Thanks for a great review! Found this video because I'm trying to figure out whether I should get the X2D + 55mm or a Q3 43, which come out to the same focal length. I already have a regular Q3 28mm and love the images coming out of it, so not sure which way to go.
Hakone rocks! I’m also using Leica M as my main camera system and newly invested into Hasselblad, 907x series for the look, weight and versatility. Haven’t got a chance to put the Hassy into real life use yet, but I imagine the system fits for cities like Hakone, Kyoto or 苏州, where a lot to play with composition than actions. 907x is a FUN system to use. For conventional street style snaps, M with manual A/S and zone focusing wins all systems.
Hello Jimmy, nice to see you again. I would like to ask you about the x2d and cfv 100 what is your opinion about these ? Im buying one but I really cant decide about it. I only take cityscape and landscape like mark power , alec soth. Thanks ❤❤
Imho optically 55v is better than 45p definitely. 28p worser than 55v/38v but still pretty ok especially not wide open and without flares. I have m11 and x2d both and can’t decide what is better - so i use both cameras and select one depending from the shoot purpose. Portraits including genre is better with leica, landscapes and architecture (and objects) - hasselblad. Last 2 trips to Japan i used hasselblad with 55v and 28p. Japan is very texture rich, quality of materials and subtle colors plays its role and i shot a lot of landscapes / architecture/ objects when traveling. So obviously Hasselblad. Best color and tone / resolution. For portraits (i done them a lot) - Leica makes better effect for me, more painting like, more impressive. Hasselblad is clinically clean. Sometimes it’s not good if you want to made people/ world looking better than it is. Sometimes clinical pictures is better especially for good still life subjects. So I chose accordingly.
I concur with the post process.. i have been converting through the phocus software before importing to LR, while nowadays i have been solely using my ipad hence i imported straight to the LR with camera standard color profile and i find it quite close, and eliminating the need to convert first, i think im fine with it
I switched from M11 to X2D. I really like M cameras but I felt that I just wasn’t happy with the consistency especially with colour. The ibis in the Hasselblad is amazing too. For me, it was really the colour though. The images have something I’ve not seen in any other system. I can’t even say what, but whatever it is it’s real. The innermost ring on the XCD 55 can be used as an aperture ring by the way, which is how I use it. Lovely photos of Japan. Great place to take a camera.
Since Leica went CMOS there is sadly no consistent colour reproduction anymore. They are still trying to figure it out like all other manufacturers. The last consistent M cameras are the M8 and M9 series.
@@Funktrainer I agree. I found with the M11, I would get maybe 1 in 20 images that I looked at and thought 'Wow!' and the rest just "meh'. The other issue is that an M is severely restricted by the fact that it must remain an M in physical size and appearance and there is a limit to what you can fit in. The M11 had endless issues on launch and for many users, still does. The X2D was designed from a blank slate without pre-ordained ideas about size and shape. It really shows when you use it.
The X2D is the most uninspiring camera I have used, its a simple point and shoot camera, too easy auto everything, anti shake, it doesn’t involve you its just a happy snap camera, the lenses are nowhere near Leica quality or sharpness, give me an M11 or my M6 any day!
And of course process of shooting itself is much more fun on leica because of rangefinder mf etc. but hasselblad is about result and fast capture - so question is what you joy more oriented - on process of interacting with camera pr on results of shooting and objects itself. Process or Result dilemma
I don't feel at all the x2d to have a smartphone feeling. Yes, it is touch screen oriented, but still has the important buttons, and more important a great viewfinder. The M11 which I also use feels more simple and analog, yes, but for me the x2d menu etc still very simple and intuitive and not as overloaded like other brands. For me the Leica shines for wide angle, and specially the 28-50mm range, spontaneous photography. The x2d is more accurate for framing and focus, and shines with the color and out of camera image quality. The x2d is not a small camera, I see it more as a landscape or portrait tool. The Q3(28 or 43) are even lighter than an M (still not lockable like a Ricoh Gr3), so comparing a Q3 vs a X2d, I don't see the point of a comparison. It's such a huge difference in size/weight.
@@Tom-uw6dr Thanks for you comment. But I would have to disagree on a few things. For one, q3 is heavier than a black m11, by quite a bit actually, and that’s a fact. I can make a m11+ lens combo lighter than the q3. As for the x2d, I mainly use the back lcd cuz it’s gorgeous and it is adjustable so more usable angles. Plus the fact its leaf shutter is so quite, which doesn’t sound and feel as mechanical as say the gfx. To me it’s like a big smartphone when I’m using it. I actually wished they maintained the x1 D body (which is quite a bit smaller and lighter) and that mode dial. It’s a better design for me.
@ hi jimmy, thanks for your comment. I agree the x1d size to be better than x2d. But then I really love to have ibis to keep iso low and be free to stop down if I want to. I dont shoot either the M11 nor the x2d with display, I prefer the viewfinder. Its luxury to own both, I dont know which I would keep if I could keep just one of them. Best, Tom
The biggest reason to convert in Phocus and export to LR, at least in my opinion, is the notably better highlight recovery. It's not a small difference, which is unfortunate because I hate trying to use Phocus.
oh really? so you noticed a much higher latitude when it comes to highlight when editing in phocus or using the phocus exported file in LR? I guess it's the former? That's something I haven't really tested as I normally expose highlight weighted.
@ Yeah, a good half to almost one full stop. I noticed weird artifacting when lowering highlights that were almost toasted in LR, but using the recovery slider in Phocus didn't have that issue at all.
@@mjlamottthat’s weird - I saw a comparison showing Phocus blew out highlights in situations where LR was able to recover them - the total opposite. Maybe I’ll try some comparisons of my own when I have a nearly blown out shot.
@ Not sure if it would make a difference, but the times I've seen Phocus do better are naturally lit landscapes. Never tried a comparison with overexposed flash. I'd love to be proven wrong because I really don't care for using Phocus.
As M11 user I also had an interest to X2D. But I changed my mind couple of days ago. Because I understood Hasselblad will not so inspire me for a long time as Leica do. Leica - it's a photography by itself
I bought this Hasselblad kit two months ago and have now sold it It didn't live up to my expectations on many counts. but most importantly, it's not fun to shoot with. It's just a tool for boring work
that's exactly what I felt about it. Hence I said it shoots like a smartphone. Leica is much more engaging. Mind I ask which system you settled on afterwards?
Leica is good for its fast optics. Medium format doesn't have this. Taking street photos is easier with M11. Hasselblad is better for landscape and architecture photos because of its better color (especially green) and stabilization. Hasselblad optics are boring compared to Leica, and new optics V are bad in everything except weight and focusing speed. Old Hasselblad lenses were and are great.
Quote "Whether it is JPEG photos directly out of the camera or 3FR files from Hasselblad’s image processing software Phocus, the results will always be the genuine “Hasselblad colour"" They did not mention LR or any adobe product. At least that's all I can find from Hasselblad's side.
I’m very happy with my Leica Q2 monochrome cameras. I have two currently but I’ll probably sell one as I don’t need two anymore. I feel like the X2D is nice but kind of acts like a smartphone as you said. The Leica cameras make you feel like a photographer because they are so engaging.
My goal is image output. I have both m11 and X2D. The X2D files are a step above in all measurements
@@Monochromatic77 so true. That is one thing Hasselblad definitely wins here. But m11 is no slouch either if you’re willing to do some post.
