      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. In the end, the choice of a camera depends on your style and the photographs you plan to take. I'm certainly not capable of making a recommendation for anyone except myself - so I try to point out all the of issues I find valuable in making a decision. For some people it's features, for others it's usability and that's where I had issues with the E-M10-3 - great features, terrible usability.

    I just received a new one today. It took about a half an hour to set it up the way I like it for stills, which is why I bought it. I also got the 12-40 f2.8 lens, which is as heavy as the body is!! I have been shooting for a long time, but do not have the patience for complexity and deep menus. It seems to work well, fits my right hand better than any other small mirrorless camera does, my fingers naturally rest on the shutter button and dials without moving my grip. I prefer the tilt screen vs a flip out screen, the EVF is good enough and the build quality is better than I expected. All for not much money compared to almost anything else. I just sold all of my Panasonic gear except the G85, which I intend on using for video mostly. Now to get a 17mm prime, a 30mm macro, and a telephoto. Thanks for your review, a most excellent and complete one.

    I picked this camera up in October. I agree that the movie settings were hard to find at first but there is a lot of options once you dig in. The video quality was surprisingly good, the stabilization is amazing. Thanks for this video, it answered a lot of questions of some of the features. It's also nice to see Toronto in these scenes. I'd recommend the camera but wished the software allowed more customization in the different modes. This may have been a choice to help intuitiveness but would limit users as they grew with the system.

The latest mark 4 model seems to have fixed quite a few shortfalls that you mentioned and is on my shortlist as a travel camera, alongside the Canon M50 mk2 and potentially the X-T30 if the price drops a bit now the mark 2 is out. Nice review....I chose the E-M10 Mll over the lll for its metal body and feature difference and great price with a better kit lens for $449 USD. There IMO is no other camera in this price range that gives you a decent IQ and feature set. While no camera is perfect Olympus keeps it's zen. My example is fast to touch focus in all modes. While this is a complicated camera with it's limits, it becomes second nature with use (like any camera). Its a great complex camera that is very capable and a great tool for fun photography. Olympus ZEN :)

    Thank you for the in-depth and no-BS review. This camera is at the top of my - still not concrete - list. I bought a Canon 350d in 2006 and an Olympus Pen ep3 in 2013 because the Canon didn’t have video. I want to improve my technical skills without spending any more than this costs in 2020 and without adding weight of DSLR cameras. I don’t care for vlogging, but I do wish I could print larger than a 16mp can produce.
    Would you still suggest this as an ideal camera for me? The IBIS is a huge plus.

    Well, lots of negatives here, but I've looked at some very high quality shots on Flikr and equally high quality videos which show some lovely natural colours and beautifully sharp footage equal to the comparable and excellent GX80/85. I think both are fantastic cameras for the price. We get so used to "features" and deep menu tweaks and sometimes that obscures the most important thing : The IMAGE. I think there are a lot of harsh comments here about almost everything except the pictures!

My preference would rather go to the E-PL9 for its better compactness. The quality of the 4k videos and the battery life of the two devices are equivalent it seems to me (despite the only 3 axis-stabilization of the PL9). What do you think, what is the best choice? As someone wanting to taste a bit of photography, I'm wholy unsure about which camera to pick. This one is more attractive to me, mostly aesthetically, because it has the retro look, especially the silver version. The lumix G7 from panasonic on the other hand seems to have far more buttons and fun settings, just like this camera, though from what I can tell in less settings. Sadly, no retro style. What would be your opinion on this matter? Are aesthetics more worth it or the handling of the buttons and menus? I don't want to spend too much on a camera, in case it doesn't quite fit with me.

      Aesthetics are important - you have to love your camera, and take it out proudly. If the look isn't pleasing, you won't be a satisfied user. Have a look at some Fujifilm models like the X-T30 ruclips.net/video/AW2sDwqnUyo/видео.html they combine retro design with excellent physical controls. And the larger sensor will take better photos.

      Hey there, Maarten. I just wanted to give a bit of a follow up on this story. I've bought myself a camera and while it doesn't have interchangeable lenses or a retro styling, it does what I wanted it to do, being allround photography. As a stranger to the world of photography, I didn't know what style of photography I would like or dislike. If I wanted a retro camera, with the low low budget I had, I would limit myself to a single style, or at least lose a few styles along the way and not get to try them out until I got a new lens. My colleague suggested me the sony DSC-HX400V, which has a fixed lens of 24mm-1200mm. This means that I can do nature photography and close ups, whilst also playing around with for example street photography. The lower price which with accessories and all fell in my budget. Now, I can try everything out, learn the very basics and then make a choice for a retro camera in maybe a few years if and when I'm fully accustomed to photography and know what specifics I need and want. I've never seen a review on it on your channel and I personally would recommend it to the people like me, who are very indecisive, not sure about the specifics and want to try everything out without committing to a higher budget. I still wanted to thank you for the recommendations, which I will keep close, once I'm fully ready to buy a camera on a higher budget.

      It's a difficult choice. The selection of m-mount lenses is very limited compared to M43, but if you have older EOS lenses and an adapter, you might be all set. The larger sensor on the Canon might make a slightly higher quality image. If you have experience with either brand, you might prefer its menu system.
      In the end, the differences are small, you can choose with your wallet, your hand (which fits better) your sense of design and brand preference.

      @@MaartenHeilbron Thank you for sharing your opinion - it is very important to me! I need to upgrade my 'old' camera anyway, the black paint from the metal frame that holds the mirror is getting off the surface and constantly gets on the mirror and the matrix which is annoying. I guess it has something to do with the lack of weather-sealing of that body. I realise that Olympus EM10 III is not weather sealed either. My Olympus choice was mainly driven by the size and relatively low cost lenses. I can get it with three lenses (pancake 14-45mm, 45-150mm and 45mm f1.8) for £550. Do you think Sony A6400 or A6100 would be a better choice. It is twice as expensive (at least here in the UK) as the Olympus model reviewed here, but its autofocusing system is so tempting.

      All three are good choices, depending on your specific needs. If you are shooting mainly stills, the Nikon may be the more flexible choice with the best selection of lenses. For video I’d prefer the Olympus with its superior stabilization. Mirrorless has lots of advantages, particularly for video, but may not be for everyone. Until Canon increases the m-mount lens selection, it’s hard to recommend the M50, which is otherwise a solid and light choice.

I'm an amateur, just need it for trips, not commercial or semi-professional youtube videos, so I feel it was built for me:) Thanks for great review.

    Hi, Sir. I am confused. I like and want to buy a Fujifilm XT 100, but in my country, the Olympus OMDE M10 III is being discounted and the two cameras are about the same price. So, which one should I buy?
    greetings from Indonesia 🙏😀🙏

      While I agree that price is an important consideration, if they're the same, purchase the camera you prefer.

    Hello Maarten, thank you for you thorough review. Does the kit include a battery charger? I was considering buying one separately until I saw your wonderful review.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      I think that depends on the specific kit, but according to Olympus, the battery charger is included. Check with your dealer, or with Olympus in your region.

    The cost, size, weight and image quality make this camera a great value. I have the Mk 2 and it's my go to camera. I'm not a pro and I don't shoot video so there's no shortcomings for me.

    My dream camera is the Panasonic Lumix G7 for filmmaking in college. However, is this Olympus camera better than the G7?

    Is it possible to make infinity focus in this camera for underwater split photography by using a housing.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      I'm not sure what underwater split photography is, but the camera can be set to manual focus and then adjusted to infinity. Whether that will work in a housing, I don't know.

    Hi! I'm wondering which one would you recommend to shoot in low light and for occasional vlogging, Canon m50 or Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III? Thanks!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      Either could be a good choice, the Canon is probably slightly better in low light, but that could also be lens dependent.

    Please help! Can you turn off the level gauge? This camera will not let me take a picture unless it is PERFECTLY level, which is ridiculous and makes taking any picture extremely difficult!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 года назад

      That is ridiculous. I no longer have the camera, but the manual should reference this issue.

    • @chrisseeker1
      @chrisseeker1 2 года назад

      Put camera in A, P or M. Switch on menu, go to C1 and then Info settings. From there you can turn off level gauge. I don't find the level gauge prevents me from taking pictures. Or try reset in menu 1 which will reset all options to factory. Rob Trek has a large number of videos about the mkii that may help, even though the mkiii has dropped some of the options.

    Hello. Very good and detailed review. I felt myself on a test drive with this camera. I have a question. I'm not so interested about videography. I focus on street photography but I will also take landscape photos too (not as much as street photos) I was planning to buy DSLR Canon EOS rebel sl 3 (aka 250d) but also this camera could be good. What do you think, I really like to hear your opinion. Thank you

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 года назад +1

      I'd prefer the Canon because of the larger sensor, but, with the right lens, this could also be a good choice.

    Great review and great info in the comments section. I plan to use for shooting music videos and covers. Studio audio overlayed with performance and b roll. Question: is the autofocus or focus settings reliable enough for this? Sometimes I will use a tripod and film in selfie mode..sometimes will have someone to film. I’ve posted a few already on my channel. Thanks!

    Why do things have to be so complicated?! Sony and Olympus needs to hire the people who made the GUI on the Samsung NX1. It's not like they are doing anything these days.
