This is by far the most helpful tutorial I've seen. This video has helped me immensely. It's more helpful than the actual manual. I'll be purchasing your book as well. Thank you!
Agreed! I was so lost with this camera until I stumbled upon this tutorial last week. Immediately went out and bought the book, too! Thank you, Tony and Chelsea!
Thank you SO much for this. I've had this camera for nearly two years and I've learned more in one hour than in the whole time I was trying to get my head around the semi-useless camera manual. Great stuff, thanks.
fantastic video for someone like me who just brought this camera and hates reading manuals (I just can't get my head around them). being able to follow you and try everything along with you makes it so much easier to understand and implant it in my memory. I have downloaded your video and put it on my iPad so I can watch it over again when I need it as I take my camera out and start using and learning what it can do.
You blew me out of the water with this tutorial. Thank you so much. Switched from a Nikon D3100 to this camera & reading the manual is no comparison to your tutorial.
An update for the E-M10ii and/or E-M10iii would be greatly appreciated. Also, adding the optional grip available from Olympus really helps in improving the handling of these cameras when using heavier lenses such as the 12-40 Pro and 75-300 zoom. I keep the grip on my M10 all the time and have ordered one to go with the M10ii that I just ordered!
I have the mark ii and is my first camera. Although i have become cross eyed trying to soak all this in, it is by far the most informative video. thank you
I am happy that you spent so much time with this camera ! I recently purchased an EM-10 Mark III and I was a little bit confused by some of the settings. It's a great little camera. It is my first micro four thirds and I was pleasantly surprised by the resulting images.
Thanks for this tutorial guys, I just went out and bought this after saving for half a year. You're the reason I discovered this model and I'm so glad I went for it :)
OMG thank you! This is my first real camera and I have not been able to figure out how to use it and have been reading the manual obsessively. This video was set up flawlesssly and I love the menu in the description box becuase I will be coming back to this video in the future for sure. You are awesome!!
Excellent tutorial. Just bought an EM10 for my little army of manual lenses...I think I have about 20 of them last count. From Canon to Nikon to Helios to Jupiter to Konica to Pentax Takumar. With the Focal Reducer + fast 1.4's + in-body image stabilization...can't wait for the low light challenge.
OMG! What an awesome instructional video! I understand so much more about my OMD EM10 now. Believe or not, I have had my camera for 2 years and did not know it could do all the things you have shown. I may never go back to automatic mode again :) Thank you so much!
Excellent tutorial for my new E-M10. I have a Mark II, but almost all seems to apply. Have relied on your videos since you first guided me through my D5300 plus lens & accessories recommendations. Northrup remains my go-to source for all things photographic. And yes, I bought the book.
This was one of the most helpful videos on understanding my camera that I have ever seen. Thank you so much. I am definitely purchasing your book. I can't wait to get started. :)
An excellent tutorial. Thank you. I watched it in two sittings fumbling with my camera, but was able to follow along despite my butter fingers. The one thing I wish had been covered was panoramic shots. I can't seem to get them right and its probably a whole lot easier than I have made it.
Very well done. I have both the E-M10 (as a back-up) and the E-M1 and all the advice is spot on. I noted the omission of the Super Control Panel. It's a quicker way to get to many of the shooting options. Keep up the excellent videos and thanks again.
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you for this content. Your approach and delivery instill a lot of confidence, yet are very approachable. Just got talked into this over a new DSLR from the camera store in town and wasn't immediately feeling good about it. I thought I may have gotten pushed the wrong direction. This changed my mind completely. I'll be picking up the book / videos and working through the content as well. Thanks again and looking forward to learning more!
Thanks for the video. I just upgraded from my D5100 and I do HD Video commercial shooting with DSLR, namely in the last two years with the D5100. It way paid for itself but it lacked some control, which I worked around to get some pretty good stuff and got paid for it. Now with your video, I understand the settings of the new cam and reinforced my purchase decision. Too bad you don't have some tips on how the use the video side but I am sure I will figure it out. Again, thanks for your video and I will be purchasing your book. I just started shooting stills for clients in the last three years, thus expanding my skill set, along with my video production and learning from you and your crew is awesome. Thanks gang!
Thanks for this great tutorial ! As it sounds, the "multifunction" Fn option does not enable only the highlights/shadows settings, but it actually enables you to assign several functions to a single button. To do that, just keep the the Fn pushed and spin the back wheel to display the several options ;) This is the case on the Mark II, but it guess it is the same here
Great video- got this camera for my birthday and this tutorial has been so helpful in explaining the different features! It's also nice with the table of contents that I can always come back to this if I need a refresher on any of its features. Thanks for your help!
Super Job Tony! Got your book SDP after buying the M10, have watched this 3x so I now know my way quickly around this camera. TY PS of the youtuber's out there i love you and Chelsea's easy going non-elitist you can do style. Happy Holidays!
This was great! Not everything applies to my camera (an OM-D E-M10 MkIII) but most of it does, and where there are minor differences in menus it wasn't hard to figure out. Thanks so much for making this!
This was great! I have sat through three classes and still didn't get it. You did a great job making it simple enough to follow.Thank you. Now on to get your book!
Thank you so much for posting this video. Your reviews of the OM-D E-M10, and the price drop helped me decide between this and the A6000, went to see Chris at Milford Photo (who is awesome by the way) and he referred me right back here for help learning the camera. Went to your website and ordered your book. Thanks again, extremely helpful!
Tony I've watched this tutorial a couple of times and found it really useful so thanks for that... I have to say though that I was taking a snack eating porridge when you explained how to silence the 'Beep' It was a hilarious moment causing a minor eating malfunction... Great work you do really seem to enjoy your work!
Great video, I bought a E-M10 last month and I'm enjoying taking pics with it. Here in the UK its a great time to buy a E-M10 as Olympus have a £75 cashback promotion going on.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Just picked up a used Em10 with 14-42 ez kit lens and the 40-150 telephoto for $300 in mint condition. This is my first mirrorless/ micro 4/3 and so far I'm impressed! Can't wait to get some good glass and really see what this camera can do.
Thanks a lot for the video, subscribed! Super helpful and well thought-out, just picked up an em10 and the 20mm Lumix lens as my grabngo/travel camera and I have to say I actually like it better than my big DSLR. Feels solid, beautiful image quality, all the controls you would want in places that make sense...camera is a total winner.
Fantastically helpful and detailed video. Even though I had familiarized myself with most of my EM-10's functionality, I still learned quite a bit from the video. I also really appreciate the presentation style - it is very approachable, friendly and informative. I will look into the buying the SDP book to help me use my EM-10 more effectively, now that I know how the nuts-and-bolts work! Thanks.
Great video! I am just getting into digital photography and bought this camera along with the 45mm f/1.8 lens. Happy to hear you rave about it. Perhaps I will need that 75mm. All in good time! Thanks for taking the time. I learned a bunch.
Fantastic tutorial. Thanks Tony I love this camera, excellent value and fun to explore. Olympus prime lens 45 mm f 1.8 is my current favourite to use with this camera. Loving your book as well. Thanks again.
Hello Tony and Chelsea. I brought the em10 after your review. I've been using it and loving it. I want to do some time lapses but this options is not selectable (if that's a word). So looking forward to watch this video in hope it explains how. Thank you for all your excellent helpful videos.
+Tony Northrup This was a very helpful video as I recently bought an E M10 and also just started into "Stunning Digital Photography" last night and am enjoying it. Thanks
Quick comment about the BULB mode. There are two settings for BULB mode, one is Live BULB which is explained in this tutorial, but there is also Live TIME. To get to Live TIME scroll left one more time on the shutter dial. Live Time allows you to press once to open the shutter and press again when you want to close it. This means you don't need to hold your finger on the shutter. Also means that if you're cheap like me, you don't need to buy a remote shutter release.
This guy is cool... I think he tries his best to make things as simple as possible. God Job. I bought two of his tutorials from Amazon. it's well worth it for the price. One other thing, at least he speaks English...
Well well, although this video was from 3 years ago and i just got my Mark 3 today and still find the info here very useful! It's very much like my first camera anyway. The dials and function might just changes a bit but to a newbie like me they all seems still the same. Only finds that this camera were quite easy to use for a beginner like me.
Spot metering and Auto Exposure Lock (AEL) work hand in hand. Point the spot at the brightest thing in the frame then hit AEL. Re-frame, focus and hit the shutter.
Tony, I have the e-pl5. I love it, i don't think it is worth the upgrade yet. But I am going to wait for olympus to release a newer em10. Hopefuly they will update the sensor and processor. Cheers! Awesome tutorial.
What a great video, you are very easy to watch. I've just bought the mk II and wanted to get more familiar with it as I've come from a Canon. I'm going to order your book too :)
IMPORTANT! Thanks for the tutorial on the E-M10. You just made a mistake at minute 36 saying the camera does not support auto ISO in manual mode. It does. You just go in the menu to the point where it says Exp/---/ Iso then to ISO-Auto and change the settings to All. That´s it.Cheers!
Yoy can find this camera body refurbished on the Olympus website for under $300 right now, under the summer sale. Really nice camera for that price! Thanks for making this Tony!
thanks for the information, enjoying the mk II. Sure, I would probably have got quicker focus on a DSLR, but the controls feel great and it's small enough to take almost anywhere.
Thank you so much for the Olympus OM D E M10 videos. I have watched three so far. I ordered the OM D E M10 TODAY AND AM SO EXCITED. Two quick questions: how is the Mark II different? Should I use UV and or polarizing filters for this camera when taking landscape pictures, i.e. mtn vistas.. Should I buy your book on digital photography even if my new camera is not a dslr? Ok that was three questions. Respectfully, Michael. Apex, NC
Hi Tony, do you still have your OMD EM10 first generation? I bought one used and love it. One thing I can't figure out is how to take a self image and get razor sharp focus on my eye/face like I can when taking a photo of someone else. Suggestions? Thanks so much and really enjoy yours and Chelsea's videos.
Should i buy this camera of the lumix FZ1000? I like the big grip of the lumix and the HUGE zoom range with the built in lens, but i think, the bigger sensor of the E-M10 will give me better image quality.
Between my wife and I, we have both OLYMPUS E-M5II and OLYMPUS OM-D E-M1. Naturally, we share the lenses. I have also purchased a 2nd hand E-M 10 which was converted to Enhanced Infrared; On my now malfunctioning G11, I was able to create a custom WB for infrared. i have alternatives for correcting WB with the eyedropper, but I have a preference for custom WB, Could you help me with One Touch WB for the E-M 10; I have appreciated the videos for our three Olympus cameras.
This very helpful video for beginner like me, I'm using olympus om de m10 II. Can you please let me know how to set shutter speed like 1/13 sec, 1/30 sec, 1/320 sec?
Hello, you realy seems to like this camera acording to your videoS, and guide book witch y a bought. You say that you can get "very very sharp images" BUT, you also taught us how to look dxomark measurment so I did, and if I'm not wrong even with a good prime lens you can't even get close to the sony A6000 for exemple. Am I correct or is it something I don't see ? Anyway thanks you for yours videos, I come from France so english is not my first language, Chelsea and you makes it so esay to understand every time :) (sorry if I did some stupid english mistake) Thx
Nice tutorial. I'm thinking on buying this camera or something bigger like the Canon EOS Rebel T3, I'm inclined to the Olympus because of its portability and compact retro design. Which one do you think I should get for beginning my way into photography? Already bought your book, I'm excited to learn.
Hello, Tony and Chelsea. Due to this camera's similar basic functions, this video really prepared me for my mark II, so thank you very much! If you or anyone here could help a little bit, Is the tap-to-focus function supposed to work with video recording, or just for taking stills? I mean can I use tap-to-focus while recording a video? Because so far it's not happening with me. I'm using the 14-42mm kit lens and it's set to S-AF on A mode. Thanks again!
Great tutorial, I have a question. When I select Sequential H Mode, I take a few photos and then try to change it back to single shooting or another mode it won't let me select the button in the menu? Is there a reason.for this? Thanks
Would you suggest this or the Nikon D5500 for a first nicer camera? I love taking pictures and have a fairly good knowledge of photography. And I will not be able to upgrade for many many many years, so what would you suggest? I'm also interested in portraiture:) Thanks!
Thank you for the video Tony I learned a lot from you. two questions, on video mode, the focus peaking doesn't work for me also, the in video mode the touch screen focusing. If yo can help me on that please.

Helped me get familiar with the camera faster than any manual with lots of practical advice. Excellent video!

Tony, your tutorials are very good. Thank you for teaching me.
Hello Tony and Chelsea. I brought the em10 after your review. I've been using it and loving it. I want to do some time lapses but this options is not selectable (if that's a word). So looking forward to watch this video in hope it explains how. Thank you for all your excellent helpful videos.
I'd love to see an overview tutorial for the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II !
+Tony Northrup This was a very helpful video as I recently bought an E M10 and also just started into "Stunning Digital Photography" last night and am enjoying it. Thanks
It's truly is heartening to see Nikon (Zf) starting to catch up after almost 10 years...
Quick comment about the BULB mode. There are two settings for BULB mode, one is Live BULB which is explained in this tutorial, but there is also Live TIME. Thank you very much for a very, very detailed tutorial of this little camera.
Thanks a ton! Watched the whole video and bought the book.
***** Thanks!
Thank you so much for a easy to follow tutorial. Have also purchased your book and am looking forward to taking better pictures.
Thanks, Natalie! Enjoy!
Spot metering and Auto Exposure Lock (AEL) work hand in hand. Point the spot at the brightest thing in the frame then hit AEL. Re-frame, focus and hit the shutter.
Nice review. I was looking for a tutorial for multiple exposition in the emd10 mark2 and I found it. Thank you a lot.
this is my first camera, your tutorial is very helpful, thank you.
Thankyou so much, i just bought the E-M10 Mark 2 camera and this is so helpful!
Glad to help!
I'm going to order your book too :)
very nice. Tony!! another amazing Video from you guys... greetings from Vienna
Chris Rockt Thanks!
Thanks Tony for detailed tutorial, could you please add a Tutorial for OM-D E-M10 MARK II as well?
PRASHANT SINGH im not sure what the point would be as both models functions are mostly the same. specs are the only features that really differ.
I just go this camera and this video was super helpful! thanks for the help!!
Certainly appreciate this tutorial.
IMPORTANT! Thanks for the tutorial on the E-M10. You just made a mistake at minute 36 saying the camera does not support auto ISO in manual mode. It does. You just go in the menu to the point where it says Exp/---/ Iso then to ISO-Auto and change the settings to All. That´s it.Cheers!
this video is so helpful, i've learned so much i didnt know before! Thank you!
Very helpful and informative tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Yoy can find this camera body refurbished on the Olympus website for under $300 right now, under the summer sale. Really nice camera for that price! Thanks for making this Tony!
Enoch Haven Wow, that's amazing for that camera! And you're welcome!
Thanks! Learned a ton. Looking forward to digging into your other tutorials.
Fantastic Tony, I learnt so much. Thank you from chilly Denmark
Thank you for this tutorial. It helped a lot and I just bought your book.
Hey Tony, you actually can turn the Auto-ISO option on for the use in manual mode.
thanks for the information, enjoying the mk II. Sure, I would probably have got quicker focus on a DSLR, but the controls feel great and it's small enough to take almost anywhere.

Thank you, Tony for sharing these tips!
Bulb mode is not just for exposures of more than 60 seconds, it's also useful for things like fireworks and light painting for example.
I'm one of your thousands subscriber. I will appreciate it very much if you talk about using speedlite on OM-D EM10.
Great video! Definitely holding onto this for future reference.
Can you do a tutorial on E-M10 MARK II? please and thank you
basically same, same? but you can have auto ISO in M on mark ii
much better camera i would say... now MK2 WITH MK3 not so much differnece.
Why mark 2 is much better than the original?
Hi Tony, do you still have your OMD EM10 first generation? I bought one used and love it. One thing I can't figure out is how to take a self image and get razor sharp focus on my eye/face like I can when taking a photo of someone else. Suggestions? Very nice and very useful video. Thanks.
Brilliantly clear video!
Thanks!
Should i buy this camera of the lumix FZ1000? I like the big grip of the lumix and the HUGE zoom range with the built in lens, but i think, the bigger sensor of the E-M10 will give me better image quality.
The Oly EM-10 is now € 455 with the 14-45mm II R kit-lens! I feel tempted!!
Very well produced video thanks.
You're welcome.
This is great. Is there a video or guide for the updated versions like the MK3 or MK4?

I have also purchased a 2nd hand E-M 10 which was converted to Enhanced Infrared; On my now malfunctioning G11, I was able to create a custom WB for infrared. i have alternatives for correcting WB with the eyedropper, but I have a preference for custom WB, Could you help me with One Touch WB for the E-M 10; I have appreciated the videos for our three Olympus cameras.
Wow such a great video, thank you so much! Just bought the book :)
Anyway thanks you for yours videos, I come from France so english is not my first language, Chelsea and you makes it so esay to understand every time :) (sorry if I did some stupid english mistake)
Thx
Very helpful, I learned many new things. Thanks!
Good introductory tutorial.
Nice tutorial. I'm thinking on buying this camera or something bigger like the Canon EOS Rebel T3, I'm inclined to the Olympus because of its portability and compact retro design. Which one do you think I should get for beginning my way into photography? Already bought your book, I'm excited to learn.
Jose Adrian Sanabria which one did you get?
I still use mine with the Lumix Leica 15mm f1.7, 25mm f1.4, Zuiko, 45mm f1.8. TBH I don't use the Oly pan-cake zoom much...Get the ECG1 grip...
Can somebody say why it does video in ONLY auto iso? And with only one bitrate that I'm not able to change?
Thanks if someone help.
many thanks for an easy to learn experience
Hello, Tony and Chelsea. Due to this camera's similar basic functions, this video really prepared me for my mark II, so thank you very much!
If you or anyone here could help a little bit, Is the tap-to-focus function supposed to work with video recording, or just for taking stills? I mean can I use tap-to-focus while recording a video? Because so far it's not happening with me. I'm using the 14-42mm kit lens and it's set to S-AF on A mode. Thanks again!
Yes a tutorial for the mark 2 would be great. thanks
This is great!! Thank you! Could you please do a similar video for the FujifilmX-T10? Thanks!
