  • Find out how Squire makes the incredibly tough and high-security SS80 and new SS100 padlocks. Please note that the SS100 shown in this video is an open-shackle design that was available at the time of shooting; the SS100CS is the closed-shackle version that's used on the world's best and toughest motorcycle chains from Pragmasis, Almax and of course Squire itself.

    • @bennettsbikesocial

      We're coming at these products from the point of view of motorcycle security, where the picking of locks is virtually non-existent. Having said that, the single-barrel SS80 with dimple key core that LPL demonstrated proved resilient even under the ideal conditions of his bench; he described it as "an absolute beast of a lock".
      He goes on to say that he can't imagine what you'd lock up with it - as a motorcyclist, I can tell you... with a heavy-duty chain the SS80 he featured (the smaller version of this double-barrelled monster of a lock) offers a real deterrent to all but the most determined and time-rich thieves. Here's a summary of our tests of security kit: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/security/motorcycle-chains-and-locks/how-to-choose-the-best-motorcycle-security
      Many links get auto-quarantined, and if they're just a blind link to another video, with no context from the person posting it, it's unlikely it'll be picked up as worth making live, but here it is: ruclips.net/video/h27t7elN5Qs/видео.html

    • @bennettsbikesocial

      @Pro White Podcasts Remember that this is the open shackle version. The production models will have a closed shackle available too, for use on chains. The chain will almost always be the easier point of attack. I haven't had a chance to put the 362 next to the SS100, but looking at videos of it in people's hands, the Squire appears to be heftier, so should be more resistant to attack. In our testing of the SS80 with a 22mm chain, the chain is still easier to attack than the lock (and that's the smaller one than this.)
      If other lock picking channels are to be believed, the Abloy could be picked quicker (with the right tools) than LPY did the SINGLE barrel of the SS80, let alone both on the SS100. But if that's not true, picking is still next to irrelevant when it comes to motorcycle theft, as long as it's a quality lock (cheap ones can be too easy, or have way too few variations).

    as much as i admire how long it takes to make such a lock, i believe the roundlock has more engineering inside of it. the way i see it, squire have made a padlock, but bigger and stronger. whilst pragmassis have made a compact, lightweight, portable beast of a padlock. which takes too long to grind than any chain

    I have a question about the testing on the SS100 version. As is evident from the diagrams, the shackle is held in by two ball bearings, each of which is actuated by one of the lock cylinders through a cam, so if one of the two cylinders is unlocked, only one ball bearing holds the shackle in place. Was any of the testing (tensile strength of the shackle, for example) been done when only one of the cylinders is in the locked position, and the other is unlocked? The resistance of the lock to physical attacks when one of the cylinders is unlocked is relevant if it is to be used as a dual-custody lock, in which case someone with a key to one of the cores must be considered as a potential attacker.

    • @Fanta....
      @Fanta.... 2 года назад +1

      the cylinders are key retaining, so unless you left a key in one of the locks, that is not possible.

  • @cedrichughes3980

    Why is the new padlock not shielded?.
    If not it how will it be any stronger than the SS80?.
    Is this a marketing ploy to get people to purchase this version then bring out the shielded version?. Only asking.

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Cedric... do you mean the shackle's not shielded? If so, the lock I filmed was a pre-production version, but it is a non-shielded model. Squire make both versions, and this of course isn't the one you'd use for chaining a motorcycle up. It's the same as the SS80, but bigger (so tougher), and of course it has two barrels. In the building industry, the longer pick time will give this lock a higher rating. In motorcycle crime, picking isn't really an issue, and until chains get even tougher than the 22mm versions we have now, that's the more likely point of attack. John

      @@bennettsbikesocial So with battery powered angle grinders there is no lock that can't be destroyed basically? I just bought an Italian lock (Viro) because the seller said it was the best lock outthere. So the best thing is really to combine a set of things together? Park the vehicle in busy area's, make sure the lock can't reach the ground and get the lock as thick as possible (even on relative light bikes)?

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  3 года назад +1

      @@JorisMaas With time, yes, so you're absolutely right - a layered approach to security is the best bet, which is why the Met police recommend a dic lock on the front, a chain on the rear and a cover. But be proportional - in a high crime area you should take the most precautions. But don't spend your life stressing... buy the best you can afford and can carry, use it. then just enjoy riding!
