Just to clarify, Sony phones reboot themselves when removing the tray so that whenever you have a password on your lockscreen, and a thief stole the phone, remove the tray, it will automatically reboot back into the lockscreen to prevent the intruder to access your files.
Yeah it's pretty annoying too, but not a major deal breaker, considering I won't be removing or replacing my SIM Card/s and SD Card every single time.

I have this phone for about a week now. To say, this phone is utterly stunning, would be an understatement. It is truly an astonishing phone. That is not an exaggeration. The 4K HDR screen is the highlight. I get nearly 5 days of charge on it without stamina mode on the 3300 mAH batery. The glass and aluminum construction makes it feel like the most special phone you would ever hold.

In the way I use it, I am getting close to 5 days. Stamina mode off, occasional use, internet browsing once in a while, checking emails after every 1 - 2 hours and text messages every now and then. Call BS all you want, but that is what I am getting. I cannot tell you any differently.
I probably get around 2 days of battery time if I use mine sparingly. Usually it hits 15% after being on from 7 AM to 12 AM with moderate use.
It's not amazing but definitely workable.
With moderate use (some videos, some whatsapp messages and calls here and there and email checking periodically), I get 2 days. If I use it very scarcely, I can stretch it to 3 - 3.5 days. I have stamina mode turned off, full brightness and super vivid mode color gamut (X-reality engine on).

Bezels is not a problem because it really helps to hold the phone without interrupting the screen or creeping out when you play games.
sure it looks ugly but useful.
if you see any Samsung edge or any other bezel less phones it is very hard to use in day today life. but it looks good i admit it.
For me bezels is fine. i am still using my Xperia z3 duel,M4 aqua and also i haver my Sony Ericsson neo v. :). now i have iPhone 7 plus which is the mother of bezels.

Jeremy yes i gone through with s7 edge when xperia z3 went for display repire and i borrowed s7 edge from my friend.
I put my mac on my phone and it shattered. Lol
I use to play vertical games in it and i faced problems always.
The same issue will happen with the top and bottom bezels. Especially when we start playing horizontal games.
Bezel will help in watching videos or editing photos as well.
However it is my personal opinion. Please don't take my words as correct. Check in the s8 show rooms and try some games.may be that freaking things happen to some people and i am one of them.
There is high resolution audio speakers and big camera sensors behind the bezels so they serve a purpose.
Great video! That slow mo on the lighter is brilliant! Since you've uploaded this video they have apparently stated the reason why sony phones don't have the finger print sensor enabled in the US and that blame falls on Apple's lap as they patented it in the US a couple years back earlier in the year before Sony released the Z5 series that started their trend

I have had this phone for about 1 week now and it is truly a very very special phone. Pretty much the best phone on the market right now. There are office colleagues who have S8 and iPhone 7S plus and they all are blown away by the screen.

Actually 24mm is just a wider angle lens, like what the older Sony phones were using, like Z5 Compact, X Compact. 25mm is just a bit less wide that's all. I didn't notice a huge difference actually, but the wider the lens, the more distortion there will be, much like a fisheye camera. So perhaps Sony was trying to reduce that. :)

Great review of the Sony Xperia XZ premium. This device is lovely to hold and to look at. I used lots of Sony devices like the minidisc. Sony smartphones, the Z and the Z2. Now Im using the Microsoft Lumia 950 which is great too. 4k HDR screen is really one to have. Its really overkill for a smartphone but its sounds great to show of. Probably my next phone soon. Your review helps me ro get one. Thank you.

Currently using this phone, and I love it. A bit too much bloatware for my taste, but disabling the apps was pretty straightforward.

Great review. I would say the bezels help when playing games that rely on controls that are in the screen since they add distance from your palm to the actual screen controls. That’s a plus on my book. Great phone. Glad I got one.

There is one other thing I like about the XZP that you did not mention. It is the only phone I know of that displays LTE+ on towers that have downloaded at 219 Mbps.

Thx for another informative video, I have waited almost 2 years for the Xperia XZ Premium for the main reason of 4K + HDR display. Wished it came with more RAM, screen off always on for notifications & clock etc....removing SIM tray reboots phone is an excellent security feature though. Front firing stereo speakers could have been louder, another annoying thing is always having to go to settings for 4K video recording cause I'm used to presetting it. Having seens 4K+HDR display can never downgrade to lesser resolutions again, like the same as moving on to USB type C 3.1 no looking back.

+Zuhairi Jamal haha. The iphone 7 plus is a really good phone too actually. Unless you're tired of iOS or want the 960fps camera, it isn't that big of a change. Good performance on both, water resistance, good battery life, good screens. Speakers might actually be louder than the XZP. So it really depends on what you want.
Alex Hong Thanks for sharing your opinion. I'm somewhat tired but I know iOS have better Optimisation for the apps and also I always last longer on my iPhone rather when I was using android. I think what got me liking this phone is the screen and that Super slo-mo. My love for iphone have always been the Optimisation and camera
+Zuhairi Jamal No problem. You'll have to see if having the screen and slow motion camera is worth sacrificing what you like about iOS. SD835 on the XZ Premium does perform well, but like you said, I do find apps and games better optimised on iOS in general too. :/
iphone is no longer faster than android. especially compared to oneplus5 and xz premium are the two fastest phones on the market.

2:04 I still think the best position for the fingerprint is on the front, as you only need to register 2 thumbs. With the scanner on the side like on Sony phones, you need to register 3 fingers to cover all possible unlocking positions.
+Minh Pham Quite true. I think the ultimate goal in the near future is to have the fingerprint sensor beneath the screen so that the bezels can be thinner while having the fingerprint sensor in front.
But that said, the position at the side is actually pretty convenient too. And I prefer that more than having it on the rear of the phone. For me it's more like four fingers to cover right and left hand unlocking while the phone is in hand, or on a flat surface. Haha.

"4k an overkill?" No no no you just have to enable the magnification gesture on the XZP and then you can see how sharp 4k videos really are compared to 1080.

If you live in Australia, please do not choose this phone. I had this phone for only 2 months, my xz premium screen cracked while i had it in my pocket, i do not recall hitting into anything. Regardless, this phone is a nightmare to be repaired. To repair a sony phone in Australia or even if you have a faulty device, you would need to send it to the service centre via a courier, wait 1 week before they receive the device( DON'T BELIEVE THEIR PRIORITY SERVICE), wait for a quote, make a payment (does not matter if you send a copy of your receipt, you must wait a day or 2 until they receive the fund) wait for the money to go over, wait for them the repair (depending on the problem, could take up to 2 weeks) and finally wait for the courier to deliver the device back to your home.
TOTAL WAITING TIME : MINIMUM 2 WEEKS (WITHOUT ANY HICCUPS) AND UP TO A MONTH TO FIX A GOD DAM PHONE. TRUST ME THIS PHONE IS NOT WORTH IT.

The XZ Premium is great but just too big... so I'm waiting until this autumn for XZ1, which probably has all the XZP specs but a standard size.
I'm looking forward to the XZ1 Compact. haha. I prefer even smaller phones. lol.

Hmm. I think maybe the U11 has a slight edge. I prefer daylight shots from the U11 a tiny bit. In lowlight the image processing looks a bit more pleasing too. But both are decent though. :)

Double tap to wake up and sleep should be hidden in options. Look at Launcher settings and Screen settings :)
Thanks, but the feature was removed for this generation of Xperia though. Like the XZs lacks this feature as well whereas the XZ and X Compact had it. Hopefully they'll add in the feature again. Or maybe even something like "raise to wake" would be useful too. :)

better than the s8? you should do a display comparison between s8 and xz premium comparing the same pictures and videos to really see the difference between the two.
What about camera distortion? Screen bleeding on the top of the screen? White lines appear while playing movie on the left down side of the screen? Heating? All of this i read on XDA Forum and Xperia Blog
i did notice very minor distortion, but not common for wide angle lens, and a tiny bit of light bleed at the top, but really nothing serious, and doesn't affect the usage of the phone. The phone get a bit warm under heavy use, but same thing, nothing serious. It's cool most of the time. it's not like the Z5 series or SD810 chipset at all. At one time i stood under the sun for like 10-15mins with the screen brightness maxed out, trying to capture a dragonfly at 960fps. The camera didn't force shut, it got a bit warm, but that's it. I'm actually surprised it didn't get any warmer in those situations. I didn't see the white lines at all though. There's a chance that some of the users might have gotten a defective unit? Mine was fine though.

+Louie Fajardo hmm. In terms of the UI, speed, and performance, I think the XZ Premium has an edge. 960fps is fun, and stereo speakers are nice to have. But other than that, the S8+ is probably the slightly better overall package though. Nicer more futuristic design, better camera, and it’s packed with all the latest hardware like Iris scanning, heart rate monitor, wireless charging, etc.
Its nice to have the 960 fps....but is there any lower frame rate slow-mo video like 120 fps and 240 fps on this phone?
There is an option for 120fps as well. :)
In my country this sells with the same price as the S8+. That's a kind of a hard sell compared to what the competition is offering. Still a good phone tho'.
Yeah, very true. It'll be down to how much it costs where you live. Over here in Singapore it's actually cheaper than the S8 by a bit, making it a worth considering actually.
Sadden by the fact Sony Xperia XZ Premium don't support Dolby Vision HDR as well like LG G6 does, the significant diffences will probably not be apparent in a tiny display on smartphone but only for the sake of HDR10 & Dolby Vision content support.
For now there still isn't much HDR content though, especially in Singapore. I don't really see it becoming truly mainstream anytime soon though. But it's still good to have it for future proofing. :)

Can u confirm if your device is experiencing camera distortion? Lately, there is a massive consumer outrage of how this Xperia XZ Premium is unable to adequately capture pictures. ty.
If you pay close attention or when you're shooting things with a straight line across the scene, you can see a bit of distortion. That's quite normal for a wider angle lens, and i see something similar with the X Compact too. It's not a huge deal really, and in local forums where I live, no one seems too bothered about it. I don't find it a problem too.
Not sure about massive consumer outrage though, I've read the Sony forums and there are people who are affected by it, but I wouldn't consider that outrage though. It's not like they're catching fire spontaneously or anything like that. haha. Cheers!
Does it get hot quickly? Like high temperature from the back?
Because I'm using Z5 premium and it gets hot quickly once I open snapchat or watch a movie
+Jannah Shubbar it doesn't. SD835 is a lot better. It only gets a little hotter when using it under the sun and shooting photos. Playing graphically intensive games warms it up a little. But nothing huge. :)

No idea too. :( it was a very useful feature. Maybe they couldn't get it to work properly on the newer phones, so they just took it out. Hopefully they'll listen to customer feedback and add it back in again.

Does it have a good battery life?
It does actually. For my regular usage of web browsing, messaging, a bit of camera, games, youtube, reading forums, it lasts a day easily with around 5 hours of screen on time easily. I tried really pushing it using for gaming (dynasty warriors: unleashed) and a bit of camera and it lasted around 10 hours of use with over 7 hours of screen on time. It's a bit better than what I get on the smaller Galaxy S8, and LG G6.

Hazza Diesel it depends on a lot of factors too. Like cellular coverage, the amount of apps you have. But i do find it to have pretty decent battery life for its size. The SD835 chipset is rather efficient.

+Mauricio Lopez I don't have a other phones around though and it probably wouldn't translate well over speakers the actual volume. But I can say that they're not as loud as other phones with stereo speakers like moto x style, Nexus 6p, iphone 7 plus, but it's decent enough and the quality is good.

SD 835 GPU 540 can handle 4K gaming? Does it suffer from frame rate drop or reduce fps compare to 2k display like the S8 running on 8895. High intensive games like fps and racing.
There isn't any games that runs at 4K at this point in time as far as i know? I tested with real racing and dynasty warriors, and both runs well on both phones actually. It feels a bit faster on the XZ Premium I think, but it might be due to samsung's scaling to 18.5:9.
Alex Hong You are not wrong in saying games feels like it performs faster on Sony compared to Samsung. Sony phones is the best optimized phones in the Android world, I use Sony Z2 till this day to play Vainglory, and Sony Z2 is a 3 year old phone mind you and Vainglory is a graphic intense game, and Sony Z2 plays Vainglory as smooth as iPHONE 7+, which is supposedly one of most optimized phone currently and good for games. While I heard people said their devices(Samsung Galaxy and LG) lags with Vainglory. Can't wait to get this Sony XZ Premium soon to upgrade my 3 years old Sony Z2 phone.

May I know what is your average screen on time? I am trying to find a flagship with a good battery life so I was wondering if XZ premium will be a good choice
Average for me was around 5-6 hours or so over a day of use. Your mileage may vary though. It's slightly better than what I got from the S8 and G6, but not a huge difference. :)

+Jing Tiancheng it's doesnt yet. I was able to use the camera for long periods of time. Like even using the 960fps slow motion capture under the hot sun. It gets warm sometimes, but no where near the Z5P. 😂

Yup, love those guys. That portion is just showing watching 4K content on RUclips, the title was even shown in my video. Never said it was my video. The camera portion with actual slow motion footage from the XZP is a bit later. :)
Okay, lets be honest, if you were me, what would you buy? Sony XZP or Samsung S8+?

If it was me, I would buy neither, cause I prefer smaller phones. lol. Both has their own pros and cons actually. If you like taking videos, it's hard to beat the stabilisation and slow motion camera on the XZ Premium. But if you want a more stunning looking design, then S8+. Performance and software wise i would probably give the win to Sony. Hard to go wrong with either actually.

Used to be a Samsung fanboy, switched to LG V10 for the stunning design, only to encounter the dreaded bootloop issue after 15 months of usage. It's time for Sony... I hope I don't change my mind while in store and unconsciously pick the S8 😂

Camera comparison with S8
Unfortunately I don't have the S8 with me already though so i won't be able to make a video comparing the 2 directly. But if you ask me i'm going to say it's hard to pick a winner. Each has its own strengths. image quality wise both good, so it'll be down to personal preference of how the colour, sharpness are being processed. For me I'm happy with either, but I prefer the S8 slightly. Video quality wise i'll pick the XZ Premium. Steadyshot works great, the slow motion video is a huge bonus. Front camera wise XZ Premium is the clear winner for me. I know it's not much, but hope this helps.

I have both G6 and S8 plus, When I saw XZp in the Sony Store I tried every angle of the camera. S8 is top one, Sony is the second for picture quality but by using a camera as recording Sony is much better than the two. For wide angle taking picture G6 is the best. For entertainment like audio quality G6 can play high quality DSD512 as compared with sony. G6 sounds better in Beyerdynamics 1770 Pro 300 ohm. For watching movie, I prepared S8+ due to super amoled display and big screen as compared with Sony. I will buy XZp maybe next year if the price is lower because in PH Sony is one of the worse after sales service and Samsung is the lead. We just treat Sony phone as a disposable since going to repair center of Sony will make your phone worse. My M5 and Z5 premium are now not in a good conditions after the security updates.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, S8's camera is still hard to beat, but the XZP is not bad too. For video recording purposes the XZP will be my choice too. The Quad DAC in G6 probably will be better for audio quality. The Sony is priced a bit high in most countries unfortunately. If priced properly it would be an awesome phone. I'm just hoping that Sony will improve on their phone design though. I don't think they can keep this design much longer. :/

The reason why the fingerprint sensor is disabled in the US is because of a pantent issue... basically SONY needs to pay a fee to use it as a comoanh already has rights to that technology

Some said that it could be because they had some agreement with some carrier for an exclusive for the fingerprint sensor, so they can't enable it on their unlocked devices. We'll never know unless they come clean. But well, it's still a major downside since fingerprint sensor is now almost like a must-have feature for all smartphones. Hopefully they'll work it out. :)
