Not to diminish Graf's accomplishments, but Seles after just a few short years on the tour had already amassed 8 Singles Grand Slams before her 20th birthday. She even still had 3 more Grand Slams to play in 93 before her 20th birthday, but the stabbing happened. No one in the Open Era has won that much and that fast from the moment they turned professional until their 20th birthday. Whereas Graf had been on the tour since the early 80's and was sitting at 11 Singles Grand Slams at the moment of the stabbing. Seles was already just 3 away from tying her. Although Graf was still leading their head to head meetings at that time and got 3 wins over Seles in Monica's first year as a professional player , they met in 4 Grand Slam finals before the stabbing with Seles winning 3 of them. Although we will never know now what could have been if the stabbing hadn't happened, one thing is for certain we were all robbed of a rivalry between the two that could have been similar to Navratilova and Evert.
...unfortunately (also for Graf) we were betrayed of a rivalerly that see,ed to be in Navratilova-Evert-footsteps... and as we know about all long time rivaleries, such players push each other to new levels of their game - force the opponent towards new tactics, stratetgies and to the use of nedw strokes. theur matchs were usually 3 setters and super close. nothing was there decided yet. and i keep it with bud collins who ince said: its very likely that Graf "with her iron will, ambition and unreached workethics" would have found an answer.
Hingis was even younger as Seles and broke the always-the-youngest-records. we know very well that Hingis ended far from becoming best player in history. just to win much when young doesnt guarantee becoming best at the end. and quiet friendly: the upcoming hard hitters like Serena and Venus Williams (4 wins .1 defeat / 9 wins 1 defeat ),Davenport (10 wins .2 defeats) underlined merciless the weakness of Monicas double handed game on both sides against them. Grafs statistics look there much better: 7 wins 6 defeats to Davenport / Graf - Venus Williams 3:2 / Graf - Serena 1:1 (Graf won another time at hongkong exhibition tournament). Grafs game showed a much bigger variety to different types of players.

Players are indeed stronger and better thanks to advances in physical training, nutrition and psychology. So true on both counts. But yes, losing never entered her mind in her first career. Upon returning to the game, she ALWAYS had self doubt in big matches.
Monica a much better retriever than people remember, helped by her long limbs. Steffi's overhead always slightly dodgy, she was very prone to mis-time it.
....and failed exactly by that to have any chance against the upcoming hard hitters like the williams sisters and davenport. they dominated Seles h2h. both handed both sides just limits the reach (1 step more each side) it increased the distance to the ball. they were also hard hitters like monica- but they werent limited in reach as she was. Graf btw did much better against those hard hitters: she has positive h2h on venus and davenport and finished 1.1 against Serena.

I disagree with that. I started playing competitive tennis in the 1990's (at the National level, but never reached pro level of course). I can tell you that the equipment, strings, and other technology were not nearly as good as it is now. As a consequence, you had to often improvise to make the best shots. Watch matches from the 1950's compared to the 1970s... watch 1980s compared to the 2000s... this is exactly what they will say in 2040 watching matches from 2020. While the power is better as technology advances, the skill of the player is not. That's why it is so tough to distinguish GOAT status. One could say Serena Williams... but how would she have matched up using the racquet technology from 1980s like Graf & Navratilova? It's impossible to say.
