Learn how to replace every fluid in your car: ruclips.net/video/t7JCh7PHoDc/видео.html My new video covers how to do an oil change, transmission fluid change, coolant flush, power steering fluid flush, brake fluid flush and bleed, differential fluid change, transfer case fluid change, grease the suspension, and finally add washer fluid properly!
This is one of the best skills anyone can develop. Some people want to improve the world by finidng the cure to cancer, others by solving world hunger, but you are helping by sharing your knowledge. Thank you
Hey Chris, my dad was in prison when I learned to drive. You have honestly been there for me when I most needed it. You taught me how to buy a car, how to fix it and now how to care for it. Thank you so much
My dad never taught me anything about cars because "Girls don't need to know that" I moved to another country by myself and thanks to you now I've been able to change my battery and understand how a battery works and also now how to do the maintenance, thank you so much for this videos, you are a life saver
This video has trained me to change the oil on the 3 cars in my driveway. I’ve been doing it myself for about a year. I still rewatch before most oil changes just to make sure I’m not forgetting anything. Incredibly thorough and great advice. Not only has saved me money on oil changes but gives me peace of mind knowing the job is done right. Thanks Chrisfix for all you do!
I am 65 years old and I have never touched under the bonnet of a car to do anything other than to check the oil levels in my entire life. Times are now tough and I cant afford to get the car serviced so thought I would have ago. I don't have jacks or stands so i used the suggestion of driving the car up onto the gutter, it was still pretty tight under there but i was able to wiggle under there, and let me tell you at 65 that was no mean feat. Thank god for RUclips and Chris Fix !! First problem was not having a breaker bar or a piece of steel pipe that my wrench could fit into so I just put my foot on the short wrench and did a leg press and the bolt came off just fine. My mistake was letting the bolt drop into the oil pan, I forgot about the crush washer which separated from the bolt, it took me a while to figure out why there was an oil leak later when I refilled it.. doh. Then I had to get the crush washer back on and I had already filled the car with oil, so that turned into an engine oil flush because for the life of me I couldn't get the bolt with the crush washer on it into the hole and threaded properly with the oil pissing out all over the place. What was worrying about that was the oil that I had just put into the engine was just as black as the old oil but I am ignoring that for the time being. I have ordered a Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve which I hope will make future oil changes a lot easier Second problem was no tool to remove the oil filter , so rather than hammer a screw driver through it to make a handle I decided to drill through it which i thought was a bit safer than hitting it with a hammer, sadly the oil poured out all over the drill and me but I did get it off in the end. Third problem I think was that I forgot to put oil in the new oil filter, when I tried to start the car it turned over with a slapping sound from the engine then stopped , tried again and same thing, I got out and checked for leaks and the oil level and all was ok, got back in and tried again and the car started, at that point I was able to stop crying. All is now well., not really sure what that was all about but the car is running fine now. The moral of this long winded story is that you should always follow the experts advice and have the right tools available and follow instructions to the letter. Thanks Chris you are a legend !!!
Very nice! Im 29 years old and just did my first oil change a month ago watching ChrisFix do it. Living in NYC i did it outside of an autozone parking lot cause its hard to do it on the streets with cars whizzing past you.
Bro thank you so much. I'm a 16 year old girl with a dad who knows NOTHING about cars. I'm looking forward to changing my own oil, this video really helped me. I'm so grateful I found your channel bro, your the best
I did my first oil change today. It took two days to get the right tools but it all came together on the third day. This was the first car related thing I've ever done besides driving them so it felt nice to do it and this video helped a ton.
I’m a 16 year old girl interested in going into automotive I’ve been studying things but this will be my first hands on thing I do. You did great at explaining I’m going to try this soon, thank you!
@@thinshadow551 hey sorry for the late response I had people offer me help but it’s actually pretty easy the autozone guy gave me a completely wrong oil filter tho so that kind of messed me up had to back track and put the other one back on to drive down there and get a new one and I forgot to put the old o ring back on so oil came out but after I figured out it was the o ring I put it on and put more oil in drive and got the right one and it was done!
I did my first oil change today! I'm not too mechanically inclined but watching this video made it a breeze. I thank god you are alive and make this type of content because other wise I would be paying for my oil changes. I really does feel nice when you've done something on your own car and saved a bit of money. Thanks!!
Jonathan Ferrol Lol good job but im 14 and i know basically everything top to bottom on car ita kinda crazy how people hardly know how to jack up their car or change oil or a tire lol i dont get it its just kind of common sense but oh well not everybody is mechanically inclined but everyone starts somewhere the more stuff you replace yourself the higher quality parts you will be using not just some super cheap oil that they did a half ass job on and probably dudnt even change the filter oh and dont forget to replace your transmission fluid and differential fluid and if u have a 4×4 there is 2 differentials and the trasfer case should be in the front. Transmssion rebuilds aint cheap just to be safe replace the oil every 50k and use high quality synthetic oil.
I’m a lady and I appreciate these videos especially because I’ve asked countless times and no one in my life has taken the time to help teach me 🙄 thanks!
I bought a racheting wrench for taking off the battery terminal bolts to scrape the crud off to start the vehicle. Within 2 weeks I own 2 torque wrenches, 3 sized ratchets, 250 sockets, car ramps, multimeter, 3 ton jack with 2 stands and a creeper, and a 20qt drain pan. That escalated quickly.
I watched this video about seven times before doing my first oil change. I'm only sixteen right now, but your channel has not only inspired me to do an oil change when needed, and get better products for the same price, but completely rethink the way I look at vehicles. I know this is an older video, but I look forward to seeing more from you. And btw, the oil change took a 2009 ram 1500 from somewhat unpredictable and vibrating to smooth, predictable and quiet. I did the change with my dad. He had been talking about taking his truck into the shop to switch to synthetic, but I showed him this video, and we did it ourselves. Just a not so short story, and a huge thank you for pretty much changing my future for the better.
misc channeler Hey bud, I’m 15 and I have been working on cars for a while now. For my 15th b-day my mom gave me a 91 Jeep XJ Cherokee limited. Ever since then I have made it perform like new from factory! Even before then I used to live in the woods and my dad was a mechanic so I just watched him and helped him ever since I was like 10. If your dad is a mechanic, I suggest you ask him some questions about how engines work and such. It will build that father-son relationship just like me and my dad and you will find out later in life that doing some dirty work can be a fun thing. I remember one time I was 13 and the Jeep that I now own had something wrong that had to do with the coolant. He was trying to burb the liquid so he could fill it and empty it and he was having a bit of trouble. I came up with an awesome idea on how to help him and it worked instantly and it was running perfect. I’ll tell you one thing there is almost no greater feeling then getting told that you had a great idea to help your father fix a car when you are 13. Obviously I’m not trying to force this on you, I would never do that to anyone, but I think that if you liked this video, you should work on vehicles a little more. Personally driving my Jeep and working on it are my favorite things to do in the world!
I'm almost 16 and recently got a job as a mechanic's assistant. So, I had to learn all of the basic things of course. My knowledge from your video(s) impressed my boss and my parents because now I can changed my oil and theirs. Thank you so much for your videos! You're a lifesaver!
I have watched so many of your videos over and over. I am about to do my first oil change on my CRV. Thanks to you, I have the confidence to start maintaining my car (fluid changes, brakes). Love this channel.
@@chrisfix it was awesome. I know it is trivial but only a few things I have done have made me feel that accomplished. My kid David still loves your books too
As a 14-year-old car enthusiast, I learned better how to do an oil change when I watched this video. I want to be a Car Mechanic and want to fix cars myself one day. But your videos have helped me understand the concept of fixing cars and especially changing oil. Thank you for your helpful video tutorials 😎👍🏾.
I wanna be a car mechanic too!! I just like fixing cars n stuff, I don't know like different types of cars other than like gas and the basic names like "car" or "truck" but I'm gonna learn soon! I'm going to college this year so I'm buying all my tools now and my mom needed an oil change so I'm watching this video to change it for her
A couple of extra points to add; 1: when placing the oil pan under the oil sump plug bolt make sure you have the oil pan positioned to compensate for the direction of flow of the oil when it comes out of the hole, especially if the bolt is angled slightly. If it comes out very quickly on an angle it could miss the pan completely. 2: If it’s a windy day and your outdoors; when the oil becomes a trickle at the tail end of draining the wind can blow it all over your driveway - place an old towel or blanket under the oil pan to catch any mess. Yes I learnt both of these the hard way and yes my step dads new driveway still has the oil stains that can’t be removed!
I remember my junior year of high school someone made fun of me for not knowing how to change my oil, now I’m changing everything from brake and suspension parts, engine parts, and even changed a head gasket. Dedication is a powerful tool. Also Chris and Eric the car guy helped a ton.
Did you attend to a motor study class or did you just learn all that from self-teaching and watching yt videos? I was considering to attend UK college as part time before I get my first car but having a 10hr shift job daily makes it impossible so all I have is the internet to learn and I'm not sure if it's enough, I am very dedicated to learn and ever since I bought provisional license I'm stuck watching youtubers such as chrisfix for hours. I can't wait to get a car and try all that myself.
Patryk Ochnio everything I learned was on RUclips from Chris Fix and Eric the Car Guy (I don’t like Scotty Kilmer), I would literally study their videos. Part of my motivation was watching my dad pay $400 just to have an alternator changed when the part itself is only about $100. I would just stick to the simple things first and work your way up the difficulty level, like I started with oil changing and then brakes. Good luck
As a 30 year old man with no mechanical skills, you’ve just helped me change my first lot of oil. I want to keep learning from your videos so I can teach my children how to maintain their own vehicles when the time is right - something I wish my father forced me to learn 😂 Thank you, Chris.
Just changed my oil using this as my main guide. Here are some tips from my experience: 1. Remove the oil cap before removing the plug to allow for better flow. 2. It's very scary going under that car, especially if like me, you bought the cheapest jack stands. Not for claustrophobics. 3. Things will get oily, especially the oil filter. Screwing that on was a whole adventure. To avoid that you can skip pre-filling the oil filter. 4. My plug didn't have a washer on it, I still installed one since it was supposed to have one. One year later I realized it did, Ford just come with an integrated one, so I removed the washer on the next change. 5. You can make a funnel from an old bottle, it will even have a cap on it. 6. Careful NOT to drop anything inside the engine when the oil cap is open or you will have to fish it out. 7. Unscrewing the oil plug can be hard, even with a breaker bar. Just can't get any leverage under the car. 8. Bring a blanket to lie on so ants dont crawl on you. 9. Use the new oil bottle to store the old oil in and take it to a local garage or a recycling station. 10. While you are under the car its a good time to check for rust and any other things you see going bad.
tighten up the new oil filter with the wrench, not with your oily bare hand. I usually drain the oil, have my lunch, let them drop for 1/2 hrs.& then refill.
Thank you so much for your videos! I did my first oil change today with my brother (he also had never done it), and apart from struggling a bit when removing the filter, it went down perfectly and we spent a good moment together. Really awesome.
Dude you are probably the #1 car teacher on RUclips to beginners. Love how you do every step. You make me realize that cars don't have to be so scary and confusing!!!
I changed my oil for the first time using this video! It was really well detailed and now I will be able to change all of my cars going forward and even help out my friends. Appreciate what you do my guy!
With my dad living 2,000 miles away, I don't have anyone to teach me stuff like this. My car is well over 200,000 miles so it needs a lot of love. Thank you for posting this content! I love the look people give me when they see a 4'11" girl workin on her car :P
Kaytee Baca most independent shops will change your oil and filter give a complete inspection of the car rotate the tires for about $35.00. Rotate your tires every other oil change.
Kaytee baca I used to do quite a bit on my car, I'm only 2 inches taller than you :-) And yes, the looks are funny sometimes. Last time I bought wiper blades the guy in AutoZone offered to put them on for me. He actually looked a bit disappointed when I said, "Nah, I got it. I'm doing a bunch of stuff tomorrow." After I got home I realized, damn, poor guy looked upset. Maybe he was hoping to spend more time with me lol.
I really appreciate this video! As a girl I was never taught like my brother how to do this stuff. I want to be able to do things on my own. Thanks so much!!!
Good on you for learning anyway! It’s maddening to see how often mechanics will try to cheat women in particular by quoting them higher prices than normal for even basic repairs and maintenance.
@@Fluffisnoterm forreal- and then everytime you go getting a "this, that, and the other thing are SOOO dirty! and broken! your whole car is broke i can fix that for bout 250" lol
You are a great human being. A gift to society. I'm too busy to try this, as much as I'd like to, but it's amazing to know that at least I can. Thank you so much for your vids!
On learning how to change oil, I moved up to upgrading lighting system, work on exhaust, breaks and finally graduated years later to opening up the engine.
I was intimidated when I saw that the video was 20mins long. But I sat and watched this “in-depth” video. You have the the confidence to go out and do my 1st oil change. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Chris! I've looked at your videos years ago and I've been meaning to learn how to do my own oil for... over half a decade now. Today was the day I finally did it, and I listened to your video all the while. Thank you for showing me just how easy it is to make your vehicle truly your own. Okay maybe exaggerating a bit, but this is definitely the first step! Keep being awesome!
Quick tip: sorry if it was already mentioned below. When removing the old oil filter, make sure the rubber O ring of the old filter is removed with the old filter. And be sure to check that the new filter has a new rubber O ring. I remember to do this all the time, since way back in 1983 when my dad did not check this, we were spraying oil down the street after a oil change. This tip has stuck with me since then and it's the first thing I check when I remove the old filter.
Did my 1st oil change my self today . Used this videos as preparation . Thanks dude going into it I felt alot more comfortable and over all I felt like it went back quick and easy . Car : 2004 Toyota matrix 5 speed just hit 200,*** miles !!!
I made a comment several minutes ago on changing brake pads and rotors and figured you might have something as simple as an oil change video and even though this was longer than the brake pad and rotor video, I’ve seen other videos that show oil changes show the same, similar moves, steps, all that stuff, but you still help in the long line of videos I’ve watched of changing your oil on the fact that it can be done as simple as your videos make it, and one thing I liked about both your brake pad and rotor video, and this, is that you’re very detailed and explanatory with stuff, which makes something that people think is a complicated thing, relatively easy to understand and then end up doing yourself after you’ve seen the video which I think is cool. The only thing I’ve always had an issue with before, ever actually taking out and trying to change my oil is, between the ramps, the oil, the paper towels, and the tools and the filter, you either have to purchase everything initially if you don’t already have them and you’re just fresh and new getting into this, which I’m fairly certain would be a decent amount of money to put down on all those things, but if you have at least a couple of tools, at least, the unfortunate thing that I do, at least understand myself is, I like you would use the ramps, and hold down my parking brake, which I use in my car whenever I park. Anyways, I just naturally started doing it one day with my 2012 Mazda three, which was the previous car I owned, so now I put the parking brake on with my 05 Honda CRV, but one of the only issues with ever changing your oil is the initial money put down for all the things you need to cover it being done, but usually after you’ve acquired the general amount of stuff, I would think that screw in plugs that you would replace that you initially pull out when the oil Shoots out quick like someone who’s been holding in their pee for an hour and a half, buying a new oil, plug, the oil itself and the filter. As long as you have everything else are the I would think less expensive things to have to get down on if you intend on doing it your own, and sometimes the money isn’t always there to afford Purchasing everything down right, but the one thing I can understand and agree on with other people is that once you have either a couple things that you need for doing it before hand or once you put down the initial money for everything you need with I’d say 2/3 of those things being the tools, paper, towels, and ramps, the new oil screw, the oil and the filter are really the only things that are that you have to buy every new time around when replacing it so all the initial things you have to put money down. If you don’t already kind of pay for them selves over time and you’ll have them for all of your other vehicles as well. I actually do eventually want to do my own oil at least once just to know that I did it, and that I could say it was maybe as easy as somebody else said it was, because in general, I know how to change a tire, and I’ve had to put spares on my prior vehicles Overtime, so that was one thing I knew how to do, jumpstarting, another persons, car with jumper cables, and changing a car battery, now my previous vehicle, my 2012, Mazda three, and my 2004 Kia spectra before that, had easier set ups for the car battery, but the car battery in my current vehicle has a lot more in casing and parts around it, so I’m sure sooner or later I’m going to have to learn how to Uncage it so to speak, and be able to take it out, and then reverse the unchanging with a new battery, and be up-to-date with this current vehicle. But I would like to be able to sometime down the road, be able to do that, and say much like anybody else that’s told me how easy it is, add that as like, if you were adding more experience or another job to your résumé, just be able to add another thing to a vehicle that I can do that’s relatively easy that even if it took a short while, I can say I did, and whenever I actually have the money to afford buying some of the initial things that help with the set and start up of it, I think that would be cool, and I myself would use the ramps as well.
Ive done half of it today on my daughters Camry. However..Im not strong enough to get the filter off!😔😤😢💄🔧💪💅😔😤 Any suggestions other then the actually tools used here?!?
and if you have a cartridge type filter, make sure to replace the gasket on the cap with the filter. most cartridge filters comes with one of these extra gaskets. thought it'd be worth a mention as some people forget that step
I want to thank you Chris, you encouraged me to change my oil in my VW Golf and save some money. You are a great person. Now I need to change my clockspring, I saw your video about it and I will do it by myself to save a ton of money!!!
Did my first oil change today following your video! Didnt take longer than half an hour, suprisingly fast and easy! The one thing that took the most time was just waiting for all the old oil to drain out as much as possible, and finding the darn correct model for the oil filter at stores, no one seemed to sell the one i needed for my car, but I found it eventually. Car ran just fine and as usual after, no warning lights, no leaks. Thank you!
Chris Fix, the past two weekends I replaced my brakes, did a transmission fluid change, and a coolant Flush on my 2012 Corolla with 60K miles. Because of all your vids, you saved me over $500 plus, I got to keep my brand new wrench set, drill bit set, and jack stands. I look forward to doing my own synthetic oil change when it needs it. Thanks!
My tips: #1 - Buy your oil from Wal-Mart. WAY cheaper there then any Auto parts store, by like $5 or more. #2 - Don't buy FRAM Oil filter's unless you get the Ultra Premium one. They are held together by cardboard. #3 - Read the dipstick of your car on a level surface, not a sloped one. #4 - After you've changed your oil twice, use the old plastic jug to transport your oil, because it stays sealed and won't leak if you have a car. Best in the 5 quart jugs. I think that's all I got. Nice video Chris. Gonna send this to some co-workers. :)
Buying oil from Walmart might be Cheaper but it’s also a good idea to look at auto stores and see if you can find deals on oil and filter. It could be cheaper overall in some cases by $10-$15
Usually the people that don't have never worked on cars, but hopefully if they give it a shot because of the videos, they can see the benefits of doing your own work!
i have performed over 20 oil changes on a variety of cars. yet i still come here to watch just because of how soothing and educational chris is (call me weird) i love it.
I've heard Cinnamon Leaf or rosemary Essential Oils are good for ur engine, they also increase ur car's hp - this is something ur parents never teach u
This brings me back. This is the first video I watched that got me to start working on my car. Now oil changes take me 10-20 min. And I’ve done all kinds of work on my car because of your videos. I now Got a decent collection of tools and knowledge thanks to you👍🏻❤️😁
Hey man, just came back to this video to say thanks a lot. I changed my oil on my 2017 honda accord today for the first time. No issues at all because of your clear instructions all the way through from ramping the car up to actually changing the oil. I spent more today buying all the nesecssary parts to be able to change my oil, but will save money in the future! Thanks again man
Cheers Chris mate.. I'm coming to you all the way from IRELAND. As I've already said in a previous comment I'm completely new to the motoring game. Your videos are very instructive and clear and easy to understand and I want to say thanks a million for all of them. They are a massive help to me personally. I never had an interest in cars or driving them but after buying my first car a couple of months ago I have caught the bug at last. I never understood what drivers meant about the freedom it gives you but now I do and I want to look after this little baby as well as I can without having to spend a small fortune, especially with those easy jobs I can learn to do for myself down the road a ways. Thank you very much man. These videos are awesome for someone like me to be able to check into and see how to do those little jobs that a garage would charge a pile for. You're a star my friend. Take care and happy driving..
Hey man, did my first oil change today and it went really smooth because I watched your video over and over until I knew what I was doing a few weeks prior to that. Thank you!
I know this video is 6 years old but it just helped me change my own engine oil today. Thanks so much Chris! I never thought I would be able to do something like this before! It was great fun!
I’m fairly new to cars and my first repair was a simple tire change which was recent. After that I’ve decided I wanted to change my oil as well to save a few bucks and this tutorial was perfect. Thanks man!!
Being a woman, this is something my friends would never talk about or would know how to do, so knowing how to do things like this really help out me and them if something is wrong with our cars. Also, it saves money and time.
Before unscrewing a drain plug, I like to first open an engine oil cap on top to equalize the pressure. As a result, more oil will come out quicker. Other than that, great video. Thanks!
Just wanted to take a second to say thank you Chris! Your videos have taught me so much and have already saved me quite a bit of money with all of your great tips and tricks. So far I have turned 2 of my friends and my dad onto your channel, and now they know how to do most things with their vehicles at home, as well as me. Again, thank you Chris! Please continue to provide us all with your well detailed videos, they are a tremendous help!
Love your videos, Chris. You keep it simple for all to understand while still helping us to do the job right. Your videos have made me more confident to do my own work using premium parts rather than overpaying garages that use substandard parts.
My dad loves me its just I never asked him how to change the oil plus he doesn't have to much time hes a working man so I'm watching ChrisFix to learn how to fix cars myself.
@@bendover5289 i own one and its nice but everything under the hood is just a huge inconvenience I have to get to the headlights lights from the wheel well...
Engine light came on because I needed an oil change. First time ever doing one, and it felt amazing starting the car after the oil change and the check engine light being gone😎‼️You a real one Chris💯
At minute 14.42, You also want to make sure your old oil filter gasket is not still stuck on the engine, because You don`t want to double gasket. Because double gasketing will cause a Major oil leak! God Bless.
Just finished my first oil change! Thank you so much! Took me a couple of hours of back and forth from the store getting everything I needed but it worked out! I hope to start being more hands on with my car. Just another thing added to my repertoire :)
Kind of silly, but I catch myself rewatching these videoes. Not because I need the informative part, but just because you're so entertaining and chill. Please keep the videos coming.
Hey Chris i recently did my own oil thanks to you . I used pennzoil high mileage pure plus synthetic oil and a k&n oil filter totally different from the cheap stuff they use at jiffy lube . I did struggle because I just bought this car a 2008 Chevy impala Lt and the guys who did the last oil change not only stripped the oil drain bolt but tighten it up so much I cou ldnt get it off. I tried everything ..all I had some tiny vice grip pliers . finally after hour's of using brute force I saw this video again remembering I could use a pipe over the pliers and voila cracked the bolt open and that's all she wrote. My next project is to do the front brakes on a 2001 chevy Malibu, I'll definitely keep you posted.
Buy a set of Irwin Easy Outs. For $25 you get a set specifically designed to get out stripped or broken bolts etc. It is basically a left hand threaded set of sockets with teeth and they really bite into the bolt remains. Good luck.
I originally discovered you when I wanted to clean out my engine bay. I knew nothing about vehicle maintenance but I still wanted to "work" on my car. Two years later, I finally bit the bullet and did my first oil change. Thanks for all the help Chris. Hopefully I'll keep learning from your videos and eventually be doing all my own repairs
I've used your videos to work on my car, thanks to you and your instructions I've been able to do basic maintenance like my own oil, brakes and rotors as well as fluid flushes to much needed repairs like replacing my motor mounts! Thank you!
1:22 this was such a brilliant tip. I did my oil change using the kerb method. There I was scouring internet for cheap ramps. This method saved me money and storage space of ramps if I had purchased them. Thanks for the great tip.
Just changed mine for the first time and this is also the first time a RUclips tutorial has gone perfectly as planned without any unexpected problems. Thanks Chris!
My record for at home oil change is 45 mins (that's setup, safety check, and the job itself) So far I've done 6 at home oil changes across 4 cars and it's a great feeling not only for the cars internals (it runs so much better on fresh fluid) but for yourself having a sense of satisfaction. A sense of "I did that" Personally I use Valvoline and change it every 3,000 (I've used both Synthetic and convention and I don't notice any difference)
Why Valvoline? Simple, it's the Motor Oil that sponsors Hendrick Motorsports in NASCAR (Jimmie Johnson fan BTW) though I am open to trying Pennzoil and Mobil 1
There are data sheets you can use to compare oils if you want, it's good to do! I've found that Pennzoil Platinum, though it says the same 5w30 numbers on the bottle, is actually thinner at startup and operating temperature than Valvoline Full Synthetic 5w30 and so it's better in wintertime than Valvoline for cold starts. One thing with full synthetic is it generally won't burn at lower temperatures like conventional does and it'll leave fewer deposits. Conventional vs Synthetic's more of a difference for a Diesel engine though, the 5w40 just lubricates quicker than 15w40 and doesn't lose its protection at the hotter temperatures.
I have completely no idea what to do when it comes to cars, but I've NEVER been equally as informed and taught as well as you have done. Thank you so much as I will definitely keep watching your vids.
Did my first oil change yesterday, and your video was of great help, although i first watch this video like 2 years ago,.... before i even had a car, but to put it simply, changing my own oil or working in my car is one if the best feelings ever. Thanks chris.
As a 27-year old woman it's a bit embarrassing that I never knew how to do this! This goes on the list of useful things they should teach you in high school. Thanks for such a thorough and simple explanation Chris!
Hey chris, I know this is an old video. But I had a few additional tips to share in the comments. I am a tire technician at a automotives shop but it's a small shop and we have 2 mechanics. They work on the more "difficult" jobs and leave me with the simpler jobs. Oil changes being the most common. When changing the oil, loosen the drain plug for the oil pan, almost all the way, when you feel that the plug is on its last thread, be ready to quickly yank the bolt away, this will reduce splashing. For the filter, we don't pretty fill. But it's a good thing to do. When tightening the filter, tighten untill you feel resistance, then do 3/4 of a turn to snug it up. When checking oil after filling. It's also good to check other fluids. Check transmition fluid while the car is running. If there is not a dipstick for transmition, you have to check it under the car while it is lifted. Finally, after you've checked brake fluid, power steering, and coolant. Check the air filter. They aren't too expensive to replace. (If you cant find a power steering reservoir, your vehicle will probably have electrical assist.) Thx.
Also, removing the oil cap in the engine can help the oil drain a bit faster. Once my oil is not gushing out, on my vehicle, I can just about fit the dripping oil and catch the filter oil in my spent oil container so I drain the pan and filter at the same time. Also, a fumoto valve makes changing oil a breeze.
@@GuardianDown56 That's that a bad idea. In my city most parking garages are monitored 24/7 which is freaking lame. There is a Walmart a couple of miles out it might just do the trick.
Mike Camaro yeah that’s lame for sure, the garage I use isn’t monitored, lots of us work on our vehicles down there haha, but it is a joke trying to work on your vehicles in the city if you don’t own or rent a house with a garage.

So I really thank you for this video. I pray and hope you do well always in all and everything you do. God bless and love from down under here in Australia!
Hey Chris. I also use a large flat piece of cardboard under car when changing motor or diff oils. I somehow always manage to get oilsl/fluids on the ground. The cardboard soaks it right up.
Your videos give me all the confidence I need when I work on my Toyota now! I used to be scared to work on it but now I feel like I can do anything. Thanks Chris!
Interesting fact: Some of the used motor oil can be recycled into gasoline and some is recycled into base stock for new motor oil. This can be accomplished at an oil refinery. 🙂
A tip for tightening bolts with no chance of cross threading is to start screwing it in reverse like you're unscrewing it, then when you hear a click, screw it back in. The click is the threads aligning.
Yes...but it doesn't always click. Like older bolts or if the threads are grimy/dirty. when reversing (or loosening) the bolt you should feel a slight step down, therefore aligning the threads. Just by chance you can't hear or feel anything, you can just back off on the bolt a few turns before tightening it.

I have ordered a Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve which I hope will make future oil changes a lot easier
Second problem was no tool to remove the oil filter , so rather than hammer a screw driver through it to make a handle I decided to drill through it which i thought was a bit safer than hitting it with a hammer, sadly the oil poured out all over the drill and me but I did get it off in the end.

I watched this video about seven times before doing my first oil change.

Hey bud, I’m 15 and I have been working on cars for a while now.

A couple of extra points to add;
1: when placing the oil pan under the oil sump plug bolt make sure you have the oil pan positioned to compensate for the direction of flow of the oil when it comes out of the hole, especially if the bolt is angled slightly.
Oil stains from asphalt can be removed. Hit it with a degreaser from any auto parts store and a brush and it should come out.
For the oil stains try something called Eximo. We use it at the gas station at the grocery store I work at. Cleans hydrocarbon stains great.

Just changed my oil using this as my main guide. Here are some tips from my experience:
10. While you are under the car its a good time to check for rust and any other things you see going bad.
thanks for the tips
Thanks!
tighten up the new oil filter with the wrench, not with your oily bare hand. I usually drain the oil, have my lunch, let them drop for 1/2 hrs.& then refill.

Note to self, don't buy the cheapest jackstands.
Personally, I prefer flipping my car at a high speed so I can easily access the underside of the vehicle without needing to buy a jack or ramps.

Exactly this! Also put some oil around the O ring of your new filter before putting it in

But I would like to be able to sometime down the road, be able to do that, and say much like anybody else that’s told me how easy it is, add that as like, if you were adding more experience or another job to your résumé, just be able to add another thing to a vehicle that I can do that’s relatively easy that even if it took a short while, I can say I did, and whenever I actually have the money to afford buying some of the initial things that help with the set and start up of it, I think that would be cool, and I myself would use the ramps as well.
because of your channel Chris, I now work on my own car, very fun
That’s awesome
What car do you work on?
Ive done half of it today on my daughters Camry. However..Im not strong enough to get the filter off!😔😤😢💄🔧💪💅😔😤 Any suggestions other then the actually tools used here?!?
Wendy Lucas an oil filter wrench will help.
@@wendylucas9628 , you could go to a garage and ask them to loosen it for $10 -$15. Have done it.
Old video but I should add a tip. when you remove the old filter make sure the oil filter gasket is not stuck on the oil filter housing. I've seen it.
Seen that too. Oil spilled right out of the engine when it started
Yes sir that Gasket gets stuck
and if you have a cartridge type filter, make sure to replace the gasket on the cap with the filter. most cartridge filters comes with one of these extra gaskets. thought it'd be worth a mention as some people forget that step
Nice advice
Sear's taught us to wipe oil on the gasket to seal it and it won't stick to the car.
I want to thank you Chris, you encouraged me to change my oil in my VW Golf and save some money. You are a great person. Now I need to change my clockspring, I saw your video about it and I will do it by myself to save a ton of money!!!
That's what I love to hear! Thanks a lot!
Heyyyy!! I have a 1.4 litre mk 1 golf, still using a carburettor! :-)
Thanks!
My tips:
#1 - Buy your oil from Wal-Mart.
It could be cheaper overall in some cases by $10-$15
FRAM air filter should be alright, but oil nope :)

Thanks!
It doesn't matter because engines have crank case breathers.

Leave a like if your Dad never loved you enough to teach you how to change the oil in your car.

My next project is to do the front brakes on a 2001 chevy Malibu, I'll definitely keep you posted.
illwill I always take my car to Jiffy Lube. I didn't know they use cheap stuff. They charged me $35. Next time, I will try to do it myself.
illwill penzoil is what they use at Jiffy Lube
Thank you!
I hate watching tutorial videos but this video was really relaxing and informative. Thanks man!
Glad the video was helpful!
I already know how to change my own oil, your vids are just so entertaining and helpful
Thanks a lot!
I Know Right
1:22 this was such a brilliant tip. I did my oil change using the kerb method. There I was scouring internet for cheap ramps. This method saved me money and storage space of ramps if I had purchased them. Thanks for the great tip.
I'm going to do this too.❤
Just changed mine for the first time and this is also the first time a RUclips tutorial has gone perfectly as planned without any unexpected problems. Thanks Chris!
My record for at home oil change is 45 mins (that's setup, safety check, and the job itself)
So far I've done 6 at home oil changes across 4 cars and it's a great feeling not only for the cars internals (it runs so much better on fresh fluid) but for yourself having a sense of satisfaction. A sense of "I did that"
Personally I use Valvoline and change it every 3,000 (I've used both Synthetic and convention and I don't notice any difference)
3000 miles. thats like 4800 km . its every 5 months driving for me. isnt that to often?
lars vegard vesterhagen Bundli not at all (now if you log 3,000 in 3-4 months you might wanna try synthetic)
automan224 45 MINUTES?!?!? It takes me 9 minutes for a full oil change and change of filter. Wtf do you do for 45 minutes?
I have completely no idea what to do when it comes to cars, but I've NEVER been equally as informed and taught as well as you have done. Thank you so much as I will definitely keep watching your vids.
Glad you are learning a lot!
5 years and he’s still answering comments.
Thank for the help
At last!
Ive been looking for this for about 5 mins already, after i saw he only tightened the filter by hand. Haha
I'm not close with my dad, so content like this really helps me learn how to do this type of stuff on my own. Thank you!
This is a certified hood classic oil change video man did everything so efficiently and fast with lots of info

I appreciate that you mentioned the importance of disposing of the oil properly.
This!!
Never over-tighten your drain bolts again. The ValvoMax Oil Drain Valve is a one-time installation.
joblessalex Nice tip! I've always done this and have never had any problems
