My girlfriend bought this camera but has no idea how to use cameras 🤣. These videos helped me teach her how to use it , thanks a lot! Shoot, now I want to get into photography now haha.
At the risk of being redundant with other commenters, I’m compelled to say thank you for your willingness to share your expertise with the Olympus E-M10 Mark II. This series of videos is invaluable. I’m brand new to digital photography and just fell upon a used Olympus E-M10 Mark II. I’m looking forward to having some fun with it and can’t imagine having a meaningful experience without first learning about it from you. You’re a natural born teacher. Great job. If Olympus isn’t compensating you in some way, they should. New subscriber. Keep em coming!
Thanks so much for the kind feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to write. It's a great camera and I want to show people they can take great pictures with it once they understand how to use it.
May I just add that these are excellent videos. Manuals, even the seemingly standard 300 page + items, are of generally limited value. I trust my my hunch is incorrect, however I very much doubt if Olympus pay Rob one cent. He deserves many thanks from Olympus users for making their photography journeys more enjoyable and productive.
I know a lot of people have said this already, but these are honestly the most helpful vidoes on photography I've seen. Thank you for taking the time to make them. You're a natural educator
For those with the newer E-M10 Mk.3, it's worth buying David Thorpe's book "The Olympus E-M10 MkIII Menu System Simplified". Do NOT buy the Kindle e-book version, as it isn't well formatted. Go for the paperback! The book goes into total detail of every single menu setting available on the new E-M10 MkIII. Each setting is simply explained in plain English, as well as the pro's and con's of its use. A great book to compliment Rob's invaluable video tutorials. Rick
I have a OM-D E-M10 Mark I, this series has helped me finally get to grips with the camera and it's menus, frankly the pdf manual is terrible. The last SLR I had was back in the 1970's and everything was manual and I used to wind my own Ilford FP4 and develop my own prints too. Life is easier now, once you can get to grips with the tech. This all makes sense and I've instantly had some success with Aperture priority and getting the shot I had intended. Thank you so much. I can start really enjoying my modest camera now!
I have owned an OM-D E-M10 (original) for about 7 years (second hand from a hobbyist) and I could never really get it setup correctly. This caused me to lose interest in picking my camera up and going out to take pictures. I've read forums and watched so many videos for best practice settings and since I found your videos I now have the correct settings and it has changed my feelings about this camera and inspired me to get out and do more photography again. I've since purchased another lens (after watching your videos) and I have even picked up the Macro Extension Tube after watching one of your other videos so that I can really get everything out of my M.ZUIKO 40-150mm. Thank you for these wonderful videos, they are invaluable and were a huge help, just wish I would have found them sooner.
This may be 4 years old, but I am so glad I found your videos. I have been looking FOREVER for a how to for my E-M10 and even though its a little older than the mark II or Mark III, this is soooooooo helpful. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These videos are fantastic. I was a pro photographer till the digital revolution left me behind. Might be a bit late learning now at the age of 63, but you make things so easy to understand. Can't thank you enough. Cheers Steve UK.
I encourage Olympus to give some credit to your video's. Last year I got this camera from my father who passed away. After little time to spend I recently picked the camera up to learn more about it, and start making foto's. Your a great teacher with pleasant and clear presentation in getting to understand the basics of fotografy and the great specs this camera has to offer as a beginner❤
Hello Rob and all appreciative followers. I actually had a question I couldn't get answered by the manual or Google, but having watched the first two videos I took a look through the menus (daunting to a beginner) and solved the problem. (The Info Button was only displaying two menu options, none of them the clear screen). I could have scrubbed this comment, but thought I'd take the opportunity to share anyway. Rob, your videos are so valuable and indispensable, thank you for taking so much time and trouble to help us all. Looking forward to the rest of the videos. Thank you.
I was just given this camera, its my first digital camera and I am super new to photography so i would like to THANK YOU FOR THESE VIDEOS! Holy moly, you make starting up so much easier to get into photography as a hobby for now. i've been pushed by many people to get into it because of how I see the world through my phone camera and now you have given me the best start!!!!! Thank you so much Rob!!!!!!!!!
I have recently bought the E-M10 Mark III and even though these tutorials are for the previous model I am finding them invaluable. Rob, you are a natural teacher and should be tremendously proud of what you have achieved. I am sure that my photography will improve as a result...well done!!
I just got the OM-D E-M1 and been following yours "How to" to set it up for the first time. I love the way you describe everything, very calm and relaxed. Thank you for all the hard work you've put into making all these videos.
I bought my camera back in 2016 and have only ever used the point and click function. I decided it was time to really learn how to use it and came across these videos - wow, they are so informative and you're a natural presenter. Can't wait to start experimenting properly,
I have found your videos so helpful. I take notes and practice after each video. You are the best. I don't feel like an idiot and I feel respected as a learner. Thank You so Much.
Hi Rob, Thank you! Thank you! I just bought the Mark II, and the menu system was really daunting to deal with, then I found your videos. Please keep them coming!
Thanks Rob for this clear explanation of the Olymus E-M10 Mark II camera. I try to watch all your video's, but playing with the camera and having fun with it is the best way to learn. Your video's helps me a lot to get started!
Watched part 2 because if part 1 worked for me, then definitely I’m learning from your videos. I did put my settings based on the first video and started noticing the difference in my photos.
Rob, have just come across your videos. You clearly have a large number of very satisfied viewers. Doubtless, they will shout down the comments set out below. Please rest assured that my comments are intended to be constructive. I find that you race through the menus. I would find it to be of Significant assistance if, in the first and ? second videos, it would be a fantastic benefit if your could closely focus on the pages of detailed menus and have a coloured pointer discretely indicating each page of the menus and the sub menu items . Here, when talking about menu/function buttons, you "race" to which ? page of menu settings. Don't wish to labour the point and hopefully you have understood what I am driving at. Thanks.
Thanks. The pointer idea would be great. I just don't have the video skill set yet to easily add pointers and lines. Something I should work on. Right now it would add hours to post production which is already laborouse process. I am planning a new set of tutorials and will try to incorporate more arrows, zooming in, and highlighting. It's just a bit beyond me right now.
Hi, stumbled across your videos when I got my Olympus out of the cupboard. I have learned more from your vids than I have in the past few weeks. Explanations are clear and to the point. Thanks very much. These have inspired me to get back into the hobby. Keep 'em coming !!!!
Super helpful!!! Can't thank you enough. Very informative and easy to comprehend. Novice here and beginner on photography, with your videos, I super learned a lot already. Just got 🔥
Superb - relaxed, friendly, clear explanation. Having 2 cameras - one to record what's on the screen of the other is REALLY helpful. What's more I'd say that this movie series is of value to anyone with a digital camera (not necessarily the Olympus which Rob uses) wanting to take things further than just point and shoot using the iAuto button. Highly recommended. Thanks Rob
Thank you so much Rob. This is a fantastic tutorial on how to use this camera. I am coming from a Evolt E-520 which all those years back took me long enough to learn to use. But this camera is much, much more complicated. I would have been pretty much lost without your tutorial. Thank you again. Fabulous work.
Thanks for making this tutorial! I got stuck with the bad quality pictures. Blurry or moved and I didn't know why they where that bad. But now I'm taking really great ones! And your videos also helped my out with the different button's and options. Thanks a lot
Absolutely fantastic info and knowledge sharing. I've recently bought a Mark III but have followed the videos easily. Your delivery is easy to understand, concise and second to none. I've learned so much in a short space of time and applaud you loudly! Thanks
I've just stumbled across your videos.... They are great! Thank you. I've had my camera for a year and never known how to use it. I finally have some hope and will follow along the series to gain more of an understanding.
Thank you so much for your videos. I had taken a break from my camera and I forgot a lot of what I knew. This has been a great teaching tool for me. Being somewhat new to photography its nice having someone take the time and explain how to improve on the use of my camera and taking better shots. Keep doing these.
Rob, this is a fantastic video resource. I have just got my hands on the Olympus OMD E-M10 ii and in all honesty the menu systems are truly daunting when compared to a few others i have used. Thanks for simplifying it all. Much appreciated. Fully subscribed to your channel and looking forward to becoming a much better photographer.
Thank you so much for your videos! I'm learning things I've been trying to figure out for 10yrs!! Can't wait to take some great photos. Keep up the great work!
This is SO helpful. I was recently inspired to get back into taking pictures and learning more about my camera and these videos are teaching me so much! Can't wait to watch more :)
My SH-2 pocket travel zoom had a shutter failure - and the lens assembly spares are no longer available. I had paid for the full estimate in advance, and I was offered an E-M10 II as a replacement. It is new, but someone had already played with it, and I did a full reset. I have done the Super-Fine JPEG setting you suggested. When the battery has charged again, I will do a comparison between my surviving SH-1 and the E-M10 II on my favourite waterfront scene, intended for 33x23 inch prints.
Hands down the best, most informative tutorial I've ever seen. Awesome video! Very good explanations on what is going on in the camera, and his it all works. THANK YOU for taking the time to make this series. Liked and subscribed immediately.
It's worth noting that if you save your settings to Fn3 as you demonstrated then play around then use Fn3 to go back to the presets. If you turn the camera off, the next time you turn it on it will automatically go back to the settings prior to pushing Fn3. You will need to press Fn3 to go to the preset settings again. Great tutorial but as Rob said, get to know your camera.
Thanks for posting these videos. Had the M10 for a few years, but had to replace it, so went for the M10ii. Even though I'm familiar with the interface, your tips are very helpful. Looking forward to putting this knowledge into practice. One nitpick - the "rule of thirds" grid the camera shows is not really thirds. It's actually a "rule of phi" or golden ratio grid. I'm not sure why Olympus doesn't give both options; it seems simple enough to do. Maybe in a future upgrade.
Excellent presentation! Very comprehensive. You speak a little slowly for me. When I'm focussed I watch your videos at x1.5 speed which can be changed in RUclips settings.
Thank you! I'm glad you can speed up my videos and save some time. I wish I could get people to slow down when they are talking to me in real life. I have trouble keeping up!
Rob, I was over the moon when you mentioned my feedback about Sleep setting AND pronounced my name correctly, Joan, and not JoAnn...thanks so much for your receptive feedback from viewers. While I am still learning lots, a suggestion for another episode might be “Lenses to Consider” depending on what your viewers are photographing. You do a lot of real estate work and many of your tips are super helpful. I am interested in close up nature photos of wild flowers, mushrooms, streams, etc. Keep doing what you’re doing. Do you have a Facebook page? Best regards, Joan
Naturally, Joan, Sloan, Loan. Nobody would say SloAnn, LoAnn. I'll do some more lens videos soon. I do have that video on taking pics of flowers. Have you seen that one? Also, you should get some extension tubes.
Brilliant tutorial. Have got to know so much more about my camera. I own the Olympus EM -10 which doesn’t have a function button 3 to save to. Any tips on what I could do instead or if you have covered that somewhere else please just point me in the right direction. Thank you so much Sharon
I don't own and e-m10 (original), but you can mysets to the mode dial as well. For example, set myset1 to SCN. I believe this can be done on your camera.
Awesome tutorial! I've owned this camera 3 years and have yet to learn how to use it. I just discovered your series! WOW! Thank you!!! However, I don't see the same menus you get for instance when I push OK. Or, many of mine are greyed out and I can't access them. Also, to turn the Fstop down, mine won't go below 3.5. What am I doing wrong or did I get a defective camera and am just realizing it now. lol
Most of it works on the III and IV. Some minor things like mysets and silent shutter are different. The III and IV don't have mysets and silent shutter only works in AP mode.
In the Olympus manual (omd em10 mk ii) they use some strange lingo: The letters F G H I and use the symbol Omega (page 50). They do not explain what these mean. The manual leaves a lot of the details out to frustrate new users. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I am loving your tutorials! I can't thank you enough for creating these. Again, I am a novice, but I love taking pictures. I love this camera! I can't believe all of the features it has and you are helping me to make sense of them. I really like filming the outdoors and nature more than people, so with that being said I am wondering why you turn off the EVF auto switch? Do you look through the monitor when you are filming landscape, birds, etc....? Keep these tutorials coming! Thanks so much!
Thanks. I mainly do it in my videos because the camera I have that records the back of the screen on the em10 is too close and causes the screen to turn off and switch to the evf. On my normal photo walks, I prefer using the evf. The camera is more stable, it's easier to see and frame, and also I'm better at aiming the camera for birds in flight.
@@RobTrek Thanks for the reply. I have some awesome shots of birds and butterflies only from pure luck. I hope to get really proficient from your videos.
Really enjoy watching your videos Rob! It relaxes me and learning a lot from you. Thank you for that! Would like to have your advice on the following: I still own the first EM1 Mark I from Olympus. Is the EM1 Mark II a big improvement on the previous model?
The main improvement is in the auto-focus, especially in video. As for other features, there are a few. Hi-Res shot and pro capture are the highlights. There is some improvement in image quality and less noise, but not enough to upgrade for that alone. Battery life is much improved as well. Hope that helps.
Thank you, Rob. I’m enjoying your videos. Bought you a few cups of coffee. I’m amazed your hands are so steady👏🏽 Just wondering what kind of camera is in foreground. -mak
Rob you are talented at teaching. I washed from Part 1 to Part 3 in a roll as my starter guide for Olympus EM10 Mark II and I truly appreciate the content you put into these series. One thing I want to ask you is do you usually shoot photos from looking at the display screen on or keep it off and use the view finder? I am just a beginner and I am trying to form myself a good habit from the beginning. If you usually use the view finder to take photos, can you give some tips? Another thing I noticed is that you keep your video series focusing on settings/features instead of types of photos (landscape, portrait, macro, etc.) and I can see the reason. Learning settings can be applied to all kinds of scenarios while one type of photography can not be applied to another sometimes and people have their own preference. However, can you share some of the "ideal" settings you have found through your experience for certain conditions plus certain types of photography? For example, portrait in low light or landscape in bright light, etc. You mentioned a little about them in Part 2 but they were not the focus. After all, I believe that the best way to learn is to mimic a master piece before creating my own.
Thanks. There are so many areas of photography that I can only focus on the tools. Time to time, I do make a video in a vlog style that covers certain types of photos. I did one on flowers, a couple on macro, live composite, and long exposure night photography. As far as the viewfinder goes, it's just a matter of preference and conditions. I use the viewfinder mainly because I'm old and far-sighted. In bright sun, the viewfinder is also great for composing and reviewing pictures. Using the viewfinder also gives you more stability when holding the camera because you can use your forehead and both arms giving you 3 points of contact for better stability. Do whatever you are most comfortable with. For me it's more important to enjoy the camera and have fun. That will translate into your photographs. I see too many photos that are technically perfect but boring.
Thank you very much for your reply Rob. I will check out all your videos as I explore Olympus camera. Thank you for the tips about view finder. Please keep making these wonderful videos!
Rob, you are a great teacher... Great video. I shortlisted OMD E M10 II for an upgrade from my aged Canon 550d. I also shortlisted Fuji xt100 but Olympus has a fantastic deal going right now .. it will great if you could let me know if it still.makes sense to invest in the E-M10 II today. The price for a bundle with two lens is around 550.. please let me know your thoughts...
That's a tough call between the xt100 and e-m10-ii. I like both cameras, but prefer the overall smaller lenses on the Olympus. At this price point, it's still a great buy even almost 3 years later. If you think you'll use all of the special features of the Olympus - Live composite, focus bracketing, etc.... then don't hesitate to get it. If you think you're gonna need 4k video, panasonic g85 is a good deal right now too.
@@RobTrek thanks a ton for the reply Rob. All your videos are so valuable in growing with the camera.. I am leaning towards getting the EM10-II.. the current price point is so hard to beat...
Rob you are a legend. Pity my EM10 MkII has a malfunctioning Live View screen at the moment. Need $$$ to get up and running again. Meanwhile I’m applying these tips to my EM10.
Liz Dellar hi, would you mind telling me what problem you’re having with live view? I recently got my em10 ii and the screen seems to blink off and on...not sure if that’s normal for it
elleneda1 my screen was only working at one angle then it stopped working at all angles. The camera itself is fine, but I do like to use the live view screen so am looking forward to getting it back again.
Fantastic video as as ever, I keep watching them as a refresher every now and ahgain.. Just one question Rob, what lens would you recommend for Real Estate photography for my OM10?
Sorry for the late reply. The 9-18mm would get the job done. The 7-14mm f/2.8 pro would be best. The 8-25mm is also a great choice. I use the 7-14mm f/4 from Panasonic. It has flaring issues and wouldn't recommend it. I'm saving up for the 8-25mm.
just bought this camera in 2023, theses vids are a godsend! great stuff.
Glad you like them!
I took out this camera again after 9 years and it’s super helpful to regain my skills and refresh my memory :) Thanks a lot

0:05 I love that ON/OFF switch. Virtually identical to the original OM1. Just a lovely design detail.
Some people prefer the switch to be on the right side for one handed operation. Personally, I like the nod to their legacy film cameras.

I've had my camera for a year and never known how to use it. I finally have some hope and will follow along the series to gain more of an understanding.
Thanks. I need to continue this series. Just been short on time again.
We have the same experience kaitlin.. because of rob tutorial i learn more abt and understanding my em10.
I will thanks I have been watching your tutorials and I am slowly working through them.
Great!
Thank you so much for your videos. I had taken a break from my camera and I forgot a lot of what I knew. This has been a great teaching tool for me. Being somewhat new to photography its nice having someone take the time and explain how to improve on the use of my camera and taking better shots. Keep doing these.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your videos! I'm learning things I've been trying to figure out for 10yrs!! Can't wait to take some great photos. Keep up the great work!
You got this! Thanks.
Another FANTASTIC tutorial Rob. Olympus really should be paying you to make these videos. Thank you thank you!
Thank you!
I recently got em5 mk2 and I found these step by step tutorial really helpful. Thanks Rob
Thanks. Glad to help.
Wow, this video is SO helpful. I am a complete beginner and found this incredibly well explained. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
This is SO helpful. I was recently inspired to get back into taking pictures and learning more about my camera and these videos are teaching me so much! Can't wait to watch more :)
I'm so glad! Don't hesitate to ask any questions and be sure to join my livestreams. Thanks.
Cool. I didn't even know about the SH-2. Looked like a neat little camera. E-M10ii should be a nice upgrade.
Rob, just found your videos, and they are so helpful. Please keep up the good work!!! Olympus OMD-E10 Mark II!! 🥰
Thanks. Long live the EM10-II !
your tutorials are life saving!!! definitely subscribing. ps thanks for making these videos without any music lol
Glad you like them!
To me this is simply the best. Period.
Thanks!
Only just found these tutorials, very helpful and interesting. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I .love your videos ..I just re visited part 1 as I forgot how to set the sf mode for jpeg..and watched the whole video again and wasn't bored😆
Thanks for watching!
Thank for another great video!! I’m learning so much & I don’t feel overwhelmed with all the buttons now! Yay! Moving on to Part #3....
It's not so bad, right? Keep going!
Hands down the best, most informative tutorial I've ever seen. Awesome video! Very good explanations on what is going on in the camera, and his it all works. THANK YOU for taking the time to make this series. Liked and subscribed immediately.
Thanks for watching!
I’ll check out your flower video and look into extension tubes. Thanks!
Awesome... Brought me right up to speed... concise... helpful... with your own experiences as examples... waiting for Part 3...
Thanks for watching! Part 3 coming soon!
Thank you Rob.
Appreciate if can add time stamp for new users to go to the specific topic easily.
Not sure I have time to go back to these, so decided to just make shorter videos.
Thank you and greatly appreciate your hands-on tutorials. Learnt a lot from your videos.
Wow this is soo helpful for me who didn’t know how to manage settings of my camera, hugee thanks🙏🏻
Glad to help.
Thanks so much. I agree with other comments- great pace of explanation for new camera users. I will continue to watch the entire series.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. I will note the different camera states between on and off when it exists next time.
Thanks. I was under the impression rule of thirds was a simplified golden ration. Might discuss this a bit more later. But you are correct!
Thank you for your videos!! It is super helpful and as you said, this steps for beginners like me, are super useful!
You're so welcome!
Very useful, your video's make me understand my newly bought Olympus E-M10 Mark II and improve myself in photography! Keep on the good work!!
Thanks. Will try. Been very so busy lately.
Super bon boulot, je découvre , grâce à vous, toutes les fonctions de mon Olympus! Bonjour de Belgique et encore merci.
Thank you!
Rob,
I was over the moon when you mentioned my feedback about Sleep setting AND pronounced my name correctly, Joan, and not JoAnn...thanks so much for your receptive feedback from viewers.
Great stuff for a newbie like myself. Thanks! Can't wait to dive into the next video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great great great nothing more to say. So helpful. French fan
Thank you!
A wonderful set of videos, I have learned so much. Thank you.
Thanks. Glad you found them helpful. Stay tuned towards the end of the month for more!
What am I doing wrong or did I get a defective camera and am just realizing it now. lol
Hi. Make sure you're in "A" mode on the mode dial. The lens you have will not go below 3.5. I was using a faster lens so could go down to 2.0.
Super helpful Rob. Just finished Part I. So clear and easy to follow. Thank you!!!!
Thanks. Glad these videos are helping!
@@RobTrek just finished Part II. TIme to take some pictures!
Thank for theses. Now will all these be the same for the 3s too
Most of it works on the III and IV. Some minor things like mysets and silent shutter are different. The III and IV don't have mysets and silent shutter only works in AP mode.
Master Class. The lesson, and you too. 💁🏻♀️
In the Olympus manual (omd em10 mk ii) they use some strange lingo: The letters F G H I and use the symbol Omega (page 50). They do not explain what these mean. The manual leaves a lot of the details out to frustrate new users. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thank you!
Thank you. You helped me, finally, to understand the My Set function. 🙂
Great to hear!
Thanks great tutorial , I have this camera and the MiiiS model, love them both.
Glad it was helpful!
Great tuitional videos Rob, a real help to get started and start using all the features.
Thanks. Glad to help!
This is fab. Can't wait to go out taking pics!!
Take lots of pictures! Thanks.
Hope that helps.
thank you so much Rob 💖 really appreciate this tutorial.
Thank you, Rob. I’m enjoying your videos. Bought you a few cups of coffee. I’m amazed your hands are so steady👏🏽 Just wondering what kind of camera is in foreground.
-mak
Thanks so much for the coffee! The camera is my Olympus PenF.
Thanks a lot. I’m very interested on the HDR topic. Would it please be possible to get more in-depth?
Thanks. I'll add this to my que. I've been meaning to get back to this series.
Great vids in this beginners series, thanks for sharing the tips
Glad you like them!
Thanks! presentation is at the correct pace.
Glad it was helpful!
This is a great tutorial for beginners! Thanks.
Thanks!
Great job once again, the tip about the iso on video 1 was a life saver!
Thanks! Don't be afraid of high ISO. I go over 6400 all the time. Yes, quality is not the same but better than a blurry picture.
Ok thanks Rob I will try that setup
Let me know if you have any other questions. -Rob
Rob you are a legend. Pity my EM10 MkII has a malfunctioning Live View screen at the moment. Need $$$ to get up and running again. Meanwhile I’m applying these tips to my EM10.
Sorry to hear about your mark ii. At least you still have the mark i. Thanks!
Liz Dellar hi, would you mind telling me what problem you’re having with live view? I recently got my em10 ii and the screen seems to blink off and on...not sure if that’s normal for it
elleneda1 no that shouldn’t happen. I’d be getting it looked at straight away while it’s in warranty.
Liz Dellar Thank you for the tip! I’ll definitely get it looked at or return it.
elleneda1 my screen was only working at one angle then it stopped working at all angles.
@@RobTrek thank you so much mate, keep up the good work
very helpful Rob, thx again. Ill keep watching the rest of this series for sure.
Thanks.
Thanks for making these easy to follow tutorial videos!
Thanks. I thought these might be too simplistic, but it seems there is some interest.
