You did this entire video in a single shot without any cutaway edits ? You are such a natural at this presentation thing! Assigning mysets to the mode dial is a very powerful feature on the EM10mk2 that I only appreciated recently with your explaination. I remember you had mentioned that they took this away releasing the EM10mk3, quite a dealbreaker once you get used to it. Invaluable on my em1mk2 and also even my TG-5 I acquired last week!
Thanks. I started using it almost right away so when the mark iii came out, the lack of mysets was the deal breaker. Yes, pretty much a single shot. I had to cut out a few minutes where I cleared my throat or sneezed and one part where I accidently reset the myset1. I actually recorded this twice. I forgot to format my memory card on the overhead shot, so it stopped recording after 1 minute and I had to start the whole thing over.

Apart from personalisation, is there any real difference between creating these 4 Mysets and using the equivalent SCN mode determined by Olympus engineers? Are the settings documented anywhere for the SCN modes so we can see what they have actually set? Thanks
The SCN modes are not documented anywhere that I could find. That said, I looked into it once myself and found them to be rudimentary. It basically chooses a color profile and then prioritizes either shutter speed or aperture. So for people shots, it chooses portrait color profile and tries to keep the shutter speed up. Completely logical but not very adaptable. For landscapes, chooses vivid color profile and auto exposure with a priority on keeping iso low. But what if you want to do B&W? It's been a while, so I may be off a little on what is really going one, but I think you get the idea. Ultimately, it's not much better than Program mode.

It's confusing. I think because you can assign a button to be a myset, they are trying to avoid a conflict when you have the mode dial programmed to a myset.
Hi Rob, thanks for the great video! I made my sets, "street" assigned to iAuto (FN1 AEL, FN2 2xTC, FN3 multi) and "vintage manual lens" (FN1 peaking, FN2 2xTC, FN3 multi) assigned to SCN but then observed an annoying thing: the programmed FN buttons are not changing with the saved slots, only if I recall them from whithin the menu. You are correct and not doing anything wrong. The logic behind this is that because you can program a function button to a myset, it is independent of the mode dial. This discourages you from programming a function button to myset2, then turning the mode dial to iAuto(myset1). You can, but if you do, that function button is disabled. Yes. It seems you can save the "Specifications Settings" (2nd line item in the movie menu) into different custom modes (c1-c4). Other settings in the movie menu do not get saved.
Hi Rob, a great video, very informative and practical. It could be useful in relation to street photography to be able to save (with other settings) a specific focusing distance to take advantage of the deep dof of a specific lens and not have to worry about focusing (ie, Panasonic 14mm f2.5). Is it feasible on the E-M10ii? Thanks for your help.
Hi Rob. Love your tutorial. However for your 1st system i made some mistakes and my functions 1 and 3 didn't do what it was expected. I'm going to see again the all video to see what i made wrong. I will have only 2 functions. General and Sports as you did, that seems to me are the most important in the way I photograph. Sports and Portrait are self explained as you said. Thanks a lot for your tutorial and hope you will be recognized as the most valuable Olympus Educator. Stay safe
@@RobTrek The problem is the following. I understand the all process, but somehow it didn't work on my OMD-EM5II . It's really a good option to have those features on one function, but i really didn't understand what went wrong during following your video... When i call a function it din't answer to the mode I want (General or Street)...
Too bad this doesn't work on the e-m10 mark 3! If i photographing birds in flight, all adjustments must be made again and again, can't save any settings.
One thing to be aware of. • If you change some settings whilst in a MYSET and then turn the camera off, the changed settings will be retained upon switching camera back on. Get in the habit to recall MYSET (to suit the scene) on turning the camera on. This can save odd surprises of finding out photos taken in wrong settings and bit too late...
Hi Rob What ND filter you suggest for shooting the lighting shot's how many stops roughly. Also keep up the good work with the videos I think people are attracted to shooting storms a video would help as well on settings. Thanks Again from Australia
I'd start with a 5 stop variable ND filter. Just need to bring the light down to .5 sec shutter speed without stopping the aperture down past f/8. Thunderstorms are hard to make videos in. Timing being the biggest problem. Never really know when or where.
Dear Rob, Your video is extremely helpful. There is one thing I am slightly confused about. I've just set up some Mysets for the first time. I programmed them to the function dial. I've noticed that I seem to be unable to store the function button assignments. The red button on the right of the top plate is one whose function I was planning to vary across different mysets ie one touch white balance for night shooting, HDR for lanscape shooting etc etc. But it looks as if the button functionality is being stored across all mysets. Have I understood this correctly, and is there any way around it? Thank-you, Mike
I love the step by step guides Rob., I have a quick question please? I am having a problem where I set my Myset3 on S mode and after a period of inactivity the Myset switches off? Can you please advise what I should be turning on or off? I have the EM10 Mk II. I hear a slight clunck noise as this happens. Many thanks and have just bought you a few coffees as I feel I will be coming to you alot :)
Hi. The clunking sound you hear is the camera shutting off (sleep mode) and the sensor dropping on it's own weight due to the lack of power. With power on, the IBIS picks up the sensor so it floats to adjust for vibrations. When you assign a myset to "S" mode, you can activate the myset either by the menu or assign it to a button or dial. If you don't assign myset or assign it to a button, then when the camera goes to sleep, it will reset the camera back to the mode it was in before activating the myset. So for example, your camera mode dial is on "A", you assign myset3 to "S" mode, you activate myset3 and take a few pictures in "S" mode even though the mode dial is on "A". You stop taking pictures long enough for the camera to go to sleep. When it wakes up, it will go back to "A" mode completely forgetting you had myset3 activated. The way around this is to assign myset3 to the mode dial instead of a button. So if you assign myset3 to "SCN" mode, your camera will stay on myset3 even if the camera goes to sleep as long as your mode dial is on "SCN" mode. Let me know if that makes sense or if you have any other questions. Thanks. -Rob
@@RobTrek Thanks Rob, I have taken your advice and assigned it to a dial mode. I have let the camera sit for a while and it doesn't seem to switch off and lose that Myset now. I didn't use the SCN mode but chose another so i am hoping this wont make a diffference? Many thank - Are you planning on doing any videos on using a M10 MK11 with teleconverter and pro lenses at all? Cheers Mark
@@markandemmapollard6047 I'm glad that worked. Thanks for letting me know. I don't own any pro lenses that can use a teleconverter so can't make any videos about it. However, I've seen plenty of evidence that they are excellent on any m4/3 camera.
Another great tutorial Rob! Love to see your E-M10 MKII in such a used state :-) Here is my absolute frustration: I like to shoot in ART-mode, Grainy Film II, Highlights -5, Shadows +4. (kind of a Agfa APX style instead of a Kodak Tri-X style) Trying to put this in a MySet leaves the MySets greyed out. Any way around that?
Thanks. I think you can just put the camera in "P" mode, then dial in Grainy film II from the SCP. I'll make a short video on this because there are things in the "fine print" that can make this tricky.
@@RobTrek Rob, this works absolutely fine for me! Thanks so much! If you make that video, maybe something to take with it is that in SCP it takes the setting that you have set in ART mode. So if you have, for instance, selected Vintage III in ART mode, than Vintage III will be selected of you choose Vintage in SCP.
Hi Rob thanks for useful videos I have a question that I could not find the answer at first glimps; is it possible to have "myset" for differents video settinfs for example; one for lapse time and another one for 120p and another one for 30p et.c thank you hans J. Plourde
Rob, as usual very informative. I love the way you go through each setting mode in a very precise, clear and professional way. Only 1 thing missing. Color space should be Adobe RGB and not sRGB :-) One question: for sport photography shooting in jpeg rather than jpeg+raw will speed up the horsepower and camera overall performance, or no noticable changes should happen?
If shooting raw, it doesn't matter if you shoot Adobe RGB or sRGB. Adobe RGB is used in professional workflow with calibrated cameras, monitors, and printers. I always shoot sRGB since 99% of consumer level media is sRGB. For sport shooting, it only makes a difference if you are constantly overshooting the buffer. So if you press and hold the shutter for more than 5 seconds, this could be a problem. You'll have to do testing with your camera and your memory cards to see where the buffer runs out.
Brilliant advice on this video,so happy to have myset 1 and 2 assigned to the iauto and art settings on the top dial something i would never have worked out on my own with my em5 mkii
Hi Rob. Thanks for sharing this. I am using an OM-D E-M1 mark 1 with the latest firmware........ Can I ask............Do you need to do a factory reset to set the mode dial as you have shown us in the last settings that you recommend. ?..... I have followed your instructions and set "Myset1" to IAuto and it has greyed out the other three settings so I cant get into them to choose the other mode dial settings.
You shouldn't have to do a reset. As for greyed out settings, to set new mysets, you need to put the camera back into P,A,S, or M and save your settings.
Great video!! Thank you Rob! This makes those dial functions useful for something. I do have a question regarding the auto ISO setting. You set it to use the full spectrum up to 25600 ISO! Isn’t it a bit noisy? When do you shoot at 25600 ISO? Night Photography...? Keep up the great work!!
I have a problem with the Fn field in the super control panel. I am unable to set two different Fn functions for two different sets. Example : if I set : - Fn2 to AEL/AFL in the 1st set - Fn3 to magnify in the 2nd set it is still set to Fn2 for all sets.. Strange!
Hi, Gilles. Sorry for the late reply. There are too many variables here and I would need more information to give you an answer. Can you email maybe a short video of how you're setting up your camera? Maybe just use your cell phone to record what and how you're setting things, then show the problem. rob@robtrek.com Thanks.
Hi. You could use the same settings found in my birds in flight video: ruclips.net/video/E0hBOO3udIA/видео.html The only tweak I would make is you could probably get away with 1/1000th sec shutter speed.
Good morning Rob, hope you are well in this horrible time with COVID-19. In our region "LUGANO" (near Italy) with very small habitants 350'000 have 270 dead people and we over 65 have a strich ban on going out shopping. Only grocery stores, post-office and farmacie are open . In this time I have Reset all my settings in my om-d e-m 10II. Know I have customized all the basis settings in Myset 1 (iAUTO) + Birds in flight in Myset 2 (COLLAGE). Is it normal that when I turn the gear to "S" or to "A" or to "P" there are all the settings for birds in flight ? What can I do ?
Once you program the mysets, you need to change the settings in P,S, or A back to what you want. Then you can toggle between the Msyets without affecting the last settings you made in the other modes.
@@RobTrek In Myset 1 I have all my base settings, so go in A and recall myset 1, than in S and recall myset 1, than in P and recall myset 1 ? in this way ?
I know how you feel. But resist. The g85 has the articulating screen, mic jack, and optional battery grip. It would make a much more suitable b-roll and backup to the g95.
Yes, that works. Just be aware that recalling from the menu will not overide the "P,A,S,M" mode. But recalling via function button will. So P mode can revert to "A" mode if recalling from a function button if you set myset in "A" mode.
I may be missing something (hopefully) but it appears Olympus removed the Myset menu feature in the OM-D E-M10 Mark III. I have the latest Firmware upgrade?
Im trying to reset , but i cant it nothing doing when i make reset the camera. And also some settings are non editable like iso and noise reduction like that what is the reason.
Try leaving the battery out of the camera for 24 hours. That will usually reset the camera. You will know when you turn on your camera and it asked you to reset the time and date.
@@RobTrek thanks for you reply. I have done the reset. I can edit now 😃. The problem was auto mode. Once we put it in auto mode we can't edit the myset. Now im changing manually as per your video instructions. Thanks

Thanks. Unfortunately the EM10ii doesn't have a preset focus distance feature so it wouldn't be possible.
@@RobTrek Thank you very much for the info
Rob Trek is this feature available on the PenF or the EM5? Thanks again.
Stay safe
Thanks, Jota. Let me know if you have any problems after watching the video.
I don't know why they removed it in the Mark III. They also hampered it quite a bit in the EM5III.
Thanks, Vaibhav. Nice to hear from you. It's been a long time!
Hi Rob
What ND filter you suggest for shooting the lighting shot's how many stops roughly.
Also keep up the good work with the videos I think people are attracted to shooting storms a video would help as well
on settings.
Hi Mike, I tried to answer your question here: ruclips.net/video/DsPxCOZnjG8/видео.html
Let me know if you have any more questions. -Rob
Cheers
Mark
@@RobTrek That would be great. Thanks in advance :-)
Oh that's super interesting. I think I'm a Fuji Fangirl at heart with an OMD Mark 5 and two pro lens so have to figure it out eventually!!
Hi Rob
thanks for useful videos
I have a question that I could not find the answer at first glimps; is it possible to have "myset" for differents video settinfs for example; one for lapse time and another one for 120p and another one for 30p et.c
thank you
hans J. Plourde
Thanks. Unfortunately there is no way to save mysets for video settings.
Just a plain Thank You. 👍
You're welcome!
Rob, as usual very informative. I love the way you go through each setting mode in a very precise, clear and professional way. Only 1 thing missing. Color space should be Adobe RGB and not sRGB :-)
One question: for sport photography shooting in jpeg rather than jpeg+raw will speed up the horsepower and camera overall performance, or no noticable changes should happen?
If shooting raw, it doesn't matter if you shoot Adobe RGB or sRGB. Adobe RGB is used in professional workflow with calibrated cameras, monitors, and printers. I always shoot sRGB since 99% of consumer level media is sRGB.
For sport shooting, it only makes a difference if you are constantly overshooting the buffer. So if you press and hold the shutter for more than 5 seconds, this could be a problem. You'll have to do testing with your camera and your memory cards to see where the buffer runs out.
Hi Rob, just found your videos, these are all great. On my E-M10 Mk 2 the MySet's are there but I cannot select them, why is that?
Regards, Rob
Most likely you are in Movie Mode on the mode dial. Make sure you're using P,A,S,M. Let me know if that works. -Rob
@@RobTrek yes on Auto those settings are not available. Thanks Rob.
Brilliant advice on this video,so happy to have myset 1 and 2 assigned to the iauto and art settings on the top dial something i would never have worked out on my own with my em5 mkii
Glad it helped!
@@RobTrek Thanks Rob. I didn't follow your routine correctly. I have managed to do it now.
Thanks. I shoot a lot at night, so need to keep the shutter speed as fast as possible.
I have a problem with the Fn field in the super control panel. I am unable to set two different Fn functions for two different sets.
Example : if I set :
- Fn2 to AEL/AFL in the 1st set
- Fn3 to magnify in the 2nd set
it is still set to Fn2 for all sets.. Strange!
Hi, Gilles. Sorry for the late reply. There are too many variables here and I would need more information to give you an answer. Can you email maybe a short video of how you're setting up your camera? Maybe just use your cell phone to record what and how you're setting things, then show the problem. rob@robtrek.com Thanks.
Hi Rob
I would like to know what setting I need to use to capture high speed planes and vehicles
For my Om-D E 10 Mark ll
Hi. You could use the same settings found in my birds in flight video: ruclips.net/video/E0hBOO3udIA/видео.html The only tweak I would make is you could probably get away with 1/1000th sec shutter speed.
you have ONE custom setting in the mark III
@@es1951 hi what is the settings you would use
Rob, can you do a demo on focus stacking with the 10 mark 11 and the 5 mark 11, I just cant get it to come together.
Many Thanks
Terry
The em10ii doesn't stack in-camera, but does focus bracket. I'll make an em5ii focus stacking video soon.
Rob, maybe already mentioned but if I format a new memory card does this affect all my Mysets? Keep up the great work!
No. It won't affect your mysets when you format you memory card.
I see this camera is on sale for 299 with kit lens. Very tempting with its size, I already have a g95 however tempted
I know how you feel. But resist. The g85 has the articulating screen, mic jack, and optional battery grip. It would make a much more suitable b-roll and backup to the g95.
@@RobTrek thank you for the wise words. Looking at a g85 or gh4 now
In Myset 1 I have all my base settings, so go in A and recall myset 1, than in S and recall myset 1, than in P and recall myset 1 ? in this way ?
Yes, that works. Just be aware that recalling from the menu will not overide the "P,A,S,M" mode. But recalling via function button will. So P mode can revert to "A" mode if recalling from a function button if you set myset in "A" mode.
Just found out the Mark III version doesn't have the Mysets feature! What a bummer!!
Yeah, that was a big mistake. It is missed.
I am glad my EM1.3 already has the custom buttons on the dial. Now, if Olympus would provide a way to rename the custom buttons...
I doubt they'll add naming custom settings.
I may be missing something (hopefully) but it appears Olympus removed the Myset menu feature in the OM-D E-M10 Mark III. I have the latest Firmware upgrade?
You are correct. Unfortunately the Mark III doesn't have this feature.
Thanks Rob; I can't imagine what Olympus was thinking in deleting such a useful function.
Thanks

Hi. Again could you help me with a time lapse question?
Sure. Ask me anything!
Does anybody know how to do this but in an M10 III, the menu is different. Thanks.
Unfortunately, the EM10.3 doesn't have this feature.
@@RobTrek Thanks a lot. I'd like to make another question, I see that my photos almost always appear with more haze than normal or real, I have to reduce haze by post processing. Could I do something some adjustment to my M10.3. Thank you in advance.
@@jaquirozmel There are several things to check. Make sure your lenses are clean. Check the front and rear elements for fingerprints. Inspect your sensor for fingerprints and dust. In your settings, try natural color profile, sharpness +1, contrast +2, gradation Normal. Check your jpg quality setting is set to LSF.
@@RobTrek Ok. I'll check all of that. Thanks. I'm following your channel. In fact I am subscribed to your channel, I whatcha your videos more than once. Thanks again.
Can yo save different functions in f1 and f2 in my sets.
Unfortunately not. Changes to the fn buttons are applied to all photo modes on the camera. They can't be saved to a set.
Thanks Rob.
I really get a lot out of your RUclips presentations. Much more informative than the manual...
