Great tutorial . Thanks . Using Disk Drill can I recover data from an external drive that appears to have been damaged due to a power surge ? At some point there was a burnt smell coming out from the external drive . I also have an older computer that Best Buy had wiped out its internal hard drive without telling me upfront. I have a WD external drive. It was not working at all and did not show up on my PC window 10. I checked cables and determined cables are good. I opened up the case and removed the USB / power supply circuit board. I installed the hard drive into the PC and connected the SATA and power cable. The drive will only show up in the "Disk Management" and it states that he drive needs to be initialized. I down loaded Drill Disk and that drive does not show up in the program. My question is How do I know if there is any data on this drive?
Your WD external drive shows up in Disk Management but requires initialization, which could indicate a corrupted file system. Initializing the drive might erase data. Consider sending your drive to the professional data recovery service.
I was unable to get the disk management to pass the "connecting to virtual Disk Service". I have two new disks in a 3-bay external drive reader, old ones working normal, these new ones make noises and vibration as soon as connected but do not appear in windows 10. is there any alternate suggestion to inicialize them you could share? Thanks.
When I go to Disk Management, it doesn't appear at all in the top window of drives. In the lower panel, It displays as 'Disk 1, Unknown, Not initialised.' The area to the right of this has nothing displayed. I right-click, and select 'Initialize Disk'. I select GPT, which has been auto-selected for me. And then a box appears saying 'Virtual Disk Manager - Incorrect function.' I have no idea what to do now.
The "Virtual Disk Manager - Incorrect function" error usually indicates a connection or hardware issue. First, check the drive's connection, try different ports or cables, and test it on another computer. If the problem persists, use the diskpart command in Command Prompt to clean the disk, then attempt initialization again. Additionally, run a diagnostic tool to check the drive's health, and ensure it's recognized in BIOS/UEFI. If these steps fail, consider using third-party partitioning software or consult a data recovery service.

First, ensure all cables are securely connected and try different ports. Run chkdsk X: /f /r (replace X with the drive letter) in Command Prompt as an administrator to check and fix errors. If the issue persists, use third-party recovery tools like Disk Drill. Also, try connecting the drive to another computer. If these steps fail and the data is critical, consider professional data recovery services.

Try changing the drive letter using Disk Management with administrative privileges. If that doesn't work, use Command Prompt with Diskpart to assign a letter and remove write protection (attributes disk clear readonly). If these steps fail, check for hardware issues. If you still can't access the drive, consider using data recovery software like Disk Drill to retrieve your files.
One issue my drive is not showing up in disk management. The original name of my drive is showing up in the safely remove hardware and media though. Help
Hi there. Having used disk drill on an external hard drive and extracted what I was after I can no longer view the ext hard drive when I plug it back in. Is there anything I can do? Whilst the laptop recognizes the hard drive it only shows up in disk management showing a removable "No Media" and the box to the right is all grey shade. I was hoping that your quick fix here would of helped. Many thanks
Hello, My hard drive seems to be part of time stamp number 3, my question is though: can i still see all the saved data from the drive after doing the simple volume option? Thanks a lot for this informative video btw :)
Yes, performing a quick format on a disk will erase all the information stored on it. A quick format removes the file system structure from the disk, effectively wiping out any existing data. However, it doesn't overwrite the entire disk with zeroes, so it's possible for data recovery tools to retrieve some of the information after a quick format. So try this method if nothing else works.

I've ordered a WD 44 tb hard drive from Amazon which is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to back up to that. I have a 3 Tb drive with [roughly] 1 Tb listed as 'unallocated'. I was given this disk and I do not know what may have been on it before I got it, but because it had an operating system on it I did not want on it, I simply reformatted it, but had never actually checked its contents. Now, however, I find that roughly 1/3 of the drive can not be accessed, and I have no idea what is there, nor what I can do about it. I do not honestly care to recover what MIGHT be there, but mainly, I do not want to lose what I have on the part of the drive I have been writing irrecoverable data to [I stream on youtube, so it is original material of my own creation], while [hopefully] unlocking the rest of the drive for use. My question is, how can I remove this 'unallocated space' designation, WITHOUT destroying the material I already have? Or will I need to obtain another drive, copy my material, and then fully wipe and reformat this disk to get rid of this problem? Since this is a storage drive only, and has no operating system on it, I am not worried about anything other than protecting intellectual property of my on creation. Thank you.
You could try to solve this problem by updating your hard drive's driver. Open your Device Manager, right-click on the unallocated hard drive found under the Disk drive section. From the right-click menu, select Properties > Driver > Update. Here, follow all on-screen instructions and Restart your PC after the update.
Sir I can see that my har drive is connect bcoz can see exit option but can not see hard disc in computer so can not use these method even I possible see my hard disc in t.v. and mobile phone as well
In thiis case, check Device Manager and Disk Management to see if it’s detected, and assign a drive letter if needed. Try a different USB port or cable, as that might be the issue. Ensure any external power supply is connected, and update USB drivers via Device Manager. If none of these work, professional recovery may be necessary.
Try initializing it if it shows as "Not Initialized," and assign a drive letter if it's missing. Create a new volume if the drive appears "Unallocated." Update the drive's drivers via Device Manager, and run a disk check using chkdsk in Command Prompt.
Yes, initializing a hard drive with data that is currently unallocated will erase the partitioning information, but typically not the actual data itself-at least not immediately. However, initializing it may make it harder to recover the data, depending on the method you use.
I can't change the drive letter, because the disk... doesn't show up! And when I try to initialise it, the error message 'Incorrect function' appears. So I'm stuck :(
This can occur if you lack administrative privileges, the drive is in use, or it is a system drive. Additionally, the drive might be in an unreadable state, or there could be restrictions due to group policies or bugs in the Disk Management tool.
Does this method work for an android phone that recovery software on PC can't recognize? I am able to connect my android to my PC, and access/transfer files, but recovery software will not recognize the phone as a drive that can be scanned.
You can use Disk Drill for Mac to attempt to recover data from an Android phone. Disk Drill for Windows does not have this feature yet. Please mind, that Disk Drill can't be installed on a phone, you need to have a Mac computer.
Well, the problem is that the external hard drive doesn't show up on my PC any longer (same as the title of your video), so I can't really use any of these methods.

For Method #4, my mobile drive is not showing up in the upper area of the disk management window, but it shown as an unknown disk at the bottom. What can I do😭
Thanks for commenting! File names and folder structure are metadata that quite often can't be recovered. To increase the recovery chances make sure to run the "All Recovery methods" scan on the whole drive. If you only run Deep Scan, the metadata is lost. Please also see the suggestions in this article: www.cleverfiles.com/help/why-dont-my-recovered-files-have-their-original-names/
external HD's usually have a very specific connector, so you can't use a different cable for it. You can't use a Western Digital Cable on a SeaGate HD or vice versa.
I have not seen this, but I buy drives and separate caddies, not a branded unit. IF they do this, it's to stop you using low quality generic USB leads, which they know will eventually cause power issues.

Additionally, run a diagnostic tool to check the drive's health, and ensure it's recognized in BIOS/UEFI. If these steps fail, consider using third-party partitioning software or consult a data recovery service.

I couldn't see my corrupted external drive in Disk Management, so I am not able to Format. Any help please?

Help! I could not any farther than 'Initialize the drive' - I got the error message: 'Data Error (cyclic redundancy check).
I did it again and followed up to step #3 to the diagnostics... still nothing. What am I missing? The externatl hard drive is: 12tb Avolusion. I will keep trying.
In advance, Thank you!
@@cleverfiles The disk is brand new just open the box yesterday, so nothing is on it.
I am in Disk Management, and it shows Disk 1 being 'Unknown 11176.00 GB Not Initialized'
It recognized the disk being there, but I cannot initialize it (now greyed out) nor go farther.
I will keep researching and follow up with a professional. Thank you for the video and your following up.
UPDATE! It is working and all I see is USB-HDD (D:) Properties. I guess it took some time to work since it was a large disk.
You sir! Are a legend, made my day. Perfect vid 🙏👍.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It shows up on diskpart and disk management. Usb stick immediately shows when plugged in but none of my external drives show up, the hdd's immediately show up on other pc's.
Just had to assign a drive letter to the hdd.
You just saved my day, I have an older external disk that was not showing up on my pc. Since I wasn't finding the original cable I was using more recent cables. I thought I had lost all my family pictures....and watching this video, the part where you mentioned the usb 2.0 cable hit me! I found the original cable and it worked, man I'm so happy 😆I never would of thought of this but the cable is much thicker and it was the solution!!! Thank you so much for this video. 🙏💪
Happy to help! 🙌
worked like a charm, had to initialize the hard drive within the disk management. thank you brother, the new lesson is much appreciated, thank you once again :)
Welcome 👍
Thank you. I had to initialise the drive. Very helpful 😊
Changing the letter did it for me. Thank you so much!!
Glad it helped!
Dude, THANK YOU! Changing the Drive Letter worked for me!
Glad it helped!
Excellent, no nonsense video. Highly recommended. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you. I spent hours going through Microsoft’s answers for this problem, which lead to nothing but more frustration. While watching your video I tried each solution. My pc was fixed in less than 5 minutes. THANK YOU…THANK YOU…THANK YOU.
You're welcome! 🙌

Thank you for your feedback:)
changing the drive letter worked for me, great video!
Glad it helped!
nearly all of these fixes depend on being able to see the drive to click on it - I acn't see it - it sodesnt register as being connected at all
Please contact us at help@cleverfiles.com for further assistance.
None of this worked 😢 i tried everything. Pluging it to a diffrent computer, changing the cable, all the commands, i just dont know what to do atp. I isn't a new disc. I had it for a year and it did not have any issues. Yesterday it randomly disapeared
Thanks man method #2 helped me out a lot!
Glad to hear it!
Hi, it wont even let me change drive letter and paths... Help!

Many thanks

Hello,
My hard drive seems to be part of time stamp number 3, my question is though: can i still see all the saved data from the drive after doing the simple volume option?
Thanks a lot for this informative video btw :)
If you are referring to running a troubleshooter, yes, it should keep all your data intact.
I noticed you left (Perform a quick format) checked, wont this erase all the information on the disc?
Yes, performing a quick format on a disk will erase all the information stored on it. A quick format removes the file system structure from the disk, effectively wiping out any existing data. However, it doesn't overwrite the entire disk with zeroes, so it's possible for data recovery tools to retrieve some of the information after a quick format. So try this method if nothing else works.
@@cleverfiles My hard drive 20 tb WD duel drives 10 tb each which I cant access does show up on another app that you showed me in another video Disk Drill, but I don't have a hard drive big enough to back up to. I've ordered a WD 44 tb hard drive from Amazon which is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to back up to that. I don't think anything is wrong with the HD's, I think I have a power cycling problem. Oh, by the way I had to go on Amazon and order a Hard Drive Reader IDE SATA to USB 3.0 Adapter to access the drives.
Looks like it's going to take about 214 hrs to back up one of these drives and then there's the other one, geeeee.
thank you so much. i plugged it in and i didn't see it show up, i followed your steps to disk management and got to format it from there
Glad we could help!
How can you do most of this if the drive does not show up anywhere?
Thank you so much brother, this was the only video that actually helped.
Glad it helped :)
Perfect Tutorial, Helped me with my problem straight away. Thanks

Thank you! Had no idea I could find and initialize unrecognized drives under disk management (didn't realize to scroll down to find it; or to right click it for options). You just saved my four drives I was about to recycle!
Glad I could help!

I keep getting a pop-up that says "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error" . what does that mean ?
In this case it's important to check if the hard drive is initialized. An uninitialized hard drive can sometimes cause this error.
dude is a lifesaver
It's not showing anything when I opened disk management

Will following any of these steps erase any potential data on the hard drive?
No, your data should be safe.
Very Helpful!
Mines not showing up on my disk management do u know how to fix that it’s on my laptop
Try initializing it if it shows as "Not Initialized," and assign a drive letter if it's missing. Create a new volume if the drive appears "Unallocated." Update the drive's drivers via Device Manager, and run a disk check using chkdsk in Command Prompt.
But bro, mine still doesn't show up, even in device manager.

Thank you. Method 2 and 4 solved my problem. Cheers!
You're welcome!
Method 4 worked. You are an angel! Big thanks!
Happy to help 😊
100% Perfect Feedback - Straight to the point. Thank you for this matey.
You're welcome ✌️
If I initialize my unallocated hdd w data will it erase the data
Yes, initializing a hard drive with data that is currently unallocated will erase the partitioning information, but typically not the actual data itself-at least not immediately. However, initializing it may make it harder to recover the data, depending on the method you use.
Legend! Cheers, mate.
Hope it gets your drive working. Cheers!
I can't change the drive letter, because the disk... doesn't show up!
And when I try to initialise it, the error message 'Incorrect function' appears. So I'm stuck :(
Please contact us at help@cleverfiles.com for further assistance.
Why are options such as "Change Drive Letter" greyed out?
Life saver, thank you!
Well, the problem is that the external hard drive doesn't show up on my PC any longer (same as the title of your video), so I can't really use any of these methods.
Really helpful cheers mate 👍
Thank you, Method number 4 worked
My ext SSD shows on a win 7 and a win 8 machine, but not my win 10 machine
It does not show in disc management,so it cannot be initialized
All my other NON ssd ext drives show in win 10
Is there a fix for that?
Cheers
Make sure that you have the latest drivers installed for your SSD. You can check the manufacturer's website for the most up-to-date drivers and compatibility with Windows 10.

does Disk Drill recover the original file names?
Thanks for commenting!
File names and folder structure are metadata that quite often can't be recovered.
To increase the recovery chances make sure to run the "All Recovery methods" scan on the whole drive. If you only run Deep Scan, the metadata is lost.
Please also see the suggestions in this article: www.cleverfiles.com/help/why-dont-my-recovered-files-have-their-original-names/
Worked thank you.
external HD's usually have a very specific connector, so you can't use a different cable for it. You can't use a Western Digital Cable on a SeaGate HD or vice versa.
I have not seen this, but I buy drives and separate caddies, not a branded unit. IF they do this, it's to stop you using low quality generic USB leads, which they know will eventually cause power issues.
What if the drive is not showing up in mac, not showing up in disk drill
