People complain about the bezels but they don't complain about the bad performance, lags, pink screens, battery life, durability in drops, and many others about their smartphones. How funny....

"Business decision" = Don't want to pay royalties to what ever company made us sign an agreement.
they dont really care in international industry for their flagship phones because international users are considered too naive, sony even releases low to mid end products for international only.
Basically, in Japan majority of people don't use cheap smartphones.
They and me as well don't think the bezel-less design is a necessity. people who commented like "ah sony lives in the past", they don't know who Sony really is.

Ihsan Husandi Really, the C5? If we're talking about near-bezelles designs at the time it's LG's G2 and G3 or, more notably, Sharp's Aquos. Also from my experience with the S8, using a 5.8 inch screen device with a footprint of a 5 incher, is far from 'disturbing' and more of convenience of being able to operate such a large screen with one hand.

Maybe its because i prefer sony products and how well designed sony products are or maybe its because this phone is diff from the rest and isnt on the bezel -less bandwagon like.. Everyone else. I just find it far more appealing that other android phones.

me too, thinking about switching from my iphone 6.
I have a 6s Plus. I waited to see what Apple was going to come out with on the 8 and the X. Apple never changes their product. Same OS and the content on the phone (the way it looks etc) never changes. It got boring. If Apple gave their consumers more customizations for their phones, and maybe a whole new look for the OS... I would have stayed. They get rid of a home button and add wireless charging and they want about $1,000. It's ridiculous.
I am currently saving to get this phone.I knew someone who had a former Xperia phone. The look and feel of it shocked me. It had a pretty premium feel to it. It made me look at my iPhone in a different light. And to be able to play my PS4 games on it... major win. I'm finally saying goodbye to iOs.
Enjoyed this review. As an iPhone user I wouldn't mind the bezels. Nice to see Sony using a really light skin. I'm in EU so I would consider it
Tim! Actually the resolution is scaled to 1080p for normal tasks and 4k activates only for 4k content!
just to save battery etc because who wants so send message in 4k? you dont notice any diffrence
Masterprima I know, I actually appreciate that they have done that! I just wanted him to know, as he does not state that in the video...in fact, he thinks that the whole phone is constantly sclaed to 4k.
Dongkyu Lee Actually on the XZ premium it's 4k all the time, except when gaming. The feature you're talking about was only on the Z5 Premium.
Mr.Toot Nope, it is not. It is rendered in 1080p and uses 4k only when gaming and such. Look up Damir Francs video about the XZ Premium. You can enable 4k all the time by adb commands but out of the box, it does not.
i still have a z5 and i have 0 problems with it

The phone does actually have a finger print scanner but it's disabled for the US market. You can flash over the international ROM and the sensor will work just fine then. From what I've read Sony basically had to either ship a phone with this feature disabled or exit the US market all together because of some lawsuit.
José Bolaños No you don't. You only lose the warranty if you flash a custom ROM, but since its an official OEM ROM it doesn't void the warranty.
the fingerprint sensor IS there. just flash an international ROM.

The UI doesn't run as 4k, it runs as 1080p. It turns on 4k when there's actually 4k content going on.
He does not know it. Quite pitifully for a so called tec reviewer.
And you don't know that you can actually run 4k always...
Merivu nope, this was the case with the Z5 Premium, but this one runs 4K 100% of the time.
more surprised he didn't know the fingerprint sensor is present and just disabled, seeing as he spoke to so many people about it. that fingerprint sensor placement is the reason for those side bezels as well.
Jasper Pauwels It's not in 4k all the time by default... but it can run 4k all the time. Just have to configure two lines on adb

For the love of God, please get it off of 'Super-vivid Mode'... The colors are the truest of any display. Not using it on 'Professional Mode' or sRGB is a crime. For even better sound, enable the ClearAudio+ feature in settings. And to use the fingerprint sensor, flash the UK or International firmware.

Tim, you can enable fingerprint scanner on US models by flashing international firmware.
And there is a option to enable double tap to wake feature in Display Settings.

Business decision should read, there are patents we don't have there and we are not willing to pay the royalties. It is the only reason. There must be someone with a patent in the US and they are charging Sony more than what they deem acceptable, so they just didn't ship with the feature, otherwise it would eat their margins, that's the business reason. Though, I don't know if you know, you can flash an official European ROM, you won't lose warranty and the fingerprint scanner will work.
First of all, Fingerprint scanner is there. I mean the hardware is there but it is just disabled through software. You can enable it by flashing the rom on Sony's UK firmware. It's not really a hard thing to do and you don't have to root your device or anything...
Second, the display resolution is 4K, but it will only activate when it detects some 4K content. Otherwise, it's running in 1080p.

I've switched from an iPhone 4S to the xperia Z3, then the Z5 and now just bought the XZ Premium here in Canada. I love their products. Although, honestly the Z5 died on me... the board just got busted one night... Oh well, I don't blame Sony, they still make great phones... all tech can break.

The fingerprint sensor works like a charm (using an Asian market set). A really poor business decision. The placement is really intuitive to unlock using either the thumb or index finger. Thanks for this review.

The business decision most likely includes a deal to acquire better fingerprint scanning technology from an company with the caveat that they cannot compete with said company by agreeing to exclude the borrowed tech in the United States.
So Sony gains the fingerprint scanning technology it was missing in their flagships, and can provide a better handset worldwide with the exception of the tech providers Target market (the US).

4K makes a crazy difference even in that size, of course it deos depends but for me it deos, looks much better than even QHD, but it will be always more enjoyable to have watch it on a 4k tv because the size.

FYI, Sony always puts the NFC logo where the NFC sensor is under the glass so you know exactly where to tap it against.
huh, I've always swiped left to right to get rid of notifications on my sony devices, didn't even know it was the other way around in other devices, interesting thing to point out

Ive never minded Sony's design i think its conservative yet kinda elegant
Some "double tap to sleep" apps on Play Store are flop. They make a LCD screen look black in very low brightness but you can still see some glow when you tilt the screen. Hence, battery drain.

What does "Premium feeling" mean? Is it the weight, texture, size...?
Phone meant for a certain few....if they listen to the feedbacks, they could surely make one for the masses and score a home run
as multiple people have said you can fix the fingerprint issue, its a bummer that you buy a 800dollar phone and you need to modify it and void the warranty but it only takes 5 minutes and does not break anything. do not do the 4k mod on it as many apps will not work, thats why its native res is 1080 and not 4k, many apps cant handle 4k plus gpu needs to work extra to upscale to 4k which means bad battery life. also who needs 4k to look at icons in home page? I love the HDR on it, looks amazing, I cant wait till they come up with a oled screen 4k HDR phone. their oled TV looks pornographic, same tech on phone would shatter the boundaries of space-time
Double tap to wake should be under display settings. Ive enabled it on my xperia x
it lags horribly when you use it in sunlight 113F+ with data turned on! Its near pixel smooth otherwise in normal weather conditions
You can change screen resolution by using ADB.

My guess is Sony did not include the fingerprint scanner in US model to not be forced to provide this data to the US government.
Everyone else going bezel-less is causing that design to become somewhat generic. The XZP's bezels have a certain old world charm much like those classic cars with projecting door handles and huge wheel arches

My phone has large bezels and I used to ignore them, and this is coming from someone who have tried the S8 twins already.
Xz premium is amazing, but the new model is coming in few months :) xperia Ultra wide.... It's going to be dupersized small bezels phone :)
I had a Z3 Compoact, after that I'd never go with sony again, in the space of a year the headphone jack stopped working, the phone died when being dropped in water by accident, and then they didn't update it to Nougat (may have not been their fault).
Looking at this now, it's definitely ahead of it's time. Pixel3 comparatively ain't that great. Now that iPhone is deviating away from it's design principles, this phone is the next best.
