It’s a lovely camera. My son-in-law has just returned with mine from an arctic cruise, equipped mostly with the 14-140 lens for a ten times zoom for catching the whales etc. It’s usually fitted with a 12-32 kit lens which is compact and sharp. My daughter tells me that he took nearly 10,000 photos which will give him hours of fun editing and culling. Not sure what SD card I sent with him but suspect a 128GB micro SD with SD adapter…. but maybe not… I have a few. The GX80 is by far my most used camera of eight others, which include the iPhone, a Sony A7III, Lumix G9 and various others. As far as sexy cameras go, my Olympus E-M10 MkII is up there along with the Leica D-Lux7.

Honorable mentions for compact fixed lens camera: Sony RX1R II (comparable price to the X100VI on ebay), Ricoh GR3X, Leica Q (same price as the sony RX1R II), older X100 series like the X100T because older is better, the Xtrans 2 color is amazing

i well choose a EM5iii, that thing is cheap, really pretty, tiny and pack a lot of punch for the size, you can even do wildlife with it, get it and a 75-300, then you can have a wildlife setup that you can put in your briefcase, how awesome is that

For the money, the a6700 is an excellent buy. Paired with one of the many excellent third-party e-mount primes or a Sigma 10-18 or 18-50, it's really all the camera I need. Sure, it's not "underrated" and the IBIS could be better, but it's an excellent choice for everyday photography, street photography etc. It's also a decent choice for someone starting out with wildlife or sports photography.

I was just at a conference this week and talking to the videographer (Canon shooter) about the G95 and how much fun it is to have a smaller camera that does stuff like in-body stacking and Live View Composite as a carry around camera - all for about $450 USD with warranty from the online used dealers. Build on from there!

I really am getting itchy fingers for a small camera in situations I don't feel happy about, or safe to be, with my bigger cameras.
And the thought of being able to use my plethora of lenses makes it all the more appealing.
And this is where I'd shy away from the S9, not because I need a pitchfork to go with my soapbox, but because I've invested a shed load of pennies into MFT.
As for a monopod, I'm liking mine more and more for fast moving filming situations where I don't want or can't bring a Gimbal or tripod. It's great for locked off shots and adds stability, of sorts, when used as a counterweight for moving shots.
Your sponsored monopod looks sexy with it's ease of use.😀

I also rock the gx85 with 20mm f1.7. Aside from the slow autofocus, it's a banging camera setup.
Using this combo for the past 1.5 months also has me rethinking my whole setup. I too was trying for the one camera to do it all and bought the S5 and some lenses. At the end of the day, I never brought it with me for personal photos/videos. For work, my pair of Nikon D750s do great for wedding photos (and am already invested in the primes, 24-70 & 70-200 lenses), and my GH5/GH5s cameras do great for wedding video (Nikon adapted and also invested heavily in M43 lenses). I'll probably sell my S5 and L-mount lenses and put the money back in the bank for refreshing/upgrading my aging GH5/GH5s bodies.

I'd always go for the Lumix GX9, most beautiful camera ever plus same size like the Fuji X 100 VI, (they actually look quite similar, though I find the Lumix prettier), also with the very nicest and still quiet shutter sound ever! I know it's officially supposed to be not weather sealed but I - involuntarily - tried it and found that it actually must be weather sealed (otherwise my copy should definitely be dead by now but it's alive and kicking). Add amazing image quality, impressive IBIS, quick performance, great menus - and you forget about the Fuji for good!

Affinity photo is pretty nice. The only thing missing is AI denoise, but that can be done with Topaz. Costs more upfront, but is a lifetime license, but updates only come for twelve months. Still, it works really well and in the long run is cheaper. Affinity has a six month try out period currently and Topaz has a 30 day trial if I remember correctly. So you can try it without risk.

@@analogue_cassette That's what i do in the fujifilm cameras, in-camera editing. Mostly cropping or changing a colour picture to b&w with the film simulations. Occasionally i'll use Snapseed (which is free) for straightening or adjusting the perspective, but other than that, i don't use editing software to enhance my photos. Anyone can make a bad photo look amazing in photoshop, lightroom, or similar editing software. I find these days that too many photos online look animated, or over-enhanced.

Some great suggestions here Emily! I just bought an E-P7. OMDS have them discounted to £599 currently inclusive of the 14-42 pancake lens (not that I’ve used it as have a handful of primes). I couldn’t really justify £900 for a Pen-F body only.
One other thing to mention if we’re on an alternative to Fuji topic is regardless of what you buy, spend £129 of what you save on DXO Film Pack if you’re really wedded to the film simulations.

Still waiting on the 18-40mm compact zoom from lumix though...
The 26mm f8 pancake is also a fun option set to its hyperfocal distance (everything 1.5m → ∞ is in focus) for a quick focus-free experience. (Nice for a pocketable travel companion)
7artisans also makes a nice cheap & compact manual prime (35mm f1.4 iii) for when light is lacking.

Nice video as always Emily and yes they do tend to make better value than the X100VI. Problem is many of the smaller M43 cameras have rocketed in price in recent years because they havent been updated since the PenF and GX9 iterations whereas the like of the bigger G9 and EM1 range have been. So whereas they used to be way cheaper than the bigger M43 cameras 2nd hand they are now a similar price or even way more expensive (MPB excellent cond. prices for PenF are £900+ vs G9 £500+ its nuts when the G9 is miles better but less pretty). So for me unless your must have a small camera they just dont make sense to buy anymore. I remember a few years ago buying 2nd hand a GX80/85 for just over £200 and a GX9 for just over £300 when the G9 was going for £700 best price, then it made total sense. Sorry to rain on the parade.

I grabbed my first MFT camera recently, an Olympus E-M5 mark II (Titanium edition ! absolutely beautiful, maybe the best MFT camera and you can fight me on that), which I paired with the 14mm f/2.5, the 25mm f/1.7 and the 35-100 f/4-5.6 (the two primes came with the camera in a 500€ package, I grabbed the 35-100 for 109€ on MPB later ! Absolute steal)
The camera, all the lenses + 3 batteries + a lens hood that fits all 3 lenses + ND filters + CPL + microphone + charger, all fit in a small 2L bag that I can fit at the bottom of any travel backpack. It's an outstanding camera, the lenses are great and the kit itself is super enjoyable. For travel, it's basically the perfect do-everything kit. Maybe I'll add a 45mm f/1.8 later, I don't know yet.
(I;m not selling my X100S though, that thing is beautiful and stays home)

Play your cards right and you can get an S5 II for less than a Fuji X100VI, although finding a lens for £101 miiiiight be a bit of a stretch (if we use the Like New pricing on MPB, which has them at £1,499). If one were to get an excellent condition S5 II from MPB, that budget increases to £181 for a lens at the current price of £1,419. Not quite as compact though. It's kind of scary how a camera that just a few years ago was relatively affordable in Canada (the X100IV was around the $1,600 CAD mark) is so expensive nowadays (X100VI is around $2,200 CAD brand new)

Instead the PEN F a E-P7 would be an option. Not as sexy but still beautiful and it starts at 599€ brand new. My last buy was a A7R and a Viltrox 40mm f2.5 380€ in total and yes it is not holding up with current cameras. A nice option for the Leica T is the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 the only aps-c lens for L mount not from Leica.

You forget one very imp thing - the now very old Leica Type 701 doesn't have any kind of EVF/OVF - there's no viewfinder, just the silly display. Good luck with that - into blazing sunlight. Have had 2 cameras into the past without viewfinder, it pretty just sucks. The S9 doesn't have any EVF as well - and very limited external controls. No comparsion to a classic X100 series. Sensor size isn't (always) everything.

Great video, but for the silly S9 part - boo!! hiss!! You had a good selection of alternatives in bodies and lenses but, the amazing thing - as most MFT people know - is that you could have made this video twice as long by adding some of the Olympus PEN series cameras and several other excellent and compact lenses. One note - the PEN F - at least int the good old US of A is now running above $1,300 in excellent condition from MPB. I think it's been "discovered" but those looking for a Fuji X100 alternative. Again, great video but for the S9 which is a silly, silly stills camera. 🙂

The killer feature of the x100vi is 1. Leaf shutter, 2. Range finder style evf, 3. Apsc crop factor 1.5 sensor… the lumix has none of these… at least not the gx8, which was the first one you recommend. If you don’t know, or appreciate especially the leaf shutter and evf, then you are not the audience for the X100 series

If you want a luxury option, what about the Olympus Pen-F for about a thousand, with 500 to spend on a lens of your choice (I would recommend the Olympus 17 mm f/1.8, or if you want more flexibility, the Olympus 14-150 mm).

Great call. For me, I want hybrid function and I've ignored it as it's apparently not very good for video. Oh and I don't have the budget.

Great, now all those listed options just doubled in value. 🤣 Just goes to show that for stills, sensor tech has been flatlined for at least 5 years. All of these cameras can create stunning images.

Question if i may - If one is looking for a very good image quality and decently fast focusing 35-40mm range equivalent prime, price no concern, would you still recommend the Panasonic 20mm f1.7? Or would the Pano mid range zoom be the sharper option? Thanks

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  57 минут назад

Good question! I think that lens is plenty sharp, but it is notoriously one of the slower ones in terms of focusing. I find it more than usable for my needs like street photography for example, but if fast AF is a priority, then something a bit fancier might do the job. The lumix leica lenses are superb, I have the 15mm and the 25mm and they're both excellent

All the alternative videos on the Fuji x100vi have half the mega pixels which makes me wonder how can that be classified as an alternative, you could just throw any smart phone camera on this list

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Час назад

The megapixels on the x100vi are primarily there so you can crop in and fake different focal lengths, as it's a fixed lens camera which can be quite limiting.
If you have an interchangeable lens camera, like most in this list, it's much less important, as instead of cropping into the megapixels, you can just put a different lens on it. Also megapixels really don't mean much. 4k for example is only 8mp. So a 20mp or even 16mp camera is more than enough for pretty much everything imo! Sensor size, lens quality, and form factor are much more important (which is why no smart phone is included in this list)

Not every camera goes up in price because someone makes a youtube video! Only a minority of people watch youtube. Lots of people think that if someone promotes a camera or lens on youtube, that the price will go up or it'll get sold out, but that's a delusion, its not reality.

    • @rokiesato

@@reflux043 tbf, they might have gotten the camera at a low price about 1-2 years before the video came out, because prices had already changed.
