    As someone who can't afford or find a HEMA school near me i really enjoy these videos. I hope they keep coming. Hard to find good quality videos which is why I only watch Skall or European Sword reviews and such. Thanks for the videos from Texas :D

      +adrian I think it's great we've got a new channel doing such clear HEMA videos that are easy to understand.
      But you do already have lots of sources on line.The wiktenauer.com site for one and you've got 'The HEMA Alliance' facebook group as well-you can ask loads of questions there about this or that video,this or that technique,principle in fighting or part of a manuscript,interpretations and so on(or if facebook isn't your thing for links to various HEMA forums).

      Thanks! I've been looking for more places to search for these things. As someone who isn't fascinated by much, historical records on medieval culture and weaponry definitely have a place in my heart. The learning never ends!

    I am also located in an area where there are no HEMA clubs. I have set of nylon wasters (Longsword, Messer, Sidesword, soon a Saber) and a heavy leather punching bag in my home gym. Thus far I've been trying to adapt boxing drills to HEMA. I use the heavy bag as a pell and also have a smaller maize bag on a chain thats a good moving target. I have about a six foot square between them to practice footwork.

    This will be great for my wife and I. Both of us want to try our hands at HEMA but with no clubs nearby it's rather difficult. Skall's videos and some of the manuals were the only thing we had to go on until recently.

      +Direrain - go to the facebook group 'The HEMA Alliance' and if you ask their you can find even more online resources.There's lots and lots of info online.
      Also go the group 'HEMA Hacks' and you can see how to make really cheap practice weapons to work with(albeit simply using a stick can work for going through the motions on your own) if you can't get the proper gear either.

    Thank you for these!
    As someone who has no ability to train whatsoever due to lack of any organization like this in my city or anywhere near me, this fills me with joy.
    Hell, I can't even afford any sword to train (let alone a real one) yet, but with these videos. I might be ready for some practice when I move elsewhere. So thank you

    excelent video guys, it was really easy to undestand even for a non-native english speaker, just one small suggestion about the sound quality, you could get a couple of those small wireless microphones that you can attach to your clothing, that would get you a better sound quality and they are not expensive. I'm suscribing to this channel, and really hope to see more of you guys

    • @BloodandIronHEMA
      @BloodandIronHEMA  8 лет назад +1

      +MPPRODUCTIONSger Zwerchhau, or in English, Thwart. Usually we're a big proprietor of calling techniques by their English names due to us being located in Canada, however Zwerchhau just sounds awesome so it's hard to call it anything else.

      Ah alright thank you :) The funny thing is that I am German and I never heard the term 'zwerch' :D
      just a minor tipp on the pronunciation. The way you say it it sounds a bit like 'Zwerg' which means dwarf. The 'ch' is (I think) a really difficult sound for English speaking people. It's sounds a bit like a spitting cat. I would recommend the German speech syntheses from Google translater while it's mostly rubbish the pronunciation of the 'ch' is pretty accurate. But like I said I never heard the term before. And it could be possible that your pronunciation is correct.
      P.S. It could also be that the translation is wrong and that it actually means Zwerg (dwarf). In German if there's a 'g' at the and it is sometimes pronounced 'ch' for example 'König' which means king is pronounced 'Könich'. And thus 'Zwerg' would become 'Zwerch'. And as far as I know that's the correct way to pronounce a 'g' at the and of a word. But it's mostly pronounced like a 'g' that is at the start of a word (so it would be pronounced like the 'g' in good.). In the past there weren't any rules how to write words and people just wrote them the way the heard them so it could be 'zwerch' or 'Zwerg'.But I think that it is translated correctly. Since Thwart makes sense for the movement. I hope it's clear what I meant since my English isn't really good so it may sound completely confusing and if that's the case just ignore it.
      Oh and sorry if I came of as an arsehole or a smart ass. That wasn't my intention :)

    • @acaristic93
      @acaristic93 8 лет назад

      +MPPRODUCTIONSger You have the manuscripts online at the Wiktenauer.com site.
      As for the term it could be due to the fact that the treatise was written a long time ago.
      German changed quite a bit as a language since then.
      You can go to the 'HEMAA Language Club' facebook group if you're interested in talking to HEMA folks about language-specific details(you can also go to the 'The HEMA Alliance' group for some more general info).

    Might not get a response since this is an older video lol, but I was wondering about how one would use the long sword as a mace? Is this assuming that the blade is dull or is it assuming that the one wielding it has gloves on of some sort to help offset the fact that he/she's gripping the blade?

    • @NothingYouHaventReadBefore
      @NothingYouHaventReadBefore 3 года назад

      Hi, I'm not one of the instructors but I'm familair with this technique! You grip the sword in a special way, the sharp being held between your fingers and palm, but without touching the bridges of it.

    • @Cleanpea
      @Cleanpea 3 года назад +1

      Like Berend said, but also, as long as your hand is stationary on the blade, it will not slice you. And, also again, like Dave says in London Longsword Academy: It is better to slice the hand and take the opportunity to win, than to get killed in a fight ;)

    Do you have to have a good strength before taking up any HEMA classes? I have nerve issues and I'm just wondering if it would be wise to give the classes a try or avoid them completely as my nerves do give out. Would that be a safety risk or do some people manage well regardless?

    • @BloodandIronHEMA
      @BloodandIronHEMA  7 лет назад +1

      We have a video on this very subject :) - ruclips.net/video/ev-j59Bl9rk/видео.html
      Short answer - strength helps, of course, but it's not the entire focus. You will build strength from simply training so it's a problem that fixes itself.

      Adam APL-ION blade is not sharp in our usual understanding. About a 2/3 of rhe blade is similar to chisel. Moreover, everyone tried to protect their hands with gloves or something from leather or metal.

    Hmmm, how do you not cut your hands when half swording or using it like a mace?

    • @MrSam1er
      @MrSam1er 8 лет назад +3

      +LabbyShepherd Puppy By not sliping on the blade. If you just hold it, it won't cut.

    • @pavelavtanski6538
      @pavelavtanski6538 8 лет назад +5

      +LabbyShepherd Puppy search "skallagrim half-swording" and watch it - you will be convinced.

    • @acaristic93
      @acaristic93 8 лет назад +1

      +LabbyShepherd Puppy You can try it out with a knife at home-if you just press it it won't cut you.
      But if you draw it across your skin it will.
      It's the same principle.
      It is possible to sharpen a sword so much that it cuts upon touch but in that case it's highly likely the edge will be quite brittle which leads to a lot of damage to it(something you'd want to avoid).

    • @labbyshepherdpuppy5943
      @labbyshepherdpuppy5943 8 лет назад +1

      aleksandar ristic I know that but the problem is that you might not have enough friction to hold the blade. I've now seen Skalla's video but now I'm thinking if your hands were sweaty would there be enough friction?
