- If you have looked into the Fujifilm X100V or any X100 lineup, you will have been shocked by some of the quoted prices in the used market. Well, I have a camera and lens combination for you that you should really consider - this is the Olympus OM-D E-M10 and the Olympus 17mm f/1,8, the set can be bought on the used market for below $500, my set up from MPB was $446. In terms of a standard wide street photography camera set up, it doesn't get much better - besides the lack of leaf shutter there is very little between the two to complain about. Alongside the Fuji X100F, X100T and X100S this Olympus OM-D E-M10 rivals each of them with a full feature set to make shooting street a breeze.

Doing the Lord’s work, George. Olympus OM-D has been overlooked and under-appreciated for way too long. Love the clutch focus system, optics, colors, and the overall experience. Sensor size be damned, these are so fun to shoot with.
Thanks!
Absolutely I love my om-1 even as w full frame shooter
Yep! My OM 10 mark ii was my first camera and totally worth it
@@abigailmccoy650I wish it were under appreciated where I am. Prices are through the roof.
Yay I am not the only Olympus shooter in Manchester! I like Fuji and Olympus but love the in body stabilisation of Olympus.
Ey Manchester massive! Yeah the stabilisation is a big plus
if only their app transferred raw to our phones
Olympus is amazing I really don’t understand the lack of hype
Long time Olympus user here. For the longest time, I defended Olympus for its portability, affordability, stabilization and colors but I always get laughed at because it’s not full frame. So happy it’s getting recognized now. I started my photography journey with Em5 mark ii, gave that to my sister and got Em1 mark ii. I like the ergonomics of em1 mark ii than the em5, and I can shoot one hand with it without fear of being dropped especially on vacations. I’m glad I invested on 12, 17, 25, 45 primes. Best of all, my back never hurts. I usually just use the 12 and 45mm now. It’s a great breather from using full-frame cameras for my client work. (I do have a Q2 too but I will never let go of my Olympus. It’s first love and the colors are ✨)
Thanks for sharing!
Used the EM-10ii for the past year and fell in love with it. To the point I picked up an EM-5iii this week for $600 usd. I think the EM-5 being weathersealed and can record 4k it can be a great alt to the X100V.
The best weatherproofing + the best IBIS + you can blow the dust off your sensor, it's win-win-win.
That's fantastic to hear, thanks for watching!
How is it for video?
Olympus PEN-F is an excellent alternative to the Fuji X-100 series in my opinion. I absolutely love mine, the IBIS is ridiculously good and the B&W JPEGs it produces are amazing. Interchangeable lenses FTW.
Thanks for sharing!
I think pen f is even more handsome than x100v in build detail
Pen f is the God Father of Mirrorless camera , rest are just wanna 🐝
I have a Pen-F and I use manual lenses.. Simply fantastic.
Olympus was way ahead of its time. Really a shame that only Fuji managed to cash in on this great concept. Hope om manages to continue the great legacy.
Olympus was famouse for having one of the best colour renditions of all digital cameras. They actually pioneered the use of digital filters. I had a Pen -f for a while and ghe inbody stabilisation works excellently too.
That's not something I knew but thanks!
That lens is underrated and is quite wonderful. This was my first street setup. Pulls on the heart strings. The size and controls are awesome. Low light is it's only weakness and no weather sealing. All in all a fun kit.
Thanks for watching!
The Olympus 17mm f1.8 is good but the Panny Leica 15mm f1.7 is insanely good!
The E-M10 MK II is even better, is almost a mini E-M5 MK II. Amazing 5-axis Ibis, same video modes, and was the last E-M10 before Olympus dumbed down the available seetings.
Yes have taken a look into the Mkii before! Great deals on it too
EM10 mk II has a definite advantage with 5-axis rather than 3-axis stabilisation. I picked a used one up a couple of years ago with the EZ kit lens for under GBP 200. It's insane value
I've owned both EM10 and X100 series cameras. While you can get a similar experience for less with other cameras, the X100V is in a league of its own. It's like comparing a Fuji X-Pro to a Leica M11.
Totally fair!

Mate I'm loving what you're discovering and sharing about that little Olympus! Great videos, hope you keep them coming dude
Thanks Tom! Glad you like them
I lucked out and got a x100F on ebay a year ago for $825 - I absolutely love it and it convinced me to get an XT-5 when it came out. This seems like a GREAT option for those looking to save some money and who have gotten over the lust for a Fuji x100 line camera. I'll definitely be trying this in the future.
Thanks for watching!
I have never thought much of any Fuji camera. I seriously considered the X100F a few years ago, but in the end I bought used EM5MKII to carry around. The deciding factor for me was fixed lens. The 23mm F2 is pretty decent lens, but it is limiting. The EM5 wins hands down, and it actually has a superb set of features missing from many Fuji cameras. They might be catching up these days, but Fuji is not for me.
👍
It was your $300 Street Photography Camera video that drew my attention to the Olympus. Some time ago I decided to do street photography. So I started researching. I soon realized that a small camera that didn't have to be new would be the right choice. I then searched for several weeks and was able to buy an OM-D 10 MII with 297 releases and two kit lenses on Ebay at an attractive price. It came to me in the original box and it even smelled new. After a few tours at my place of residence, I now have my first trip with the camera behind me. I only had the Lumix 25mm f/1.7 plastic lens, which I bought separately. What can I say. I still don't really understand what I always set on the camera, but I strictly avoid the automatic mode and, despite all expectations, brought back a lot of very appealing pictures from the trip. But what I quickly noticed was that the 25 mm object does not always fit, especially if you like photographing buildings. I have now ordered the Lumix 14mm f/2.5 Pancake to gain more experience with the camera. From the 14 mm lens I expect a similar perspective as with a smartphone, with which I have taken a lot of photos before. As already mentioned, I am a complete layman. What can I say in summary. Your tip with the camera was worth its weight in gold. I love the look, the feel and the amazing quality of the photos. I am aware that I still have a lot to learn. Thank you again for your entertaining and informative videos, which no doubt opened the door to the possibilities of street photography in an excellent way. Keep it up...
A little tip: Get the Risespray 35mm 1.6. It is a beast for the money. It has a very vintage quality. It is super fun to use. MFT is where a lot of fun can be had!
Thanks so much for leaving a thoughtful comment, happy you have found a great deal too! It really is a great option for trips as you say, plus the budget lenses are lots of fun to experiment with. Appreciate the support on these videos, it really does mean a lot 🙏
I bought the old em5 second hand and I love it, in all its aspects, especially the old film camera look, is a lot similar to my old om20 Olympus especially when I mount vintage lenses.
Plus the body is sealed with dust and water, of course, is 10y old, and you can not trust him 100% but is better than nothing.
Great to hear!
My street camera is an Olympus EPL9 with the 17 1.8 lens & the original Olympus optical viewfinder for the 17mm 2.8 lens. It is a great small setup. You can find the viewfinder used still for a reasonable price & they are very good.
Great set up!
I’ve got an X100 that I bought secondhand years ago. It’s still going and is my favorite camera for street photography.
Favorite purse camera.
That's a great class of camera, good call!
I'm an ex Fuji x100f owner and now my cameras are Olympus e-m10m3 & Canon r10. Yes sometimes i missed the fix lens compact x100f but if i can combine my Olympus with a pancake (panasonic 20/1.7 for example) in the future, i'm sure it will give me more fun when i want to go outsude with a vintage retro rangefinder sytle. camera. And final word, Olympus E-M10s' can be the most handsome camera.
A lot of folks following photography trends tend to overlook the Olympus/Pana cameras. I picked up a few bodies + a lot of nice primes for the price of a X100V. Imagine that.
That's fantastic to hear, thanks for watching!
Why do they overlook Olympus cameras? Olympus has a great and long history in photography and has always produced excellent cameras from what I know, I don't get it 🤔
It is not fair to name olympus as "fake" to fuji, olympus is far better than ff.
Yeah i'm very disappointed about how fuji build their medium range of cameras, the olympus counterpart feels much more premium
If its better than ff, then why do professionals not use m34?
@@slampest are you professional who willingly spend thousand of dollars just to achieve some even smallest different in photo quality, olympus is better than fujifilm in term of what you get from your money and for everyone, not just professional that's fact

Recently I went back to shoot with my a6000 paired with the Samyang 24mm 2.8 just to walk around with a small combo for street photography.
I am very happy with the results. For any other situation I will take the big camera with the Tamron 28-75
Also I do not find the raw files from Sony hard to work with, but I don't have experience with any other brand 🤣😅
Great combo! And yeah to be fair they're not unworkable, I used Canon and Lumix before committing to Sony for pro video and photo work. Video it's my preferred but for photography I enjoy trying other options!
Sony A7 with Samyang AF 35mm f2.8. Shutter sound could wake the dead, tho!
I am running a Linux-based system, so I've gotten pretty good at working with raw files in RawTherapee. It has CLUT-based film emulation options.
@@GeorgeHolden so what's your low-mid budget option for video?
@@noodlessoul8356 Sony A6300
Thank you for this! Thanks to one of your earlier videos on the em10, I traded in my fuji x-t3 for an em1 iii with a bunch of lenses. I kept my x100v 😊 The em1 iii has a feel and connection that is hard to explain, portability, features and the IBIS is insane and so much fun. Thanks for the preset! Definitely going to try! 👍
Thanks for watching!
I have an Olympus EM-10, and it is good, but for the street, the edge my Lumix GX-9 adds is the 20MP sensor and the ability to set a minimum shutter speed, in a rangefinder style -- otherwise close to EM-10. I love the Olympus 25mm on the street. And the 45mm is super sharp. And for bargains, the Lumix 14mm is good, and right priced. Another Lumix lens which is great is the 30mm macro f2.8, which is sharp edge to edge, and focus is fast, so it is a general use lens. But, after getting the Olympus 25mm f1.8, it might be the one glued to camera the most. For smallest of carry, I have the Olympus PEN PL-8 + the Lumix 14mm pancake -- wow it that compact. If I used the super wide more, I guess the next step is to go with the Lumix 15mm with aperuture ring and f1.7 -- nice. The Lumix 14mm f2.5 gets the job done, and has an interesting look about it. Can't put my finger on it -- is it old school, film color, or just a little off which makes it right? For $198 USD a made in Japan lens is a bargain. And yes indeed the EM-10 line is great, and for street I can use it in Shutter Priority to keep it from falling into a range which is too slow. Actually, with the last lenses, it can be used in Aperture Priority. Regarding Fujifilm colors, I sometimes add Velvia or Provia modification as a last process in editing on PhotoScape X. Mostly I find Olympus and Lumix current models produce fine colors, and B&W images. In camera styles, for the life on me, I don't know why Canon doesn't reintroduce the Canonet line in digital cameras -- those would look sharp - very sharp! And why are Olympus plastic now??? - Loren
Thanks Loren!
If you can find one, pick up an Olympus digital Pen-F. An even better Olympus rangefinder experience. I’m still hoping for a Pen-F 2 with the sensor from the OM-1. Fingers crossed.
Yeah would love to try!
Great analysis. I loved your spreadsheet by the way :) It is crazy how little extra one gets for such a lot of extra money. Your example shows that with a bit of smarts and self discipline one can enjoy photography without breaking the bank. Also, losing or breaking your Olympus setup wouldn't be financial ruin. Thanks.
Thanks Keith, yeah I completely agree and I think for walk around street photography we don't need these high end models - simple and enjoyable allows us room to experiment in my opinion
The Fuji X-E1 and Fuji 23mm f/2 would be a good option if you definitely wanted to go with Fuji. My X-E1 served me well for years, and its image quality will hold up just fine. Heck even the first-gen X100's images still hold up, even if its EVF and autofocus don't.
That's fantastic to hear, thanks for watching!
Whenever you’ve tried any M4/3 camera, you realize how painstakingly slow Fuji cameras are. Especially the first generations (like the xe1, xp1). I thought the Fuji grass was greener but for user experience it most definitely is not. But ymmv.
@@GeertKusterI don't know... I have a Fujifilm xe-3 and I really love this camera, personally I don't find it slow. Not doubt that also Olympus makes amazing cameras 👍
I recently picked up a em10 mark ii with the lumix 20mm f1.7 ii for under $400. I bought it to fill the Fuji X100 sized hole in my heart after I sold mine. This camera is great, it has snappy af, has a great back screen and evf and feels great in the hands. prime lenses are the way to go on micro 4/3 for quality and depth of field. deals can be had if you wait!
Thanks for watching!
The black and white art effect on OK 10 mark Iv is really amazing! I’m using sigma 30 mm and lumix 20 mm 1.7 for video and photography. It really stands out.
That's good to know!
I had this exact combination and sold it last year -- not that I didn't like it, I loved it. But at the same time, I wasn't really doing much with photography and I thought it should go to someone who would make use of it.
That's interesting, thanks for sharing!
I have been using the OM5 and OM10 for quite a long time before I switched to Lumix and Leica. The experience of the OM-D systems can't be beaten by any brand I tested or used afterwards. The only reason why I left Olympus is that I wanted to upgrade to a fullframe system. Olympus is really the most overlooked brand on the camera market.
One thing: I switched to Olympus after being quite annoyed by the slow focus of the Fujifilm X-100 series. No regrets ever and the ability to use absolutely tac sharp lenses such as the Lumix Leica Nocticron F1.2.
Thanks for watching!
I almost want to say that I "switched" from Sony APSC and Sony FF to Olympus. That's not 100% true. I will sell of all my APSC lenses and bodies but keep the full frame. But I will tell you, that the size, feel and ergonomics are so much better with Oly E-M5's. So much so that I really wish that Sony bought Olympus and upsized their Sony bodies for full-frame with Sony's excellent sensors, now that would be cool!
In any case, I was one of the many that overlooked Oly until 2022. I selected them for their weather sealing and portability. Then I fell in love with the way that they handle. They are the cameras I go to most often.
I bought a Lumix GX9 instead for the same purpose, amazing camera, so great to see some MFT love out there!
Thanks for watching!
Mft is way underrated. But I just can't get to love the aspect ratio. Already never liked thee 6x4.5 medium format ratio back in the old film days.
@@edzardpiltz6348 I kinda want a square format lol. But 43 has worked for me. I do find it funny they went with more of a Medium Format aspect ratio.
I’ve been using the XT4 for a while and feeling that my old EM5 ii is doing fine to daily using. Hilight roll off is pretty much the same and also the lens character is looks similar to XF 23mm. (May be some more flare)
I also find out that the camera color profile work almost like the Fujifilm color profile in the Lightroom.
So yes! I agree with you to using Olympus for the alternative X100V
Thanks for sharing!
For even more budget friendly retro look, look for the silver Panasonic GF7 with a silver 12-32mm kit lens. I got this combo for $190 on ebay last month. I also scored an original Sony RX100 in excellent condition on Mercari for $100. (not the nice retro look though). Lastly, I bought 3 of the following ones (for me, my wife and daughter0 for prices ranging from $50-80 - The Fuji F40FD. Smaller sensor, but still decently large, only JPG but in my opinion a fantastic camera to stick in your pocket. It has the Fuji Chrome preset, built in flash, and takes those wonderfully retro feeling images. (I buy too many cameras, I have a problem..)
We have the same problem, may start a support group
I was looking for a camera for a while and all I could find on RUclips were recommendations for the x100v that was 100% out of budget. Then I came across one of your videos talking about the Olympus OM D EM10 camera from mpb and decided to get one and I love it. It's the perfect camera for me as a beginner, so I just wanted to say Thanks! This video will also be so very helpful to bring up my game!
Thanks for watching!
It's been ages since I did street photography, but I can attest to the virtues of these Olympus EM5s and EM10s. I mostly shoot with an EM5 MkI and find it a terrific combo of value and quality. I mostly shoot with the cheap, crisp Lumix 12-32. I'd love to have a couple of Lumix/Leicas, but can't justify the cost. Those not familiar with M43 will find the image quality holds up well in most applications.
That's fantastic to hear, thanks for watching!
The world kind of sleeps on Olympus, but everyone that uses their cameras sings their praises and they make some phenomenal m43 pro level lenses.
Agreed, I used to laugh at them having only used one years ago, till I have the M10 a go and now I completely understand why they stand out
@@GeorgeHolden When I first tried out their 12-40 2.8 lens I was blown away. It’s easily one of the best general zoom lenses I’ve ever used; and I’ve used a lot of them, new and old.
It was so good I insisted we use it on a commercial gig that we were using the og pocket 4K and had some shots that we needed to stay nimble. So I recommended we just shoot the whole thing with that lens to save time, against the concern of one of our producers, and it ended up looking amazing. That same producer later said it was one of the best looking projects that they had been apart of. And it was for a big brand.
If someone is using m43, which is becoming rarer these days in the age of cheap full frame and powerful/affordable s35 cams, I always recommend they check out what Olympus has been cooking up in the lens department.
dude, thank you so much for this video! so helpful for someone looking to get their first serious camera and is totally overwhelmed with prices and options!
My Panasonic gx80 is a great range finder style and fairly cheap while the stabilisation is even better. The Olympus 25mm 1.8 is fantastic on it. The PanLeica 15mm is amazing but a bit expensive. For a nearly pocket sized set up the 20mm Panasonic lens works well.
Yeah the GX series are fantastic!
@@GeorgeHoldenyup, fantastic except mediocre battery life, horrible EVF's, unreliable and slow AF, Barely usable focus peaking, and scroll dial failure. Went oly and not looking back
I am so triggered you called the Oly a fake x100v haha, but I'm glad you've discovered how magical micro 4/3 can be!
Hahahaha then the title worked!
Same haha I was like "HEY! Rude!" 😂 Love seeing people spread the Olympus love! I use my OM-D EM5 with an adapter for E-series four-thirds lenses (not MFT) and it's so fun! AF is slow as a glacier with that setup but I use it for mostly still subjects so it's no issue 😊
Chapters where?
I prefer the X-E* series of Fujifilm to the X100* for the same reason, interchangeable lenses. I have both the X-E2 and E-M10ii, and between the heavy cost of Fujifilm lenses and the awesome image stabilization of the Olympus, it’s really a big win for Olympus. As for filmsims, you can get some great SOOC JPGs from the Olympus too. Great review!
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video, long LONG time Olympus user here and as much as I've tried to really get into Fuji cameras. It's honestly hard. I still use my E-M1 Mark II from 2016 and this camera can be had for less than $400 sometimes and you get 60FPS bursts, Pro Capture (which buffers 60 frames BEFORE you hit the shutter all the way down so you CAPTURE that decisive moment), hybrid AF. Coming from a 1DX the E-M1 Mark II outperforms it in most outdoor sports photography. Then it's small enough to be a fantastic street photography camera. THEN it's got C4k, true 24, OM-LOG, and 1/48 shutter for a true 180 degree shutter for someone that wants to be a narrative filmmaker.
Thanks for watching!
And your E-M1 Mark II has even better, truly awesome 5-stop IBIS, making the need to raise the ISO for stationary objects unnecessary - the IBIS shifts the balance to Oly despite the smaller sensor in low-light.
I've become a really big fan of Oly cameras and lenses starting with the E-M5 Mark II and III. :)
Olympus folk here too! Not to mention the ergonomics of EM1 Mark II is superb.
@@francesremo still the best feeling camera to date!
Looks, and feel is alot of the deciding factor when it comes to choosing a camera. Especially for a hobbyist. I would also add to go for what inspire and motivate you to pick up the camera so you can go out more and create photos.
I’ve owned sony a6000 and rx100, fuji xt20 and the og x100. The fuji x100 feels really good to use. I’ve brought it with me more than the rest of my other camera.
I have recently sold it during the hype of x100 series and got myself a used Leica Q. One of the best decision I’ve made.
Cheers.
Thanks for sharing!
Good video and comparisons. You do make some good points.
But, like other RUclipsrs have pointed out, the main reasons for getting the X100 series of cameras are the leaf shutter and flash sync speed, in addition to the built in ND-filter for up to at least four stops.
I have an OM-D EM 1 II and I would love it if could replicate the X100V’s features but it cannot. The lack of OVF and bad high ISO performance are just two other reasons why I want the X100V, in addition to aforementioned shutter and flash sync speed.
Yeah so I mentioned the leaf shutter but food point on the ND, personally I don't think the flash sync matters much in street photography
Thank you for simply ending the video and not saying “I’ll see you in the next one, peace!” like everyone else!
Thank YOU for noticing 🙏
Great comparison and choice! I fell in love with the X100 series a few years ago and craved a similar camera with the option of changing lenses. I decided to spring for an OM-5 and absolutely love it. IBIS, better weather sealing, negligible loss in image quality, and beautiful color science. Its the same size as an X100 with any of the many pancake M43 lenses. Or a little bigger with a moderate aperture prime or zoom lens. When I'm craving the faux X100 experience I use the Panasonic Leica 15mm f/1.7. The E-M5/OM-5 line even has twin manual control dials on top of the camera like a Fuji. I do miss the leaf shutter for flash photography but the option to swap out lenses is huge.
This little pocket rocket was my first mirrorless camera and I just bought my sister one. I completely love it.
That's great to hear!
Panasonic GX9 if you want the rangefinder aesthetic, though it tends to go for a lot more than the EM10.
Yes good idea!
Great video mate! I feel like the M10 is to you what the Gx80 is to me, considering specs and portability 🙌 at this point, there’s no reason in investing that amount of money in a fixed lens camera (would rather invest in a GRIII)..
That's fantastic to hear, thanks for watching!
I think there's something about these 1st gen "Live MOS" sensors. My GH2 produces similar results that I can't replicate even on my E-M1 MkII with a "better" sensor. It drives me crazy that I can't figure out what makes them look like this, but I will happily buy another GH2 body when this one bites the dust.
That's fantastic to hear, thanks for watching!
@mipmipmipmipmip I would believe it. I think if Panasonic didn't have such god awful white balance detection in the GH2 it would be a cult camera for sure.
Great video. I do love a spread sheet!
I was late to go to digital, but have gone through a few digital cameras. The most enjoyable digital camera i owned was a x100f. But i didn’t keep it. I just find digital cameras to complicated and faffy, although you can take billions of photos and change the iso shot to shot I love the simplicity of a film camera.
Just as a hobby i find film cameras nicer to own and use, and updating digital, buying all new lenses is very expensive. I have some old Nikon gear and now my only digital camera is a d600 which was mint,£350 and works perfectly with everything i already have
Thanks for watching!
The OMD with the Olympus 45mm f1.8 is a legendary combo. If you want to go more compact than whip out the Panny 20mm f1.7!!
Great take!
The 20mm has a beautiful rendering. But its AF is awfully slow and unreliable on an Olympus, imo. So I wouldn’t use it for faster scenes
I got my OMD EM 0 Mark ii last year for 250 and when I went to sell it the stores didn’t want it which I don’t get because this camera is amazing. Decided to keep it for travel shoots.
Really pleased you're giving some much deserved love to the OMD system. I still have all my lenses, including the 17.5mm. I think I said previously my favourite was the 14mm pancake (IQ not the best but great for wide street) but they're all exceptional pieces of glass and so diminutive. The 12mm is razor sharp, built like the 17.5 and the 45mm. The 14mm and 20mm are great pancakes. Damn, you make me want to purchase another Olympus all over again! Keep up the great work, George.
Oh, and I agree on the straight out the camera results. Jpgs replicate the Olympus legacy lens look (warm and rich) and require little post, while the raw files are, like you say, easy to work with. Well said 👍
Thanks for watching!
14mm & 20mm pancake lens are for hipsters. Real photog use 9mm fisheye body cap lens :D
I have a Lumix GX80 for the very same reason, I prefer the rangefinder styling with the EVF in the corner. As for the lens, I was considering thy Oly 17/1.8 and the Lmuix 20/1.7, eventually went with the Lumix.
Great shout, yeah I do want to try the Lumix 20mm
@@hanumanguy As for the bodies, I don't know the specs of the EM10, I think it''s mostly down to personal preference. DSLR/Rangefinder style, JPG colors etc. As for the lenses, there are a few comparison reviews available on youtube. Other than the obvious focal length difference, the main pro of the M.Zuiko 17/1.8 is faster and quieter AF, much more usable MF with the clutch mechanism. The Lumix 20/1.7 is thinner (pancake design), cheaper and maybe optically a tiny bit better. In my decision, price and the physical length of the lens were important. I also checked what focal lengths did I use most with the 12-32 zoom, and it turned out I used the range around 20mm quite a bit more than the one around 17.
My EDC camera is Sony a5000 that is really bargain for what it can give. Use it mostly with a kit lens. Also I have 3 Nikon manual lenses and it's also fun to use. It's really small and light camera with 20mp APS-C matrix. The only two downsides for me - no viewfinder and above ISO 800 images are too grainy. I have a full-frame camera and some good lenses for it but it's heavy and just not so fun to use for walk-and-shoot
Great to hear!
Even closer to the X100V (in terms of form factor) is my Olympus E-P5 with the same 17mm lens. Only downside is the lack of an EVF (one of these days I may add one of the VF viewfinders to my collection of gear.) Love the manual focus clutch mechanism. I’ve found that (except for real close up work) I can set focus at 3 meters with an aperture of f/5.6 and leave it there for almost all street shooting.
Yeah to be honest adding an external OVF is a good idea especially for the wider focal lengths
@@GeorgeHolden the only reason I might seek out one of these EVF finders is that the LCD screen is a little diffuse to see in sunny conditions - even so, I can generally see it well enough to frame up the scene. In any other lighting conditions I would generally opt for composing on the LCD anyway.
Nice point of view. I own an E-M10 Ii and recently got a 7artisans 18mm f6.3 mark II. I got pretty surprised with the results I get with this combo, as the images, straight out of camera with this lenses are quite film-like.
Thanks!
I paired mine with Panasonic 20mm F1.7. Starting to appreciate it more since I can edit its raw photos directly on my Lightroom mobile. Great video btw.
I sold the Mark IV of this back in like March/April of this year and I just ordered a new one with this exact setup. The combination is such a good one for street and urban photography that I couldn’t stay away. As much as I love my R8 for bigger shoots, it’s just not pocketable or logistical to bring everywhere given it’s cost and size. I’ve started shooting film too, but those analog machines are so dang heavy sometimes when you just want to travel light and this OM is just alike the perfect balance between something that’s retro and something that meets the needs.
Glad you like them!
So happy Olympus/OM Systems is finally getting recognized. So many people are put off by the m43 sensor because its "low mp" or "ew it's a crop sensor" without even having used them. Currently I shoot with an OM System OM-1 Mark II and people are blown away because the quality is on par with fuji/canon with a better color response than Sony (the true villain in photography). The best part is that my street camera is an OM5 and there is virtually no difference between it and the OM1, buts it's a fraction of the size which makes it perfect for concealment.
I miss my EM10 , I sold it and up graded to a em1mk2 and now a em1x. The EM10 with the panny 12-32 was a great combo. One day I'll pick up another.
I owned the Fuji x100 and the Fuji X100S. I tried to like them but never liked either one of them for the reasons you so well listed in your video. I was lucky to come across a brand new Olympus EM10 Mark II shortly after it came on the market at a very reasonable price. I use the small, fine pancake zoom lens on my Olympus. This camera revolutionised my photography and I have never looked back.
Great video! Recently looking for a street/travel cam. Had a hard decision between a heavily used Fuji XT2 and mint eM5ii plus wethersealed lens for $100 less. Went OLY. Don't regret it. Perfect size to take everywhere.
That's good to hear! I also think the X-T3 onwards is good but first two generations aren't great
I regret not buying an original X100 a year or two ago when they were about 200$ in Europe, could've sold it now for more than double.
But i do enjoy the fact that i've got a Fuji XE-2 for 160$ last year before they doubled in price. With a thumb grip and a button shutter is the most enjoyiable camera to shoot ever.
That's great to hear, I'm testing an old X pro 1 at the moment which I got for very cheap - can't say I love the Fuji experience but it does have benefits
We need more of this camera please!
AWESOME VIDEO
Thanks for watching!
You're a genius. Upgraded this setup with an OM-D E-M5 Mark ii in good condition and the same lens in excellent condition, for just 500 €. Can't wait, to give it a try :-) My first MFT.
Thanks for sharing!
I really like the look of the silver camera and silver lens. It has the retro look to it.
When I was looking at 2nd hand OM-D cameras the silver was nice but the small paint chips or bubbling made me choose the black version instead.
The 17mm F1.8 looks really nice and the party trick of the manual focus is so cool.
Great video about finding that affordable Fuji camera, lol.
Everything is going up in price!
Good work with the colour presets!
Thanks for watching!
Well the retro pro look is black. No reflection with black. Easier to read dials in black. Both black and silver tops models look sharp!
I love my OMD EM10. Very friendly and fun camera to use and great images too. Stabilisation is great as well. Thank you for sharing!
This is great! Might I also recommend the Olympus em5, the first one which also sells for about $200 on mpb!! I got one a couple years ago and I love it!!
Thanks for the tip!
@@GeorgeHolden and if someone cares about weather sealing, the em5 is! Of course, weather sealed lenses are more expensive, but finding good and cheap or cheaper weather sealed lenses for m4/3 can be a challenge. And not everyone needs weather sealed stuff! I quite enjoy your channel, and appreciate what you’re doing!!
I had the X100V for over a year, never bonded with it. It's quirky and I actually preferred my old, beloved GX1+EVF+20mm1.7 over it. I sold it making money over it, didn't miss it for a second. Its worst thing was its pig vomit lens. Incredibly overrated lens that you cannot change since it's fixed! I bit the bullet with a Leica M240 + a humble 400 euro used Voigtlander 35 1.4 Nokton. I tested them beside before selling the Fuji... well, Leica is not overpriced at all: despite being 10 years old it humiliated the X100V by far, both in resolution and color depth/separation/3D. To sum it up, for casual shooting I still have my GX1, for more dedicated days I have my Leica(s, actually my first one was an M246 Monochrom). Super happy!
Great Video.
I have the OM-D E-M10 camera in black color. My dad bought it brand new when it first released back in January 2014. He later upgraded to the E-M1 Mark II back in 2019. The OM-D E-M10 is one of my main street photography cameras in my arsenal. It has heft to it which makes the camera feel very premium. The materials also feel expensive as well. I also love the overall aesthetic of the camera itself. It looks like traditional film camera. I have it paired with the M.Zuiko 25mm f1.8 prime lens and the pictures I get out of this camera are amazing. Being almost 10 years old, my copy still works like brand new.
In my opinion, this camera is way overlooked by so many people. I do not have the Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens but after this video, I am considering purchasing one myself to add to my OM-D E-M10.
Thanks for sharing±
I actually got rid of my x100v and picked up a Nikon Zfc and there’s honestly not much I miss about the Fujifilm.
That's great!
Thanks for this nice video. I am lucky enough to own both Fuji and Olympus. Fuji are excellent cameras, but I always come back to Olympus. The one that comes closest to the X100 is, in my opinion, the extraordinary Pen-f. Its vintage look is sublime, even more so than the Fuji. It has a colour wheel that allows you to create film simulations directly on the camera. Coupled with Pana's 20mm pancake, it's an incredible camera that looks much better than the X100.
Yeap. I own the x100V, owned the x100F, and have 2 copies of the pen f. Agree with you… I think they are different but I do think that if you look for a “closer” feeling to Fuji. Then the pen F with its rangefinder style is closer. I would love to try the EMD 10 though
@@DrLuisAlbertoParra Yes, the X100V is also a little gem. I really like it. But I also own 2 Pen-f, an EM5 III, a GM5 and from Fuji, an XT4. That's a lot and my wife is starting to show her teeth! But it's sure, these cameras give an immense pleasure to use, and that's the main thing.
@@ducmore7391 ahahahha looks like we are in the same situation. I own from FUJI: x100v, xpro3, x70 (2 copies), x30, x10, xf10, xa1, instax mini Evo. Leica: d lux 7 and x1. Olympus pen f (2 copies). Pentax q, q7, qS1 (2 copies). Ricoh GRIii, sony a6400 and RX100VI, CAnon 90d l, rebel sl1. Powershot a800. A instax wide printer and a Dji air 2S dron. And I’m sure I might be forgetting some.
So when your wife says something. You can tell here there is someone that is really crazy.
🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing!
I have exactly this setup. The only thing that makes me want to upgrade is that getting background separation is so difficult! Saving for an x pro 3 plus that new voigtlander 35mm 1.2
Oh nice set up!
I actually just sold my x100f (along with my xt20), went for a used x-t30 which has the same sensor as the x100v and paired it with the 27mm f2.8 pancake for the small x100 form factor. I actually prefer the handling of it to my x100f and with the change I have also managed to get another gorgeous fuji lens as well. The prices of the x100 cameras are silly at the moment! Beautiful cameras though.
If I didn’t already have fuji lenses I was actually going to go for an em10ii with the 17mm or the pana Leica 15mm, so totally see where you are coming from in this video!
Interesting transition! The X-Txx lines are fantastic, have some experience with the X-T20 and thought it was brill
i highly recommend using a vintage pentax k lens on this camera, i have a 50mm 1:1:9 cosina lens which is a k mount and the colours just pop so much more and it almost looks exactly like film. which is my go to substitute for shooting film
I have the latest EM10 and EM5 versions. Both brilliant cameras and great value for money.
Agreed!
I have em 4 and what it is missing is the ability to set minimum shutter speed.. I would love being able to shoot in A mode and have a fast shutter to ensure all my pics are clear..
MFT rules. There is very little to be gained going to APS-C. And MFT is generally lighter, smaller and less expensive. The lens selection is superb in variety and quality.
Well said!
Man, have the original E-M5 and it's a beautiful looking camera that still takes great photos.
I sold my x100v three months ago and got a em10 mk IV with 17mm 1.8. In total it cost me about 650 euros with the lens being new. I absolutely prefer it over the x100v. The manual focus is so much easier with the focus clutch, the files are easy to edit, colors are great and the camera generally has great functionality. I also have the pen ep7 with the 14mm 2.5 and i have to say the 17mm is the right choice here despite being larger and more expensive. between the em10 and the ep7 I think id have to recommend em10 as the evf is great but the ep7 takes better jpeg photos.
I had several Olympus 4/3 cameras before switching to m4/3. I got the original E-M1 pro followed by the E-M5II, however I am astonished by how good my recently purchased tiny Olympus "Pen" E-PL10 is!!
There is no mistake. The price goes from the market. Olympus makes good cameras end lenses. But it's just different and not the same as Fujifilm. No point to compare. Also the matrix size on M4/3 is smaller than APS-C
Fair point
i need to buy this camera before it gets expensive because of this video😅
Oh dw this camera has been popular already and is available everywhere!
Don't worry, every year there's a "micro four thirds is dead" fad on youtube, which keeps the used gear at a reasonable price :)
@@JezdziecBezNicka the ecosystem is a beautiful thing
I totally agree, I've been shooting m43 for 10 years now :)
"Physical manual focus control" well, it's still electronic focus-by-wire, with visible steps, and it can't reach the closest focusing distance.
Yes but that physical information on the top of the lens is what I'm looking for
Seeing someone under similar video say they sold their X100V and bought 2 units of Ricoh GRIII increased blood pressure a bit because it's cool they are getting people into camera market, but I wish they wouldn't send them to specific models. Cause honestly either every camera is good when you are starting off and then once you know what you want and have a specific need you can't address that cause all newcomers are buying this one specific thing. At this point I don't know if what you're doing is good or not, maybe it is cause people will realize the market is much bigger than they thought.
I hope videos like this, of which I have a few, show people how many affordable options there are available. Many new cameras from Fuji, Sony or Canon are $1,500+ just for the body and too many newcomers think they must spend lots of money. Knowing these cameras are available for much less money means newcomers will consider the vast used market more, rather than jumping into a new camera right away
@@GeorgeHolden Thanks for the reply! I respect that and probably M43 users can benefit from a boost to popularity unlike people who got priced out of Ricoh and Fuji when they got propelled into premium tier. I watched your other video on street photography since my original comment where you speak more broadly on the number of choices and I think this is good. To the viewers I'd advice to watch it or just know that other than EM-10 there are other similar cameras like rangefinder styled GX series, and also E-P5, E-P7 that take gorgeous JPEGs.
Thanks so much for sharing your perspective. It's so easy to get caught up in hypes and this video grounded me a bit more.
Glad to have helped!
Before I got my hands on an X100V (used, reasonably priced) I did the „budget“ route as well, but with a X-E2 and the 23 f2.
❤ Same here I have also the Fujifilm X-E2 and the X-T1 with the 23mm and the 35mm f2 "The Fujicrons" love 💕 them both not only for street photography!! I also do landscape and dab in some urban photography.
Just bought a very old Olympus EPL 1 camera with 12mp 😊 & Sigma 60mm DN Art lens and hopefully I can get the 20mm 1.8 or from TTartistan the 23mm 1.4 manual lens .I am planning to fly to the USA with my cameras maybe I can find some MFT lenes there or even buy a new Olympus body 😊
@@taterandy3958 I sold my E2 and the 23mm after I got my X100V, however I now also have an X-T1 to which I adapted my old Minolta lenses - and am looking for a 35 f1.4. Bit of a rabbit hole 😅
@@jim_bocho True it is a big hole 🕳️ to fall into 😄 especially with vintage lenses I have also a few and use them on both of my Fujifilm cameras. I never tried the x100 series of cameras because of I want to try different focal lengths
@@taterandy3958 I start to like the combination of one very compact option where I don’t have to think about what to bring and one cheap (at least in comparison) alternative for lens experiments.
Have the same opinion but I would love to try the 90mm f2 & the 50mm f2 Fujifilm lenses just to see how what look I could get from them !?
I have the EM-10 Mk2 and a Sigma 19mm f2.8 and Olympus 45mm f1.8 that cost less than £300 in total
That's great!
If you can, give the Panasonic 20mm F1.7 (version 1) pancake lens a try. It's smaller and to my eyes has a much nicer image than the Oly 17mm.
Thanks will try!
Chuck in the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ for £140 on MPB in As New condition. Super compact and wonderful for street in decent light, a nice pairing with the 17mm F/1.8.
I keep looking out for you in Manchester on my walks but haven't spotted you yet. I was in Real Camera yesterday looking at things I shouldn't be buying :)
Using oly em10.3 with vintage lenses, photography is fun again 😊
If you really want to emulate film colour profiles, and not just Fujifilm, you want the PEN-F. Whilst it is a jpeg monster its raw will use its colour profiles in OM Workspace, where they can also be saved, stored and reloaded. Its film stock emulation capability makes Fuji look a bit silly.
I would love to try that oit
Wow! That's amazing I didn't know that, thank you for sharing ❤
I thought about getting one of these for fast handheld shots. This things IBIS is nutty!
The IBIS is fantastic, consider the Mkii for even better
You're videos are amazing.
I just got EM 10 IV but sadly I haven't got the time shoot as I'd like to.
Greetings from Mexico.
Thank you 😄
Thanks for this wonderful comparison, George.
I just want to add a even cheaper often overlooked option which is the fantastic 17mm 2,8 Pancake.
Its so small and light but still capable in the streets. On top this lens reduces the size of the setup even more.
There is a fantastic review of robin wong for more details.
With the automatic 37mm lenscap (LC-37C) it turns into a point and shoot street camera.
I would pair this lens with the EM-10 Mark 2 as it provides the 5 axis stabilisation but more importantly the electronic shutter.
I recently got the body (EM-10M2) for 80€ with a broken display cable which was easy to fix. The pancake lens you can find used for arround 90€. This is a setup which you can bring everywhere without fear and it looks fantastic. The output is just wonderful and 16Mpix are more then enought. Sorry for my poor english
Cheers
Jens
Thanks! Yes I was originally going to pickup the 2.8 version for exactly that reason but decided to go crazy and get the 1.8 😂 the manual focus abilities were also a big factor for me. Cheers!
@@GeorgeHolden Having now both the 2.8 and the 1.8 17mm prime I see myself using both very often. The pancake is still very often in use under good light but its very slow under bad lighting conditions. The 1.8 instead is blazing fast and focuses under all conditions
You can pick fujifilm xe2 and 27 2.8 lens and will be better and just the same price (without necessity to edit raw, because you have recipes inside).
Good to know!
I love my Olympus EM-5 and shooting m43.
Great to hearn
Nice comparison. Continue to use the x100f, the lead shutter with flash sync takes some of the most stunning shots.
