sony phones are never loud because culturally it is very rude to have loud speakers almost anywhere in Japan. Even at home you're not supposed to make too much noise because japan houses have really thin walls. other examples include capsule hotels which usually don't even have a door and alarms are meant to be plugged into your ears.

definitely. a lot of that has to do with the lack of recognition in the USA. its well known around europe and asia but in the US its a dead company/phone. well not company cuz ps4.
but usa is the decided of popular culture around the world. whats popular in america everyone follows it just needs to become popular.
But even in Asia and Europe Sony is behind in sale and brand recognition.

Sony has the most comfortable fingerprint scanner placement. Period. Using last year's XZ and loving it!
Kaushik srinivas US version doesn't have a fingerprint scanner.
I'm aware of it. I live in India and Sony's sales are embarrassing here. I love Sony but one has to agree that there are better phones at lower prices.
the US version has the hardware for the fingerprint sensor. it's very simple to flash firmware from a different region to enable the feature (I have last year's XZ).
No one will buy sony phone in the US, so it doesnt matter if it has or not.

How come no one mentions the solid reliability Sony offers? A Sony phone will easily outlast any Samsung or LG device.
I had Sony Xperia Z3 for FOUR years, it performed fantasticly. We'll se how far will XZP go.
This kind of design is timeless, it's like something Dieter Rams might have designed for Braun. Good design is as little design as possible. If you think it's outdated then you have a fast fashion mindset and you're going to be constantly changing to keep up with the trends because you're never satisfied when something new comes out.
I have had this phone for over a week and you are dead wrong. It is the most stunning phone I have ever owned. I have owned many different brands and I considered all the other mainstream phones. Nothing comes close to this when it comes to fit, finish, quality, build refinement screen resolution especially in super vivid mode as well as the camera, which in direct tests has proven to be much more superior to that of the S8 and G7.

The camera has some great aspects to it, however they still have the noise/sharpening niggles, though they are less than before. There's also the camera distortion issue, which could be fixed with software.

I think the speakers are pretty loud to be honest. There was a software update a while ago which enhanced the loudness of the speakers, and yep, they surely are a lot louder!
I still REALLY want this device. It's just the most complete right now for me!

I have both the xzp and galaxy s8 to be honest I use the xzp as my daily phone as the s8 is more like a play phone for things like games or whatever. The xzp has a much better camera as it takes natural photos and not super saturated over done pics like the s8

The best midranger I used ever is Xperia SP. The best flagship phone is XPERIA Z3 and currently using it. My first smart phone is Xperia ray and it was a beast too back then. Xperia ray is still working despite it is 6 years old. Xperia SP has a dead battery after 4 years. I have never seen so much durability among other phones. Yeah cam design and sound may not be better. But SONY mobile always fair at pricing. always worth for money. cheaper than S8 and Iphone 7. So when we get the lower price as a feature, sony wins!!

Did You change the sound settings? It is set for headphones, if You change to studio it has a more boost and in EQ You can boost the Clear bass setting. I only take pictures in manual and I've set the double click power button to start the camera (the shutter button isn't fast to get to whilst holding in one hand. The charger is in 3.0 because the phone has Stamina mode, and the battery is Qnovo battery, it will keep Your phone with a decent battery life for longer. And as to dropping, of course You can smash the screen but it's no that easy to do, I've used Sony (prior Sony Ericsson) phones for a decade, i've had also other phones, but Sony is tougher and I've dropped mine on many occasions and it is without a dent.

Raiyan Khan Angshu mine is solid, not skipped a beat in the past week since I got it.
I'm watching this right now on my XZ premium and I have to say the speakers are great. Not sure if you got a dud but mine is very loud and clear, much more so than my gf's iPhone
+bloobat very weird. This has been a Sony problem very since the very beginning. It hasn't changed. Something even like the U11 blows this away.

I'd suggest black, I originally wanted the chrome but decided against it in the end as imo it's too flashy and distracting but at the end of the day it's personal preference!
there is a way to fix the not very loud speakers
1.install a custom recovery flash magisk and viper4androidfx
2. try using sonys xLOUD
3.try a few different custom roms and mods
Keep going in the same way Sony,your design and camera is awesome. Sony phones are unique design..they don't copy other brands.. "Sony xperia rocks"
You have seen better as you say? while I agree the Ois makes the s8 better at crops in low light and in shadow details but that's where it stops. The Sony has better dynamic range front and rear facing camera, better contrast as well and better stabilisation for video front and rear facing camera. No need delving into the super slow motion 960fps which the S8 doesn't have. You should always state the positives and negatives of each phone, don't make it seem the Sony only has negatives and doesn't beat the s8 in any category. That makes u seem very biased as an analyst or RUclips blogger. I have seen both camera phones in various tests and I can say they both have advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other. I accept if low light stills is paramount then you are better off with the s8. But if video stabilisation and quality is paramount you are better off with the XZ premium. Then in day light the Sony has better contrast and slightly better dynamic range this I have seen myself front and rear facing camera. The front facing shows a clearer gap especially. The Sony as well shows colours more naturally compared to the S8, these are all things you failed to point out. You need to realise a lot of your viewers aren't novices and check out a lot of stuff themselves. A novice listening to this will be misguided to think the S8 is the far better option. You need to find a right balance so you never come out looking biased.
You should see more reviews in other channels. Sony's camera is meh according to multiple reviews. I guess u missed it for being biased towards an inferior product

Dont know how this guy use the camera, but its maybe the only review that says the Camera is just good. Others says its as good at the competition, at last. I do agree with loudspeaker volume though. It could be louder, but as someone said, its because those should get fried.
He also said somewhere, that this phone still gets hot?? Wich is the only reviewer who says, so far. Other reviews I seen says that this mobile never really gets hot. And talks that they really tried to get games or camera to shut down, and never succeded.
In a sense I dont think he is bias, like he wants to be bias. But He just loves Oled screens and bezels less phone so he chooses Samsung anyway, despite Xperia XZ Premium is the better phone for once.
Camera just good, my ass... lol. I kinda laughed when I heard that. And laughed even more when he said camera aint that great. I was flabbergasted. But ok. Its his review, he has the right to have it views. I just thinks its not the real deal.
If he knew that Sony for once actually has a reason for this design. 1, to moce the camera from the hotter places from the phone, wich means no heating issues and camera shutdowns. 2 The phone is cooler thanks to it. And 3 YOu can actually hold the phone.

I am also a big Sony fan and have been their vivid supporter for the past 20 years and all my phones have been Sony. Except some mistakes I made buying a couple of times other brands just for kicks.
I will always return to Sony and my present phone is the one in the video. 😇

Kudos! Great review, I guess I'm old school but for me Xperia XZ Premium the king of aesthetics. Sorry to say but a little tired of minimal bezelless designs like all other flagship phones in the market today "boring", Sony stands for quality & premium built. It's just different & stands out in the crowd, like Blackberry with physical keyboards it looks unique. I have to agree with you & share your disappointment with the insufficient sounding front firing speakers, HTC was the best in this department though. Other improvements I would like to have is QC 4.0 charging, FM radio, settings for screen resolutions, pre-set for 4K recording & last but not least 6GB RAM or more might be nice, cheers.

After owning Sony Androids since the beginning, most recent one being the Z2, and currently 'upgrading' to an LG G6, I have come to appreciate the excellent work that Sony does on it's software side. Their software is solid, and works well for the life of the phone. My 3year old Z2 performs better than a friend's Galaxy of the same generation which is slow and laggy as shhht, and has less bugs and annoyances than my current G6.
Sony's hardware and design team really need to step up their game, if the G6 was blessed with Sony's firmware, it would be the perfect phone.
As soon as Sony release a phone with the same screen size (or slightly bigger) and form factor of the G6, I'll be jumping back onto the Sony ship.
It's a little sad, they were onto something with the Xperia ZL but they just totally wend the other way with their designs.
I think overall this review is fair. The reviewer was not overly enthusiastic about Sony nor was he overly critical of Sony either. He mentioned the useful good aspects of the phone and also its shortcomings and personally having used a Sony phone before (and using one now) I have to agree with some of the things he said. I guess it's only natural to compare the current flagship to the Galaxy S8/S8+ since they are the most similar products out in the market right now i.e. Snapdragon 835. I just wanna say thank you for giving an honest review and helping me understand this phone a little better :)
One thing reviewers keep ignoring or just aren't aware of is the great Active Noise Cancelation built into the cell phone (and other Xperia’s). I had it with my Xperia Z3; if you buy the headphones that have the 5 contact jack that are dedicated to the built in ANC software, and you use the correct in-ear tips for a good fit, it produces truly great noise reduction and on a fight make cabin sound very bearable. Today we’re seeing the 3/8's plug disappearing from newer Xperia phones, along with many other manufacturers’, phones because you can connect by NFC to your phone and listen via Bluetooth. I do have the Sony WH-1000XM3 and life on a plane couldn’t be any more quiet and low stress. But what if you want to travel light, which sometimes I do, and you only want to have in ear headphones you can stick in your shirt pocket (if your shirt has one, that’s disappearing too!). I have tried many “true wireless Bluetooth ear buds”, but haven’t found a pair that fit as well as and have the sound quality of, or have “0” latency issues as a pair of Sony MDR-NC31EM because they plug into the phone! The XZ Premium does still have a 3/8’s and it’s a 5 contact plug for the dedicated ANC system. Considering a manufacture has to make some compromises to get a product out and be within a price point and have all the features you want to incorporate, I think the XZ premium does a great job.
You might wanna change the way you do your sound test. You should have let us listened to the Sony again after letting us hear the iPhone because I totally forgot how teeny the Sony sounded unless I rewinded back to the Sony part again, not the best thing to do on mobile. But nice video anyways :)

I am no using XZ Premium but I own my XZs, and from what I can tell my lovely XZs has truly amazing performances yet an unbelievably stunning build quality. Metal and aluminum body, pretty good camera, crisp and beautiful display. And I bet Sony did a great job by improving their product with this one Premium series.
you have a good point with the low speaker volume but not a deal breaker about the wireless charging. i rather have the regular plug anyways.

I noticed the phone speakers on shop display phone was low. You can ignore the bezels if the speakers are good. Did surprise me about camera opinion thou
Good review! I personally think wireless charging is a gimmick and we are picking hairs when comparing mobile devices alot of people stay with or swap smart phones based on the OS. I'm someone that's gone from a Xepria Z3 for 2 years to this XZ Premium and after 3 months first time with anytype of finger print scanning and it works a charm
Holy crap this is the most honest XZ premium review I've seen. I have the Z3 and I gotta admit the problems you've pointed out have been there for almost all generations of xperia phones since the original Z. I've been an ardent fan of Sony and was waiting for the xz premium to launch but was disappointed that sony didnt correct their mistakes. Will do a bit more research before replacing my Z3 :(
Best phone on the market hands down. I have been using Xperia since the Z. Never going to switch. This phone kills s8 s8 plus and note 8. Check out real reviews. This is a Samsung channel.
Every review I saw said that xZ camera's were inferior. and the design is meh which even I can see this. What are you smoking? :/ If u don't want to switch to a better device with an excuse of lag but then leave out 10+ better features, then go on. Everyone has personal opinion
MOGA DESHU not the reviews I have seen. Just look around on youtube. Plenty of vids its the other way around. Samsung uses Sony's last gen image sensor. As does Apple. To my eyes I like the camera on the xzp way more.

Hmm earbuds were not included in my unboxing. I guess I will be having a conversation with best buy this week. Good review. I found myself agreeing on all points. But no matter how good or bad you think this phone is - it is the best looking phone available today. It is gorgeous!
One more thing. I was under the impression the finger print sensor would not work in THE US.
I always Love Sony, the smart phone for use.

I haven't received the phone yet. But I'm excited to to have features like LDAC since i just got a couple Sony XB40 Bluetooth Speakers and the Sony 1000x Headphones. Love the idea of having above average to high quality wireless sound.

I took the S8 back and got the xzp. Here's an honest view of it coming from an X apple sheep. The xzp is a way better choice in every way possible. Here's something people with the S8 won't tell you. When the screen is at full brightness you can literally cook eggs on it that was the main reason I took it back. Also the brightness kept on jumping up and down on its own under the same lighting condition don't know maybe that was just my phone but it was annoying lol
The last Sony Xperia C5 I used disappointed me; too hot, the front camera stopped working within a short time, a lot problems, so how is this one???
good review Danny , not having the best of the best of the best of camera's is not a total deal breaker as long as it's reasonable and if the rest of the device is good , but the low speaker volume has a big effect on viewing content , that is a major disappointment IMO , I guess you could use the cans , but you don't always have them with you.
if you had a choice ...... S8/S8 plus or HTC u 11 what would you pick ????
dude I'm using z5 premium and the sound is thesame,not as loud as other android phones. the reason is its a WATERPROOF phone that interferes loud music
volume output is a software limitation. sony has more power than iphone for sound they just software limit it. the iphone 7 was louder but the quality wasnt there it was distorted and tiny.
It looks like it hasn't been perfected yet which makes me want to wait before getting it. I mean if your making it that big because of the speakers that have weak sound production, might as well u get rid of it and make it much more handle able. I mean that screen and the camera are the only reasons I'd get it. Please Sony, I know your really good with sound systems so perfect so I can buy it from you.
How about predictive capture mode ? Is it work as they advertised ?
Yes it works great actually. You can't control when it happens unfortunately and can cause some delay in the software but it works well. I am going to do a separate camera video.

the volume has always been a problem on all xperias . Not sure why it's not fixed yet. even single speaker phones are loud than the dual speaker set up Sony has implemented .
Any chance of trying to do the low light images in Manual with a tripod?
If it wasn't for the lack of OIS, the image quality would be a total groundbreaker.
But thanks for the tip, just so I can confirm that this phone is still my choice 'cause I don't take low light photos in those kind of situations.
The problem is not only the OIS. Its the software processing of the images. Low light on a tripod doesn't help the fact that on point and shoot situations the camera is not good in low light. If you want to take a quick picture in the moment you don't have time to put it on manual mode, dig to change the ISO and get a tripod. You know what I am saying?
Danny Winget I know what you're saying, but what I'm saying is to see the full potential of the camera in low light. I know it is very inconvenient but just because for that, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done at all.
I just wanted to see clearly if it makes any difference when it's mounted properly on low light camera shooting setup.
I also do some fun photography on my smartphone in low light and get good-looking photos when using Manual Mode settings.
sony actually uses sensor shift on top of EIS. its actually sony's own way of doing both and having an alternative to OIS.
btw the poor quality in low light is due to the higher ISO in auto. manual is a different story entirely. Sony xz premium is way more future proof it has the worlds best hardware it could make/improve all these things better with an update and boom its the best phone in the world. not to mention the color sensor too. lots of new technologies that need further optimization.
I'm happy I bought htc u11 over this one... Sound and camera are awesome, much better than s8 plus that previously I owned xx

Very good review Danny, and like other reviewers have said, it appears that the SONY XZ premium does an "OK" job in low light ,and I can't understand why so many people are putting this phone down so badly, everybody seems to be in favor of the S8 when it comes to low light performance, I agree it does a good job too, but let's hope SONY releases a software update soon to fix those issues, but one also has to ask, is the night scene taken with the S8 is really that bright as shown in all the reviews or it would be more natural by looking at it with our naked eye in real life? I believe the S8 or any other smartphone would really be a "WOW FACTOR" if they had an f/1.4, but none of them has it right now? and I doubt if any smartphone will ever have one either, and honestly feel that the "low light" shot results among all the top 2017 smartphones are fairly close to each other,Come on SONY wave your magic wand, if you can make good sensors for all your mirrorless a7 , a9 and all NIKON cameras,I am sure you can fix the XZ premium and make all the SONY fan boys happy
Totally agree with you, that Sony should fix their stupid camera processing issues... Apple, using the same Sony sensors gets better, more natural results - go figure...
But you also missed even mentioning my favorite feature and main reason to buy Sony phones: built-in noise cancellation with Sony's headphones. This works so well, sitting in air planes becomes a completely quiet experience. I even grab my phone if I need to use a circular saw or angle grinder - pop in the headphones and its nice and quiet, avoiding hearing damage from loud power tools...
really that kind of earphone which came with old sony ericsson device like XPERIA MINI PRO?

Danny Winget cool. Also can you please in your full review touch on the regular slow motion capabilities of the XZ Premium? They get completely overlooked because of the insane 960fps slow motion but I've heard that it can shoot 240fps at 1080p. Is that accurate?
I had been considering the XZ Premium as my next phone, but had some concerns based upon snippets I had read. Thanks for the thorough review. Dual, front-facing speakers are important to me (currently Axon 7 user) and I was disappointed in the sound of the XZ. I will wait to see if Sony can fix the issue with a software update.
Waiting to see what the Oneplus 5 is like but I think this will be my next phone

just got the phone, ur points are valid, it's "nice and all", just not great ... i mainly focus on the photo/video usage, and this phone isn't giving quality results the way it's marketed to be. low light is quite bad
+pettypoh low light you need to use Manual mode. You have to force it into a lower ISO and the results are dramatically different. Most people don't want to do this though and Sony could make their intelligent Auto so much better. Most people just want to point and shoot with the best results. This is what I am disappointed in.
thanks, yeah for a smartphone usage, i'd really rather just point and shoot rather than have to tinker with settings. btw, did you notice the 960fps is cropped in further than 120fps? does that mean it's actually not 720p but an even lower resolution which Sony then upscaled?
Pretty good review. I really dont mind the lack of wireless charging. It tend to eat batteries for breakfast, so even if it did have it, I'd never use it. My biggest problem with this phone is that I just dont like how big it is. I generally think the standard flagships are too big, but this is a monster. So I will likely not buy it, unless we get a Compact version (and I sincerely doubt that).
+Calle Nilsson yeah the compact versions are nice but they are always gimped with a 720p display or something. They do need a better design and I think that is coming IFA.

Just last week I was at the mall comparing pictures from my s8 and xz premium at display... my s8 camera looked like a vga one in front of sony... seriously after seeing that I decided to sell my s8 n get xz even in 2018 with those bezels... coz I somehow like the wider display ratio of 16:8... it makes typing so much better and videos look great too.. Please don't lie about the camera... s8 really doesn't have that great camera when compared to xz premium or pixel 2 xl...

Samsung clearly payed this guy to promote the s8 vs the xz premium. LOL The xz is faster, better display, better camera, and has stereo sound instead of the unpleasent mono speaker. Don't be silly and watch more reviews, because this is the only guy who's gonna dare to say the SONY imx 320 sensor of the s8 is better than the imx400 the xz premium has... HAHAHAHA
+jordi terrats molina Sensor doesn't mean shit if the processing is bad. Samsung Paid me so much I paid $800 of my own money to personally own this phone. When has a Sony Phone ever been the best phone of the year? NEVER. I like this phone. I said I did. Just disappointed because it did NOT meet expectations. Do you have one? Do you have the S8? If you have both of them and have used them both extensively then let me know.

Let me answer:
Man, something is going on here when you're the only RUclipsr talking shit about the phone, while anyone else is saying it is a beast that outperforms the s8 in most categories.
1-Image processing (hopefully you know what it is) has been a problem with the old Sony flagship, this one works amazingly, try to find a single photo with a bad image processing... There is none.
2-There is not such a thing as a universal phone of the year, each site says what it wants/what they are payed to say. Anyway, there's a label on top of the box (at least in my country's version) that is statementing GSMA: "best new phone of 2017" Sony flagships have always received lots of rewards.
3-Even if I didn't have the phone, I can judge by watching raw samples in my true colour 4k display, I am an architect and I know perfectly how to analyse images (especially those taken with pro cameras rather than smartphones, it's pretty similar, though), as far as I've seen the xzp is now (6-10-2017) the best camera on a smartphone. I saw the display on the mwc of Barcelona. L'hospitalet (my town) I'll get the phone though, don't worry xD.

lol hey jordi, do you know supersaf channel, if not search it on youtube, he just did a camera comparison between the xzp and the s8, in which the S8 killed the xzp in almost all situations! I'm not even a Danny's subscriber, but this is a fair review. Danny praises the xzp wherever it deserves, at the same time gives reasonable critique with evidence: quiet ffs, thick as bezels, good but not great camera.
P/S: I'm an HTC user, so no bias here, just stating facts :)

Have had my eye on these for a while and got one last weekend.
So far, I love it. Having come from an HTC One M8 (May it rest in peace!), I'm hooked on front facing speakers. I don't know if it's just the model you have, but I find mine are very loud. To the point it is actually a bit distorted at max volume.
I was a bit concerned about the bezel size, but it allows me to put my thumbs over them, giving me a greater reassurance that I won't drop it.
I think the camera button is great and very quick to open the app from screen off, but I find myself accidentally pressing it when I grab the phone. Mostly just an adjustment process for me though. Much like going from a phone with a top power button to a phone with a side power button.
Love the screen though, and 4k video dumbfounds me. I can't make out pixels on a 1080 phone screen. How am I managing to see all the extra detail when I switch to 4k?!?! Haha.
The thing is slippery as hell though. I sat it on my laptop lid at work, a minute later I heard a thud as it fell off! The lid of my laptop is that rubbery plastic on a near impercievable slope. I put it back on and watched as it slowly slid down it!
Hi Danny, does wifi calling work with your xz premium on tmobile? I really like this phone but i was under the impression that a lot of features wouldnt work on tmobile (wifi calling, VoLTE, some bands, and the fingerprint scanner).

I'd have to agree. the volume does sucks on Sony even tho it's front facing speakers.
