NEW YORK to DC - Race to The White House | Plane (American Airlines) vs Train (Amtrak Acela)

- Опубликовано: 12 апр 2023
- TPG’s Marc Ramos and Madison Blancaflor race from the Empire State Building to the White House in the capital of the United States. The catch: it’s rush hour on a Wednesday morning.
Marc hops on a flight with American Airlines from LaGuardia International to Raegan National while Madison opts for a trip on Amtrak’s high-speed Acela train from Moynihan Train Hall to Washington Union Station.
Between security lines, passenger lounges, taxis and more, Marc & Madison highlight the advantages and setbacks to each mode of transportation for your frequent commuters!

The Points Guy UK is doing shows in the USA... what is the original The Points Guy doing? 😂😂😂
I’m pretty sure that a rival insinuated drug use
They have significantly more subscribers, I think that's why
I appreciate Marc's increasing anxiety over how to properly relax at LGA (p.s: I really like Marc and Madison!)
4:12 Moynihan lounge is genuinely amazing. It’s so comfy, they have luggage lockers, lots of free food that’s genuinely very tasty even being mostly pre-packaged. Plus they let you take a bunch of snacks for the ride! I always fill my bag with snacks for my trips to Buffalo from Moynihan. Saves me money and lets me have a comfy seat to rest in!
Definitely worth the 1500 Amtrak points!
What are your costs? Nikki always gives you a cost breakdown on these videos...
We need Nicky and Liam back ASAP
This really should have been a video for the TPG channel not TPGUK.
Give them a chance this is the first time they have took over this channel from Nicky and Liam for one video
@@abakedslayermcgiles2703 I agree with you
@@dylanhendley8239 yes, however this is a separate the points guy UK channel, and i and others believe this should be posted on tpg
@@sophiapeaks4 It was probably posted here bc it was a challenge done in the same way the UK channel always does travel challenges.
I know it’s a race but COST is a factor too. On the UK races it breaks down what each leg costs. The plane won by 40 mins but if it cost $150 extra then that would impact on my decision. A tourist would probably prefer to go via rail as you get enjoy looking out of the window
This isn’t the same. It’s not TPG UK without Nicky and Liam
I actually prefer this, no fake drama or over exaggerated stress for show.
It is the same. No rules over taxi use communicated in advance and just doing what they like in terms of ground transport...
Wait didn’t he say it was a 45 minute drive to LGA and that he got in to the cab at 9:17am How has a 45 minute journey turned in to a 16 minute journey if he got to the airport at 9:33am?
45 minutes is probably the average time including traffic
@@fprosk Exactly. 45 minutes is the average time to get to LaGuardia. The fact he got there in less time is unprecedented.
Wrong channel?
Wheres Nicky and Liam?!!!
You guys seem to have uploaded on the wrong channel
@4:42 i CANNOT WAIT FOR THE AVILA LIVERTY the ride quality when she is shooting that is halarious! considering its our "flagship train"!
No Nicky and Liam = No party.
100%right
9:40 not to mention trains are legally required to be ADA complement! So they’re often the only accessible mode of tasks for disabled people! I know multiple people who would rather take Amtrak from Buffalo to DC over a flight purely because they don’t trust any airline to treat them and their wheelchair with dignity, and driving is just completely inaccessible for a ton of psychical disabilities!
Love to see another awesome plane vs train race video!
Check out the English guys', London to Paris Train v Plane video, on the same channel.
I’ve seen other people do this, and it’s usually pretty much a wash. I’m a rail fan to begin with, so I root for the train usually. It usually wins because it’s city center to city center if that’s where you’re trying to get to, and no security. But this video shows a different perspective. The airport route got him thru security and to the gate pretty quickly, then they were able to shave off a lot of time in the air. Quick and small lines aren’t things you usually associate with NYC area airports.
No one can shave a lot of time on a flight. He got lucky and had non of the usual problems a flight can have so he took off and landed with no delays. The flight time airline publish is not the actual time as they pad it to avoid late arrival.
@@AL5520 right. The posted flight times are padded, and you can shave some time in the air. How much on such a short flight to begin with? I dunno. But yea, he was flying at a lucky time breezed thru the normal airport bureaucracy and mumbo jumbo. Very interesting video in how flying really won out on this route. I don’t think I’ve seen it before. Usually it’s only within 15-20 minutes of each other, pretty negligible difference.
I love rail too! I was rooting for rail (said in a Tyra Banks yell). I thgt he was joking when he said he was waiting for 45 minutes. I was shocked air travel was so quick. Rail should've won bc it's already located in the city center. I take the McPherson Metro route all the time going to Reagan. It takes less than 20 mins and you are @ the airport. East coast living just gives you so many more options of cost effective travel that no where else in the U.S. can beat.
We need a Plane vs Train vs The Jet (bus) when the new Amtrak Acela trains are put into service
A price comparison would have been interesting!
Love that you extend you British channel to the US though!
Wow, La Guardia has certainly had a glow up - looks like an international terminal
the new Terminal B is beautiful
Great video loved their very chill energy. I would add to any UK viewers looking at this as advice: Amtrak (non acela) is notoriously late. I've had a train be 3 hours late before, but usually when you ride amtrak it's about the experience (like going from Chicago to LA) vs getting to a place on time. Everyone is really friendly you always have a ton of room. :) but loved their energy. More please.
To add to this, this is for their long distance trains only. Along the northeast corridor, trains are on time the majority of the time and delays are usually small. The hour-long delays are common on the long distance routes because the trains share tracks with freight trains and therefore need to yield to those freight trains, which can cause hours of waiting.
Amtrak charges high service prices, but only occasionally delivers high service...they're a government-subsidized monopoly that doesn't seem to care about passengers.
@@alcohen633 nonsense. Air and road travel are ALSO subsidized... tthe issue with high prices is because there are less and less serviceable cars, because the management dont care.
Thank you
An exceptional flight, this time.
Love this! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!
Is that the recently completed new terminal at La Guardia? Looked really great for a US airport! Overall, I'm happy to see such an improvement over there.
Interesting video as well, not the same as the original, but nothing to complain about. However you forgot to mention how much was spent by eaach one, including food&beverages...
The cab ride cost vs taking MTA is not worth saving 20 minutes, but still a fun video. Love the new LGA terminal.
MTA to La Guardia is not nice though. Q70 bus, or the Select Bus from Harlem 125 th Street - the only airport in NYC which will never get a decent transit connection - it was all cancelled last week.
Great Video, but being as the travel times are similar, in normal circumstances, the deciding factor is price, which you didn't mention.
I travel this route at least quarterly. Train Business class is usually about $200. Flying is usually about $200. I usually fly.
@@reillywilloughby I am shocked by how much the prices have dropped to take Acela! $200 is what I spent to go from Union Station to Baltimore.
Please do more uk videos
AND you guys clearly traveled off peak. Was that jet supersonic?
You uploaded this on the wrong channel or something? This is the TPGUK channel so it's a bit odd for 2 American presenters to be racing between 2 American cities without any hint of relevance for a UK centric audience which I thought was the intention of a UK channel
This legit should have been a video for the TPG channel not TPGUK.
Have a good time
What a great video guys love the two people who are doing it, but how come you missed out the pricing
Aww, I was wanting at least one of you to take the subway but you didn't (sad oboe)
Although I am curious if taxis weren't allowed and you were only allowed to travel either on foot or public transport what the outcome would be
If you want a funny mess of plane and trains that would be my trip to the UK back in February. The trip out was basically, RTD A-Line to DEN>BA A350 across the pond>Heathrow Express to Paddington (try not to get lost in Heathrow haha)>tube over to Euston>Avanti West Coast to Crewe> TfW from Crewe to Shrewsbury. That was quite a travel day haha.
Prices of the total tickets, cabs, etc. would be nice to see.
With a real high speed line and a direct train it will take less than 2h, something that won't happen in the foreseen future but with the planned improvements on the existing line it should be faster in a few years.
Amtrak’s Goal is to reduce the Run time between New York to DC to about 2 hours 20mins. With future improvements to the corridor and a speed bump … it’s doable.
Wish got more footage of the Amtrak lounge
as a person who has lived in NYC for a few years finally my curiosity is solved as I was confused what amtrak was since I always take e to world trade center
Huh? What? You had no idea what Amtrak was? Is that what you just posted?
@@CC-si3cr Well, I knew what Amtrak was but not in-depth as I don't need to take the train to go to my point of destination
@@CC-si3cr Also, I was not born in NYC nor in America I was born in south Asian country
Anyone know the price?
I'm doing a persuasive outline and PowerPoint on exactly this for my public speaking class about train travel. Let's think about much transportation the guy had take to get to the airport, delays and how I took him to the outskirts of the city. A train is much more efficient because a train takes you to the train station that is downtown of the city then means of transportation to the destination. In my opinion trains are more efficient because of the features on board and brings you right into the city without any hassle at the airport. On and off on a train. Such a big hassle with boarding a plane. Who agrees with me?
You should do New York to Boston
I do the same and take the train to NYC from Washington!
Is the channel completely done with UK content? No Nicky or Liam and a video that is completely irrelevant for a UK audience. There's no point having a separate UK channel if it's content you'd find on the US channel. Shame since I've watched since the very first video four years ago.
Couldn’t have said it better myself 👍
Please do more uk videos
they should merge the two atp, this uk channel is far better than their main channel
Cry.
:(
This isn't Points Guy UK??!
Where was the price breakdown?
12:11 Why did she pass the Tidal Basin on her way from Union Station to the White House? Either that was stock photography or the driver really messed up.
I was thinking the same thing...me thinks the uber driver padded the ride to increase the fare.
Where. Is. Nicky. And. Liam.
Flight from NY to DC is the worst idea ever hahaha
Dulles or Reagan it depends.
When seeing Reagan 5 years ago. Stuffed like a turkey. Dulles is in maryland...
@@skylineXpert The convenience of the train wins for me… so much smoother than rushing to go to the airport, high chances of flight delays etc…
Talking about Dulles, with the new subway station at Dulles you can go to Metro Center station pretty easy! It was a great experience for me in February ☺️
Depends, I’m usually on-time to places so I don’t mind flying
@@skylineXpert Dulles is in Virginia.
Now do it on a day the northeast goes into major ATC delay programs, ie thunderstorm season! :)
Hi.very good
Next race from Miami to Orlando pitting flying against The Brightline.
Got lucky on that flight, especially taking the slowest possible airport to get to in NYC. You could've shaved more time off by flying out of Newark, just mosey over to Penn, hop on NJT, you're at EWR in 20min, normally EWR is the easiest and fastest airport to get to from Manhattan. One traffic jam or long security line would've easily put this race into the trains favor.
Are you going to create a separate US channel?
This is okay, they seem nice, but more TPG standard than TPGUK 🤔 Maybe it meant for elsewhere and repurposed. Look forward to getting the guys back on
What about the price?!!
TPG UK ???
GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!
GO!
Should have added Tailwind Air's seaplane to to the mix
Never been to New York or Washington DC before
Great video
Oh well they should have taken the DC Metro, not cabs. and where Is Nicky???
Great to see new energetic faces can’t wait to see more of these two they seem very competitive 👏
Did Penn Station name a train hall after Tom Brady's baby mama Bridget Moynahan? 🤣🤣🤣🤣I love that Madison showed the new Amtrak train hall (gorgeous!) but I wanted to see all that Acela has to offer too other than the 4 person seat she never showed either. I love train travel!! I was super stoked that TPG FINALLY did a U.S. segment in my corridor. DC/NY is a route I take often, but I take a charter bus. Rides can cost anywhere from $3 to $70 RT. The lower end is rarely available. I have paid $70 RT for 2 $35 RT seats. That was to ensure no one sat next to me which has never happened, but I wanted to guarantee it. I am really surprised that the plane trip was faster. A 40 min. plane ride is unreal! All of the stars aligned the day he traveled. I would love to see another NY/DC challenge lux style: Uber Black, first class flight to DC vs. The Jet bus which is a premium bus NY/DC. Seats start @ $100. Just an idea.
Where does Acela go apart from Washington DC from New York?
Boston to DC
@@flyerdon3116 the problem though is the Boston to NYC run is notorious for having the worst tracks Amtrak uses. They barely get up past 100 mph if that.
Bring back nick and Liam.
Is this on the wrong channel? No Nicky or Liam instead 2 Americans who I have no idea who they are
The new Acelas are incredible trains, but stupid as hell for the NEC. Trains there should focus on acceleration, and a max speed of 125mph, cause of all the curves and stops.
Which is now being slightly alleviated on the nj tracks with new straighter rails and higher speed rating for them. Hopefully with the new trains coming this will make a bigger difference.
The speeds are not limited to 125mph. Amtrak has plans to increase the speeds to 160mph along a third of the Northeast Corridor south of NYC. Going north, Metro North needs to upgrade their section of railroad. And they need to build a new section of track between Hartford and Providence.
the point guy us??? ooo
She left at least half an hour earlier than needed while he squeezed the recommended times.
She did not need to head to the train station at 9AM. So she has one hour advantage. There is an Acela at 9AM. Why didn't she take the 9AM one?
It's no contest since 1969.
My experience doing a similar "race" with a friend... He arrived perfectly on time via the train. I sat on the tarmac at LaGuardia for nearly 45 minutes because #LaGuardia. Leaving at rush hour means the morning bank has already cleared at LGA. With only one runway active, you easily can have a dozen planes queued up to take off which can take a very long time. But no doubt about it, I would choose Amtrak for this over flying any day.
What is "the morning bank"?
Now Boston to DC the plane bests Carla if the weather's good because the train trip is still over 6 hours. The flights is around 1 hr +
If nothing but for her Uber relaxed state, I'll take the train.
Points guy USA snooping in the UK?
Hm..
Recently was denied Acela boarding by an Amtrak gate agent in DC 3 mins before my scheduled departure - woman was clearly on a power trip b/c there were still people on the platform - as was I - and she claimed I couldn't continue on the platform to board for "safety." And I thought the $411 roundtrip Acela fare might mean that they treat you with some care and compassion - nope! Mind you it was 3 mins BEFORE my departure time. Amtrak has a monopoly and they do not compete on service or anything else... point is add time - you can't just arrive 10 mins before your train and expect smooth sailing!
It is very difficult to have train companies compete among them... . the issue is management.
Not seeing if it doesn’t have Nicky.
Isn't the whole poinbt of this channel is to show how to travel using your travel points and how to get them yet they have stopped doing that.
The Points Guy UK, a UK spin off of an American channel (The Points Guy US), doing a video in the US with Americans. What is the point?
Hey you White House!
She'll write you off!
I knew the train would win!
The plane won
Loving Madison. A confident woman with cats....what's not to love :)
@12:59 no you vanet he flew new state of the art E175, while you rode a 1985 Acela train based on the oldest TGV design, you bill beat him in style when the aveila liberty goes into service, untill then PLANE WINS!
Acela trainsets were designed in 1996, not 1985.
hola
In general, train will always be superior. Especially environmental benefits
who ever wins teh race to dulles will be using silver line, end of story.
Bring back the UK boy's nothing against these 2 but no need for a change
Don’t like the new crew
First
Seats on planes are usually more comfortable
For a travel related channel he get's way to fake-nervous about arriving at LGA 1 hour prior departure and finding his gate...
hey train traveller you shouldn't say bad word like that
mar wins the match just for fun
I travel that route at least quarterly. After doing this for several years I can confidently say that flying is the superior method of travel. The flight takes 45 minutes, costs about the same, and security has never been an issue in the dozens of times I have been through there. The train gets delayed constantly and is far too expensive. In my experience, business class for the train is usually $200-250 RT. Flying economy costs about $200. Flying first class costs about ~$250-$300. I have price compared and flown first class for less than a business class Amtrak ticket on a few occasions.
But you need to reach the airport or the city. Train is superior, sorry.
Bad decision to merge the content between the UK and US version. This is not relevant at all to most of the UK.
Completely irrelevant sadly , where’s Liam and Nicky
Sorry, these two are both irritating…
