The owl house is another queer show with new episodes releasing this year. It's an animated series following a bisexual human girl who stumbles upon a realm of witches and monsters and falls for a lesbian witch. Its very wholesome and cute!

I am SO excited for Heartstopper. I've been reading the webcomic for years and it's definitely one of my absolute favourites. It doesn't shy away from serious topics (like mental health, homo/bi/transphobia, etc.), but treats them in a very respectful and real manner, while still being gentle enough to keep things easier and light-hearted and not making the audience unnecessarily relive trauma. Reading it always makes me feel like a teenager again, but in the best way. I honestly can't wait and I'm so happy the author is so involved in the adaptation!
I am incredibly excited for the show, my only worry is that since I live in a different country than the creator i may not be able to watch it without pirating, but i ell dont want to pirate it bc I don't want to cheat the author out of money
I love heartstopper as well, as a queer girl growing up in a conservative town I know how confusing realizing you're not straight can be. And the author portrays this in the story incredibly, sometimes all you know is you love someone. And that's ok

Especially can't wait for Heartstopper! Also, V. E. Schwab will release her first show called "First Kill" this year. It's about two girls, one a vampire and the other a vampire hunter, who'll fall for each other. I love V. E. Schwab's books, so I can't wait for their show!

for fans of cartoons like The Owl House, I would absolutely recommend Craig of the Creek. It is filled with queer characters of all ages, genders, and races, and includes characters with unconventional family structures like single fathers. its a series filled with joy and nostalgia, and its recently been renewed for a 5th season, a movie, and a spinoff, i adore it
Seconding!! COTC is one of my fave comfort shows :) Definitely more gentle & slice of life than TOH, but I recommend all “kids cartoon” fans give it a try!!

The fact that they casted Riley, Ellie's best friend who also is gay, gives me a lot of hope that they will explore her sexuality and relationship at least partially in the show. I'm so excited for it

Killing Eve is starting its fourth and final season in February, so I'm looking forward to that. For those who don't know, it's about an MI5 agent and an assassin (both female) who become obsessed with each other.

I'd like to add that it's highly likely that Ellie's sexuality in The Last of Us will be explored from the get go because her love interest/best friend from the game was also cast and is appearing in the first season and that relationship happens prior to Ellie and Joel meeting.
The story about your Dad getting excited to tell you about Gentleman Jack was utterly heartwarming! And What We Do In The Shadow is possibly the best comedy series ever made. Every cast member is brilliant.
And Maya and MJ in one show??? I'm gagging--
Another series to look out for this year is Heartbreak High!! it’s a reboot of the original Australian series from the 90’s and the character descriptions tell us that they’re will be some queer characters with descriptions including “the chiccest lesbian” or “who has slept with half the girls, and even a few boys” along with a character description that uses they/them pronouns.
Another great show that I would recommend is The Owl House. It's currently in it's second season (the second half should be coming out early this year). It features many queer characters, the main character, Luz, is actually bi
and her girlfriend amity is a lesbian. it shows the both of them in an openly gay relationship. theres also a canon, openly nonbinary character. felt like those were also important to mention lmao

Another really great queer show that was new in 2021 and got renewed for a second season is "We Are Lady Parts"! It's a super fun story about an all girl feminist punk band with all the main characters being british-muslim woc. One of the band members is queer, and I won't spoil how her relationship goes, but I love how her queerness is a non-issue. There was no homophobia and no othering of her character for being queer. I'm also excited for season 2, because there's such a chemistry and tension between the two leads that I really hope develops in the next season!

don’t know if you’re aware of the thai bl scene but i cannot recommend NOT ME enough. so far it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen, it’s tackling some very important topics from class to law to inequality to disability, as well as discussions about lgbtq+ rights. the plot and characters are so strong and it’s giving ‘be gay and fuck the system’ as a tv show. i cannot recommend it highly enough
and also ofc bad buddy as one of the most heartfelt and sincere pieces of queer media I’ve ever seen. it is the gay love story we all deserve to see in all its beautiful and emotional glory
Yes!!!!!! I came here to recommend the same things: Not Me and Bad Buddy. I feel like BL has a bad reputation as being "not really qu*er" or super heteronormative or problematic. And some of that stuff exists but in general, I really don't think it's significantly worse than anything you'd find in straight romance.
BUT even if you have high standards, both Not Me and Bad Buddy are still knockouts. And it's worth noting that Not Me was directed by a trans woman, and Bad Buddy was directed by a gay man. I feel like when people say BL is "not really qu*er," they're minimizing the contributions people like P'Aof and now P'Nuchie are having in that space.
AND Bad Buddy has literally the sweetest sapphic couple I have ever seen portrayed on screen. Simple, happy, innocent, no cheating, and they have real chemistry. I legit have never seen a sapphic couple portrayed like that before -- and I've been searching for a long time lmao.
To anyone who wants to check these shows out: they're both on RUclips, with subtitles, uploaded legally by the production company. Bad Buddy has finished, I think Not Me is about halfway done. Don't sleep on BL, especially Thai and Taiwanese BL.

hello I bit late but I agree with everything, and at the moment Thai BLs are getting better and better, from last and this year we got a lot of good series like 180° langitude passes trough us, The Eclipse(it hase some issues but it is a very good coning of age), Moonlight Chicken, My only 12%, The Warp Effect that isn't a BL but a Lakorn but has so many amazing examples of queernes

I’d also add Star Trek Discovery on this list that’s in its 4th season and has been renewed for 5th season. It has gay, nonbinary, bisexual, and trans characters, and while it’s not focused on specific LGBTQ+ topics in the narrative because it’s a futuristic world where we’ve moved beyond the struggles of those issues in this utopian future, it’s just great to see queer characters get to just exist and go on adventures and do all the kind of things that straight characters get to do.

More shows with new seasons this year are Love Victor getting S3 this summer (and final season, sadly) Derry Girls getting S3 (and final season), Killing Eve getting S4 (and final season). And Good Trouble and Good Omens are also getting new seasons at some point!
i have been waiting for derry girls s3 for so long, they had time for 2 red nose day sketches and two of the actresses have done fully other series in the mean time lmao, give it to me !!!

The Owl House season 2B will be dropping sometime soon (hopefully spring), a super queer Disney show with a bisexual MC, her lesbian witch girlfriend, pansexual magic mentor/mother figure and her non binary love interest. One of the MC's friends has two dads as well. Highly recommend to everyone, it's a fantastic blend of Narnia/Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings style fantasy with its own unique spins!
Actually, Eda is bi! The creator subtly confirmed it when she liked a Twitter post calling her bi and you can see a bi flag on her cheat box in the episode "Wing It Like Witches". But I do agree that everyone should watch it!
Queer as folk is getting a reboot?! I'm I'm intrigued. New Orleans sounds like a really good setting for a queer show so I'm so excited to hear about it

If you like high fantasy, I'd recommend watching The Wheel of Time! Season 1 came out recently and Season 2 will come out in 2022. The first season isn't perfect but I nevertheless enjoyed it immensely, and it has a really well executed queer twist involving one of the protagonists that as a long-time fan of the book series I was really hoping to see on screen ;)
Yes! I love those two. Have you read the books or are you show only? I am a first time reader on book 7. I am glad they made the relationship more than a "college-type away at school experimentation fling" type of relationship like in the books, but that it is a more real fleshed out relationship. I also love the poly relationship between Alanna and her warders which gives me hope on how they will present the relationships a certain character has later with their 3 love interests.
I loved that. I'm not entirely sure how it's going to go moving forward, due to the source material, you know? (Not intended to be any kind of pseudo-spoiler, don't worry, just that the characters don't spend a whole lot of time together in canon. But maybe that will change, a lot of things already have and they have lightning in a bottle with the people playing those characters, would be silly to waste it entirely.)
You probably filmed this before it was news, but there's an asexual character in the new season of "Legends of Tomorrow", who is the first openly ace superhero in a TV show (actually the first in any adaptation since there are not any openly ace superheroes in movies either).

Motherland: Fort Salem is going to be airing its final season in 2022 and it’s got a lead f/f couple with other queer characters as well (and queer people in front of and behind the camera).

Came back here to scream about ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and I can see lots of other comments along the same lines. If you’re one of the 3 queer people left who hasn’t seen it, GO WATCH NOW. It is the most delightful and queer tv show I’ve seen in a long time!

I have to admit, I have to take the boys with a pinch of salt because while Maeve's character is generally well handled, there's a LOT of early 2000s esque casually homophobic jokes about male characters that really pisses me off. It kinda falls into the "female characters can be queer because that's hot and unthreatening, but male queerness is icky" trope imo.
Yeah I was a little confused to see it on this list as Maeve and her love life are such a small part of the show. Most of the show being graphic and male humor. It is a good show but not if you’re looking for queer vibes.

Craig of the Creek is another animated show with several queer characters. Season 4 recently started and it's been announced that there will be a fifth season, a spin off, and a movie.
Heartstopper is one of the best shows I've ever watched. I love it SO much I stg everyone should read the comics and watch the show!

For the returning shows, I recommend Shadow and Bone who's getting a second season in 2022 ! It's adapted from the books sagas Grisha and Six of Crows. In season 1 we already had Jesper, a bisexual man, and this month it has been anounced that they casted Wylan, his future love interest !
I wish more people looked into thai entertainment instead because the lgbt shows that are airing/aired are really good in the last few months (i specially recommend bad buddy and not me)
Yes! And a lot of Thai shows are super accessible, too. Both of the shows you mentioned (which are great, and both directed by qu*er people) are on RUclips, subtitled, uploaded by the production company. I feel like BL gets a bad rap among western qu*er audiences for being too heteronormative and problematic, but not all of it is like that. (And tbh, the stuff that is is no worse than most straight romance....)

@@Abraham-gf1oi my bad for saying romance when that wasn’t exactly what the original commenter asked, but KS is not “queer media” (thats what OP asked for) imo its the opposite- a strange fetishisation of (not) gay men written by a straight woman made for straight women. Definitely something to stay away from if youre looking for good queer rep. No hard feelings though mate.
Iron Maiden is a really really good book for poly anime villians and badass ladies (it's a true love triangle instead of a love tripod so it's firmly in the LGBT+ sphere even though there are heterosexual relationships)

I stayed up til 5am binge-reading the entirety of the Heartstopper webcomic after watching this video, and I am now obsessed. I can’t wait to see how the show tackles all these important issues

This was already brought up a few times, but I would like to add my voice to recommend the (adult) animated series The Legend of Vox Machina, available on Amazon video. The first three episodes were released last week, featuring a diverse cast of characters and voice actors across the LGBTQ+ spectrum. It's based on the first campaign of Critical Role, a Dungeons and Dragons livestream featuring professional voice actors. They have 12 episodes planned for this arc, with compelling acting and immersive storytelling (and IMO, a perfect mix of humour and macabre dark fantasy). I couldn't recommend it enough!
Another great queer show is Love, Victor which plays in the Love, Simon universe. It’s getting it’s third season this summer and I personally can’t wait❤️

i ADORED the sex lives of college girls. i didn’t think i would enjoy it because i usually don’t go for college dramadies. but it was really funny and very cute. it had some very important story lines 👍

Crossing ALL my fingers… it’s super exciting that it is completely unknown since there’s no book to follow, and I really hope they make the relationship official. It’s lovely as it is, of course, but it would be so amazing to have concrete canon confirmation in the show that they are in love.
I can't make up my mind if the whole "angels aren't humans so don't expect them to express or experience love or sexuality like humans, but they certainly love each other" is extremely beautiful and qu*er, or if it's an advanced form of qu*er erasure. I'm not trying to cancel Good Omens or Neil Gaiman, and tbh I kind of love their relationship as it is. I just also have this slightly uncomfortable feeling that it's a copout.... Idk. It's one of those things that I would enjoy more simply if we were living in a world with an abundance of qu*er media, but since we have so little, my feelings are complicated.

For returning shows, Batwoman is running right now and seemingly everyone is gay. It is a superhero show that feels so well written. Even after losing Ruby Rose, the show blossomed in a whole different direction. It gives the much needed black lesbian experience that is missing and needed on TV

So excited for HeartStopper! I found the graphic novels in a bookstore a while ago while I was shopping with my partner. I always love a good queer love story, but this story really captivated me. I fell in love with the characters and their adorable relationships. I will be buying the rest of the author's works next time I go shopping, but I also really can't wait to see the series. I hope it captures my heart in the same way the comics did.
I highly recommend The Untamed. It’s not a new show it’s from 2019 but it’s a gay love story and REALLY good, it’s Chinese though so you’ll have to watch it with subtitles
I couldn't agree more! I had absolutely zero expectations going into The Untamed, and it turned out to be one of my favourite shows/stories ever. It's confusing and seems difficult to get into at first, but I'd easily say it's a modern masterpiece

I would add Sasaki and Miyano to this list. Super sweet BL anime, I think three eps are already out. I adored the manga and have high hopes for the series.
Sometimes BL isn't necessarily considered good representation because a lot of it can be somewhat fetishistic, made by and for straight women without much consultation or involvement from gay/bi/pan men, but I've heard that Sasaki and Miyano avoids a lot of those problems and have really high hopes for it!

Gossip Girl 2021 is quite queer. Of the seven main characters, 4 are lgbtqia. Plus it’s the first show since Sense8 that I’ve had hope for the canon poly ship to stay stable and happy. You don’t get a lot of that in media.

I am beyond excited for Heartstopper! I’ve read it so many times and it handles so many issues so well. The romance is so cute and healthy. It really does capture high school romance in a way I haven’t seen much anywhere else

Not Me has been the most amazing show this year! Actually there is a slew of gay Asian content that is out and about. If you ever wanted to dive into the world of the subtitled LGBT+ series, I think you'd be surprised just how much better they have gotten in the past years (definitely outshining many modern American shows).
Great that you do an updated on series too watch out for, but i think you should include on what streaming services they are on (Like netflix/disney+ ....)
