    The Olympus OM system came out in 1972, not in the 80s. I brought the first one that came to my town worked the hell out of it I still have it works just as well today. Lots of dings, and scracthes which says something about Olympus quality. The one objection pros had with the OM 1 was the flash synchs at 1/60 of a second which sometimes allowed "ghost imaging" . It had to do with the curtain running from left to right a longer run. Nikon ran up, and down shorter run allowing a 1/125 of a second.
    This was explained to me by Yoshihisa Maitani Olympus design genius whom I had the privilege to meet. I have never used anything but Olympus. I subscribed your are becoming a favorite of mine great reviews.

    I have been taking photography seriously for the past 37 years, and have owned both Olympus (OM) and professional Nikon systems. Recently, I took a punt on the OM-D E-M Mk III - to run alongside the Nikon cameras - just to see if Micro Four Thirds was all that it is claimed to be.
    Small, light, and a joy to use when out taking photographs for the sake of doing so, I never leave home without it. Image quality is easily good enough up to A2 prints at normal viewing distances, and the in-camera Art Filters and Advanced Photo modes are fun to use. Add excellent image stabilisation into the mix and high ISO performance is less of an issue.

    Nice review and it makes me glad I bought the EM10 Mk3.......After 25 years with digital fixed lens cameras I finally went for the EM10 Mk3 with a 12-150 lens too and only last night I got the 7mm ultra wide angle on EBAY.
    I still have my Fuji S4500 with the16mp and 30X zoom so this one will be a bit different with the ability to use any 4/3 lens around.

    I had a D7200 but got rid of it last year. I spent some time without a camera, but wanted to get back into photography. I recently saw a sweet deal with the OM-D E-M10 Mark III with 2 lenses (and the very good 45mm 1.8 for free - so 3 lenses in total) for an incredible £500. The camera menu system is a little neutered compared to how the old OM-D E-M10s and I'm not sure if any of the menus have had tweaks in firmware updates since the Mark III was released, but I do know that Olympus added back the remote flash capability because a lot of folks were annoyed that that was removed.

    The lack of weather sealing and that of a fully articulated screen tilts the balance in favour of EM-5 mark II, in my honest opinion!!! But then that's just me!!! Good review though except for the fact that the lack of a fully articulated screen was nit mentioned here. For some people who does You-tube videos all on their own, this is a deal breaker!!!

    Nice review! How close would you say the EM10iii is to the PEN-F? Looks like a good few new options. I think there is a lot of crossover at the moment and can be a bit confusing. What lens were you using - is it the 25mm 1.2 PRO?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад +1

      It Genetics Limited Well, I think any OM-D cameras are different to Pen F because of the form factor, Pen F has the rangefinder-styling with the EVF on the side instead of inside the housing on top and in the middle of the camera, more of the traditional SLR profile. In terms of features, I think the Pen F is closer to EM-5 minus the weather seal but prettier and includes a higher 20mp sensor, just like the EM-1 II. EM-10 III is unique and its feature set/manual system is gearing for beginners and casual shooters. But I found it’s quite a compelling camera to shoot, even as a professional.

      Hello again,
      Now i have been playing around with my beloved camera for some time, and i have red up on what different settings do, kinda...
      One thing i have some problems with is focusing and getting shard pictures. Im using the 14-42mm kit lens and can get some really sharp pictures in daylight. But when it is getting dim and/or inside if i have auto-ISO the camera often set the iso to 6400 and that what i think makes all the pictures note so sharp as i want to.
      Do you have any tips or video on this so i can learn more on how to get nice pictures? :D
      Thanks again!!!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад +1

      Hi Eric, thanks for getting back. No problem. Well, like any camera, no matter which brand it is, when shooting at high ISO, you will get 'mushy' photos. I tend to reserve this setting for emergency. Kit lens has a much smaller aperture so it's hard to not use high ISO. The only workaround is either to slow your shutter and lower the ISO setting, which is totally fine with the stabilisation of this camera. Or you can get a faster (bigger aperture) lens. Kit lens aren't really great for low light photography and hence the reason. If you are photographing people, you may also consider using flash to assist too. In many cases, it's a matter of finding the 'lights'.

      Since I have been wading through all of the various models and features in the micro 4/3 world I will throw out a couple of thoughts that me help you make a decision between these two. The first major difference is the physical form of the two cameras... The Olympus handles more like a traditional DSLR,, the Panasonic is more like a rangefinder or compact Street camera type. Since both have only 16 megapixel sensors and no mic input or flip screens they're really not set up for the heavy-duty vlogger. Side by side I would probably choose the Olympus for the control setups, the grip, the viewfinder detail, the faster updated processor which will allow you to shoot Burst mode better,,and the deeper feature set with things like perspective correction...a lot of little things can add up... The GX is, no doubt, well made.. great little machine... You probably are safe either way..Just my 2 cents....

    • @lorenschwiderski
      @lorenschwiderski 4 года назад

      @@clintjohnson2460 The GX-85 kit is selling at a bargain basement price = a deal with two lenses. You will find it a good camera in many way, though a little more grain sets in at ISO800 or higher, but in perfect light, photos look the same or nearly the same as the Olympus cameras in same price range. The buttons and pad in back can be subject to accidental engagement, so do be careful in holding the camera. The viewer is a tad smaller than Olympus, but works OK. A great little street shooter camera. The Olympus OMD EM-10 II and PEN PL-8 bought through Adorama are my most recent buys and they are both great. All metal, unlike the newest Oly.
      My GX-85, and Olympus cameras are all great bargains -- can't go wrong. For image quality for the bucks -- dynamic range, and low price primes, my Nikon 3500 DSLR remains a great bargain between $399 and $450 for whole kit, two batteries and bag -- a steal. Mirrorless camera, it is not and thus some drawbacks. But I have them all and each has its selling points.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад

      Hi Inna :) thanks for watching our review video! Well, it depends on your preference. E-PL 8 is older and more relating to EM-10 II. So if you ask me to compare between E-PL9 and EM10 III, then my answer is EM10 III. I prefer to have a viewfinder and not relying on the back screen because sometimes it's hard to see in bright sunny day. But if you love the style of E-PL series, then it's more a personal preference. I like both styles as they are very retro. Also, E-PL 9 and EM10 III both have 4K and High Speed videos that E-PL8 don't support.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад

      Thank you for watching and also your nice comment! There's no straight answer but if you are just starting out, the EM10 III is definitely one of the best out there with all the 'iconised' menu together with AP mode which 'helps' you to get the shot you want with minimal fuss. I do enjoy using, even though I am a pro. Once you get used to the settings, you can then upgrade to a higher end model in the future. Fuji is similar but bigger and without the famous Olympus stabilisation (it's the best out there!). DSLR, is bigger and heavier. But in terms of taking photos, they are all similar and can get good shots. I just prefer the easy of use of the EM10III

    Hi! Is there any image quality difference between the EM 1 and EM 10 like Sharpness etc?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад +1

      Hey Harmon, thanks for watching our review. Well, if you are comparing it with EM1 Mark 1, then the new E10 Mark III is on par if not better due to the more power sensor and new firmwares. Sharpness is more to do lens itself and the perceived sharpness is more on the relationship of the sensor resolution and output size on whatever viewing media you are going to deploy. Both can get sharp images and the new EM1 Mark II has 20MP vs 16MP on the EM10 III which will mean that it will look slightly sharper depends on the output size (screen, resolution or print media/size). So sharpness isn’t an easy thing to say but as a professional travel documentary and wedding photographer, sharpness isn’t always a key thing. In any case, if you only looking at sharpness, usually, a higher megapixel sensor will yield a more ‘detail’ photo in the end.

    correct me if I'm wrong, but a big feature difference for many is the 5 has an articulating screen, great for self blogging because you can see yourself, the 10 has a flip screen, you can't see yourself blog. The 5 also has a headphone jack if you use the vertical grip. The 10 has a built in flash, the 5 does not. The 5 is weather sealed, the 10 is not. good review!

      Thanks for watching :) Yes, I genuinely love my EM5 II and I've been a big fan of it since the original, no doubt that I will get the Mark III when it comes out but as I do a little bit of a casual 4K filming these days, I reason it being more 'curren't than the EM5 II. Photographically, I think the EM5 II is more capable and better featured, though the new EM10 III is faster due to the new processor. But I use my EM1 II to film anyway, this is my review on the EM10 III :)

    Very enjoyable review, thank you. I have an E-M10 Mark III (amongst other OM-Ds!) and agree that its increased resemblance to the E-M5 Mark II's styling makes it very attractive looking indeed. One thing I have to disagree with though, is that to me it doesn't feel more solid than the E-M5 Mark II, just almost as solid(!) - it does feel more solid than its own predecessor, the E-M10 Mark II, though. Actually this is quite surprising, because the Mark III is actually the first OM-D with a polycarbonate top and base plate instead of metal - but luckily Olympus has used such a high quality polycarbonate construction that it doesn't look or feel "cheap" in any way. The previous E-M10 Mark II had quite a thin-feeling metal construction unlike the other OM-D models (very solid cast metal for them) and I think that's the reason the Mark III feels better than the E-M10 Mark II, but the E-M5 Mark II feels solid as a rock and is heavier than either of the E-M10 variants. Look really closely at the front of the E-M10 Mark III and you will eventually see the really fine moulding lines of its polycarbonate covers - it also feels warmer because of this (the inset brushed-effect panels are metal or metal-plated though and of course the dials are still metal). I suspect that the reason you can feel the sensor movement more easily is that he construction of the body doesn't damp the resonances quite as effectively.The Mark III is easily the friendliest OM-D or Pen ever for newcomers to the system, due to the graphical interface - incidentally you can also select the individual modes in the AP mode (and Art mode etc.) by touching the icons across the bottom of the screen, as well as by selecting them with dials and buttons. The menu system of the camera is also less complex than that of all the other OM-D models, being shorter, which will please many new users - though unfortunately this has been achieved by leaving out rather a lot of configuration choices that some existing Olympus users will have previously found very useful and will miss.One caveat about the AP mode is that it generally only allows itself to be used in Program mode - usually shiftable at least, but not in all the available modes within it. It also tends to preset certain settings when you first turn the mode dial to it (the AF points, face detection, picture style etc.) which you can override to your preference and it will remember your changes - until you leave the AP mode position; it will be reset to the defaults again when you next come back. Unfortunately some settings cannot be overridden in AP mode though - the noise filter for example - it's always on standard - and you cannot turn off the setting that leaves warm colour casts in AWB under artificial light in AP mode. Certain modes like Live Composite and Focus Bracketing are considerably simplified compared with other OM-D models (though Live Composite also lives on in its "full fat" version in M mode; however, Focus Bracketing is not available elsewhere). Frustratingly, exposure bracketing and silent shutter are NOT available anywhere other than in AP mode, so are effectively limited to being used in program exposure only.So, there are pros and cons with this new model, due to the new approach it is taking. I am sure it will very effectively attract some new users to the system who may have found the other OM-D cameras too complex in their user interface. The E-M10 Mark II remains available for now at a lower price than the Mark II, and has nearly all of the features (and complexity) of the E-M5 Mark II, and as you say, that latter model is now pretty near in price to the Mark III, so there's a good wide choice for everyone!

      Wow, thanks for spending time watching our review and comment! Also you definitely broke the record for being the most detailed feedback ever since our channel started 11 months ago! Yes, there are some valid points indeed. The Mark III does use polycarbonate top and bottom plates but so are many bigger cameras these days to save weight (and costs). As a beginner camera, certain presets doesn't do any harm at all and if they 'out grow' them, they can move on to semi or full auto for more precise controls. Those are starting points. I do love the EM-5 II and still a great camera in my opinion, though these days, I use EM1 II for most of my work and the EM-5 II is now a backup/casual family walk around camera :) Thanks again and hope you subscribe as we have many more interesting Olympus stuff coming :)

      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад

      Hey Karl, thanks for watching!! Much appreciated your support! Well, I think all OM-D cameras are very well put together and I can say that EM10 III is better built than E-PL7 and a little heavier, even though it uses polycarbonate top and bottom plates. Feels solid enough to rival EM-5 and EM-1 minus the weather seal. It should last you a few years, just try not to crop it, the flip out screen or any similar system is not as solid as fixed screen, though it adds flexibility.

      Well, it's just a recorder and you will record a separate sound file that you will need to sync back during edit. Not a huge problem. Or you can use the LS-P1 and a lav mic for even better result, especially with strong wind or in a noisy environment.

      The background music is loud and distracting, that's for sure, and i still believe that the mic picks up a lot of background noise (like at the park, from 8:11 you can hear birds chirping, kids from far away way louder than you should hear them) the combination of the two got me triggered. Also the combination of the two requires more focus from non native english speakers (like myself, with better audio i wouldn't have any issues). Will send you a mail on this.

      Farith Jamli hey hey! Thanks for watching!! Well, how serious are you planning on videoing? If you are leaning more towards video, GX85 may have a few more tricks in that department. Farith Jamli To me it is, since Olympus has more funky features that allows you to take some awesome shots with easy, especially with EM10. But if you like to have more options in the video department, Panasonic is slightly (only slightly) better but in terms of quality, Panasonic video has higher contrast and Olympus, in my opinion, has better colours.

    • @FarithJamli
      @FarithJamli 6 лет назад +1

      Red35 Photography Thank you for your reply. I suppose I should take G85 then because Olympus i just fell in love with the stabilization. Thanks Christopher! In fact, we shoot everything Olympus :) Mostly unless stated otherwise. Since we switched to 4K recording, we have been using OM-D E-M1 Mark II and various lenses. In most cases, the EM-10 III will shoot sharp 4K and 1080 videos just like its bigger brother minus some manual options since it's still an entry level camera but once you get used to it, it's good for future upgrade. EM-10 is very easy to use and mostly automated and JPG colours are nice and pleasing to most :)

    • @yukonchris

      I've been shooting Olympus for a long time - D-500L, E-330, E-30, and more recently OM-D E-M1 (original). I even own a couple OM-1s. I also shoot Canon with a 7D kit, although it's been gathering dust almost continuously since I purchased the E-M1 some time ago. I prefer the handing, interface, size, weight, and image quality from the Olympus, which rather relegates the Canon to my storage cupboard.
      What I noticed in your video was the beautiful focus falloff in some of your shots. I was wondering if you were perhaps employing any of the new prime pro lenses while filming it (17mm or 25mm)? I find myself using the 12-40mm Pro or the 40-150mm Pro, most often, but the 17mm 1.2 and the 45mm 1.2 are really drawing my attention of late.

    I am choosing from em10mk3 and pen F. Any advice? It's time I move from my epl3

      Both are incredibly good, EM10 III is newer and has 4K shooting, but only 16Mp, it's good, but if you want higher res, PEN-F has 20Mp but only shoots 1080p I love both.

    Nice review, but I'd have preferred if you'd used the electronic zoom kit lens that comes with it for testing. Bit unfair to sing the virtues of it being an entry level camera then use a lens that costs £400 more than the body. :)

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад

      Thanks Gary!! Much appreciated your comment indeed. Well, first, Olympus didn't send me the kit lens and I don't have any in my collection (a downside of being a pro LOL). But I highlighted the point of the EM10 III can grow with your photography and it's a nice examples that any potential buyers can see that this body, even though it's an entry level camera, can mate to much more expensive and quality lenses and still take brilliant pictures and videos. This camera can last for years of service :) Have a nice day!

      That's fair. I'll be upgrading to this from my older E-P3 from 2012 which I'm still very fond of. I wanted something to take away with me that was lighter than my 7D and 24-105 and It's served me well on my trips to Italy. I take a lot of street photography when it's not often the brightest and I think I'd be better served by the upgraded image stabilisation. I have the older 14-42 manual zoom and have been wondering about the comparison between that and the electronic version. Bit worried about it being too laggy when I need to compose quickly. These are my street photos taken with the E-P3 if you'd be interested in having a look. www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LeitmotifCreations

      Understood. You got some pretty images! Thanks for sharing. In terms of lens, the manual zoom will always be 'faster' for composition because I had the other EZ lens before when I bought my EM-5 way back. It was smooth for videoing but if you want quick zoom action, then you can pretty much forget it. It depends on if you want to do a bit of videoing with that EZ feature :)

      Pana ist more popular, but in my eyes oly is much better in Photo.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching :) Well, I can tell you that the EM10 III feels much more solid than Lumix G80, and heavier due to the extended use of metal, and this is true to all OM-D and Pen F cameras, quality just shines above Lumix cameras, in my opinion. I also like Olympus' colours too and if you are more of a photographer than videographer, Olympus is a better choice still :)

    m10 mIII or dmc-g81? in terms of picture quality and focus speed, especially due to the price difference. Thanks

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 5 лет назад

      Well, EM10 III is a newer camera compare to G81. AF is quicker because the G81 is more of a EM10 II rival than the EM10 III. The EM10 III also has the latest TruPic VIII processor which helps AF speeds and overall performances. Build quality is, to me at least, much better with Olympus than Panasonic, in general, apart from the top end cameras.

    • @ronaldyudoadityo8192
      @ronaldyudoadityo8192 5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your reply. I thought G81 is superior to EM10 III. & thats what I thought regarding newer camera, im sure it has few advantages against older camera, thats why I am really considering EM10 III. Well I am beginner anyway, but wouldnt mind to have more than basic camera. For now what I dont like is the handling, it is a bit too small for my hand. Is there a way to fix that? And 1 last thing, for sure I will buy the 40-150 pro (if I ended with EM10 III), even though its big, but I love to hv the option to shoot 300mm

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography 5 лет назад

      Hi Wai, thanks for watching our video. Well, spec to spec, if your focus is photos, EM5 II is still a better camera as it has more features than EM10 III and in particular if you want to take control of absolutely everything. Though EM10 III is a much newer camera and EM5 II is due for an update sometime this year. EM5 II also has a metal body and weather sealed. Even when the EM5 Iii is out, the price will be a lot more than the current price simply because the current model has been out for a little while. Having said that, it's still a very capable camera that won't disappoint people and those colours are just lovely!
