One might argue that God brought down the storm so Robin gets sympathy points. XD so he might just be a MFT user for all we know ;) Thanks for this, Robin!
For those of you who made it to the end of the video, don't panic, both myself and my gear survived the violent thunderstorm. I found out minutes later (after filming) that trees were falling and properties and cars were damaged, just several miles away from where I was filming. There were flash floods happening around the city, causing traffic jams everywhere. Also, a tree fell onto the train tracks and effectively suspended the entire train service for that particular line, which happened to be the one I need to ride to get home. I found alternative means of transport of course. However, when the tree fell, the train service was halted immediately and the passengers were reportedly stuck in their respective trains for almost 3 hours before emergency evacuation process started. Apart from minor inconveniences, I am just thankful I am ok, and unharmed.
Hi Robin. I have an old E-M5 Mark 1 which doesn't have anti-shock (0) as an option. What do you suggest I set it to in this case? I shoot landscape and urban.
I was impressed how wet your glasses were! I also wear glasses and the only time I really don't like them is in the rain. Usually, in the rain my hand is above them and people think I am shielding from the Sun, so people helpfully tell me that the Sun is not shining. Hmmmm. I may shoot more one-handed and shift the power button ...
@@gaoldias try taking a few shots with the normal shutter, do you see any softness/unsharp images? Shutter shock is not that common and you should not have to worry about it. If you are shooting landscape then you can set 1/8s delay for the anti-shock, since your subject is stationary.
For tip #5, here I give kudos to Panasonic cameras. If I want to set a button to do something else, I simply hold that button for one second and the selection screen pops up automatically, no need for digging inside the menu.
While watching this video I changed the position of the power switch and most of the other things as well... A couple of days later I grabbed my camera and turned it on and it was broken... I wouldn't turn on. I changed the battery, took the lens off and put it back on and got very frustrated....... Then I remembered that I had followed the video and changed the position of the power switch.... Then I got a good laugh because the joke was on me.
Hi Robin. Another great video, this time with a dramatic ending! My favourite setting for the E-M1 Mk II is the AF Targeting Pad. That being said, I recently had a surprise when it stopped working altogether. Every time I would want to move the AF target, I would get an icon telling me that Touch was off even though the setting said it was on. I finally found out that, according to page 112 of the User Manual, drag operation can be disabled or enabled by double-tapping the monitor while keeping your eye in the viewfinder. I thought it was worth mentioning as others may get the same problem.
Hey Guy, thanks for the kind words. I honestly did not expect the storm to get that much worse, and I was a little worried. Thankfully everything was ok. The video was meant to be a quick quide, and as much detail I tried to squeeze in the video is pushing 15 minutes long. People are not interested to watch anything past 10-12 minutes, so I have to decide to exclude some dettails. Unfortunately, you are right, there are some important information, but I guess that can come at later videos.
Your videos are perfect the way they are and I’m always looking forward to your next one. But I thought this was worth mentioning in a comment as extra info.
This is a brilliant video. I made these changes immediately I got my camera years ago. What I don't understand is why these aren't the default settings as they improve the out of camera results you can achieve from these amazing cameras. Most people who got these cameras have been shooting lower quality "out of box" experience compared to most other cameras and maybe this was why they didn't sell too well? I for sure when first using the camera wasn't impressed at all with the results it gave me up until i discovered these settings and changed them. It's like Olympus marketing made them poor out of box shooters from get go, why I have no idea. Great video my friend, well done and thanks for making and sharing this despite the terrifying weather!!
No worries, glad I can share, and glad you found them useful. I think Olympus, or any other camera manufacturers have a very "safe" default camera settings. They are configured for those who may not be too well educated on photography technical controls. But once we know what we want, we do want to customize our camera and optimize it for our own shooting workflow, and I am glad Olympus makes their cameras fully customizable!
My OMD D 5 III is the worst out of the box camera I have owned. I will follow this video after I come back from my trip to Europe tomorrow. 'btw. I have been shooting 50 years, retired pro and have used all formats from 8x10 to Minox....I do not like this camera one bit
For me, one of the most useful videos to date. In addition to the core content, I found myself pausing the video each time a custom menu was displayed and checking your settings against mine, which provided additional value (i.e., permitted me to recheck my settings vs. yours and also provided re-orientation to many settings I don't use frequently). Thanks much.
Robin: your positivity is contagious and heartwarming. Thank you for sharing it, along with all the invaluable shooting best practices. My OM-D has never produced better images! God bless and best to you and yours!
Quite frankly one of the most epic videos. Came to learn about useful OM-D settings, but witnessed your amazing commitment to what you do. Kudos to you! You are a legend, my friend.
Robin your smile and attitude when delivering your content and hands down a breath of fresh air! I really enjoy you and your work! keep up the great job!! looking forward to more videos!
Thank you Robin for showing me these 10 things you always change on a new OM D camera. I will shortly be taking delivery of my first ever m43 camera, a used OM -D EM10 and I expect I will be following you on many of your preferences. At the moment I am looking for any insight I can find that helps me familiarise myself with what seems a very complex system before I receive my “new to me” camera.
I have had an OMDEM1 markii for a number of years and wish I had seen this much earlier. I just got a new OM1 yesterday and this will be fantastically helpful. Thank you

Great video, I loved the rain and storm. I've watched a bunch of your videos about Olympus cameras because I like the idea of smaller, lighter, but I cannot stand the complexity of Olympus menus. It feels like they designed the cameras to function handicapped, thus requiring you to spend months figuring out layers of menus.
You are my man! I bought some days ago a used M1II but in very good conditions. I love you videos they helps me a lot to lern to get in touch with the camera. Thanks from Germany!

Thanks!! New to an EM Mk2 and these settings help. It’s such a cool little camera, incredible tech! Coming from a fuji, the stabilising is really something special :)
I judt bought my first Olympus, an em-1 mk1. It is what it is, but I'm fzr from being a pro, I'm just an enthousiast with a very limited budget 😅 You're videos are SO useful, i was happy with my Lumix G7 but I wanted that little something more. And I don't regret at all, I love my olympus !
I am catching up on all of your videos Robin. Just recently subscribed. Laughed when the thunderclap happened right when you talked about anti shock. 😊
Thanks for another good set of tips. With regard to AF focus points could you do a session explaining AF and phase detection. IE does phase detection work with single shot mode or just continuous focus mode. I also saw an Olympus video that said phase detect AF could not work with the smallest focus point you showed, but it was unclear if the presenter meant only in continuous. There seems to be some debate in forums where phase detect is used and if it works in the smallest AF point you showed. It would be good to clear the matter up.
I really love your positive energy through all of your videos! I've purchased the first OM-D E-M1 and it's not even came to me but I'm already very excited for it. I'm already have E-PL5 and one of my friends want to buy it from me. He was really impressed to see it in action.
Hi Robin, I use the same configuration than you except for the on/off button cause I've always be a two hands user to maximise stability... And I always shoot in raw + jpeg (L-Sf) as memory size and cost is no more a problem for years. The other important tweak, for me, is to separate AF and light metering : I make the focus in afc mode with my thumb on AF-L button and keep it memorized when I stop pressing, then shutter button is just half-pressed to memorize exposure before shooting, using exposure compensation if needed or simply switching to Manual mode (witch I rarely do except in rare cases like doing panoramics or using flash). Thanks for your sharings, even in stormy times... 👍
I have a coworker that shot FF Nikon professionally for awhile, though an accident occurred, and she isn’t able to carry the heavy lenses. Am leaning her to M4/3, as the lenses are truly excellent, and are lightweight.
Thank's for taking the time to make this useful video. I'm happy to see that some of your options are the same as I use since I start using Olympus OMD cameras.
I'm laughing out loud alone in my house with your video right now. The magnificent tips I knew thanks to you and the laughs have been a gift. Thank you Robin !! :))
Bought EM-10 II last week and exposure meter in manual mode was annoying, so I was shooting mostly in A-mode, but knowing for live view boost to turn off, finally shows me what I want to see! Thanks man!
Great job again good sir! I actually laughed about #1. As someone who has his 300 f4 on the camera and it hanging from a cross-shoulder sling most of the time, I really treasure having the on-off lever easy to read, and on top of the camera, so I don’t have to lift it up to turn it on or off, the way I had to with the older Olympus dslrs. The AEL button on my camera is already dedicated to back-button focus, too. I pretty much always use all of the others settings you demonstrated. It was a good review for me.
No worries, as I said in the beginning we set the camera to suit our own shooting workflow and preferences. I suggested changing one of the buttons, any button to ISO shortcut, since the AEL/AFL was the one clearly shown in the video frame, I chose that.
Hi Robin! Thanks for another helpful video. I remember a similar video you made where Iwas able to apply your tips to my E-PL6. Glad you are safe. All the best!
Great video!! Thank you for the clarity and just got my first Olympus OM-D camera and this was super helpful answering a lot of questions I had and a few that I didn't even know i had as well!
Thank you for your video! After I saw your video and the topic prank/troll, I directly took my not working M1 to check if anybody trolled me. But still, it doesn't switch on anymore :(
Robin; perhaps God is a FF user and giving you a hard time !
I thought so too! This deserves a pin!
Divine entities probably use 35KM cameras. 😝
One might argue that God brought down the storm so Robin gets sympathy points. XD so he might just be a MFT user for all we know ;) Thanks for this, Robin!
God has no "faith" in MFT, apparently.
You are so good and funny sometimes. Great vidéo as usual.
Thank you.

Lucky your Olympus gear is waterproof. I can't believe you finished the video with lightning over your head 👏👏 👏

In silent mode the AF beep is turned off. Nice background "music". I love thunderstorms.
Using silent mode and turning the AF beep off are two different things.

I have just seen your video. We never get such crazy rain storms here in Denmark. Very interesting to see and a great video regardless 😉🌱
7:25 Robin, now you have 3 buttons for setting ISO/WB: Fn1, (o) and AEL/AFL :)
Great Video and super helpful for my E-M10 III. Thanks Robin!!
Thank's for taking the time to make this useful video. I'm happy to see that some of your options are the same as I use since I start using Olympus OMD cameras.
No worries, glad I can share!
Thanks man!
No worries, glad I can help
Fantastic tips Robin.
Cheers
Tip # 7 was a life saver
Thanks for the great tips Robin.Keep them coming
An amazing video. This is the most incredible performance _ any tips on weatherproofing modifications?😄
