You may have watched this match countless times, but it never gets old. Two all-time best players in history in their second meeting. Steffi and Monica 💖 Enjoy!
Same goes for virtually any great player of the past. Laver 1969, McEnroe 1984, Becker 1989, Navratilova 1984, Hingis 1997. They'd all wipe the floor with the current crop of baseline robots.
I love watching these uploads with graf demolishing the top players of the past, but it comes with a notion of sadness that this tennis queen's career came to an end such a long time ago. Tennis has never been the same for me since. All the more important that her matches are saved for eternity for current and future generations to watch
To think that Monica only won 4 games against Steffi on grass.... I'm sure that the 1989 Steffi would trample all over the current top 10❤ my queen Steffi ❤️
oh please, seles was only 15 here. whats amazing is how seles played zina tougher at wimbledon the next year than graf did the next round in 90.and seles got a bad line call called out where chalk flew up and it cost her match point and the match,
If Monica had not been stabbed, I don’t think she would have overtaken Steffi in GS titles because Steffi would always have the advantage on fast surfaces like Wimbledon and the US Open.
Nah. Steffi wasnt that great in the Us Open, defeated by the likes of Sánchez Vicario and Sabatini. Post stabbing ,out of shape Seles bageled her and Graf could only won 95's USO final with the help of the chair judge. Pre stabbing Seles would owned Graf there also, with Graf winning Wimbledon.
100% fact. Steffi Graf would have won Wimbledon and US Open over Seles without the stabbing. Pre stabbing Seles never ever beat Graf on faster courts. Having said that, I do think Seles would have won FO’93 and FO ‘94 without the stabbing. Pre stabbing Seles only beat Graf on clay 3 times and on slow hard court once. Graf was leading their head to head 6-4 even before the stabbing.
@@juanantoniobl7550 Seles never was a superb player on FAST hard courts. She played 12 tournaments on such surfaces in her two great years 1991/92 and won only 6 of them (50 %). She lost her focus during that Wimbledon final because her mind was preoccupied with trying to not grunt. It would have been much more interesting without the grunting controversy as her game was clearly off the mark. Monica says that she regrets not being herself on that that day in an effort to please everyone else instead.
@@meneerkonijn74 What is maybe even more stunning is that Steffi lost only 45 matches in the 1987-96 decade. Just 4.5 matches per year on average! Seles lost 5 matches in her peak year 1992.
This was a strange match from Monica Seles. You could tell the loss was mainly due to psychological pressure from Navratilova and co complaining about her grunting. This resulted in Seles not hitting as freely or as hard as she did in previous rounds. Graf did play well but the match should had been much closer.
you are mistaken. it is 1989 Wimbledon R4. complains about grunting happened in 1992 before Wimbledon final where Seles played almost in complete silence. but main fact is that Seles always struggled on fast surfaces.
@@robertwill23 ah yes. I am mistaken. I got the year wrong. However Seles pretty much said exactly what I said about her Wimbledon final on grass against Graf. Had Seles actually won any slams up to this point (Wimbledon 89) yet or was she still just a developing player? And weak on grass? Yeah will concede grass was her weakest surface. But weak? Definitely not. I believe Seles won Eastbourne, beat arguably the best grass court player of all time at Wimbledon (Navratilova), and got to a Wimbledon final.
