      Indeed. Would require a workaround, which actually gives great results. Jimmy uses it. SM2 adapter in hot shoe, a shock reduction adapter. Mount an audio recorder like LS P4 on 1/4 screw of SM2. LS P4 has bidirectional mics, and another mic for bass frequency. Can record sound from 180 degree, to a narrower area like shot gun.

      I don't need 4K or a microphone. I am a photographer not a filmmaker.
      I will take just as good pictures with OMD-10 mark 1 as with my mark 3. Even with an old Pentax K
      But I admit that on the IV there are some interesting functions.

    Very nice introductory review of the OMD-10 Mk IV. The out-of-camera JPG's look as good to me as ever. I pretty much stopped using RAW just for the ease of use and savings of time (except in special occasions). Modern Oly JPG's have always been excellent throughout their camera line. Finally auto-panorama ! Currently I have to switch to my iPhone when I want a panorama, such a shame. Does it has other auto-composition in-camera options ? I think some important ones are : auto-focus-stacking for macro, good auto-HDR, night-mode (at least like the one on iPhones). There is no need to make big changes in a good product. I also prefer the tilt screen and coming from a EM10 v1 this new 5 axis stabilization and better grip are truly welcome, and USB charging, it is a great travel camera 👏🏻

    Great review, Peter. I know what you mean about maybe choosing it over the e-m5 iii for causal photography. 100grams lighter and smaller is very tempting, especially with the new flip down screen. I would seriously consider using it but the lack of mic jack kills it for me. Sometimes I like to start vlogging my photowalks at random so I need the mic jack.

    Sounds really interesting. Reading on the Oly website it sounds like this is a new sensor. No phase detect but takes the contrast AF from the EM1X and improves on it.
    Quote from the website "The moving subject tracking algorithm has been completely redesigned based on the pro use OM-D E-M1X contrast AF. It utilizes the high precision focusing of contrast AF while significantly improving tracking precision for moving subjects. This feature makes it possible to achieve high precision focusing on moving children."
    This is probably possible because of that new processor. I still think there's a new sensor coming in the next EM1X

    Speaking of the "bump-out" grips on modern cameras -- my digital camera is a Panasonic LUMIX G85 -- so it has a "medium" grip -- definitely larger than the new EM10 -- but not as large as some of the latest full-frame cameras. But I collect and use old cameras -- and up until the late 1970's (with a few exceptions), there was no bump-out grip on 35mm SLRs or rangefinder cameras. And I must say that I really have no problem using them due to no grip. *BUT* I have noticed that with my G85 when I am just holding it in my right hand walking around looking for a shot, holding the camera by the grip feels *very* secure -- but doing the same thing with those older no-grip cameras it does feel much more like the camera could easily slip out of my hand.

    • @edfrancis66
      @edfrancis66 4 года назад

      IMO the no (or small) grip worked well for SLRs with manual wind levers. I preferred to have the base of my thumb up against the back of the camera (there were no buttons and dials there back then!). My first SLR (Contax 159) had a slight grip. The motor drive that I got later had a much larger one, and I held that like modern DSLRs with larger grips. The late-80s Canon T90 was probably the granddaddy of current camera design, and that had a large grip -- built in motor drive, no manual wind lever.

    Great video, Peter. As a shooter of the E-M10 Mk. III, and as someone who has been watching Olympus for a long time, I think this was The Right Thing to Do. It is a revolutionary improvement in the E-M10 series, as opposed to the incremental stuff that has slowly been rolling out for the past several years. I almost wish I was buying now, instead of 2 years ago.
    I HAVE noticed that the C-AF on my III lets me down every time I need it, and that the eye detection is weak as well. I would have settled for big improvements on those two things, but the other things really make this a compelling package.
    That kit lens is really good, too. I brought my III and the pancake zoom with me on a motorcycle trip last weekend; it fit nicely in the tank bag and was more capable than anything else of that size I could have brought.

    • @lorenschwiderski
      @lorenschwiderski 4 года назад

      Yes. Just make the EM5 mark III and sell it for $699 for body. I got my EM10 mark II for $349, I believe it was, with the 14-42mm R II lens, which is decent. It is metal - and feels like it - nice cold steel. With the 20MP there may be more room to crop, and the ISO performance--- well I don't know, maybe better. With Canon selling M50 kits, with bad, and SD card for $499 on sales, I am not sure Olympus will be selling all that much. Sony, which has the marketing has the a6100 for $650 for body. Then there is Nikon and Fujifilm to deal with. Really, with JIP taking over Olympus, I just don't see a future..... Will JIP continue with low end? The EM1 and EM5 is really all that is needed, if sold at competative prices. Yes, I know IBIS and all that stuff, but lens stabilization works too. MFT may continue as video / vloggers choice of tool.... but alas, more competition there as well.

    I really think that JPEGs are underrated. They are just so good out of the camera for Olympus, that there is only a 10% adjustment you have to do to get nice images. Obviously if you start shooting in difficult lighting conditions, you need the raw files, but the point of photography is to find good light. Coming home from a trip with a card full images having to edit every single one for personal use is just a huge burden. You see the images in the camera, and then you go download the RAW files, and you have to do 90% of the editing work just to get to where the JPEGs were. Also don't forget most photographers are not pro, they are at best prosumers, and most will loose interest after editing 10 images :P . For every professional photographer that earns a living from this there are 9 who do it for pleasure

    • @Biosynchro
      @Biosynchro 4 года назад +2

      I am very annoyed that Olympus still uses JPEG and doesn't offer something like JP2K or HEIF. Curves help but they are not the solution. The idea is to make RAW redundant. I don't want to do any post processing to my photos. It's a waste of time. But, modern cameras, especially those by Fuji, are helping in that direction.

    I'm as critical with this camera as I was (and still am) with the E-M5 Mk III - too expensive for an entry-level camera. [Edit: Okay, not as expensive as I first thought, I only saw the price including the EZ kit lens. Still, not really cheap.] And I don't think that this will replace your E-M5 Mk III for everyday shooting - no weather sealing, and last I've heard Finnland is not that much better when it comes to rain as, say, England … ;-)
    That said, I totally agree with you that the E-M10 Mk II is actually a nice camera. I bought one used some weeks ago, and I find it very liberating (because it was so cheap I just don't worry about weather sealing - if it goes bust, I don't lose much money ;-)). I found even the 16 MP to be practical, but my Pen F has the edge when it comes to details.

      @c.augustin 4 года назад

      @@ForsgardPeter It would be interesting how it goes with the E-M10 Mk IV. Maybe combined with a weather sealed lens it is just "good enough" for the usual conditions - we didn't have weather sealed cameras in the past, and it worked (not in heavy rain, but most of the time). I might still go E-M5 Mk III at some point in the future (to replace my Pen F).

Not for the features, but for the newer sensor and the 20 MP (instead of 16 MP), but that's personal.

    I agree, I found the E-M10 II is better than the III. That was a nice detail you included. I'm also very happy to see on the specs, an unlimited buffer with mechanical shutter. Really if I get the E-M5 III it will be for video using Phase detection and mic jack. Pro capture mode is nice but if the the E-M10 IV give you 15fps electronic shutter, Pro capture isn't as important to me. Glad to hear that contrast detection is improved with C-AF. I too rarely used C-AF and found contrast detection pretty reliable. Interesting compromises between the E-M10 and E-M5. I'm sure it will be going for $599 on sale fairly quickly and that's a $400 difference from the E-M5 III. There are definitely some nice updates and some things I hit the limit with my Mark II that should not be an issue with the IV. I'm torn but there is one more lens I want to get for my kit and I'm not sure if the $400 difference will affect how soon I get that lens.

    The 20MP sensor seems to be the one from the PEN-F which is the only other camera that had a 20MP sensor without phase detection. - With the newer Truepic VIII processor (PEN-F had Truepic VII), this looks like a great replacement for the PEN-F. - I won't be surprised if Olympus repackages the sensor and processor into a PEN-F housing to appeal to some more users. - That would probably not cost them very much in development (better IBIS?) but hopefully shift some more units to make them more profitable.

    The E-M10 IV teaches me how to get round the custom menu distractions on the E-M10 II. The Mark IV Super Control Panel has all the entries I need, vital on Sandra's 60th birthday for her portrait shot requests against the sunset. Increased resolution makes 33x23 inch enlargements less critical than those from the Mark II. I have no problems with the audio. Using 4K takes enormous amounts of time on my existing laptops, but I have succeeded with my early tries.

It seemed the MKIII was "dumbed down" compared to the MKII. After buying a €19 aluminum grip from China, the E-M10 MKII fits perfectly in my hand. I'm wondering... Other than the screen difference, how does this new MKIV compare to the MKII? If I remember the MKII has a different processor and sensor, but the image quality difference wasn't really noticed (?).

    Sadly I ended up with the neutered E-M10 Mark III, which could be sorted via Firmware. The only UI neutered Olympus camera in the series and the successor quickly does a U-turn clearly highlighting that the beginner shit was a mistake (it clearly was). I got a good deal on the E-M10 MK III so it's not all bad, but burying some of the shit in a dedicated menu was a stupid move and the total lack of custom profile settings is a big no (not even one). I came from a Nikon D7200 which had great C-AF (easily handling photography of low flying (old skool) aeroplanes) but even that APS-C camera was kind of bulky in comparison (especially lenses). The CDAF on the EM10s (not the MK4 of course), is absolutely shocking beyond belief... so much so that I'd say it's defective and unfit for purpose. For stills though, the EM10, much like Olympus' other cameras, does a great job. It annoys me that CDAF is practically unusable.

      I agree. The mark III was a slap in the face of users and I didn’t upgrade so they got no business from me. I really dislike their attitude and removing features via software and calling the camera a beginner model. It was a bad move, but apparently now an E-M 10 Mk III “S” model has appeared on the Asian market with the features restored according to dpreview.
      But now that the camera division is sold out to RIP it might just get worse with the Olympus brand and I have no reason at all to upgrade...
