fastest trains (which she didn't even use), along the Tokaido Shinkansen line, there are also Hikari and Kodama which are slower.
Nicky never had a chance, especially going to Kyoto via Itami Airport. Going somewhere farther from the Shinkansen line could make for a more fair race.
This race should have never been close madison could've taken the Shinkansen from Shinagawa too... if they did the same race from Tokyo to Osaka it might have been close.
Don't forget the ekiben(lunch box) you can buy at the station and the ice cream sold inside the train. My recommended ekiben is the chicken bento. Contains ketchup rice and fried chicken. It is said that His Majesty the Emperor also loved it.
Without watching to the end I'd say Shinkansen Nozomi super express would get you there quicker and easier and with nicer food with those awesome bento boxes they serve onboard! :) Flying is boring and more expensive in comparison lol
If I suddenly have to go to Kyoto without prior planning, always Shinkansen. If I could plan 1-2months in advance then plane is cheaper even from fullservice airline.
Japan one of the best countries in the world be kind and helpful and give help our family were going to Japan for a holiday then my family was sick so we canceled at least we are going in September
the shinkansen isn't actually that fast the tgv's in france and many other trains in europe that go nearly as fast/ as fast as the shinkansen it's just that the shinkansen came first and has higher ridership numbers
As a person who's witnessed Nicky scranning KFC on Tottenham Court Road, I know for certain that he pre ordered that spaghetti bolognese without shame.
agree, and what happened to Daniel Ross (Dan), he was on UK naked dating show Naked Attraction years ago (clips still on YT), he was/is a writer and did loads of travels with the other presenters, shame he seems to have left.
This is true, but if you're travelling unreserved and the train is packed it's easier to get a seat if you start at Tokyo Station, since the train starts from there.
If you ask a Japanese person which means of transportation to go from Shibuya to Kyoto, I think that more than 90% of the time they will choose the Shinkansen. This is because there are few transfers and you can reach Kyoto Station on time.
I'm surprised it's still cash only so much in Tokyo. Would have thought smartphones would have been prevalent there. I always got confused between needing two different company metro/train cards.
Why would you need two different card? Suica works for everything except the Shinkansen. And you can even use Suica to pay for most vending machines and corner stores. It's mostly kiosks, bars and old school restaurants that require cash these days. Well, and the temples and stuff of course.
It's discouraged, especially talking on phone is considered very rude. Talking quietly isn't that big of a deal on a Shinkansen, though, but on local trains you should be silent if possible.
@@neggroplease It's just a cultural thing, it won't get you in trouble with the police or anything unless you go out of your way to harass other passengers, but it's just considered rude behaviour.
It's quicker to take Shinkansen from Shinagawa than from Tokyo station if you are in Shibuya.

@4:26 confirmed that the train is Hikari.
For the next race, you should do Seoul to Busan
“Can Nicky ever not win one of these races?” 😂
hahahah!!
@@nickyjkelvinplease do more videos
Nicky never had a chance, especially going to Kyoto via Itami Airport. Going somewhere farther from the Shinkansen line could make for a more fair race.
This race should have never been close madison could've taken the Shinkansen from Shinagawa too... if they did the same race from Tokyo to Osaka it might have been close.
I'd much prefer the train. Japan looks so beautiful and you miss all that in the air
Excited to take this route on the Hikari next week!
Don't forget the ekiben(lunch box) you can buy at the station and the ice cream sold inside the train.
My recommended ekiben is the chicken bento. Contains ketchup rice and fried chicken. It is said that His Majesty the Emperor also loved it.
You should do a race from Singapore to Malaysia by coach vs plane
Yes
Have an amazing day to you both. Cheers.
KUDOS TO YOU .. AWESOME COST EFFECTIVE IDEAS YOU MADE IT
Madison is so lovely! 🥰
Are you sure you can use the foot rest with your shoes on in the train? 😅 I've seen some Japanese vloggers mentioning no shoe on foot rest?!
I also watch Japanese vloggers and that was my first thought, too. They tend to remove their shoes.
I always take the train instead 😂 easy to get..comfy and lay back - little to no stress
Where is Liam?! 😢
and Dan (Daniel Ross) and Nickys bf @sammsalter who he has had on twice I think but never stated their connection (sad not to be honest)
Congrats Madison 👏👏👏
Without watching to the end I'd say Shinkansen Nozomi super express would get you there quicker and easier and with nicer food with those awesome bento boxes they serve onboard! :) Flying is boring and more expensive in comparison lol
I recognise all the stations because of Jet Lag xD
If I suddenly have to go to Kyoto without prior planning, always Shinkansen. If I could plan 1-2months in advance then plane is cheaper even from fullservice airline.
A coffee place must go at Kyoto is the original arabica
The meal in the 45 mins flight
Is better than my meal from hk to uk by BA
Why did she got to Tokyo Station? Shibuya to Shinagawa is by far quicker.
I feel like the taxis killed off the transparency/legitimacy of the challenge.
Always cool
Japan one of the best countries in the world be kind and helpful and give help our family were going to Japan for a holiday then my family was sick so we canceled at least we are going in September
the shinkansen isn't actually that fast the tgv's in france and many other trains in europe that go nearly as fast/ as fast as the shinkansen it's just that the shinkansen came first and has higher ridership numbers
Madison finally dethroned you 😊
Nicky, the delay didn’t count as your plane arrived on time.
As a person who's witnessed Nicky scranning KFC on Tottenham Court Road, I know for certain that he pre ordered that spaghetti bolognese without shame.
haha!
Do Athens to Mykonos Ferry vs Airplane!
5:58 Welcome to Madison’s ShinkansenASMR.
🤣
Where is the carbon cost as well?
what I need this.
Please do more videos with Liam
agree, and what happened to Daniel Ross (Dan), he was on UK naked dating show Naked Attraction years ago (clips still on YT), he was/is a writer and did loads of travels with the other presenters, shame he seems to have left.
But you could have gone to Shinagawa station to take the shinkansen which will save some time.
This is true, but if you're travelling unreserved and the train is packed it's easier to get a seat if you start at Tokyo Station, since the train starts from there.
For awhile Nicky did lose to Liam. And Nicky was taking the plane ✈️ and Liam the train 🚆 from one of the UK 🇬🇧 races
wow
Surely you can't turn up at an airport 30 mins before a domestic flight and still make it...
Thoughts in the shower:
Kyoto is a scrambled version of Tokyo
Actually funny enough the full name of Tokyo (東京都) literally translates to East Kyoto
I heard it's east city but I guess it's similar
@@Dash_on_the_drums Kyoto means capital city
Tokyo was originally Edo but when the Emperor moved there it was renamed the Eastern Capital.
Great video, love seeing the price comparison. Unlike TPG cast, most of us do need to buy our own tickets (or at least justify the cost to finance!)
i just calculated the whole race with google maps, in 1min :(
Just get a JRPass, it’s really worth it than just getting one Shinkansen ticket :)
No you wont beat her if its in time theres actually a better route she could take that will make it a tad bit quicker.
Im sorry, Its really hard to ignore that both hosts are obviously way out of their wheelhouse here.
東京から京都に飛行機で行く日本人見たことも聞いたこともない笑
Hun don't put yourself in that category, it's called a Plus size heart
shes not gonna shag you mate
You should say hello and thankyou in Japanese, as with any other country you're visiting. It's just polite and respectful
Is it really not allowed to talk on the trains in Japan?? 👀👀
It's discouraged, especially talking on phone is considered very rude. Talking quietly isn't that big of a deal on a Shinkansen, though, but on local trains you should be silent if possible.
@@Lightice1 oh wow! Do people get fined if they do or is it a cultural thing?
@@neggroplease It's just a cultural thing, it won't get you in trouble with the police or anything unless you go out of your way to harass other passengers, but it's just considered rude behaviour.
@@Lightice1 Oh ok. Thanks for your reply!
