This video rocks. Just got charged $100 for an oil change at Pep Boys and decided never again. I’ll come back and update after doing this myself next time!
Small tip, don’t remove oil fill cap till after you remove drain plug. This way less splurge of oil initially when plug removed, then take filler cap off.
Thanks for the straightforward video. I’m almost looking forward to getting this done now. Lol. I’m used to my 02 Frontier where you have to twist your arm around a bunch of stuff to take the filter off and it makes a complete mess of everything. It’s not hard but this seems like a way more oil change friendly environment.
I just did the first oil change on my 2021 CX-5 (at 800 miles), and I noticed that Mazda had less than 5 qts of oil in the engine, and it's suppose to be 5.1 qts. I also replaced the original oil drain plug (and washer) with a magnetic oil drain plug (and washer). After putting in that 5 qt. bottle of synthetic oil, put in another .4 qt to bring the oil up to the full mark. I also made sure to put oil into the filter before installing, and lubricated the gasket with some oil. I replaced the old filter with the recommended Mazda filter. Since there have been some cars damaged while in the possession of dealerships, I decided to pass on the complimentary oil change. Besides, there's enough ground clearance to get under the CX-5 to do the oil change, especially after using a 1.5" thick board under each front tire, giving me about 9" of ground clearance.
thats some paranoia there. I commend you for checking everything to the T, and I guess for many new drivers or first time owning a new car its only normal. But I wouldnt worry too much about it. Engine break in, oil burning, and other reasons why it was short a very small amount. That isn't going to damage the engine, heck if it was missing 1 to 2 qts of oil it wouldnt damage it. Only time I've really seen engine failure if it was completely gone of oil.
@@moialder252 My experience with the CX-5 is that the oil level should be half-way between the two dots on the stick. When the engine is hot, the level will usually end up between half-way and full. This is exactly where it should be. Mazda engineers know exactly what the correct oil amount is. Follow the manual and everything will be fine.
Good video. A few suggestions: Never, ever use a Fram oil filter! Lube the sealing ring with NEW oil. Fill the filter with new oil before installing. Use a new gasket on the drain plug and torque to 23-30 ft lbs.
Lesson learned: I change the filter first. After dropping a slippery filter into a catch pan of hot oil, (splashing oil all over), I now change to filter first.
Thanks for the video. I hate the Mazda underbody protection panels. I would recommend making sure there are no leaks before reinstalling panel, remove filter first and fill the new one with oil, change crush gasket each time, use genuine Mazda filter for warranty, video the full change if you are doing it yourself and keep your receipts for warranty.
With Mazda the scheduled maintenance includes tire rotations and other things at different intervals like spark plugs, air filters, brake inspections, system flushes, etc
@@jstan022 tire rotation is already its own maintenance item in the screen. Scheduled maintenance is basically tracking the same thing as the oil change monitor.
Correct, the all of Mazdas scheduled services align with every 5K miles just like the oil change interval. Oil changes occur in each scheduled maintenance visit. The separate tire rotation marker could be as a reminder to other mechanics if you go somewhere else for an oil change or if you are doing maintenance yourself. Keep in mind also that oil changes can sometimes be 5K miles OR every 3 months depending on how much you drive. This could also be why they are separate.

You can usually take it to any oil change/tire center to dispose of it. You can also check with your local waste management to see if they have a disposal location. It shouldn’t go into a regular trash can as it’s considered an environmental hazard. Hope this helps!
Yes, I seem to have that issue as well. I basically removed a little over 4 quarts of oil, and put in about the same amount. The dipstick is all over the place with the reading.

This oil change was such a pain. 0w-20 oil has such a watery consistency and wants to splash everywhere. Oil filter underneath ALWAYS makes a mess. Gotta make sure your pan is large enough and/or far enough back to catch the oil as it shoot diagonally from the oil pan, then slowly creeps back as the oil pressure dissipates. My Jetta oil change is clean and easy. Drain plug hole diameter is smaller, so draining oil is much more predictable and doesnt shoot out like a rocket. Also uses 5w-40 so it doesnt splash like water. Oil filter is right on top of the motor, so it never makes a mess and is easy to change. Some people like to think Japanese brands are superior and it absolutely blows my mind
I changed mine a few days ago using the same Motor oil but different filter . I poured 4.5 qt into my engine . I reset my dash , but now and then I still get the low oil pressure lights on . How strange. Did you experience that issue ?
