    Before the Internet made chess easily accessible, we sparred in the parks and clubs, at tournaments and schools, in hospitals and jails, back rooms and cafes, and all varieties of venues.
    Face to face, often with quippish smack talk, usually good natured. Life long friendships formed, a cast of characters fill one's memory bank, important life lessons digested, this is why chess is a live sport. Just like making the beast with two backs is better live than from a feed.

    Park chess player hustlers often talk trash for several reasons, rooted in psychology, entertainment, and culture:
    ### 1. **Psychological Warfare**:
    - **Distraction**: Trash talk is a classic form of psychological manipulation. By talking trash, players attempt to distract their opponents and make them lose focus, leading to mistakes. It can break the concentration of even experienced players.
    - **Intimidation**: Chess hustlers use trash talk to project confidence and dominance. The aim is to intimidate their opponents, making them feel pressured or less capable. This can make a player second-guess their moves or feel discouraged.
    ### 2. **Entertainment**:
    - **Spectacle for the Audience**: In public settings like parks, chess games often attract onlookers. Trash talk adds an element of entertainment to the game, making it more engaging for spectators. It turns the match into a performance, not just for the players but for those watching.
    - **Building Reputation**: Hustlers thrive on reputation. Being known for sharp wit and bold trash talk can attract more players and potential challengers. It also adds to the persona of being a “tough” opponent.
    ### 3. **Cultural Influence**:
    - **Street Chess Tradition**: In many street or park chess scenes, especially in places like Washington Square Park in New York City, trash talk has become an ingrained part of the culture. It's seen as part of the game's rhythm, blending strategy with streetwise banter.
    - **Competitive Edge**: In some urban environments, trash talk is a way to assert dominance and express oneself in a competitive space. It reflects a broader cultural practice of verbal sparring, where wit and quick comebacks are as valued as physical or mental prowess.
    ### 4. **Confidence and Hustling**:
    - **Bluffing**: Chess hustlers often bet on games, and trash talk can serve as a form of bluffing. By talking a big game, they may convince opponents that they are more skilled than they actually are, potentially causing opponents to make more cautious or flawed moves.
    - **Self-Motivation**: Some players use trash talk as a way to pump themselves up. By vocalizing their confidence and deriding their opponent, they keep their own morale high.
    In essence, trash talk in park chess is part psychological strategy, part entertainment, and part cultural expression. It adds to the lively, competitive atmosphere and is a hallmark of the hustler's approach to the game.

    • @ewallt
      @ewallt 2 месяца назад +2

      @@jamesmacdougall2694 I watched him play a decent player, maybe 1700, with 1 to 5 odds, plus either a Queen, two rooks, or two bishops, the three alternating. He easily won when giving the two bishops and time odds, but had trouble with the other two, although he could pull of some wins. He’d do crazy stuff like that. There’s also stories of masters trying to like the video, trying to hustle the hustler, and, of course, getting destroyed by Dzinzhi (even 5 min games) and having no idea who they were playing, at one point a top 15 player in the world in classic time controls, and, just guessing, maybe top 5 at speed chess.

      Yea Judit was top ten in world 4 long time

    • @Pfefferhaubitze
      @Pfefferhaubitze 2 месяца назад +3

      Judit was Number 8 in the world 20 years ago (2004). For a long time she was the youngest Grandmaster ever. She beat nearly all World Chess champions, who played at her time - including Kasaparov, Anand and Carlsen. There were nice games with Alexej Shirov, where she outcalculated the 2nd magican of Riga and won very tactical games. Same with Anand.
      At the beginning of her carreer she had the problem, that she couln't always start in mens tournaments, now known as open tournaments. This may have slowed down her development a bit, not to compete against the strongest opponents. Otherwise she would probably have made it even further than 8th place on the Fide rating list.
      I'm not completely informed, but the next best place of a female chess player I know is place 49 (historical Elo list). This is Vera Menchik, Czech World Champion with the famous Vera Menchik club. She was killed by a V-1 in London, WW2/1944. At the moment there is no women in the Fide top 100.
