    After working with my 300D for about 20 years, and basically never taking it out of full auto, I decided it was time to actually learn how to take pictures. On the advice of a good friend in the UK who is a superb photographer, I picked up a used 20D and 7D and a couple of decent lenses, and set myself the task of watching RUclips tutorials on the triangle and other fundamentals. Once I got comfortable with that, and decided that Av was my preferred mode, I decided to treat myself to a 60th birthday present: A used 1DX Mark III. This camera is complete overkill for someone like me, but I don't care about that. I love the camera. It's built like a tank, and for whatever reasons I've found it easier to learn than were the 20D and 7D.
    The industry's move to mirrorless is something I don't care about, since I've got a fair amount of money invested in cameras and lenses now. This hardware is more than enough for me, and with the move to mirrorless, I seem to have a lot of options now for reasonably-priced used EF lenses, so that's a great advantage too.

      Mini JCW I actually have been using the 1D mark IV for years and also own a 6D mark II. In regards to accuracy and speed, I am really impressed by the very clean, used original 1Dx I just bought off eBay. Received the other day. It’s so much faster and more accurate than anything I’ve had yet!! Might be a good option for you also. For $1400 I did pretty good!

    After watching your review, I’m trying to decide between 1DX Mk3 and R5. I most shoot photos and not much video. I usually shoot events, so very dark places and people moving fast. With my 6Dii, 5 out of 10 shots are blurred & can’t use them. If money is not an issue, which one do u think is better?

  • @JGZphotography

    Interesting on battery life: I have shot over 3,900 images on one battery on my 1DX2. Now, the battery life depends on several points. 1. Setting the auto battery turn-off in the menu to a max of 4-minutes so that the camera goes into sleep mode when not in active use. Not doing this will consume battery power at all times when not in use and will lower the number of shots. 2. Taking several thousand shots in a short period of time, typically within 3 hours when shooting action sports. I did this in a boxing match and come close to filling a 128 GB Fast Card in RAW with that 3,900 images. 3. Shooting many images or time using Live View will shorten battery life. So, the number of images shot on either a 1DX2 or 3 will ultimately depend on the battery settings, the overall length of time keeping the camera on vs the number of photos taken.

      Or you can simply turn it off..This camera is a fast paced pro camera,so when you are in the mix,in the boxing ring,at the soccer game,at the NFL game,you are constantly shooting.It's easier to just wait until halftime,or during a break,send the files to a server,change the battery,charge the other one,and keep shooting.That way you keep the cards clear,at least one,and you have power.

    With the new technology, is it comparable to 24MP, even though it's 20MP?

    • @Ninja-po1yb
      @Ninja-po1yb 4 года назад

      It's more that you have less option to crop but with 24MP vs 20MP vs 18MP I've never really noticed much. The reason why canon used 20MP (Just me guessing) is because it's just better in lowlight (less megapixels mean less noise because the sensor pixels are bigger and capture more light) which is great for sports photographers and smaller files mean larger buffer. You can compare the 24MP and 20MP. In this case it would be both are great and you wont really notice anything

    Interesting video! Is the H.265 HEVC ALL-I or IPB compression from 1DX Mark III different from H.265 HEVC from Canon XF705? In Premiere the H.265 from Canon XF705 struggles with my iMac, is there anyone that has tested the 4:2:2 codec 10 bit from 1DX Mark III? I share with you my iMac configuration : iMac Pro - 2.5GHz 14-core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.3GHz 128GB 2666MHz DDR4 ECC memory 4TB SSD Radeon Pro Vega 64 with 16GB of HBM2 memory. What greatly concerns me was the totally blown out highlights in one of the outdoor portraits of your female model....

    • @parkcameras
      @parkcameras  4 года назад +3

      Yes, that was the one where I was pushing it to 10,000 ISO. Unfortunately, with new cameras we generally have to use the JPEGs as the different programs (lightroom / photoshop etc.) haven't been updated with the information for the newest raw files (since the camera wasn't even out) which means, sometimes, like in this situation, we don't have as much room to recover highlights and shadows. Obviously in this case, I was really trying to push that ISO number which is why it became a little bright. Hope that helps :-)

      NONE of those type of cameras have one..NEVER..It's not really viable and efficient in the professional environment.It's fine with slower paced shooting,but not when you're around 100 others,pushing,shoving,and in tight spots.If you want something with that screen in motion,you would look at the Fuji GFX100 or Pentax K1 mk2,etc...

  • @easer777

    A deal-breaker for me is whether I can focus my 85L manually, the 85L is my work-horse, and it demand very minute focusing, not the least in close-ups and half-figure compositions, and this I'll think takes an "s" type focusing screen (< googl "EG-S focusing screen" if You have no idea what I'm talking about), and the 1DX3's focusing screen are listed at "fixed", not interchangeable.
    So unless Canon have improved the standard focusing screen, so that it actually does show the DoF at f/1.2 etc (< which the standard focusing screens didn't do a couple of generations ago), I will have to pass.
    -Which is really very sad, as I really would like to have a pro camera with an optical viewfinder, before thát is an extinct breed....
    Unless of course, in a portrait situation, if the iTR can keep focus on the eye that I put it onto initially, but, there's no eye-tracking in the optical viewfinder, so I'll think that it will rather focus onto the eye-lashes rather than the iris, which in turn is not good enough for the 85L.
    Whether the iTr can track the eye or not....;- /
    Can You (or someone else around here) tell me if super low-aperture lenses such as the 50L/85L can be focused manually repeatedly at f/1.2 with the standard focusing screen...?
    -And/or whether the iTr focus on the iris or the lashes in f/1.2 shots....?

      bigmaxcc Sony has nothing that can do what this camera does. A9 is not the same as this. The video functions and the fact its 20fps mechanical is in another league compared to the a9. Look on the sports fields see how many are using a9. The sony is a toy its not a professional tool.

    • @schumif1champ
      @schumif1champ 4 года назад +2

      bigmaxcc I think its the right amount for this type of camera. I shoot all real estate photos, videos and headshots. 20mp 1dxii files have been on many billboards and I have never once had someone say it does not look sharp or high res enough. There are other cameras for high megapixel. The Eos R is a great companion camera to the 1dx for higher res. I have owned a7rii and a7riii I never fully switched but after doing that experience twice now I’m sticking with Canon. The RF lenses are amazing I own two the 15-35 and the 70-200. I’m shocked at how good they are. In the next year we will see a high megapixel body from Canon. Different tools for different things. Not to mention with the low pass filter on this 1dxii it is resolving the same as a 24mp camera would.

    • @woodnymph7393
      @woodnymph7393 4 года назад

      @@schumif1champ The Canon does not do 20fps mechanical. It's only 16 fps but 20fps at liveview. The Sony a9 has some advantages in some areas though. Don't make it sound like the A9 can't do shit.

    I love what this camera can do,and heck yeah,i want one in my life.That being said,why is anyone with half a brain,pretending to be surprised that it's awesome,fast,great,and amazing?For $6500 for the body alone,and considering the actual market demographic iit is intended for,it is SUPPOSED to be all that and more.It BETTER be the king,queen,ruler,master,lord,and savior of photography,for $6500!!!!It should make calls,make tea,and send 3000 Raw files to a home server in 30 seconds,while I am still shooting.For $6500,because it's for NFL/pro boxing.Olympics,pro soccer,NBA,and National Geographic,it better be reliable and full of efficient technology.In fact,since this is ONLY really for the real professional,not the people online who claim to be because they 'make money'.
    This is for the professional who would not have to rent nor borrow this camera,who can BUY it,take it through it's paces in the field,and then bring it back if need be.This is NOT the camera to 'compare' with a Sony/Panasonic with,it's a direct comparison to the Nikon D5/upcoming D6.Next,this camera for everyone else,like me and most here,is an easy $12-20 k investment,if you start off with one prime,one zoom,4 CF 1TB cards,the body,and a comparable flash unit.Would I get it?Heck yeah,and I was thinking yesterday about what i can sell,earn,and how many pennies i need to pick up to get it.Plus,Can0n evidently is working on new EF glass,which will not be front heavy,to improve it's handheld workflow.That and the new file system,Ethernet,and that monster battery say it all...Hail to the king?For now...

    For example, try using the screen with some slightly larger lenses, and you'll find that these "hybrid" cameras are nothing more than the last breath of the last dinosaurs on the market, as neither Canon nor Nikon could achieve to get mirrorless telephoto lenses and professional mirrorless cameras ready for the Olympics.
    I see the attempt with hybrid technology as a desperate act by Canon and Nikon to hold on to there conservative professional photographers for a little while until they are ready with some professional mirrorless, its that simple!
    Cheers Jess

    I sold my 1dx mkii and Canon 600 mm, just too heavy for me although they did produce some nice images. I currently own a Sony a9 and the sony 200-600. Granted, the 6.3 aperture is a bit of a bummer but for an old guy like me, the Sony rig is much lighter, and i don't even drag my tripod along anymore. I mainly prefer to shoot BIF.

    It's the king...unless you care about making out detail in shadows and highlights. For dynamic range, a Nikon D850 blows the doors off the Canon.
