- Fighting is often a game of who had the least mistakes. In this video we showcase several mistakes that lead to theoretical death in unarmoured longsword fighting!

Since we've had a lot of newer viewers here, it's worth bringing up again that we fight what's called "Bloßfechten", or Unarmoured fighting. Basically, we're fighting as if there's no major armour on our opponents, but rather simple cloth. You can read more about it here! - wiktenauer.com/wiki/Unarmored_fencing
But...but ..but what about the flat of my strong!!!!????
Redman A
I assume they would prefer that there's a 100% certainty that they're not dead (as opposed to 80%). :P
More realistic! Not always time to put on armor!
My understanding is that many of the manuals commonly used in HEMA instructed on judicial duels, which were unarmored.
It should be clarified that Bloßfechten is not "blobfechten". It is "Blossfechten".
Ok carry on.
Very nice.
I've underestimated how critical footwork is apparently.
For someone like me who just wants to start with HEMA it's good to see that even fighters like Julian and Erik make such mistakes. Shows that skill doesn't save you from doing something wrong. Helps against loosing motivation
I'm only a couple of months in, and man, there's a world of distance between me and Erik, or even some of the students who have only been around for a year.
It's still a blast, but in sparring my goal is more "last a couple more exchanges" or "score A hit" than actually winning my match.
This kind of "breakdown" videos are so awesome! Great job guys!
I love these kind of break down videos, excellent learning tools.
That shoulder thrust tho
Very nice slow motion breakdowns! I have tried the stomp to make my opponent react a few times, but I have never gotten it to work. One day. . .
The stomp works on a lot of people, but their reactions are not all the same. Some tighten-up, some retreat, some strike-out. You need to test them a little out of measure, so you know you just won't get tagged, or they won't just run away, then buy-in 100% after the stomp-fake and you've got a shot! Also, combined it with a fake high strike and go to the knee, since presumably, if you read your opponent correctly, the legs just tightened up! :)
The biggest mistake you can make is to fight against Julian
But it's so fun!
A good way to learn too, when you're up against a very skilled opponent.
Keep up the good work, guys! Everyone from dark age creations and fight night calgary use these videos as invaluable studying tools. Me included
Really, really, REALLY cool video! o useful!
nice video!
Congratulations on an excellent channel. I remember saking my fencing coach in 1977 about broadsword ... he said sure, if you don't mind a broken collar bone.
Can you tell me, please, are the HEMA Masks & knickers allowed for sport fencing? Most seem to meet CE and FIE regs. Yes, I'd like to not duplicate equipment, if possible. Same question for sport fencing knickers and jackets (with a plastron, extra padding, etc.). It looks like everything else is either an encumbrance if used for sport fencing (well, maybe a couple of discrete pads here & there), or essential and required for HEMA.
No manufacturers speak of this directly, and I suppose that each fencing school has a policy, but maybe a CE / FIE tag on a mask will be enough.
As someone forced to train solo due to time and location this helps sooooooo much!
Have you thought of a POV sparring video? I do those for boxing and it would be so epic!!!
I appreciate you all!!!
Some pov stuff would be epic
This! We can usually find/look up what the right way is - but seeing mistakes and having them pointed out is a lot like having your own personal instructor. It is something to keep in mind when doing drills and really puts the basics that you learn in to perspective to see what happens when you slip up. It really helps me, at least, understand why the fundamentals are, well, fundamental.
I think Skallagrim has done a couple with his go-pro, but those are more entertainment than instructional.
What is the best way to handle retreating opponents?
I'm sparring with a bunch of dudes who don't know anything. I barely know anything, myself. However, I'm trying to practice practical use of technique and form.
However, I constantly run into either overly aggressive fighters (I can usually deal with them) or retreating fighters. (By the time I strike, and take a passing step to strike again, they've back peddles to where I'm outspaced)
What's the protocol there, chief?
Try a gathering step. So instead of lunging you bring your rear foot to your lead foot and then lunge to get some extra distance and try to catch them that way. Either that or run them into an obstacle. Or just respond to an attack they make in the same measure. That`s all I can think of.
The Brewster I'll give it a go.
It's incredibly frustrating, because I want to show them the moves and combos I learn from manuscript or videos, but they don't take interest because flailing their swords is "working" for them. Lol.
And I won't lie, retreating fighters are my bane right now. They usually outspaced me, then void a move and cut low. It's quite irritating, considering I know I'm trying 100% harder than them, but seeing less result, in the form of "kill shots".
to be fair, if they`re constantly retreating they`re basically losing the fight anyway :P you don`t have to kill to win in some scenarios. Failing that you can wait for them to close into you, instead of chasing them down.
William McAdams unscrew your pommel and throw it at them
After they commit to retreating for the second or perhaps third time, plant yourself and wait for them. Eventually, they will feel silly.
These breakdowns are very clear, except for the fact that I can't easily discern which of the fully black clad figures is called Julian or Erik or Stephen. Other than that, very helpful. Thanks.
A lot of these are "blink and you'll miss it" moves. I had to rewatch most of them several times before I could really identify what went wrong, even with the breakdown.
Ryan Cauffman You can try watching at a slower speed; I changed it to 0.25 speed in the settings.
Would you guys be willing to make a video showing some bastard/hand and a half swords?
Dark wolf, it depends on what you mean by that; a bastard sword could mean anything.. longsword, arming sword, montante... Nobody has a clear agreement to what a bastard sword is as far as I know.
Longswords probably are what you could call a hand and a half sword.
So do you mean a sword longer or shorter than the feders we're using?
Reese Pollock I guess a bit shorter what iv been calling a bastard sword is a size inbetween a one handed arming and a long sword (mainly based on hilt size) I'm relatively new to Hema so sorry if this was confusing.
Dark wolf no worries, it's just fun to talk about definitions. I don't think we have anything between. I'll ask if anyone wants to do arming sword next time, and see if we get any good footage out of that. Then you can interpolate between those. We train Meyer for both of those weapons though, so you know it's gonna pretty much look the same single handed or two handed.
Yer watchin' it fam
On 2:05 - there is acually a feint like that described in some manuscripts, so its technically not a "mistake".
The mistake was Erik overparrying the feint, and then breaking posture
