*NOOOO!!!* A real Gefilte fish must be made by an experienced grandma. Canned gefilte fish is disgusting.
Also, Gefilte fish translates to ''Stuffed fish'' from Yiddish. Truly traditional Gefilte fish is a sliced fish stuffed with this. AND SERVED WITH CARROTS!
The "stuffing" is that when it is boiled they used to wrap it up in the fish skin for cooking
Not just the skin, also a this layer of the fish flesh. I'm Jewish and my grandma makes real gefilte fish and also teaches me how to do it myself. ;)
I'm Jewish and I make both my bubby's recipes. Learned it from them and they learned it from their parents etc. I know my Gefilte, Lita, Warsaw, and Oberlandish styles. And have eaten god knows how many types at Bar Mitzvah's. friends houses, Kiddushes, etc.

( I saw a movie and in it Moses had 15 Commandments from God but one of the stones with them written by gGod slipped from hes hands and shattered . I thought there was something amiss here. I'm not Jewish but my aunty loves gefilte fish so we eat it regularly, and this is definitely not real gefilte fish. I don't love gefilte fish, it's too sweet for me, but it's not as bad as this.

There are store that sell fresh Gefilte Fish, not from a jar. Much better. Sweeter. Traditionally eaten with horseradish. I love it.

Where ma Jewish homies at?! I never had gefilte fish cuz I'm a vegetarian but that's an iconic food of us the Jewish people! I hope next Jewish food they taste is Jahnun! My mom makes THE BEST jahnun ever! And the best thing is, it's not as fattening as the frozen jahnun in stores because butter is used instead of some sort of food that is like butter but has more calories.

Fiskbullar are usually made from cod and haddock.
Gefilte fish according to wikpedia is carp, whitefish and pike. (karp, sik och gädda) and eaten with horseradish (pepparrot) so I assume it tastes a bit more like pike.

So, I happened to run into a jar in the discount section at Kroger yesterday. Ok, I've been meaning to try it for years. It's reminiscent of the fried fish patties my grandmother made, just cold, boiled instead of fried, and in jelled fish broth. So... it's ok. Then I saw a few suggestions of horseradish and dill, so I tried adding those. Ok, it's actually really good.
And yes, I like the jelled broth.

The best gefilte fish I've ever had was handmade, and served warm in a vegetable stock. The canned stuff is nowhere near as good (I actually hate Manishewitz jajaja).
Yup. The kind served in glatt kosher markets is INFINITELY better too. Not canned. Not in a weird fat sausage shape usually. Not slimy. Just a dryer pleasant taste I liken to "Chicken meatloaf" with the tiniest hint of fish served with carrots on the side.
It's not sooooo bad with horseradish. But, I try to avoid it on Passover and other Jewish holidays. You should try chopped liver.
I've been in arguments about this. I'm only part Jewish, so I get "but no you just don't have a taste for it or understand." No, it's objectively terrible.
@@SunnyDementia it's objectively 500 times better than chopped liver though lol. That stuff ACTUALLY tastes like what gefilte fish "sounds like it would taste", instead of just being moderately decent if you get cheap (sweet can) and really good if made in a kosher deli. Seriously. Go to a glatt market and order some. It doesn't come in a can, isn't slimy, and tastes so much better you wouldn't believe it.

I love gefilte fish! But I was raised in a Jewish home, so I’m used to it. I can definitely understand why people are hesitant - it looks absolutely gross. But if you like fish, it’s pretty good.

Gefilte fish is slightly more appetizing when it is homemade and cooked in rolls. But as an Orthodox person, I still have no idea why we eat this stuff.

Proper old fashioned gefilte fisch is actually served filled into the skin of a fish (gefilte fisch means filled fish) so the fish looks whole but is really deboned and filled mashed fish. It's very difficult to get right so that it looks realistic.

see we all grew up on jarred gefilte fish, but now it's time to grow up, get the frozen gefilte fish loaves that you simmer yourself in water with carrots and onions, it's really sweet, it has a nicer texture, and there's no gel! it's so yummy.

I bought 2 jars of it (Rokeach Old Vienna Gefilte Fish) 'cause it was on sale and I thought it was fried fish fillets in batter (think fish n chips). I did wonder why it was in jelled broth, though. (You eat it cold??) When I got home, I Googled it to see how people ate or served it. I didn't realize how iconic it was. The varied reactions are making me nervous, though. Haven't seen anyone raving about it. Here goes...
I was surprised that gefilte fish is often fried in the UK; that might be interesting.. Some nice spicy horseradish is a good accompaniment..

I married a Jewish gal, and so eat gefilte fish at Passover. At that meal, horseradish is already present, so I like to smear some on top of the gefilte fish. The biting flavor of the horseradish cuts down on the sweetness of the jellied broth, but it doesn't do much for the texture...

Judaism is a maternal religion meaning that it follows the mother. If your mother isn't Jewish (prior to your birth) and you did not convert, then you are not Jewish. You can however be raised in a family that is interfaith where your father is a Jew. That doesn't make you Jewish nor does it make you half Jewish. It just means you were raised by interfaith parents.
Of course they didn't like it. It's from a jar and old. They should taste fresh ones.
