I finally decided to upgrade to an actual camera after having used nothing but a smartphone camera for years. After much research I decided to go with the Olympus Mark IV- Amazon just delivered the camera about an hour ago and even as a “beginner” camera it’s intimidating at first look. Your video was the first I found to help me begin to understand how to use this new camera and I found it to be a great start. Just wanted to say thanks!
Great video especially for newbies like me. Thanks so much for a great video. I could not find a manual for this camera so your videos became my best friend. Thanks again for a job well done.
Hi, good comprehensive review. I own three Olympus cameras one more advanced then the OM10 4 and one more basic but I find that I use this OM10 4 the most as it has all the settings I need to take great photos.
Thanks very much! Your posting is very helpful. I just got my camera yesterday and your presentation is way more interesting than trying to figure out the .pdf manual! I look forward to any more you do about the Mark IV.
This is a great video easy to understand since there is no real manual. My question is that I cannot get all the focusing to light up. When I press the shutter button down some of the lights illuminate. When I press it again, a different set of lights in different spots light up. How do I get them all to light up if I wish? Thank you for your quick reply. I'm sure I'll have a few other questions as I get more advanced.
Well done !! I just got this bad boy a couple of weeks ago and am loving it ! One question, how can we adjust the exposure compensation? Thanks In Advance!
I liked the review and for the price and my experience level i am going for it and purchasing this camera, unless you have another recommendation I should consider??
I just got one of these as a very nice Christmas present and your video is a wonderful introduction to fhe camera! :) There's just so many menu options and using this and your other setting specific guides will certainly be more enjoyable than reading the rather terse documentation. Though even if the factory instructions were superb seeing it live in video form is still my preferred way to learn. I couldn't decide between a 35 or 50 (35mm equivalent) lens aa my first prime but went for the 35 since I'll mostly be taking so called street style photos and travel photos with a lot of them in lower light. I also picked up the 12-40 f/2.8 because I thought having this range of focal lengths available would be great for learning which ones I prefer in practice not theory before buying more expensive primes which i may neveruse. Oh my camera was just the body so no zoom kit lens. Based on my research and my very unprofessional opinion I think this camera may be the ideal jumping off point for beginners even if they move off the micro 4/3 format in the future. I'm amazed at how little difference there is between the M10 and Olympus' professional cameras. The only missing feature I really wish it had was weather sealing. Thank you again for the great overviews and saving me tons of time. Christopher
Heather I have just acquired a E-M10 IV and am familiarizing myself with it. I have a basic question. Where in the menu can I select RAW or JPG and size of picture. I thought it should be in shooting mode 1 but I have no listing there.
Hello, many thanks for your great video on M10 IV. As I’m going to get this model soon and trying to learn street photo shooting, if possible, could you help me with these questions? 1. Is there on this camera a dedicated black&white mode or do I have to shoot in color and get black&white in post only?.. 2. As I have large hands, could you recommend me an handgrip to get better handling for this camera specific model? I have found some on the web but they say they are for EM10 mark 2 or 3. Maybe they are compatible with this MK4 too?.. Many many thanks in advance for your answers!
I'm baffled at how to zoom in using the kit 14-42mm lens with electronic zoom. With my old Pen camera, there was a lever/button on the top of the camera that moved the zoom in and out. I'm stuck with this lens on the OMD at 14mm, because I can't figure out how to zoom! Please help!
Hello Tara! This can be a confusing adjustment, but you just hold the ring on the lens to the left or right (similar to the lever on your old camera) to zoom in or out. Great question!
when i press the quick menu button, it doesn't show up. instead i get a lateral menu with colorful squares. any idea how i can make the regular menu appear?
I have owned Olympus cameras for the last decade. As a matter of fact, I own 4 currently (EM1 Mark ii, EM5 Mark iii, original EM10 and more recently the EM10 Mark iv) Long ago I moved from Nikon to Olympus and have not looked back. I love the weight, size, optical quality and of course price. I particularly like the Super Control Panel. I really enjoyed your tutorial And always think that it is a good idea to get back to the basics with any new camera. I am still unsure about how to move the focus point around with the 10 Mark IV. With my other Olympus cameras I have always moved the focus points with the toggle wheel. With this camera I thought that I was doing just that early on, but it now it seems that I have to use the front and tear control wheels to move it around. This is awkward. Is there any way to change that in the menu? Any advise would be helpful.
Great question! Over time, Olympus updated their mount from the four thirds mount to the Micro 4/3 mount. Your vivitar is the old mount so it would not work with this camera.
Thank you for an excellent video. I fully endorse the other positive comments that have been noted below. Yes, there are obviously other similar YT videos for this camera. However, it appears that only Rob Trek ( who is truly excellent and very underated) approach this task from the owners' perspective. Most videos go through the set up and menu system at warp speed as the presenter knows how to use this and the more advanced OMD/OMS equipment. You mentioned something, I did replay the video several times, but was unable to catch whether you said you were in the process of preparing another video detailing the APSM dials, would you be good enough to clarify? I set all my file "quality" settings at mix of S, SF and Raw. With my Pen F, this seems to really slow the fast frame rate down and the read time from the Scandisk 128gb, 170 took ages to read to the camera. This camera reads from the buffer far more quickly without using expensive sd cards. I will not ask you for a brand recommendation, however are you able to specify the card details needed to read quickly from the card to the camera and empty the buffer as quickly as economically possible? The reason I take every image in SF and RAW is that , the Pen F in particular, takes such excellent jogs. I don't use post software, other than that bundled with the cameras and Snapseed on my notebook or IPad. That said, I may take an image I would like to have reworked in post by a third party, hence using RAW for each image. It would be helpful if you could do ,if this has not already been done, a separate video on Live Composite and some of the more advanced image capturing modes of this very capable camera.
Regarding the P,A, and S modes, you can find them here! ruclips.net/p/PL0jHU7tULNujpSsJ6n5hrddSUWVRvKy_p As for the SD card, make sure you don’t buy one online unless your in a bind. If you do, make sure you buy from a reliable source. Also, avoid Sandisk. They have had issues in the last 7 years and have lost their reliability. Look for a card with the U3 symbol on it, that will give you the fastest reading/writing speeds your camera is capable of. Other than covering an overview of those features mentioned, I haven’t done anything further, but I will add it to my list!
The gx9 will have more video options with better stabilization and a more simplistic overlay, while the Olympus has a more classic overlay with more dials and buttons on the outside of the camera with great photo quality.
So, does this camera accept, fully functionally, the lenses from the PEN-E Series? By the way, Lady, Your exposition really shines on excellent language and visual mastering. KUDOS2U!!!
The hot shoe pin which supplied power to the mk iii has been disconnected on the mk iv which is why the nifty little bounce flash fl-lm3 will not work with this camera. I guess it helps improve battery life. The front left hand hot shoe connection pad is always open circuit. A pity.
It feels so "plasticy" in your hands after the Mk II. It's also IMHO a lot more than entry-level, it has features that could keep a beginner learning for a few years
Although it feels more like plastic, it is actually more durable and a lighter material than what made the mk II, which is why they chose to make it that way, but I get where you are coming from.
@@Shutterbug101 I mean a more complete evaluation of the lens, like sharpness and the like. One can't tell from RUclips in HD how the lens performs. The video is mostly about the camera, which is fine as that is what I was looking for, however you mentioned and used the 75-300; I think the 75-300 deserves its own video and comparison to some other lens. It would be nice to have downloadable files as well. Best wishes!
So sorry.........I figured it out. I am migrating to the E-M10 IV as an alternative to my Canon 80D. I have muscular dystrophy and was finding it hard to get pictures as sharp as I would like. I thought the IBIS on the Olympus coupled with it's much lighter weight would help my hand held shooting. It is not practical for me to use a tripod unfortunatley as I am in a wheelchair and I have weakness in my hands which makes setting up and adjusting tripods difficult.
Exactly why I started making these videos. I try and show as much as possible to give more visual help. Was there a specific area you needed more clarification on, as to what I was pushing? Or was the whole video difficult to follow? How can I do better for viewers like yourself?
@@Shutterbug101 When I push the quick menu button on the top left of the camera, my menu looks totally different - just a small bar on the left with only a few options. Is there some setting I am missing?

Thank you for this video! I just purchased my first E-M10 and the manual is so confusing! Your tutorial is so helpful!
Amazing. Thank you for explaining clearly and not dragging it on 😅

Thanks Heather , very good video, sorted a few things out for me, maybe a bit fast in places for this old dog.
This has helped allot I've purchased this model as my first proper camera for nature photography

Nice video, what do you think about the kit lens? They are so bad or great to used of street photography/ some nature views?
The 14-42 isn’t bad to start with, but I wasn’t extremely happy with the 75-300. Olympus does have far better lenses sold separately.
I liked the review and for the price and my experience level i am going for it and purchasing this camera, unless you have another recommendation I should consider??
This is a great beginner/hobbyist option, and is perfect if you want something light weight that can easily reach far distances with smaller lenses.
Is there a horizontal bar setting? I tend to get a list to starboard taking when landscapes

I have matched this camera with the OM 12 to 200 lens as a great, light, walkabout option.

Another quick question. After I took the images I plugged in the camera into the computer. But where to I look to see the images? I have a Mac laptop.
I have an OM (Vivitar) zoom lens 28-210mm f3.5 - f5.6 which I use to use it with my Olympus OM101 camera. Can I use it with the new Olympus camera .
