13:46 Learn more about keto and intermittent fasting!
Today we’re going to talk about the first sign of kidney disease. The kidneys are filters that convert blood into urine and recycle your fluid, protein, nutrients, and hormones.
Other functions of the kidneys include:
• Coordinating the amount of fluid in the body
• Converting vitamin D into the active form of vitamin D
• Regulating blood pressure
• Regulating the hydration of the body
• Eliminating toxins from the body
High blood sugar levels can lead to diabetic nephropathy, one of the most common causes of kidney failure and end-stage renal disease.
The first sign of kidney disease is nocturia, a situation where you urinate often during the night. Other common signs of kidney disease are protein in the urine and edema.
I have found that the best way to stop nocturia is to focus on improving the person’s diabetes first. A high-carb diet is ultimately behind diabetes.
The best ways to support your kidneys:
1. Go on a keto diet
2. Do intermittent fasting (one and a half meals a day)
3. Consume plant phytonutrients
4. Take benfotiamine
5. Take alpha-lipoic acid
6. Consume turmeric

NEED HELP AND ADVICE: I just got my blood test a few weeks ago: apparently, my egfr is 89-90. I’m 38 years old with no diabetes, normal blood pressure, normal red blood cells, no protein in urine (light yellow abs clear). The only thing they found was I was high on cholesterol (I did consume a lot of eggs), high in vitamin d, high on b12 and barely low on MCV (meaning I’m a little anemic). Is there a way for me to increase my egfr? Am I at risk?
@@rs7458 you are perfectly fine. That’s a normal GFR for someone in your age group and if your muscle mass is higher than average it is likely higher than the calculated value. We do 24 hr urine tests and in many cases the actual GFR is higher than the calculated one. If your creatinine is around 1 you are fine.
@@rs7458 - Appears to me that your eGFR is great, look up the ranges.
@@rs7458Your eGFR (which is only an estimate of how your kidneys are filtering blood) is within the “normal” range actually.
Lower eGFR numbers = weakening kidney function
Kidney function declines slowly with age as well, especially 60+.
So I would say not to worry.
From what I found out, high vit D levels could be due to supplements.
(2,000 IU a day is safer than higher doses-high vit D means high calcium levels in the blood which is harmful for other structures like the heart & bones)
You egfr is perfect. Under 60 is abnormal.
29 years old born with damaged kidneys, 18 got my first kidney transplant, dialysis at 26, and just got second kidney transplant at 28 yeah definitely made me focus on staying as healthy as I can I don't want anyone to experience that at all it's draining and gets to a point to where you just want to give up so just take care of yourself people
My heart goes out for you
Take care of yr
Self
It's kind of academic if you look after yourself. It's the NR meds that eventually trash your organ(s). Doctors carefully don't tell you that.
Just had my transplant last year I’ve had type 1 diabetes for 45 years. The dialysis was the worst part. My new kidney was donated by my wife and me eGFR is at about 90.
I am sorry you have to go through that at such a young age. I know how you feel. Staying positive is hard when you’re just drained. I did home dialysis and worked the entire time so I had no energy for anything. I feel like a new person now. I hope this last transplant lasts awhile for you. Be blessed.
I went on dialysis at 21 for 1.5 years. First transplant at 23ish. First kidney only lasted 5 years. Dialysis for 5 more years after then a kidney perfect match for my sister and I will have had it for 12 years in December
What you put in is a serious thing. My granpa died last yr at 93. This dude got up every morning and ate ONLY fruits for breakfast, 1tablespoon of honey & one of olive oil. Lunch was fish or some meat with provisions like cassava, beet, dasheen etc. Very very rare he would eat flour or fried stuff. He always said "you must not eat too much". He was slim built, lived on his own & go have an occasional drink with friends at the bar. But he was always out the house. He told me "eat right, and never sit down in a house all the time like most old folk. Get out and socialise". I believe him 💯💯percent. I was over weight & made the effort and adopted his diet. I lost 50lbs in two months...my blood pressure & sugar levels are great. I use medication for my glaucoma, and i have never gotten the kind of readings i get now with that new way of living (i no longer call it my diet...its my new way of eating).
My grandpa lived to 85 dude drank heavy all the time and smoked cigars everyday 😆 probably could of lived to 100+
Extra virgin olive oil offers better benefits.

Fruits contain fructose, they also contain carbohydrates. But is not bad in small amounts, I just would eat less fruits and more vegetables.
I was 28 years old when I constantly had infections on the bladder and kidneys. A lot of pain, a lot of antibiotics. To the point my doctor said didn't have to test my urine, i could get antibiotics whenever i felt ill. One day I was sick of it. Quite literally... two years later I got diagnosed with hypoglycemia and then I started keto and IF. I have never had an infection since then. 34y old now, happy and healthy.
Very good. You mean hyperglycemia, I suppose.

I was getting kidney issues as a kid. Gave up soda and sweet tea. I haven't had one in decades now.
Here is something weird too. I started having prostate issues since age 17. Yes you read that right, AGE 17! I did keto 3 years ago and I aside from it fixing what I expected it to fix, it seems to have fixed a 29 year long prostate problem too. This is making me theorize that most of the common health issues that there are so many drug ads for on TV are linked to metabolic syndrome and learning to fix that, will help you take care of most things that affect the US population.
@@eva5637 isn't keto and fasting dangerous if you have hypoglycemia? Wouldn't your blood sugar get to low?
My husband has stage 4 kidney failure at the age of 49. Right before he seen the specialist I knew he was getting worse because his feet and ankles were swelling so bad. He's diabetic and his regular doctor wants him on insulin. I can tell when his sugar is up because he has to pee every 15 to 20 minutes. Its been a painful journey watching him decline, he's my best friend.
He needs to cut all sugar and carbs out hope he’s doing better
Try these suggestions
Give him no or low carb diet
He needs to cut sugar and do a low carb diet plan. Wish you the best.

I have diabetes and had cancer on my right kidney, lost my left kidney due to poly cystic disease, my doctor took me off my insulin told me to eat more I ended up in the hospital with through the roof sugar count..I trusted and thought he knew what he was talking about and I thought he knew what he was doing...hence is ONE reason I don't trust doctors....you seem much more understanding so I thank you for that...
So sad to hear, i wish you are doing well and having a healthy life
I'm kind of the same way, an believe that people unfortunately need multiple opinions when it comes to doctors diagnosing anything. Which isn't really the most affordable thing to do, but yeah I'm always concerned with going to see doctors. Benefits it seems like too many doctors are either trained poorly and/or paid to perform unnecessary tests, an issue medications. I've also had terrible experiences with dentists, which only screws up any trust I have for anyone working in these fields. An make more hesitant to get procedures done or go on for regular check ups.

There appear to be so many remedies for kidney related issues such as waking in the night many times which I have been having for more than 10 years. Ever since I started ketogenic diet and OMAD, my diabetes is virtually gone, I am insulin sensitive, have a very good BMI and the best of all is that I seldom wake up even once a night to urinate. My Fitbit says I get about 1.5 hrs of deep sleep and about 1.25 hrs of sleep interruption, resulting in solid 7 hrs sleep with sleep score always above 80%. Thanks to you Dr. Berg for producing these wonderful no frill videos that helped me to change my life style around. many thanks to COVID as well. By the way after taking medication for diabetes for almost 20 years, now I am free of any medications. I am 64 years old and am in best of health that i have never been before. thank you Dr. Berg, you are a gem and blessing to our humanity.
Thank you Dr Berg!
I've recently started feeling something wrong with my body and tried looking up symptoms online. I know that's usually not good, but that has resulted to me being worried enough to go to a doctor and do a general blood test and a bunch of other tests. I found out I am pre-diabetic. I'm now on a strict diet and have been exercising regularly.
Videos like this one saves lives.

Congratulations for making those changes in your life style👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Do KETO and you will see the results on your next year blood work👍🏼 My husband was borderline 2 years ago, we started KETO and not only his diabetes, but his blood pressure readings are excellent ! It doesn’t happen over night, but you will not only feel much better, but will see the results, just stick to KETO!
Please what is the keto mean or can you give me ur number let me call you please
As a Social Worker at a Dialysis clinic, this video hits very close to home for me. I witness the effects of end stage renal failure up close and it’s tough. My patients are so sweet, and many of them are hurting both physically and psychologically. Depression is very prevalent within this population, understandably so. I wish I could make it all better for them, but sometimes all I can do is be a listening ear and pray for them. One of my patients told me just yesterday, she said “Precious, please whatever you baby, take care of yourself so you don’t get diabetes.” I am definitely watching my sugar intake now, amongst other things.
I watched my mother go through dialysis for several years. I'm sorry but if it's not going to get better I don't see the point of preventing the inevitable. If it happens to me I'll probably do it once or twice just so I can get my affairs in order then let nature take it's course.
@@lennybuttz2162 I hear you.
Thank you so much for caring. The people that you see with the kidney problems really need that. I can tell you are a nice person. We need more of that.
I'm curious, if the kidneys convert the vitamin d into usable vitamin d.... Could the lack of usable vitamin d be a cause of depression in kidney disease patients? Or better yet, is depression a symptom of kidney disease?
@@lennybuttz2162 my condolences to you and your family. I can empathize with your perspective.

Not exactly. The best way to interpret Dr. Berg's information is that he is extending your life, not saving it. Remember, you will eventually die, so your responsibility is to eat/fast as best you are able to live a longer, healthier life.
Like the way you said that.

There was a time where I *definitely* had Nocturia. 3-6 months after it started I passed a big ol' kidney stone. The Nocturia went away a month after passing the stone. So the linkage between having to pee at night and
"something going on" with your kidneys makes sense to me.
Hw did u do it?

Where to find details on this to create a daily diet
@@dufffyhealth2089 - here - follow this: 1030AM. 2 eggs in an omelet. No cheese. Almond milk ok, but no dairy. Slice up some fruit too. Frozen blueberries are great. I like to put turmeric and organic pepper on the eggs to reduce inflammation in the body. Also I have a 1 vitamin D3 gel. 1 chewable zinc, and 1 vitamin C chewable. Remember no breads. That turns to sugars = more fat. - DO NOT SNACK BETWEEN MEALS - snacking starts the whole digestive process all over which is overtaxing your liver. That IS THE KEY. Only having a tea (nothing added - no sugars milk or anything to the tea) you can drink between meals - green tea is best. Make sure it’s organic add nothing to it. (WALK FOR 1 hour minimum during the day. Your body wants to move so move it. A sedentary lifestyle will clot the blood) next meal - 530pm SALAD ONLY with nuts almonds or walnuts or both. This can be a huge salad. DO NOT PUT CREAM STYLE DRESSING ON YOUR SALADS. Find alternative dressings like Italian etc. no cream dressings. - after your PM meal DO NOT EAT AGAIN ANYTHING! NO SNACKING AT ALL ! - this is the absolute key. Your liver must rest. After the 5:30pm meal do not eat again until 1030 AM THE NEXT DAY. - you can drink lemon water. In-between meal periods. I buy a low calorie lemonade ( I add lemons to it. I cut them and squeeze the juice into the drink so that I consume real lemon juice (for kidney recovery). I’m 60 yrs old. His technique is sound. Remember, NO SNACKING BETWEEN MEALS. THIS IS THE KEY TO LOSING WEIGHT AND HEALING THE KIDNEYS. 😀 let me know in a few weeks if your making progress. Good luck to you.

I am 29 and I was getting an urge to eat lots of carrots and citrus fruits. I got it checked up and I was having high blood sugar level. I managed to control it by stopping rice and potatoes in my meal and decreasing the amount of food by drinking lots of water.
All those phytonutrient fruits and vegetables helped me a lot and I reversed the high sugar levels. But now I don't like to eat junk food at all.
Can u share your diet please which helped you to reverse your diabetes
yes it happens when you quit eating fast food for long enough then the urges go away.
Also limit the hours you eat to 12 to 6pm

Keto works so does intermittent fasting
Just know that you are doing a great service to the world by explaining all of this in your channel. Thank you.
1. Reduce sugar in blood stream 2. Fasting 1 1/2 meal a day big meal protein and fat at 12pm and big salad with oil nuts argula cabbage at 3pm 21 hours of fasting. 3. Plant phytonutrients 4. Benfotiamine 5. Alph a lip pic acid 6. Turmeric
Saturated animal fat is toxic. The studies that have the replacement for the saturated animal fat being whole carbs shows heart disease to be much higher when a person consumes animal products. These are randomized controlled studies. The studies that show saturated fat is okay are the ones that DO NOT specify what the missing saturated animal fats were replaced with so people probably replaced them with fatty processed food, thus no difference between the saturated animal fats and the processed. So the influencers latch onto the idea that saturated animal fat is okay without realizing the study parameters are flawed. So in essence, plant based diets, whole plants, is best and healthiest.
I can't do fasting. I suffer from a binge eating disorder and I have to keep my blood sugar stable with macros, carbs, fat and protein at least six times a day or it triggers me into a binge.
This one speaks personally to me. I was born with kidney scarring and some other complications. For longer than I can remember even as a teenager I always asked them what more I could do to help myself and they always tell me take my meds and do as I'm told basically. Never once has anyone suggested anything within my control except drinking cranberry juice to prevent infections...that's literally all I've been offered as taking control. I have always resented this bandaid over an axe wound mentality in my area of the UK I've always had to deal with.
Thankyou for sharing more useful information with me in 15 minutes than my health care professionals have in over 25 years.
Sounds similar to our medical system here in the US. It's all about bandaids, not real solutions...

You are saving lives, Dr. Berg. I watch at least one video every day in order to stay on the Keto path and to have a healthy hatred of junk food.
Every American that is not actively fighting to rid their diet of added sugar needs this information ! Young and old if younger people had this information by age 12 they could easily notice small changes as they get older and change their paths to avoiding sugars with much more ease
How to convince my children to diminish sugar? I do like dates they are full of sugars but healthy sugars.
As someone whose father died as a result of kidney disease, induced by type 2diabetes, this subject hits really close to home. Thank you Dr. Berg. Not only does the topic of kidney disease resonate strongly with me, because it led to father's demise, it is particularly salient now because kidney disease is running rampant throughout the population, mainly as a result of just how rapidly type 2 diabetes is afflicting the population. I remember when my father first developed nephropathy in 1994, it was rare to see dialysis centers anywhere near my neighborhood. You had to drive a considerable distance to get to one. Now, I know of 3 kidney dialysis centers that are walking distance from my same neighborhood. When my father was first diagnosed with this disease, you would never see advertisements for dialysis on TV. Now advertisements for dialysis services are as common place as advertisements McDonalds
I very seldom see any over the air advertisements for either dialysis or McDonalds where I live. Non-stop advertisements for Medicare Advantage plans and lawyers advertising their services for everything under the sun fills up the TV airwaves in my part of the country, and leaves little remaining time for any other type of advertisements.
Thanks for sharing your story. My condolences regarding your father. All the best.
@@chuckd7423 my best advice is ditch your TV. I've not watched one since about 2008. I don't miss it at all. I can't stand advertisements, and that makes up 60-70% of TV watching. You can get by with the internet and streaming services if you want shows etc. It'll change your life, and probably rewire your brain for peace.

Hello Azure
how are you doing today?
I have been following your advice for about 4 months now. Ever since I had a mini stroke which really scared me. I was pre diabetic and overweight. I do Keto and IF. Not only have I lost 18 pounds so far but I feel so much better. I’m 71 and I haven’t felt this good in years. Thanksgiving was the worst - full of carbs. I felt awful for days afterwards. But now back on track.
Good job getting back on keto. Stay safe and healthy!
Congrats, Sally.Your testimony gives me hope.

I was recently diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, chronic renal failure and renal artery stenosis. I had a severe nosebleed and went to the hospital and my blood pressure was 265/144. It was terrible. I had an ECG, cat scan an ultrasound with dye and they found the damaged artery. I had no idea I was walking around with blood pressure that could kill me for who knows how long. Now I’m on BP medication, I take my BP twice a day. I have my blood taken every other month to check kidney function and then every 6 months I see a Nephrologist with extensive blood work. Monitor for a possible stent to open the artery. Life changes fast!
With how healthy you look and sound you really put a lot of relief on my nerves which are a bit shot due to stress from watching a very loved person suffer from kidney/ gallbladder issues that we are working on fixing
Glad to hear that. Hope the information here will help you.
This is very helpful knowledge and it angers me that medical care workers never explained what protein in the urine meant. I'm now fasting, as you shared. Thank you Dr, for helping us help ourselves.
I understand how you feel. I don't understand why they can't take time to educate their patients.

One thing that Dr Berg mentioned in another video really helped me. He said that if you're getting up at night to go pee, try to stop drinking any liquids 2 or 3 hours before bed time. It's been helping me to sleep through the night. - Thanks Dr Berg!
Glad it helped you. Thanks for sharing your experience here.
@@Drberg I drink a lot before I sleep because I have a fan blowing on me at night and if I don't hydrate I get a really dry mouth but it causes me to pee 2-3 times a night. Is that from nocturia or just too much water?

Type 2 diabetic here, with Crohn's, taking Entyvio infusions, plus Metformin, Glipizide and Farxiga. I just started seeing foaming in the urine, which you discussed in a video a while back. I thought I hadn't yet cleared all the toilet bowl cleanser, but when you talked about symptoms of kidney disease and mentioned it, you really caught my attention.
So, to my doctor, I mentioned the foaming that I was seeing, and she jumped right on it. We are going to change my meds.

On the 8 glasses thing, this depends a LOT on activity, food types ingested, even humidity. A lot of research shows that its a myth that you need to drink this actively. Be mindful of thirst, but in general you will know by urine color and thirst levels.
You're a genius. Well first of all thanks very kindly for your awareness creation. I have been able to save lives by creating this awareness too in Nigeria. I eat once a day and it's only at 6pm and i've been doing this for about 8 months with some exercise. 98kg and now 75kg . All the tingling on the feet and hands are gone, my blood sugar reads 3.2 before meal. My cholesterol back to 154. I drank soursop tea, burdock, ginger, turmeric and many others
Dr. Berg, just like everyone else, I am grateful for all you do! Stay strong and keep it going.
Is it just me or does Dr. Berg’s eyes really seem trustworthy? I’ve trusted him since my very first day on Keto and that was 6 yrs ago. Just plain good advice . . . thanks Doc 🤓
Love you, Dr. Berg! Thank you for your generosity and intelligence.
Each and every word in your talk gives knowledge at microlevel 🙏
My entire life as 3 of my siblings as my mother all have never slept through the night. My most recent blood panel work was very healthy. I follow 90% of Keto because of your info site. We just have tiny bladders. So make sure to let people know it's not only kidney disease that can cause this reaction. I'm 68 almost 69. I take zero meds. I don't lose weight even on Keto. I've been doing OMAD for a couple years now. But some days I just get tired of large salad. I best up my rabbit food.
I'm right there with you with a 12 oz bladder And I like to drink beer before I go to bed too Sometimes I get up 4 or 5 times on a bad night On a good night just once
Yeah I think my bladder might be small too. I did a urine test and had no reason to think I had kidney disease. I don't have diabetes and my blood pressure is generally fine as is my sugar levels.
Also your bladder gets trained to go to the bathroom too often.
I suspect my bladder is also very small. One thing that has really helped cut down trips to urinate is to spend more time urinating .. don't just jump up after the first stream ends .. wait .. be patient .. more will come and will make a difference. I have not watched the video yet .. nevertheless, hope this helps
Likewise, I consider myself pretty healthy at 72. Keto/low carb for 3 years. No meds. But i can't go 8 hours without getting up at least once. When we burn fat, as we do at night, isn't water one of the byproducts?

My grandma’s brother was a retired dr in El Salvador, my grandma was diagnosed with diabetes ( not sure what type) at 62 she told him her diagnosis and he made a diet plan for her, she was cured in a year her Dr. Couldn’t believe it. My grandma is 90 now
What was the diet plan?
@@patriciahercules6852 I wish I knew I was a kid when my grandma talked about it. I’ve asked my grandma but because our cultural background we don’t eat overly processed food so basically she said she stoped eating corn made products, tortillas, tamales anything made with corn, and bread, any flour made baked goods, and rice which is an staple food in our country. I was back home 4 years ago she eats lots of kidney beans and brócoli also we are from the sea port area and they eat lots fish only with salt fried in lard. She eats lots of herbs too, we have banana trees and coconut trees in our backyard so she eats seasonal fruit , she eats rather simple, she doesn’t eat lots of spices basically salt and lots of raw herbs like mint, basil, loroco flower and fried fish, random stews once a week with carrots, onions. We also ferment lots of peppers and eats lots of vinagre with our cabbage, we basically pickle cabbage in vinagre and salt. Anyways is more of a cultural take but she said taking away from her diet corn, flour, sugar and coffee is when she stopped feeling dizzy.
@@kcmabel4440 Thank you .
Hi, KC. Your grandma likely had type 2 diabetes, as that condition is one that develops in humans due to diet, whereas with type 1 a person is born with and is irreversible, requiring insulin for life because their body does not make insulin.

Hello Ann
how are you doing today?
This is really helpful info! One detail to clarify, you shouldn’t be getting up during the night to urinate IF you are stopping fluid intake after dinner. But I’m a firm believer that hydration during the night is important, so I drink water right before I sleep as well anytime I get up to pee. So it should be worth clarifying that. 😋👍🙏🏻
Thanks your comment helped me, because the video worried me. I drink I pee its natures way. Doesn't mean kidney's to blame.
I drink water all night long, every time I get up, usually 3-4 glasses a night.

@@miryreina925 There are many exercises that target the kegel muscles along with the pelvic floor and all the other muscles that support your uterus, bladder, etc. The ones that helped me the most were through Pilates. I started with just mat workouts on my own, then moved on to work with a therapist who used Classical and Clinical Pilates as Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation. She retired at the beginning of the shutdowns. I now own a Pilates Reformer and Chair and am continuing exercises on my own.
If you wish to pursue this method, be sure to research and stick to Pilates that adhere to the essence of the original Joseph Pilates fundamentals. Just the info I NEED ~ so grateful to you Dr. B! My Nephrologist just wants to push one pill on top of another pill. Has never asked about my diet, has never bothered to explain CKD (3b) or offer health-promoting strategies ~ just more pills, get bloodwork done again and make another appointment in 3 months. I worked in healthcare so I am intimately familiar with its stressors and challenges. I also know that medicine is a business and I get that the primary goal of business is to stay in business. Just boggles my mind though, that American MD's won't get out of bed with pharmacology reps (and "Big Pharma" won't get out of bed with the FDA!) and start addressing root casues instead of just controlling or managing symptoms with meds. (Sometimes even worse: do nothing at all ~ "Let's just wait and see.") It's a smart and lucrative business model as it ensures the continuous return of paying customers (keeping existing patients) vs getting them healthy enough to not need you and having to constantly seek an ongoing revenue stream by pulling in new patients. Medical education would have to change for this to occur though, and this seems insurmountable (so was a vacinnation for polio and an effective treatment for AIDS), but of course it isn't. It's just hard, and where there is no will, there's no looking for a way. * SIGH *
Very will explained!! Watching this video itself explains sysmptoms and treatment. Thank you, Dr. Berg!!!
