I just bought my new mark 11 and found these videos. I’m shocked you don’t work for Olympus. These are “ultimate in learning”videos. Can’t thank you enough.
I'm honestly blown away at how well you teach, I have been trying to figure these things out for so long and this series just makes it all so clear, so simply. 👍
Just Started using my omd Em 10 again and found your videos and learned more in 2 days what i have learned in last 3 years about my camera. Thanks a lot . A subscriber now :)
I purchased my OMD E-M10 Mark 2 in 2017 and have mainly taken video with it at a basic level. I stumbled across your channel and these tutorials...WOW! I wish I had seen these 3 years ago! Excellent!
I learned a lot, I now go over your video's for the second time, there is so much to learn. It's now a year later and I now understand things more easily. The first time I felt very intimidated and now I feel less intimidated and more curious and eager to learn
If you haven't discovered Rob Trek yet, you're missing out on one of the most natural teaching styles you'll experience. He doesn't rush the viewer and delivers information in sizes of bites that you can digest. I've been using my new Em5 for 6 months and have learned things watching Rob that I should have picked up by now but didn't . Thank you Rob. Keep up the excellent work.
Just got my Mark III and thanks to your tutarials (even though about Mark II) that I'd watched before buying camera, once I got it, I could immediately start shooting and find it easier to navigate through the menu, settings etc. Thanks a lot Rob! I will recommend your tutorials to my friends and all interested in getting into basics of photography.
Rob, All of your videos are awesome. I have an OMD-EM10 and have watched quite a few of your videos about that camera. You explain everything very clearly and concisely, and your videos are just plain enjoyable to watch! Many Thanks for all your work!
Thank you so much, Rob. I have been using Olympus cameras (my last: the OM20) for the first part of my life, then didn't have time for my hobby for the longest time, got lazy and used my i-phone. i'm now retired and discovered during my recent visit to Yellowstone that the i-phone really doesn't cut it. So, sticking with what i know to be a decent camera, I just got the Olympus OMD M10 II. To say it mildly, their manual stinks. And while there are any number of videos out there, they all assume you already know what the camera can do, and what all the functions stand for. You are the first and only one who starts at the very beginning. THANK YOU. you are opening a new world in cameras for me. i knew i had a good camera, and you showed me what i can do with it. You are patient, explain clearly, don't assume anything, and walk us through it! Please keep making tutorial videos. As i get further into your tutorials, i may make suggestions or ask questions.
Thanks. I think some people forget what beginner means. I have plenty of videos where I'm talking to experienced photographers but try to make beginner videos for beginners.
Have just watched Parts 1, 2 and 3 and I finally have an understanding of my wonderful camera. I tried reading the manual but none of what I was reading made sense like it did when watching you. Thank you so much
Had my E-M10 over a year, lots of fun and great travel camera. I have many years SLR film and digital experience but have just found your videos giving me a new sense of understanding of my E-M10 and some great photo tips along the way. Great Job.
Rob, I have just picked up this camera in a conscious move away from my Canon DSLR. This series has truncated my learning curve and allowed me to not feel like a numpty in a very short time.. I appreciate your knowledge and expertise, along with the considerable effort to create these videos. Thankyou sir.
Only got the camera a couple of days ago and have practiced after each tutorial. I can already see the improvements. Excellent and more helpful than you probably realise
Mate, I love these videos. Really straightforward and easy to follow along with. This is my first proper camera and until I found your series I was feeling quite intimidated by it, especially when my photographer friends and family members are throwing all kinds of advice and unfamiliar photography language at me.
Rob, as a new OM-10 Mark II owner, i’ve read the manual at least 3 times, often times with some confusion. But watching your excellent tutorials, everything about the camera makes sense! Thanks so much and please keep you videos coming!
Thanks Rob I have had my camera for a while now and I wish I had seen your videos earlier. They are fantastic and I am learning new things. I have a renewed enthusiasm to get out there and take photos.
I recently purchased an E-M10 Mark II and your beginner videos have been very helpful. Even though I am not new to photography (I used to shoot with film and do my own development and printing of photos) I am relatively new to digital photography. I am on Part 4 of your videos now and can't wait to finish the rest. The videos have given me so much more confidence in shooting with my new digital camera and enabled me to have more fun rather than being frustrated with the complexity of all the overwhelming menus and settings. Your explanations are so much better than the Olympus user manual (which I am reading cover to cover). By the way: I even watched your video where you explain why you selected the E-M10 Mark II vs. the E-M5 Mark II and found myself echoing your conclusions. Totally agree!! Not worth 2x the price $$ for my shooting needs (but I acknowledge that it maybe totally worth it for others though). Thank you for taking the time to do these tutorials and I look forward to many more. You are a natural teacher and have a great gift for explaining concepts very clearly. Love your equipment recommendation links too. Definitely adding to my wish list there. Thank you Rob!
Thank you for taking the time to write. I appreciate the kind words. I'm glad the tutorials are helping even an experienced photographer like yourself.
These beginner series are great Rob. I have mainly been shooting in manual, thinking it was sort of cheating if I used the other modes. What you are saying really is, make full use of your camera. The manufacturers put all the modes and settings in their cameras to improve our photography. If the technology is there, then use it.
Long as you understand what the camera is doing, it's not cheating. If you really want to go hardcore, you could always try full manual slr film camera with no meter. :)
@@RobTrek That where I'm at - I want to take what I learn here on the E-M10 and apply it to an old OM-10 35mm film camera that I have here. Great vids, thanks!
I cant thank you enough Rob. I had limited time to get my head around the camera and its settings ahead of taking it to hospital today to capture some images after the birth of my first child. Thanks for taking a step back to basics (for you) to help beginners like me get off on the right foot with this camera and photography in general!
Great video, and very helpful for the exposure problems I’m having with backlit subjects right now. I could do with less “OK“ and “right.“ Thank you for this video!
Hi, Rob. I find these videos really helpful. As I'm going with the progress, I am having to go back and forth as I experiment, which helps to cement the knowledge. I would like to thank you for your time and expertise: you are helping me to understand not only the camera, but photography, also. It isn't just holding a camera up and pressing a button. I find it a very technical process, and to me, who has not got a technical brain quite stressful. I look forward to session 4. Thanks again. John
Great series Rob - just got my camera a month ago, I've been taking photographs for years, but this camera has so many features and you explain everything so well, and at the right speed so I can follow with my camera. Thanks - keep up the great videos
Thank you so much for doing a beginner series. I purchased my E-M10 Mark II last month and hadn't used a "real" camera since the late 80's in a photography class in school. With only vague memories of basic terminology, I binge watched a lot of your previous E-M10 Mark II videos and still felt in over my head since my foundation is still weak. Consider me very interested in starting from scratch. I really enjoy your clear style of educating with no undercurrent of condescension or gear elitism. I second the request for accessories and lenses that don't break the bank. I'll certainly keep an eye out for the next installment.
Thank you for the very kind feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to write and thoughtful consideration. I'm working on the next video on shutter speed. :)
Rob, these series are so helpful! I’m not tech savvy at all and you are making this camera easy to understand and use. I’m looking forward to playing around with exposure compensation and HDR this weekend. I can’t wait for part 4! Thanks again
Rob thanks for these video's as just moved over to the omd 5 from dslr, try'd reading the manual to find different things and found it really hard work. Then I found your site an absolute god send. Having found you you have saved me many hours of going back and forth to the manual just to set up the camera how I like it. Keep up the great work and I look forward to learning even more from you.
Thanks for confirming HDR shuts out shutter delay. Exposure compensation was already available in my C-2500L and D-400 ZOOM, but buried in the menu then in 2000. In the film days it was called 'varying shutter speed and/or aperture'. On the pocket zooms I reduce EV(variation) to bring back color saturation, since the long zoom lenses get internal flare. The short zoom kit lenses on the E-M10 versions just about do away with the flare, hence EV=0 has proved safe for me so far. Less flare also allows me to retrieve both highlight and shadow detail in PP on the E-M10, which I cannot get back on the pocket zooms SH-1 and SH-2.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Understanding the causes to quality issues is the key to finding the solution. Sometimes it's a limitation of the gear and you have no choice but to upgrade.
As to upgrading - the E-M10 Mark II 2 lens kit is gains on the swings and losses on the round-abouts, compared to my remaining pocket zooms SH-50 and SH-1. I need the full range from 28 mm to 600 mm in cruise ship arrival- and departure videos - at what point do I change the lens? Right now the 14-150 lens is out of my reach. Thanks for telling me how to activate the digital zoom. I had not scrolled through all the Fn3 options.
Hi. Do you have the E-M10 Mark I? If so, you're best bet is to get the 75-300mm which is at 150-600 equivalent. I'm not aware of any lens that covers 28-600. Check this website for lens choices www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/lense.html
First tutorials of using this camera for beginners that actualy are for beginners. Great that you put you time and effort in this, I follow these things vids till the end. What would be something to think about, since you asked for suggestions, is giving people homework. Try to take 6 pics with bad lighting for instance, and try to beat HDR. Just an example, I am sure you can think of better homework yourself since you play with these things. Looking forward to part 4. Thanks a lot!
These are very useful. This is a very complicated camera, which I knew before purchasing. I'm not a beginner, so some of your recommendations don't work for me. For example, I think the highlight/shadow adjust assigned to a function button may be very useful. This series has been a great explanation of a camera with a lot of non intuitive functionality. Thanks.
Thanks! My eyes just aren't good enough to use some of the features in camera. I'll have to give some thought to people who have good eye site might use the camera differently.
Idea: I’m not sure if you travel but maybe a video on what gear you would bring & how you would shoot, for example, sunsets in Florida or wildlife in Alaska. (You may have done something like that & I haven’t come across it yet)
I will try and do some traveling this summer. I'm not really a wildlife photographer but sunsets are always on the list. I haven't really done any videos about what I bring with me. Funny you should mention it though, I did a vlog yesterday where I talked about it. I'm not uploading that one since I was kind of all over the place and it would have been confusing what I was talking about to begin with.
Hiya - I am so grateful for finding your page. You are helping me in so many ways with my cam. You are the best - even if it is in english. (I live in Denmark) :-)
No problem Rob, I have got a quick question if that’s ok? Just picked up the E-M10 mk2 and it’s my first real camera. I notice that there is a constant humming from the camera like a very quiet fan. Is this normal? Also the battery life seems quite short. Trying to follow along to your vids and the battery drained quite quickly. Guess it’s because the live view screen on all the time when playing with settings?
@@davidforrest7427 Hi. The humming is the sensor image stabilization and is normal. It is always on, even if you turn stabilization off. It has to stay on to hold the sensor in a static position. Battery life will drain with live view on constantly, especially if following along. You'd be lucky to get 1 hour on an Olympus original battery. When out taking pictures there are some techniques to extend battery life, but generally you should get 2 hours of shooting done, so carry spares.
So Rob......... I was really having trbl finding the histogram and getting that clear and concise reading as your live view. Anyways, I switched that back button ... the AEL/AFL and tada! Got it now. Even wrote to Peter Forsgard. You guys will just presume, I'm certain, that this is all so new to me. BTW, have you done a vid on that nasty button??? I seem to remember that you may have. Thank you for all that you do for us viewers, Rob..
Very instructive and well explained videos! Just got my hand on a secondhand EM10MII and this is so helpful! I'd love to have eiter a video on accessories (grip, uv filter) or lenses (which ones are the best to begin with!). Cheers!
Thanks for this, very useful. Perhaps you could make an episode on how to achieve sharp pictures in different settings and how to check (in preview) how sharp the pic is.
I got my hand on a Mark III this Black Friday and I'm surprised how relevant this tutorial still is. Just a few things can't be adapted, like the programming of the Fn buttons. They are far more limited on a Mk III, when it comes to their options. For example, you can't choose HDR, and the Quickmenu is now fixed on the former Fn3. There is no Fn3 on the Mk III. Nonetheless a very good tutorial series for a photography newb like me.
Rob. Can't tell you how pleased I am to have discovered your tutorials. As an old dog trying for the first time to learn new tricks these have been very helpful. On the exposure compensation video the aperture is set at 1.7. So I either missed the change in lens from the kit lens that came with my camera, 14-42mm 3.5-5.6 or I missed the instruction on how to get the aperture that open. I suspect that you are using a different lens but wanted to check.
@@RobTrek thanks again for all of your great work on these tutorials . Seems to me they must be consuming all of your time. Great work by you has led to much better understanding and significantly more enjoyment by me.
Rob, I received my Mark II a couple of days ago and have been thru Part 1 and 2, but I have the same comment- nothing happens when trying to turn what appears to the lens dial for changing the F-stop...the wheel just spins but no change on the screen...what have I missed? I have the kit lens- 12-42 mm, 3.5-5.6....
1:52 i would use a fill in flash for this example in fairness but i get what your saying about Exposure Compensation. This really would depend on the background light conditions - Would Exposure Compensation completely blow out the white background??... I think it would.
I love your explanation, just practised today with the flash on a flower and a black background, you showed in another video. I am wondering and looked for videos of you on the em 1 mk ll, but I miss them?
Hello Rob, I like the way you explain the setting very usefull for beginners like me¡¡¡¡ Could you make a video about how to use video setting? Thanks¡¡¡¡
very nice video!! It would be helpful if you make a tutorial about the wi-fi functionality in details. I am especially curious to know if live-time, live composite functions can be availed fully using my mobile as a remote!! Thanks in advance!!!!
Hi Rob, thanks for mail. do you have any separate video explaining Evie Scale? I mean on what basis it blinks? what [ - ] and [ + ] indicates for Evie scale?
Great video as usually.. You mentioned "Nothing is blinking". The red part for the highlights and the blue for the shadows. How can I set up. Which video shows that.. Otherwise congrats... Love your videos and learned a lot. Thanks
I'm very tankful for yours videos with your excellent and well understandable explanations. Have you any suggestions settings for beginners for a Wildlife Safari ? Thank you Rob.
I think for your safari, you will use your 75-300 more. the 12-100 is too short to capture animals at a great distance. As for the light changing, use the same exposure settings as in the beginner video part 1, and the focus settings used in the birds in flight. Aperture priority, lens wide open at lowest f/stop. Group focus 9 points, C-AF, face detect off, Release "Off", Shutter speed on continuous Low anti-shock, auto-iso 25600-200, and center weighted metering. For fast moving animals, try panning. You may also want to switch to shutter priority, with 1/1000sec shutter speed. Birds stick with 1/2000th. Hope that helps.
Hi Bob! Thanks for your videos Bob, i noticed that when I'm in A mode i can not control the exposure, it only appear the A and the speed, if i want to change the exposure i need to change to another setting (M,, P, S) how can i add that to my A mode? Thanks
Thank you for your videos.Very informative.Does hdr work with long exposure? Would greatly appreciate your reply.Ps.Love my mark two recently purchased.
Thanks. I haven't tried the HDR1 or HDR2 at night, but you can bracket shots and merge them later. I have a video where I did that. ruclips.net/video/MY0tAC5SPx0/видео.html
Thanks Rob, seen this 3 episodes over and over again. My english is a little bad, so i repeating every moment. I may have missed how i aktivate the silent shutter. I wonder if you could explain that slovely, and also explain when to use it and when you do not use it. Best regards. Ulf Eriksson Sweden
Rob, do you think you will be doing a segment on downloading and basic editing with the Olympus viewer 3 software that came with the camera? Also some of the prompts when reviewing photos on LCD screen can be confusing. Please consider and thank you.
Yes, I will follow up with some basic editing in Olympus Viewer. Thanks for the idea of reviewing the prompts. I never thought about doing a video for that.
I really like your videos. I've been watching them for a few months now. I like being able to set the Myset settings. But I have a question. Is there any way to save the Mysets to the SD card or maybe back them up to a computer?
I have an Olympus OMD EM10 Mark III and I have something I cannot figure out regarding exposure compensation. When I am in manual, the camera is stuck on -3 and I cannot change it at all. The dial won't move off that. I saw in an Olympus forum that this was happening to others, but Olympus has not addressed it. Do you have any info on this? Makes it really difficult to shoot in manual with this issue. Thanks!
Sorry, I don't have the Mark III so can't see for myself what is happening. However, exposure comp is disabled in Manual mode, so what you are seeing is the EV meter. If it says -3, try pointing the camera at a light bulb. If it still says -3, try slowing down the shutter speed down to 1". Also try raising the ISO to 25,600. Let me know if you see any changes. Thanks.
I have a EM10 Mark III - For the record, exposure compensation is NOT disabled in Manual mode you can actually assign this feature to either Fn1 or Fn2 button... once you have adjusted the shutter and aperture to get to correct exposure (0.0) press either Fn1 or Fn2 (which ever you assigned exposure compensation too) this will then display 4 very small green arrows on the bottom left of the screen. These are 2 sets of up and down settings. 1 for shutter the other for aperture. To adjust the exposure compensation use the directional buttons that site around the "ok" button - Hope this helps. If your still stuck at -3 and you have tried extreme lighting conditions from very bright to very dark, then there must be something wrong with camera.
Interesting, I always avoided Exposure compensation when making videos at least. It made video way worse, more noisy and such. But I never tried it with photos
Olympus should hire you and include your excellent videos with every E-M10 sale... I'm getting to really know and enjoy my camera. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!

I always try to find ways to combine features. Thanks!
Great series Rob - just got my camera a month ago, I've been taking photographs for years, but this camera has so many features and you explain everything so well, and at the right speed so I can follow with my camera. Thanks - keep up the great videos
Sorry I didn' tee your feedback sooner. Thank you!
Thanks. I'm getting around to Part 4. Just been so busy lately.
Top notch as always. A great tutorial for the absolute beginner like me. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you!
Thanks alot for the excellent explanation of this camera!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much Rob. I love my Pen F now after watching your videos!
It's a great camera! Thanks for watching!
Thanks! My calendar should clear up next week, so will be making videos again soon!
That's a great idea. Thanks! I was thinking maybe a livestream for beginners where I could answer questions in real time.
Another great video from Rob! No longer intimidated by my camera! 👏👏👏👏
Thanks again. Let me know if there is another area you'd like covered. I really haven't completed this series yet.
Thanks for watching!
Wow, so helpful. Thanks Rob!
Thank you!
I bought one E-M10 Mark II just because of these videos. #Olympus just send some share to Rob. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Olympus is like "Rob who?"
La mejor serie. Clara y precisa !! Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱
Thank you!
This is absolutely terrific!!! Thank you so much!
Glad you are enjoying the series. I'm trying to find time to make more. So busy now.
Great Video, Rob
Thanks!
Awesome stuff! This was extremely helpful! thanks again!!
Thank you! i just bought a mark 3, so a little bit diff but im learning heaps :D
Thanks. Mark 3 is awesome camera.
Thanks,really enjoying this series
Thanks for the feedback. Wasn't sure if anybody would be interested in starting from scratch.
Thanks Rob, your explanations are top notch! Really easy to understand with those nice examples.
Cheers!
Thanks!
Another great video cheers
Thanks 👍
Thanks Rob! Really love your EM10 Mk II beginner videos, looking forward to the next one! ^^
Thanks. Working on the next one!
Another excellent video Rob! I would subscribe twice if I could.
Thanks!
Great interresting vlog as always...A pleasure to whatch and follow. Rob, You are a true entrepeneur...!
Thanks, Jakob!
Brilliant videos. Thanks !!!
Thanks!
Perfect. Thanks again for advice. Love your channel.
Perfect! This is what I was looking for! Thank you so much!
Glad this helped. Thanks!
Your teachings are so helpful and easy to understand. Thank you soooooo much for helping me understand my camera, and photography in general!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks. I have a video on the back button focus if that's what you're referring too.
Nice one!
There’s no need for 2 stops, I’d marry Polina right after one stop of the exposure compensation.
Thanks!
Great job!
Thank you!
Please keep share knowledge , Thanks
Okay. Thank you!
Very instructive and well explained videos! Just got my hand on a secondhand EM10MII and this is so helpful! I'd love to have eiter a video on accessories (grip, uv filter) or lenses (which ones are the best to begin with!). Cheers!
Thank you for the feedback. Will give some thought and put something together!
Thanks!
Welcome!
Great vids
Top tips here, great guy
Thanks!
Thank you!!
Thanks for this, very useful. Perhaps you could make an episode on how to achieve sharp pictures in different settings and how to check (in preview) how sharp the pic is.
Thank you for the suggestion. I'll have to give some thought to how to present this topic. -Rob
*Special thanks to Paulina
Thanks!
Please continue to make beginner videos !
More coming soon! Thanks.
Congrats on your Mark III. Yes, unfortunately some limitations on the newer models.
Yes. My kit lens broke, so used a 25mm f/1.7. I picked up a new kit lens today!
Yes, flash fixes a lot of lighting problems.
I love your explanation, just practised today with the flash on a flower and a black background, you showed in another video. I am wondering and looked for videos of you on the em 1 mk ll, but I miss them?
Thanks. I don't have any videos specifically for the em1.ii.
Hello Rob, I like the way you explain the setting very usefull for beginners like me¡¡¡¡ Could you make a video about how to use video setting? Thanks¡¡¡¡
Thanks. Video is a bit different. I started a series for Video that I will continue over time. ruclips.net/video/DjvcEWxzTxY/видео.html
very nice video!! It would be helpful if you make a tutorial about the wi-fi functionality in details. I am especially curious to know if live-time, live composite functions can be availed fully using my mobile as a remote!! Thanks in advance!!!!
The wifi app is limited, but will try and see what I can do. Thanks for the suggestion!
Interestingly on the mk1 when you enable hdr the exposure compensation becomes disabled
Hi Rob, thanks for mail. do you have any separate video explaining Evie Scale? I mean on what basis it blinks? what [ - ] and [ + ] indicates for Evie scale?
Hi. Check this video ruclips.net/video/xkA0YuAMYGk/видео.html
Great video as usually.. You mentioned "Nothing is blinking". The red part for the highlights and the blue for the shadows. How can I set up. Which video shows that.. Otherwise congrats... Love your videos and learned
a lot. Thanks
Thanks. I have a old video on this you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/wnC6k7x94mU/видео.html
I'm very tankful for yours videos with your excellent and well understandable explanations.
Have you any suggestions settings for beginners for a Wildlife Safari ?
Thank you Rob.
Hi. I replied to your email.
Hi Bob! Thanks for your videos
Bob, i noticed that when I'm in A mode i can not control the exposure, it only appear the A and the speed, if i want to change the exposure i need to change to another setting (M,, P, S) how can i add that to my A mode?
Thanks
Go into Menu "B Button/Dial" --> Dial Function --> A . Then assign the front dial to FNo. and the rear dial to +/-.
Thanks Rob,
Is there any way to use exposure compensation in manual mode? I am using em5 ii, it works on s and a but not in manual
Hi, So Ra. I'm so sorry for the late reply. I made a video on this recently here: ruclips.net/video/kkOHItTWXtM/видео.html
Shutter mode is my next lesson! Thank you!
@@RobTrek thank you so very much!
Hi- nice video. Do you use any screen protector for the OMD EM ii LCD?
No screen protector, but thinking about getting one.
I use one and the screen seems just as responsive as it was without it. So, I definitely suggest it.
I really like your videos. I've been watching them for a few months now. I like being able to set the Myset settings. But I have a question. Is there any way to save the Mysets to the SD card or maybe back them up to a computer?
I have to find my usb cable, but some models from olympus let you save the mysets to your computer via their update software.
I use it all the time for photos. Sometimes in video.
