Happy I'm Not Doing That Anymore!

- There are so many different jobs on a farm, and our morning commute is measured in steps not miles. When I see the cars go by our house, I'm so happy I'm not doing that anymore! Today is a collection of small jobs: doing the chores, cleaning out the pigs pens, moving the Dexter cattle to new pasture, and packing for farmers market. Among them, I give a detailed explanation of how we set up temporary fences for strip grazing the cattle and talk about the importance of leaving trampled grass in the pasture vs. methods such as "zero grazing." I also spend some time while packing for market telling the story of how I got my first job in architecture. And I'm happy I'm not doing that anymore too!
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

i'm 63 years old, and i still don't know what i'm going to do, so i'll watch some cows and chickens on the internet for a while...lol
Same. Except I am 56.
52 here and pretty much addicted.
I've done some work with temp agencies, and do a bit of volunteering. After a long career, retired, and still relatively fit, I think the different temp jobs give me insight into things I didn't even know existed. Plus, being paid minimal wage and temporary work (one or 2 days a week, sometimes more, sometimes vacation), it makes each job fun, some more than others, but still, great experiences. Also, I've met good, non-professional people who are smarter than me and are making it, many doing very well. Some kids who don't know what to do, no clue as to even how to get a clue. I like to think I've helped a few of them, just telling them what I went through. You never know how you impact other people, hopefully in positive, encouraging ways. People did that for me, too.
I did 21 years In the army. And retired. I now make a living doing the things I like to do. I am a home inspector , I fix small engines I sharpen knives, I also run a handyman business. I get a military retirement pension as well as VA disability
Thankyou for your service. How wonderful that you are now doing the things you enjoy!
Thank you for your service!
I am 63 years young and i think very few people know what the heck they want to do when their 30 years old. Life changes and and we change as we get older.
Boy! The drone view definitely shows what's been grazed and what hasn't.
Always look forward to drone shots.
Yeah I thought it was really cool, actually.
your grazing methods are utilized by many and the results are beneficial indeed.
I recall after graduating from GA Tech with a bachelors degree in physics I tried unsuccessfully to find employment in my field. I eventually took a job doing bindery work in a printing business. I learned this skill while working part time at my Dad's printing company. Eventually I made enough money to return to graduate school and complete my education in that field. I worked 34 years in the government as a research scientist until retiring to the mountains of Virginia. I too am happy that I'm not doing that anymore.
It’s so nice to hear from Hillary in this episode! We are so impressed with the hard work she does, and we hope hear more of her thoughts in the future.
It was nice having Hillary talk to us a bit; more would be good.
Maybe she does want too don’t force no one too what they don’t
I’m a young man still trying to figure life out and I really enjoy the life lessons and just everything that you pass down. Thanks for making videos that give inspiration to average people like me who work and push through every day life….
If it Flies, Floats or Fornicates. Rent it
AT 7 years old 1956 on Easter Sunday just before lunch in the UK, listening to AFN Europe /BFN and hearing about all those exotic places , i knew that day that my future was in the military, , I enlisted at age of 16 years and spent the next 20 in Germany , Holland the UK France, Belgium Denmark and the US as well as Canada at Suffield the brit army tank range in Canada, never looked back and had a whale of a time, stood me in good stead, still working at 73 as a commercial paint sprayer and love it
Love having a big hearty breakfast after a couple of hours of hard work in the morning. Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dinner like a peasant. Healthy way to live!
Pete, you are making such good use of that drone! The aerial footage of moving the fence is top-notch stuff.
Pete, the Drone shots remind me of the Eames powers of 10!
A farmer in Virginia? had a circus wagonwheeled type chicken coop, which he moved along with the cows progress through the pasture. The ciw pies attracted bugs, which the chickens consumes as a good protein source. So, as pasture height declined from cows, he moved cows and cart around. You know i believe at the beginning there was a chicken preening itself quickly, because of the camera? I certainly glad that you and the wife are educating us with necessary routine and principles like you taught us while you were in pasture. Ie. left behind grass for soil health, and natural instincts in cows ie. grazing. This is not only a field trip for me, but a educational class in ergonomics, and livestock farming, just as if i were attending a field course school. its great and thanks😁🖐
This is exactly what my wife and I tell the grandkids now, take any job you can get. Take care of this job to protect your resume. This job need not be your career. At the end of high school, seeing as we were barbers we encourage them to be a barber it need not be your career, but did you ever know an unemployed barber, two every day you will have cash in your pocket at the end of the day as well as the end of the week. Plus you can be flexable enough to make tome for other studies. The biggest benefit was you need not like the customer because you only saw them for twenty minutes and listening to the stories of the whole shop you will get the broadest education ever imagined, and in the right shop we had the most fun fun fun.
When we were raising pigs, we made a back scratcher by attaching a used push broom to a piece of conduit pipe horizontally and suspended it over the stalls at back height.
30 years a custodian, retired in 2014.live in a city,7 raised garden beds.lots of humming bird feeders out.make turkey calls and sew bucket hats for bowhunters.grew up on a farm.your growing quality food there.grew up doing that.
Really appreciated the story at the end. I'm mid-40s and seriously questioning if I want to keep doing my career.
Seems to me if you're out of debt, house paid off (if you have one) and have a decent 401K or IRA, you're free to choose.
I don't even start and I just want this life :'( but I need start so I can buy a land and house and equipments 😭😭😭😭😭
Thats me as well. But um a little scared
The drone shots looked really cool!
I'm 60 and I think I'm gonna be a cowboy. My wife is sceptical. Pasture looks great. I know the rain makes a mess but I'm hearing that some are feeding hay.
Good plan! Give your wife a view of what the cowboy you might look like. Chaps, hat and boots. Might work.😊
Pete and Hil(l?)ary. So grateful to have found your channel recently. Your disposition, knowledge, and eagerness to share is invigorating. This is my preferred kind of "reality tv".
Enjoyed the story, similar situation here. I work full time as an hvac technician and though I earn a great living and am able to support my family, i find most days my heart just isn’t in it as much as it used to be. So this week my wife and I put an offer in on a small farm a few towns over where we will be offering affordable horse boarding and training so people in our tax bracket can afford to enjoy and love these animals like we do. Thank you and please keep up the great content
I loved to hear Hillary describing the work. You two are a great team
Pete when you let the chickens out it looked like a jailbreak !!!!!!!!!!!!!
That overhead shot with the drone showing the fence move to fresh grazing for the cows...nicely done!
Enjoyed the aerial view of you and Hillary moving the fence.
I was on 81 somewhere north of Syracuse during that blizzard - on my way to Bradford, PA from Montreal. I won't soon forget that trip.
Hey!! Im an Architect currently that also has a small hobby farm on our little homestead in Texas. Not anything to your scale but slowly trying to build it to be as self sufficient as possible. Love the videos and i learn a lot from watching. Thanks for make them and pushing content out so often
These videos are so nice to watch!
It is a beautiful noise listening to cattle munch on grass but alot of city folk don't understand, for myself it's the smell of the farm that I'll never forget. God bless from down under.
We need more farms like urs..in this country....almost like starting over from the early 1900s. You know what I mean Pete....you are the man with a plan...god bless you Pete and Hillary an ur whole family
Wow, that aerial shot of the cows' pasture is incredible.
I’ve never followed someone on RUclips until I ran into your videos Pete. I have a 40 acre farm and I still enjoy watching your videos.
What a beautiful office it is too. You are blessed my friend.
Pete, I look forward to your videos. Thank for sharing your life experiences.
I'll be 63 in October. My previous job lasted almost 20 years. Now I'm at a small company just working until I retire. I can't say I've ever really know what I wanted to do, just that I loved being around people. I've got one duck and a few vegetable plants. I'm not sure if I'll ever be into farming like you, but I'd love to work on a farm to get a good feel for it. Sure enjoy your videos! Love from SC!
Good to see you in that University of Tennessee T-shirt! Go Big Orange!!
That was a great drone view of the before and after of your pastures. No dad joke? 😁
I have a doctoral-level degree. The best lesson I learned is that College/University is incredibly overrated.
What a beautiful farm you have ! Great story at the end.
This is some very wholesome farming.
The cows ...they talk to you ..they love getting their food ..so nice 😁 from Trinidad 🇹🇹🇹🇹
Wow! With that high drone shot you can see the cut down sectors the cows were on as you move them onto the fresh portion you extend... very cool!
Mamma can pull the freezer out of the SUV herself? Go Girl! Ha
I graduated in 86 with engineer degree and was slow to find a decent job, mom said come back to the farm, I said no way, and joined the Navy and made a career out of it!
Keep up the great work!
I'm curious. What happened to the farm?
@@57fitter swamp logger TV show guy bought it when my mom died.
Pete I watch your channel every night I’m 65 years old and just enjoy watching and learning a lot from lissioning to you just gos to show you your never to old to learn enjoy you and your jokes there so funny
It just takes that much living experience to figure out how to live. Congratulations! You made it!
You are so right about not being sure what to do out of high school. It’s the diversity of little experiences that are what is drawn from that will help you in your future. I didn’t want kids for the longest time, but my being a babysitter for the neighbors when I was younger sure helped me when I married and did want a family.
The cow grazing comments were just fantastic!
Saw the two parts on your home, not house, and I joyed it throughly!
I am a draftsman for an Architect for last 42 years and when I was younger built our home with family and friends help. It took bout 4 years to complete.it was an awesome experience.
You have a great farm too!
Thanks for sharing!
Great visit with you and Hilary. The drone shot was great for giving a clear view of the fence movement. Thoroughly enjoyed the diversity. ❤️
Addicted to watch your video's
You are lucky to have a supporting wife
god bless your family
Could not agree more at 18 I wanted to farm and instead of farming i had gotten my cdls and drove a semi until I was 23 then went and turned wrenches on them until I was 36 amd now I bought my own semi and back out on the road and yes its the one in my profile picture 83 kenworth
Stumbled on to your videos and realized we are leading parallel lives with the notable exception of me making the jump to farm life. :) I am an architect, graduated college in 92, have done many different jobs, have renovated a late 19th century home, etc. :)
Well, I'm so glad I started watching your channel. I retired 6 years ago and am enjoying being retired. It gives me plenty of time to watch quality channels, like yours. Your gentle nature comes across with ease and non- judgmental. I love the little things you share about life and can relate to your walk. And to have your life partner walking along beside you as you work the animals and land is so precious. I'm glad you left your professional career and went back to the land. I feel you two were made for it. I see joy and encouragement coming from your smile and your eyes. And I actually believe you mean what you say at the end of each video, Oh, and I have started to watch all the commercials all the way through because every little bit helps.
The best to you and yours from Tempe, Arizona.
Regarding efficiency: They should probably develop a much lower wheel barrow though smaller. I guess you could set up the barrow so it's tipped down and you wouldn't have to lift as much material as high.
Develop that idea and send it to Pete for a try.
Thank you for drone footage of fence move - I get it now 🤪🤓💛
Hi from Lithuania, watching and learning from your videos every day. Old, new, all of them :)
I'm 34 and turned my life upside down 2 times and now the third time - trying to start a cattle farm. If you do something it has to bring you joy, if its not fun anymore - dont do it. Ofcourse it is ups and downs, but in general it must bring joy to your life.
When you realise that you can do and learn to do what ever you want, then you experience freedom.
Have a nice day, looking forward to new videos :)
That was such a nice video. Good for the soul. Thanks for sharing some of your personal story. My wife has just promoted me to executive Vice President in charge of horse poop spreading. Love my little ground driven spreader.
Small farm Sunday video recommendation. How to quit your job, what happens with the money you have in your 401k or retirement. How to manage finances after you quit your job. Health insurance and other insurances should you hsve them or not and how can you afford them. I feel like as a 17 almost 18 year old wanting to start a farm with some farm land in the family these are some of the questions I have and I'm sure several other do as well.
Hello from Somerville, Alabama.......Good video.....Larry at Scoot's Organic
I liked Hillary explaining the chicken food and such. Nice to hear from her.
I have only been watching for a couple of days now but.. man this really makes me think about life haha
OH you have missed so much take a few hours and watch some of the previous videos especially the tractor rebuild and others,JUST A TREAT!!!!!!!!!
Mariners,Airforce ,Army and Coastguard! Live well!👍
I was going to send you a Tennessee shirt, but I see someone beat me to it. Keep up the great work, and Go Vols!
I bet he'd put up with another.
Good morning from Auckland, New Zealand !!!
As I was watching this video my wife who works from home was within earshot of the video audio at 7:27 and asked me "what are you watching". She picked up on two words you said, "castration" and "scratching"
Moving the cows to fresh grass was always my favorite part of the day as well!!
I love the way you show so many different jobs on the farm. More people need to know about what all go into raising animals and how they are processed. Everybody needs to know where there food comes from!!!!
love casual Thursday. rubber boots and shorts. also great aerial view of the pasture.
Love the aerial views when the cows move. 😁👍
Hilarie is at least a little more involved in the videos. Which I think is awesome. But I truly understand not getting your family involved too much. The inter trolls can be relentless. I’m not sure if I should start reading the comments or just keep not reading them. You’re always good for a story and a point, Pete. Excellent content! Love it.
Too short and not a single joke! However, best content ever and love your videos. Yes, it’s 3:55am in CA as I am watching this. Thank you.
I like that this channel uploads videos on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Thank goodness you persevere in bringing the animals to the food. The entire cycle depends on intense rotational grazing, even throughout the winter, and keeping fuel costs down. You could even get the pigs out there in a "pig tractor" box.
We will never disagree with your grazing operation. It makes total sense to us and we would do the same thing, if or when we start a herd.
I grew up around tractors like yours and I do enjoy hearing that steady uniform exhaust sound. I also do enjoy the sound of deisel green! There is a u-tube guy just north of you that has a huge dairy operation. Watching both him and you I get a wonderful mix of what farm life is like today. But your way reminds me of my childhood memories of all my relaive's farms in the Boonville, Louville area. That was in the 1950's, so you've have helped me remember those days- Keep up the farmin' & video'in from an old country boy now livin' the urban life in Rochester, NY
The arial shot helped so much to see what is reaally happening thanks. I wish people would just enjoy watching and stop trying to tell you how to do your job. Clearly you are good at what you do.
It makes me happy that you were able to succeed as an architect, it is not the norm. I went to college to become an architect in the early 80's. Towards the end of my second year my professor came in with a copy of the Wall Street Journal and read to us an article that showed architects at the time had about a 70% unemployment rate. My Dad worked two jobs to help me with tuition so it was a hard pill to swallow that I would spend all of this money to probably become unemployed. My Dad was very disappointed that I dropped out of college and went to work. I did work, I worked my way all the way up to middle management in a Fortune 250 before I stepped back to smaller companies where I had more, and at times, complete control. Not bad for a kid with a high school degree. I am almost certain I would have been a miserable architect, the thrill of managing a business was more than I could have imagined.
The little piglets are very cute and the drone footage really shows the benefits of grazing the cattle the way you do.
I am sending my husband out to graze in the back yard, I mean the back 2 in the spring. You got me at 'it's the relationship that counts'. WOW.... I'm in!!!!!!!!
Life is a journey. It's not reaching the destination, but the hard work and enjoyment along the way. Inspiring video.
‘86-‘91, I was in college at the same time as you. Landscape Architecture at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, CA. Very cool! I am trying to get a farm going right now. A life long dream. It’s so inspiring to watch your channel. Thank you for sharing this part of your life. I wish I had the mechanical know how you have with your tractor and farm equipment renovations. Very inspiring content.
What I like most is the reality of your work,at age 75 I appreciate your life story, had same professional career job for 47 years after schooling. Was very fortunate/blessed to have life long career in one endeavor .Constant learning is a must trait for all in life’s journey. You and Hillary seem to have found your happy spot, continue with great videos.
When I turned 40 I was a carpet salesman, got admitted to nursing program at community college and received AA in 2 years. I then spent 21 years doing a job I loved.
Pete, your are a very down to earth man and a pleasure to listen to and watch how easy you make things work on your farm. Yes at 18 you have lots of ideas but not always the right ones.
That drone footage showing the grazing is amazing.
It's like when you are out on the boat and you're anchored up and you can hear the whales blowing and making noise within 100 yards of you in the nighttime dusk really pleasurable I understand where you're at about being out in the field with your cows
"Morning commute".....WITHOUT the "road rage".
Farm-life certainly has it's share of struggles, challenges and demands, but you're still doing it because it's worth it, ( there ARE elements of it that are "therapeutic"!😊).
Thanks for sharing buddy god bless you and your family
Rubber boots and shorts! Great work attire! Love it!
I like your office view .
The views from the drone of the fences being moved give a great perspective!
Your journey is a wonderful story of average Joe. Let’s go.
After I retired from my job I’m glad I had this farm to keep me busy. As I look back I wonder how I found time for a job.
i worked 8-4 for years in Chicago Sears Tower; now i am retarded....i mean retired, and watching helpig the garden grow, so no doubt you are glad to be were you are at
I love your videos!! I don't remember your wife saying anything before... Or I may have missed it, but in any event, I enjoyed her comments and watching her do her work.
The overhead view shots are my favourite. Such a great perspective.
As always I agree with you, I did all kind of farm work like picking rocks, hay throwing, milking, all kind of gardening, it was fun and interesting at the same time...
thank you Pete
That drone shot of you extending the pasture was GOLD. Love it!
Loving these last few videos, especially the drone footage that’s not overdone. Keep up the excellent work Pete and Hillary!
Boy that drone shot really makes it clear what you're doing and the difference in the grass is striking.
