Hi. I use an online calculator here: www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html Just select any Olympus camera in the drop-down menu, your aperture, and distance to subject, and it will tell you the DOF & hyperfocal distance. There are also many free apps for phones. I use one called hyperfocal pro. Generally, with a 17mm lens, set it to f8, focus at 8 ft, and everything will be in focus from about 4ft to infinity.
@@RobTrek Thanks a lot! I will continue to follow your videos with the greatest interest, as much the manual is complicated as your videos are clear. I appreciate it.
Fabulous Videos Rob - certainly helped me a lot. When I scroll through the time settings I get to 60 sec - then go straight to live buld - live time - livecomp - BUT NO Bulb. Have I somehow turned bulb off in the settings. Its driving me nuts so any suggestions how to get Bulb back would be most welcome
Hi, sorry for the late reply. You can't have "Live Bulb" and "Bulb" available at the same time. If you turn "Off" Live Bulb, you will see Bulb and visa-versa.
Hi Rob! Greetings from South Africa! I recently bought the E-M10 Mark II and your walkthroughs are much better than anything else offered online. From your experience, do you have any recommendations for accessories that would be useful for a beginner to buy? Again, thank you for all the hard work you put in!
It's getting hard to find em10.ii accessories. There was a grip for it that I'd recommend, but I can't find it anymore. There are other similar grips, but not as nice. I think extension tubes and a flash with radio triggers should be next. See my video on macro photography. Table top tripod and usb dual charger. All those are relatively cheap and should make things easier.
Hi, I am new to Olympus and I need your help! Could you tell me how to make the focus point always be in the centre, so that the camera would not look for a place to focus, but would be firmly placed in the centre, so that by turning the camera I would direct this point in the centre to the place where I want to focus.
Hey Rob don't know if you'll see this but was wondering about the setting in "A" AF/MF setting section of the menu on my M5 MkII called Full-Time AF. It is either on or off. From playing with it a bit looks like it automatically acquires focus before you push the shutter button. It seems like CF without having to press the shutter. What do you suppose the use of this feature would be? While on the subject of focus modes, when selecting the area of the field of view the focus is attempted, you can set the camera to look at the entire area (all squares). My question is how does the camera know what to focus on? Does the camera consider the DOF based on the F Stop, Shutter and ISO to pick the area of sharpest focus in the area? When would you use that type of focus points. I have always chosen to use single point focus because I have never been able to get an explanation of why you would want to let the camera randomly chose the focus point. This was true when I was shooting Nikon DSLRs as well.
Hi, W Hoggdoc. The Full-Time AF is for C-AF when you are recording externally to an hdmi recorder like an Atomos Ninja. This way the camera will autofocus even when you don't push the record or shutter button. As for "entire area" focus, the camera just picks the highest contrast point in the frame unless face detect is on, in which case it will focus on a face(s). I always use single point too.
I Rob, you are much appreciated. How can I see the autofocus box on the screen while recording myself? When I push record the eye-tracking indicator stops showing.
Great video. Learned so many new things and I have been using this camera system for 6 years. Why is that the faster lens focused better even though both lenses were at f5.6? Can your explain why and when to chose the different size focus points? What do you recommend for birds in flight, sports or planning?
Thanks, Michael. The camera focuses with the lenses wide open. It only stops down when it takes the picture. Hence, faster lenses let more light in for the autofocus system to work. For birds, sports, etc... I recommend 9pts at first, but then single point as you build up your skill/precision for tracking yourself.
This may be overkill, but is there a way to set a distance for focusing and save that to a MySet? It could be explained as zone focusing with the convenience of auto focusing in a single mode.
Hi Rob. As always thanks for teaching us how to use this great camera. Unfortunately after a couple of months of happy shooting, the auto focus seems to have randomly stopped working. It just won't lock on to anything, I've tried a full reset, but no joy. Any ideas what might have happened?
You may just have dirty contacts on the camera and/or lens. Check out some videos on how to clean those. I've seen people use q-tips with rubbing alcholol or a pencil eraser.
Hi Rob. You changed the lenses but haven't changed the aperture of the lens. You kept in on F5.6. So the amount of light through the lens will be the same or not? Please correct me when I'm wrong.
really great video! i'am about to buy this camera because it seems really good and i found the body new for 200 euro. I mainly shoot fashion and i will find myself to shoot with a tripod self photos , also while i'am walking. How will i have to set the focus? i think i will use the zuiko 45 mm1.8
Thanks! I would use S-AF and move the focus point to the eye. For selfies, face detect with eye detect turned on. Watch this video for more ruclips.net/video/YtbJ-T4_XSE/видео.html
@@RobTrek thank you so much ! It's Just the video i was searching. Would this method also work with more distance like 10/15 meters? And in manual mode Is possible? ( Sorry For all these questions)
@@omarosman6403 At that distances, the depth of field would pretty much offset any focus issues. But to answer your question,, the face detect will struggle beyond 5 meters.
I just started watching your tutorials and wow it's been so helpful ( I plan to watch them all ). I currently have an Oly Pen E-P3. I am considering buying a E-M10 Mark II or Mark III. The III sounds like the menu system is simpler and has other features. I'm leaning toward the Mark II for two reasons: more menu options / function buttons and the fact that your tutorials are all using the Mark II. I just think I would loose out if I tried to follow your good tips using the Mark III. Do you have any plans to move up to the Mark III any time soon? Do you think I'll see a benefit from the E-P3 to the Mk II ? One last question: I don't see Center Weighted as a focusing option on the Mark II, does setting the grid size to e.g. 9 pt focus work similar? thanks
Hi. Unless you really need 4k video, go with the Mark II. They simplified the menu in the Mark III but also removed some of the useful features I talk about and recommend in my tutorials. You will see a nice boost in features going from the E-P3 to the Mark II to help you take better pictures. That said, the E-P3 takes equally good pictures. Thanks for watching!
I don't do portraits professionally. The eye detect works if you really have easy targets, but I don't think it's reliable. I haven't seen any camera where you can rely on the automated systems entirely. So best to do it manually.
Hi Rob, I've learned so much from your video series, so thank you. Since the low frame rate sequential shooting mode will focus for each shutter release, when should one choose C-AF over S-AF when shooting in this mode? I have not had a great success rate getting in-focus shots for moving subjects like dogs or cyclists. Thanks!

Sorry for the late reply. The EM10ii does let you select up to 81 points in various configurations. From the website: 81-area multiple AF/ All target, Group target area (9-area), Single target(normal), Single target (small). You do this in the super control panel using the info button and front/rear dials.
Hi Rob, thank u so much for your wonderful videos. I had this camera for two years ever since my first kid was born but i have never fully utilised the camera at all. Until now, after watching your videos, i can't wait to use the camera and take many pictures of my kid again. Can i ask what's the best lens for this camera, for shooting young children/toddlers? Because their actions r fast, n most of the times indoors with low light, what's a good lens to invest in for taking photos of young children? Thanks Rob =)
Thanks. 2 year olds are the best! I love how they are just starting to put words together. I need to do a tutorial on how to do videos with the camera so you can get some memorable videos of your kids.
@@RobTrek Thanks for your quick reply Rob =) awesome! because i'm thinking about investing a lens so that i can take better shots of my 2 year old so hope to hear your advise on it. cheers!!!
That is correct. Not cluster af. However, cluster af is simply a visualization of the af tracking. It is not a separate tracking mode. The em10.2 does have afc with tracking. It's not very good, but it is available.
@@RobTrek Thanks. I got it for street photography, not sports or wildlife, especially because of the customizable buttons, so it's not too bad if the AF-C isn't very good, the damage is limited...
The F/2 lens aperture is at F/5.6, as shown on the LCD. The F/4 lens was set at this too. So, both the lenses lets in the same amount of light. But the camera acquires focus with the F/2 lens. Why?
Great question! When the camera is acquiring focus, it opens the lens wide open to f/2. Once focus is acquired, it closes down to f/5.6 to take the picture.
Been looking at you're videos for a long time and helped me alot , just a quick question, is there any way I can change settings on my olympus omd10 Mark II while doing a time laps? Like if you doing a sunset and you wanna increase the shutter speed. Thbaks
If you shoot in aperture priority, it will automatically adjust exposure as the light changes. Just plan ahead to anticipate the range of shutter speed you'll need so you don't hit a limit. For example, if you're currently fixed at f/4.0 and fixed iso200 and the shutter speed is reading 1/250th, then you can safely drop 3 stops of light before you need to consider motion because you'll be at 1/30th sec speed. If the light drops more, your shutter speed can quickly become too slow depending on what you are capturing.
Hi Rob... if u still answer questions with this vid... my om-d 10mk2 is stuck on MF and will not change out of it if i go thru the menu or use the front dial when in the ok screen (ie..press ok and the settings pop up... do u have any experience with this?.. is it the reason my 40-150mm 4-5.6 wont work ( black screen with info displayed).. i just got the 15mm bodycap lens which works fine but unsure if i should buy a new 40-150 in case this stuck on MF will mean it wont work.. cheers for the vids.... they really help out.. :)
If you put a lens on without electrical contacts such as the 15mm body cap lens, the camera will lock the focus mode to MF. As for your 40-150mm, there are different things you need to check and diagnose whether it's the camera or the lens. The easiest way is to put on any other auto-focus capable lens onto your camera. If it works, then the 40-150mm might be defective. If you can, try the 40-150mm lens on another Olympus body. If it works, then the problem might be with your camera or the contacts might be dirty. Use a dry q-tip to carefully clean the contacts. The only other issue might be you're not fully locking the lens onto the body. Make sure you hear a small "click" sound when mounting and that the lens doesn't rotate back off without pushing the release button.
@@RobTrek cheers for the info/advice. the lens (40-150) doesnt click when mounting but also doesnt rotate back off... its in place but no click (as the other lens do)...i do remember when it failed it made a clicking noise and went blank.. which makes me think its the lens.. i will also look into cleaning the contacts better than i have .. thanks again and all the best.
@@aaronherron5307 Check the pin hole on the mount on the lens. It may have some lint or something preventing the camera's pin from fully extending into that hole. Maybe use a toothpick to clean it out.
I did some macro shots the other day and I needed to change my focus point coz I changed to the 9 point focus but is there anyway to focus within the whole 9 square focus point or does it still just do single point focus within those 9 squares? My subject was very close and I wanted more focus area but it still did he one square :)
Hi. I'm reading your question 2 ways. Are you trying to get a larger area in focus or are you trying to pick a focus point within the 9 points? To get a larger area, you need to use a higher aperture number or do focus stacking. As for the 9 points, the camera picks a single point with the most contrast or the first point it can lock on to. You can't pick a point within the 9.
Rob Trek cheers mate, yeah I wanted a larger area in focus without like moving my camera further away. Okay sweet I’ll try that, I’m still new to photography. Yeah I changed to 9 point focus but didn’t realize it would still do a single point within those 9 frames :)
Thank you. I'm much better photographer thanks to your videos:) I have just one comment - did you update firmware in your body? I updated firmware and my super panel looks a bit differently.
this panel looks differently - it's not a rectangle, but 2 rows only with the same functionality (maybe it can be configured). I can send you a screen by mail.
That is the "Live Control". After you push the okay button and it pops up, try pushing the "Info" button and see if the super control panel comes up. The "Info" button will toggle between the Super Control Panel and Live Control. If you don't see it, go into Custome Menu "D. Disp/PC" ---> "Control Settings" --> P/A/S/M --> then check the boxes for Live control and/or Live SCP.

THANKS A LOT
You're welcome!
Explain very clear thanks Rob¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Thank you.
Another fantastic video! BTW, is that an Em-10mkIII you are playing with?
No, still on the mkII.
Hi Rob. Once again an excellent video. I have been following your instruction videos and using them with my EM-5. Why can't Olympus do what you do?
Thanks. They'd probably sell more cameras if they did.
I Rob, you are much appreciated. How can I see the autofocus box on the screen while recording myself? When I push record the eye-tracking indicator stops showing.
No, the box turns off when recording but eye/face tracking is still on.
@@RobTrek Thanks, Rob.
Great tutorial with lot's of useful information. Please keep on the good work. Btw: rather creepy clown on 10:08 ;-)...
Thanks. Yes, the clown was the only prop I had that had eyes.
This may be overkill, but is there a way to set a distance for focusing and save that to a MySet? It could be explained as zone focusing with the convenience of auto focusing in a single mode.
Unfortunately on the E-M10 series, there is no way to do that.
@@RobTrek I'll try it, thanks.
@@RobTrek I'll try it, thanks.
@@RobTrek Very sadly, that didn't work. My 3 month old camera is quite ill it seems 😭😭😭
@@ZaGaijinSmash Last thing to try is your lenses on someone else's camera or a second camera. Rule out the camera or the lenses.
Hi Rob. You changed the lenses but haven't changed the aperture of the lens. You kept in on F5.6. So the amount of light through the lens will be the same or not? Please correct me when I'm wrong.
Yes, the same! Good observation.
really great video! i'am about to buy this camera because it seems really good and i found the body new for 200 euro.
Can you explain the focus for portrait? The focus at eyes. Is goog in EM10? Thanks for your videos. The very best about EM10 in the net.
Thanks!
What lens are you using? Also, check out my birds in flight video. ruclips.net/video/E0hBOO3udIA/видео.html

hi rob, im new with olympus. and i cannot find multiple focus point. does this camera have multiple focus point?
@@RobTrek Thanks for your quick reply Rob =) awesome! because i'm thinking about investing a lens so that i can take better shots of my 2 year old so hope to hear your advise on it. cheers!!!
Apparently there's no possibility of "cluster" on the E-M10 Mark II, that is to say automatic tracking in AFC mode?
Rob Trek thank you, Mr. Trek!
@@RobTrek Thanks for the explanation. I never knew that. Is that for all camera systems, DSLR and mirorrless?
If the light drops more, your shutter speed can quickly become too slow depending on what you are capturing.
does C-AF in sequential High work in the 10 mark III?
Sorry, C-AF only works in the LOW settings. -Rob
Hi Rob, I own an E-M10 MkI, do you think it is worthwhile to upgrade to MkII, I think not. If you have a different opinion explain here, please.
I don't see any reason to upgrade, unless you want to get into video. Then the e-m5-ii is a good deal right now on getolympus.com refurbished.
Hi Rob... if u still answer questions with this vid... my om-d 10mk2 is stuck on MF and will not change out of it if i go thru the menu or use the front dial when in the ok screen (ie..press ok and the settings pop up... do u have any experience with this?.. is it the reason my 40-150mm 4-5.6 wont work ( black screen with info displayed).. i just got the 15mm bodycap lens which works fine but unsure if i should buy a new 40-150 in case this stuck on MF will mean it wont work.. cheers for the vids.... they really help out..
What lens is your f/2?
The Olympus 12mm f/2.0.
Thanks and thanks for your videos!!!!!
Hey, can u show me how to take light trail on video? Pen f. Thanks:)
Sure. I'll try and put something together. Thanks!
Thanks så much. Did you know? I m learning very much of watching ur video - I appreciate you very much 🙏
When you put on the faster lens it remained on f/5.6....
Good observation.
Great. I have a focus stacking video you can check out, see if that helps. ruclips.net/video/_KszxKxKokI/видео.html
Thank you. I'm much better photographer thanks to your videos:) I have just one comment - did you update firmware in your body? I updated firmware and my super panel looks a bit differently.
I did update before this video. What camera and firmware do you have?
omd m10 mark II, firmware 1.3
Same here. Specifically what difference do you see?
this panel looks differently - it's not a rectangle, but 2 rows only with the same functionality (maybe it can be configured).
Nothing about how to use manual lenses on this camera...
