My external hard drive works well when I use it in USB 2 but don't work in USB 3. My computer has only USB 3. I bought a USB hub with both USB 2 & 3 and use the external hard drive in USB 2 of that hub. It works fine.

This is simular to my prob but not quite. My comupter sees my WD 40ezaz when hooked to my Cinolink adapter but not in anyother setup. Any ideas My Computer is seeing the hook ups in devices but not the hard drive when in them. Also does that in Disk Man!

My problem started, after I scanned the ext.HD, which windows reccomended, because there was a supposed problem. After scanning it said everything is okay, but then it didn't read the HD anymore. I tried out, the things from this video, but it still doesn't help. Any advise?
I have a Mac Mini 2014 and installed the latest Monterey OS....I used a wired key board as recommended......I installed bootcamp and then used my Logitech wired keyboard to use both systems....unbeknown to me my logitech wireless mouse and keyboard prevented me from seeing external drives on Monterey OS.....when I removed the wireless keyboard and attached a generic wired keyboard I could see all the external drives attached to Mac OS.....this drove me nuts

This video is spot on. At first I even thought I still couldn't figure it out, but I'll BE! Watching this video made it possible. Very well done. My Element WD was showing up as disc 1. I had reformatted it to hold PS4 data, but needed to use it for Windows. Another video said Disk 0 and Disk 1 were usually your PC's C drive and other important stuff so I just had it in my head that I couldn't touch those. Turns out Disk 1 was it and all I had to do was delete the volume on it. Which I am guessing was all the PS4 stuff.

You mean the light was not on when plugging it in? Then probably the drive is damaged. But first you can try the methods in the video to help detect the drive.

I have an external WD 14TB Elements drive and plenty of experience installing new drives. I kept getting errors of "fatal" device error. Couldn't initialize or format. I would shut off and turn back on... nothing. Then I unplugged the drive from the AC input and plugged it back in, and my PC finally recognized it. As for why it didn't the first time, I have absolutley no idea; but I spent 45 minutes thinking it was probably DOA until 45 seconds ago. This is after trying all my computers USB ports, etc.

The WD Elements external drive has all my files saved from my MAC. After following the steps n this video, it does now recognize the drive in my PC but it's like a different folder. I cannot access the files that are saved from my MAC on PC. What can I do to fix this? Thank you

Boy, things sure work quicker and with MANY fewer clicks than a person actually doing the tasks needs to do. I tried giving a USB thumb drive a permanent drive letter and, while successful, wanted to remove the permanent drive letter so the computer would again assign the drive letter if the drive was plugged into a USB port. I was able to "remove" the drive but, it didn't just remove the permanent drive letter. The computer no longer recognizes that the drive is connected (even though I do get a USB is connected tones when I plug the drive in. It just doesn't show up anywhere. Question: Is there a way to restore the permanent drive letter again or (what I was wanting to do by what I hoped would remove just the permanent drive letter which ended up apparently removing the drive which I can no longer find). Is there a way to get back to either a permanent drive letter or (better) with no permanent drive letter without having to reformat the drive? Added after doing more mucking around: I was able to get back to assigning the drive a permanent drive letter again (after positively identifying the drive via the cmd prompt) but, would still like to know how to remove a permanent drive letter and go back to letting the computer assign it on the fly. I don't do administrative functions all that often so have to fight through them every time.

Hi, first give permission to your external hard drive. 1) Go to This PC and right-click the inaccessible external hard drive, select Properties and go to the Security tab. 2) Click on Edit and choose your username from the Group or username section. 3) Click Add and OK to finish. I just got mine recently and it was working fine and I took a nap while it was plugged in and I woke up and my laptop went into rest mode so I turned it back on and it was gone. Now it’s saying like there is a hardware error when I try to initialize it. Smh
im not sure if im doing anything wrong but i would appreciate any help if it can be offered. i found some old HDD's that were in some old computers my family had. my dads was still running windows XP because like a stubborn ox he refused to update his hardware. my mothers was eventually upped to windows seven and i think in the last months before she stopped using it updated to windows 8 but never 10. so anyways i have both HDD's which are the 3.5 disk drives that require 12v to function. the newer one (its about 10 years old) is a sata connection and does power on and stay on, but its not showing up in the disk management, and on the device management its also not showing up either. so if i may ask, is there anything im doing wrong? on the second one its slightly older and has the old master/slave/system board cable that computers no longer use. i have an adapter to fit that, but it also doesnt seem to power on though it could be because the adapter doesnt allow for power to flow into the HDD. i wish i knew more but i honestly dont. all im wanting is to get the files off and save them because my family doesnt appreciate the necessity of keeping memories and saving them for later and im the only one trying to fix this. for the newer HDD i can plug it into my computer i believe because i do have space available for it in my desktop, imm just worried my computer is going to try and stop functioning because of it. again any help is greatly appreciated.
didnt want to do an edit, so here is update 1 of hopefully only 1. i switched USB Ports to the ones behind my desktop thinking maybe they would be better, and i was right. my computer now recognizes the newer HDD but its having a very hard time with it. not sure what all is going on but now i need to try the second more older one but im pretty sure its not going to work seeing as how theres still the issue with no power but hey one step at a time right?
Curious. What if my USB ports (3.0 in particular) still works for other devices? In my case, the USB jack for my external HDD is only detected when I plug it into my USB 2.0 port with the notification "There's a problem with the drive. Scan to fix it." Yet the scan isn't able to fix anything. The only time I can see it in Disk Management or Device Manager now is when it's connected to the 2.0 port and there's no exclamation point or any detected issues. I was able to get it to detect in my 3.0 port for ONE day if I uninstalled it in Device Manager (while it was in the 2.0 port), ejected it, then plugged it in to the 3.0 port.
Okay, definitely I can't solve this by formatting. Not only because I'll lost data from a decade, but also Disk Management won't show the disk. Like, my PC recognizes the disk for seconds, and then it ignores it. I'm not sure what's going on.

Did you try to assign a new drive letter or troubleshoot driver issues? In this way your data will stay safe.

First time it's showing. Once I disconnect and connect it's not showing.
The blue led of ext hard drive is not coming on and drive is not detected as well.

i found some old HDD's that were in some old computers my family had. my dads was still running windows XP because like a stubborn ox he refused to update his hardware. my mothers was eventually upped to windows seven and i think in the last months before she stopped using it updated to windows 8 but never 10. so anyways i have both HDD's which are the 3.5 disk drives that require 12v to function. the newer one (its about 10 years old) is a sata connection and does power on and stay on, but its not showing up in the disk management, and on the device management its also not showing up either. so if i may ask, is there anything im doing wrong? on the second one its slightly older and has the old master/slave/system board cable that computers no longer use. i have an adapter to fit that, but it also doesnt seem to power on though it could be because the adapter doesnt allow for power to flow into the HDD. i wish i knew more but i honestly dont. all im wanting is to get the files off and save them because my family doesnt appreciate the necessity of keeping memories and saving them for later and im the only one trying to fix this. for the newer HDD i can plug it into my computer i believe because i do have space available for it in my desktop, imm just worried my computer is going to try and stop functioning because of it. again any help is greatly appreciated.
didnt want to do an edit, so here is update 1 of hopefully only 1. i switched USB Ports to the ones behind my desktop thinking maybe they would be better, and i was right. my computer now recognizes the newer HDD but its having a very hard time with it. not sure what all is going on but now i need to try the second more older one but im pretty sure its not going to work seeing as how theres still the issue with no power but hey one step at a time right?

Curious. What if my USB ports (3.0 in particular) still works for other devices? In my case, the USB jack for my external HDD is only detected when I plug it into my USB 2.0 port with the notification "There's a problem with the drive. Scan to fix it." Yet the scan isn't able to fix anything. The only time I can see it in Disk Management or Device Manager now is when it's connected to the 2.0 port and there's no exclamation point or any detected issues.
I was able to get it to detect in my 3.0 port for ONE day if I uninstalled it in Device Manager (while it was in the 2.0 port), ejected it, then plugged it in to the 3.0 port.
OH MY GOD, YOU SAVE ME THANK YOU I have been trying to get it's to work so I can play some games that take up lots of storage.
Okay, definitely I can't solve this by formatting. Not only because I'll lost data from a decade, but also Disk Management won't show the disk. Like, my PC recognizes the disk for seconds, and then it ignores it. I'm not sure what's going on.
