    I know for a fact that H.K. Porter 42-inch bolt cutters will only put the tiniest scratch on the shackle, and that's after the jaws have begun to deform and the handles are on the verge of breaking. And the scratch was practically insignificant, hardly noticeable. I've seen people try to cut one with bolt cutters on 3 diff occasions; you cannot tell them that it won't work lol, they have to try anyway.

    My son tried to cut my Abloy padlock when I lost the key. The jaws broke on my expensive pair of 30 inch Record bolt cutters. It wasn't this model & the shackle was about 10mm diameter, but Abloy padlocks must be about the best you can get. A 5 inch mains angle grinder finally cut it, but as far as I'm aware angle grinders will cut almost any. My bolt cutters had a 1/4 inch chunk taken out of the jaws, so the padlock ruined them. Bit of a shame that my son is very strong & had one end of the bolt cutter handle against the ground for leverage, or the bolt cutters might have survived. Some padlock.

    • @michaelthomas3105
      @michaelthomas3105 5 лет назад +3

      It seems the most expensive bolt cutters, like Kren 49 inch ones, probably might cut a 10 mm shackle on an Abloy lock, but they might not cut a 14 or 15mm Abloy shackle.I'd not risk ruining bolt cutters again unless they were cheap "throw away" bolt cutters, though Record is not an inexpensive brand & pretty good for most tools. Kren bolt cutters have little cutting edges than can be replaced, not the entire jaws.

    • @eicydee3212
      @eicydee3212 Год назад

      It depends on how skilled the person is using a grinder (some people apply way too little pressure for fast cutting). And how powerful the grinder is. It may be possible to cut it off in like half a minute.
      This is just unavoidable with a steel lock, as any kind of steel - hardened, alloyed or not - can be cut with a grinder quite easily.

  • @u042
    @u042 8 лет назад +3

    If this lock is protecting a real value and the chain holds an attack, just grind it. The trick is, protect the lock from grinding by take out the space for the grinder to reach. The only way to do it. If the value is high enough of the protected item, it's done in a jiffy anyway with PROPER TOOLS. Time and space is the real key here. When locking a bike, place the lock high, that is lack of counterforce for the bolt cutter and a dangling lock is hard to get a real hands on job on. The real key: PLACEMENT and SPACE. Sometimes it is better to cut the object the chain attach to.There.

  • @pacovl46
    @pacovl46 11 лет назад +1

    Well, for one thing a hacksaw operates in a different way. Just because a regular hacksaw can't get through it doesn't mean bolt cutters can't either. Take a tungsten carbide saw and the story will take a different turn. Take hydraulic bolt cutters and it will get through it. It takes about 13 tones of pressure, though.

    • @smokyislay
      @smokyislay 8 лет назад +4

      Cutting torch is cheaper than 300 euro bolt cutters and works to any lock. Maybe it is just me but I don't really see a lot of point discussing about expensive tools needed to destroy the lock. If the lock is somewhere in less crowded place and the item you are protecting would pay the effort of getting 300 euro tools to access it then you need additional alarms and surveillance anyway.

      I bet I could cut right through that thing with my cheap Chinese pair of 42" bolt cutters

    • @Bialy_1
      @Bialy_1 5 лет назад +3

      @@Brute4rce1111 the problem is that the bolt cutters jaws need to be harder than the material they trying to cut, so from your description i would say that your cheap Chinese tool gonna fail miserably. Search on YT movie "Gerda Zircon 116 vs nożyce do cięcia prętów." its atempt to cut 6th grade padlock but i doubt this padlock shackle is made from much weaker material.

    • @Brute4rce1111
      @Brute4rce1111 5 лет назад

      @@Bialy_1 I do agree that hardness does partly matter when we are talking about cutting tools, but in my experience, even though I have dented my 42 inch bolt cutters jaws, I was still able to "cut" the shackle. My theory behind this is that the jaws are only going to dent so far before they work hardened themselves to the cross section stress level involved in the cut. After that, the stress/strain of those competing alloys start to experience fractural toughness. And of course, the shackle being the harder metal, will fracture under the extreme narrowed force of the cutters head. It's kinda the same concept of a lead 223 bullet zipping through steel except the lead does not work hardened, it's simply the forces involved that really matter.

  • @scorchedearth1451
    @scorchedearth1451 6 лет назад

    Simple violence will not do the job. Better use brains to find weaknesses.
    The disks in locks like these are held in place with a thick bottom plate, which is pushed in tight.
    In some locks this plate can be pulled out, so all lock parts fall out.
    You would have to make a pulley which locks into the locking disk, and then starts pulling.
    how well would this lock do under this attack?

    • @L2M2K2
      @L2M2K2 5 лет назад

      The bottom “plate” in these beasts is a several millimetres thick threaded insert (with a small screw “hidden” behind one of the legs of the shackle to prevent one from unscrewing it while the lock is locked. So no luck on that end, either. (When open, and after removing the locking screw, the threaded insert is opened with the blunt end of the key... but unfortunately there is no Integrated screwdriver in the key to open the screw so there is still at least one thing they could do better for fully tool free disassembly for legitimate users ;-)

  • @wb5mgr
    @wb5mgr 11 лет назад

    I noticed that nobody ever attacked it with heat... Not many blokes are walking around with liquid N2 but lots of folks have small portable oxy-acetylene cutting rigs... Even if you could just heat a section of the shackle enough to ruin the temper so it could easily be cut. Also, I might point out that the chain or shackle has to be just as indestructible or the lock is no good.

    • @eicydee3212
      @eicydee3212 Год назад

      Sure, no lock is indestructible. Attacking it with heat usually takes time, however, unless one brings uncommon tools like a portable induction heater. And it's conspicuous.
      For Abloy cylinder locks (I don't know if they also fit the padlocks - probably not) there are even special carbide tipped milling bits. With a powerful cordless drill, they can drill open the lock in seconds:

      With such tools, one can break pretty much any lock.
      The first pull test in the video shows it breaks at about 90 kN (9 tons) of pulling force. Most hydraulic tools are much stronger than that.
      It may even be that some pretty primitive attacks could rip it off. I'm thinking of threading a Zylon rope through it - it is more stiff than a steel cable and a 10mm rope holds 14 tons, attaching a big piece of metal to it (like a 45 pound weight plate) and slamming it down to yank on the lock.

Protec2 is quite overkill for locking up your goods, most criminals are nutjobs and don't even bother picking because they don't know how. They just smash and destroy everything but the cylinder.

      I think this is one he can't. If he can reliably and quickly pick an Abloy Protec2 core open, that would be utterly sensational. As far as I know, no-one has yet been able to do so. There is possibly a way to decode the lock with some very specialized tools, but it's a lengthy process that could hardly be described as "picking" anymore.

    I had one of these securing my motocross bike. The twats got though the ground anchor. Dragged my poor old bike off with the chain and padlock still attached.

      No lock can resist a good angle grinder.
      It's going to take several minutes though, and it will be awfully noisy and flashy in case you were planning to break the lock stealthily.

    The awful truth of padlocks is that the angle grinder with a zip disk - OBSOLETED EVERY PADLOCK. And now with ni-cad and li-ion batteries, cordless angle grinders are totally portable. Buy a 12 gauge at Cabellas.

      Hahaha tools are very useful the thing is that also thief's can use it.. like a gun is safe to protect you.. but criminals can use it too... It's complicated.. use some pair of padlocks and they will search some better and easy option.
