No bullshit. I've seen this vid three times over months and had two favorites with a somewhat shifting middle ground. JCM always sits near the top because it's so clear. Mark and 6505 go back and forth. I know the Mark is basically extinct, hard as hell to dial in but super-sounding when it is. It's honestly not nice to put them in shootouts with extant amplifiers!
The JCM 800 is the perfect metal and rock amp. It's so smooth, and though it's high gain, you can always hear the "pitch" and not just the scratchy overtones like on the other amps.
I enjoyed that ENGL so much. Many people complain about the Powerball being impossible to fit in a mix but you proved the exact opposite. I belive it really works best with mid heavy speakers like the v30 you used here, but I would like to hear your take on this since you own it as well as many other amps. Thank you for your time, great video!
You´re right, every amp react well with a different speakers, engl amps works very well for example with the engl v30 cabinet, but in this example I'm using the same Mesa v30 4x12 cabinet as comparison example.
Same. I can see why people love the Marshall but the dual rec just always sounds so nasty to me. I love that brutal harshness to it, suits metal perfectly.
For these riffs, 5150, Dual Rec, and ENGL. I love me a JCM 800, but for this style, it seems a little dull. Some people get different results though. For a sharp sound, I'd pop in some Shuguang Beijing, Square Foil Getters. They are the same preamp tubes that came in the OG 5150, and they make a big diff in those 2 amps. (they don't really make a difference Ina stealth though.. So it depends on the amp)
Great shootout! I loved ALL the amps and think anyone is lucky to have ANY of them. 8) I have the 6505+, a 1978 JMP 2204, and a Peavey Rockmaster preamp I modded for more modern gain, and the gain is tight AF and great for downtuned guitars. I'm about to get a Pepers Dirty Tree or Fortin 33 pedal to try boosting the Marshall and 6505+ with and can't wait. Anyway, thanks for the great demo, and I really like the rhythms you put together. 8)
5150, Rectifier and JCM800 shine, least sounding too me was Mark 5. I love both brands and got them. My goto is the old Studeo Preamp, noisy but wonderful.
I appreciate the time and effort put into this, but I wish this kind of videos wasn’t always done with such low tunings. Just sounds like chug chug to me and doesn’t really show what the amps sound like.
For recording modern metal the Recto & any sort of 5150 or 6505 are stellar in my opinion. For Rock and 80‘s metal the JCM 800 is the amp. But all others also sound very good and have their place. Finally the cab, the speaker or the IR are the most important part in the chain, determining the core sound. It depends on the song and which sound is in the producers/guitarists head.
Powerball was the best of the 5150 style amps and was the best of all the amps for this style of metal. Rectifier was a close second, but I could see someone really digging how surgical the Mark sounds. JCM 800 was worst for this style of metal, but I seem to be in the minority about that.
That's right but from the start (at least for me) they sound slightly different but this models that I tested have modifications: tubes , bias and different eq...
I'm not a fanboy of any, I just like whatever I hear. For riff 1 and 2 I like the most metallic sounding one that is the 5150. The powerball is a close second for me and actually sounds surprisingly similar in the mix. For riff 3 I actually prefer the Dual Rectifier, it sounds a bit warmer and fuller. The metallic brutality of some others sound a bit out of place in this little music progression.
@@iskoy7861 It's a great amp but I'm personally not a big fan of Diezel amps I had it one in the past and I always ended using Engl, Peavey, Orange, Marshall or Mesa. Maybe it's because it's so clean, almost digital, perfect sound to touch but for mix never works for me.
@@cotardstudios thanks mate, I mean no offence here, the vídeo is very cool, just imaginé those amps against original recordings of osdm, that would be killer
It's kinda me being a fanboy or else, but EVH 5150 and Marshall JCM800 were the ones who sounded absolutly killers for me. A way to go. Specially if you use both in the mix, the riff would sound absolutly full. Marshall have good clarity in low ends and leads, meanwhile the 5150 have a good range of mids
They are all so similar here that there's no reason to pick one over any other on the sound alone lol... It is either IR that makes them all identical or you have dialled them in real close. I don't know... They are barely distinguishable. Maybe if stacked next to each other in fast 4sec or so succession I would be able to tell a bigger difference.
Riff 1: Engl Riff 2: Mark IV Riff 3: 6505/5150 Dual Rec? Fizzy pile of mid scooped shit JCM? Awesome amp, but feels out of place in a modern metal context I'm a big fan of Peavey amps, and I knew they would crush the Dual Rectifier here, but that Engl is awesome. I was about to write off engls cause of the fireball, but the powerball and savage are pretty great. I don't like Mesa but that Mark IV was nice and now I see why Lamb of God used them.
Savage it's one of my favourite amps, but i didn't have one to test it, I like fireball and powerball to play "leads tones" usually I don't like as a personal taste to mix rhythm tones. Exactly, Lamb of god knows what they are doing, the Mesa Mark's are a gorgeous amps, It's great and fun to play with it.
Sounds like shit on all 6 of them, but the JCM800 was definitely the worst of the bunch. Tubby and flubby as fuck. Awful. The Mark IV was too low in the mix, it was fighting with the drums way too much, and the other amps definitely need boost pedals to tighten them up. I'd say the 6505 sounded best to me in this video, but I'm a diehard Mark IV fan.
JCM is amazing. It's just not the best for this type of modern metal. Rectifiers sound like woofy dogshit. The Mark is incredible though. Over I think the Peaveys take it here. It's hard to beat that punchy midrange.
@Sean Jeffrey A man after my own heart lol. I do understand the appeal of the rectos, quite brutal sounding, but I love the mids of a JCM 800. Just very pleasing to my ear for whatever reason.

I love it how opinions are all over the place. I own a couple rectifiers myself but damn, that JCM 800 is so good.

JCM is definitely a sledgehammer
The JCM 800 is the perfect metal and rock amp. It's so smooth, and though it's high gain, you can always hear the "pitch" and not just the scratchy overtones like on the other amps.
It's a great amp!
It feels like almost as if has much more low-end as well.

My vote goes for 5150 followed by JCM800
The dual rec is my favorite in the full band mix sections.
Same. I can see why people love the Marshall but the dual rec just always sounds so nasty to me. I love that brutal harshness to it, suits metal perfectly.
As I guy who never had any of them, I'd say I like them all, with all their specialities/differences.
The way you play, you make all the amps sound great. My favorite is the ENGL Powerball 👍🏻
They all sound fine, I don't think it matter which one you use
I'm not a metal guy, but the best sounding for me is the Peavey 6505
For these riffs, 5150, Dual Rec, and ENGL. I love me a JCM 800, but for this style, it seems a little dull. Some people get different results though. Why is everyone so obsessed with the *KYYUUUP* sound effect?
(Riff 2)
Harmonic rakes? It's a technique in metal that sounds good, like pinch harmonics and pick slides

Very cool video!
Great video!
In my opinion: 1.- JCM800, 2.- MARK IV, 3.- PEAVEY 6505, 4.- ENGL, 5.- 5150, 6.- DUAL RECTIFIER
Sounds great !
Amazing tones with 5150 and Mark IV. What's the tubes (power/pre) on the 5150?
12AX7 and EL34 ¡Thanks!
@@cotardstudios EL34 on 5150? Sure? Actually, i would like to know what's the brand/models of the tubes used for u.
@@cotardstudios Did you do the same mod for the 6505? It sounded a tiny bit different..

I have a mark iv but that 6505 sounds the best for this riff.
Hell yeah man, that's sweet!
Those Peavey's own it. Second riff that Marshall came alive.
I feel the mesa sits best in the mix here. Marshall is nice too.
They all sound awesome. I'm surprised at how much of a difference there was between the 5150 and 6505.
I know huh, I thought they were the same amp. Maybe it's recorded on different settings...
Thanks, different settings and bulbs in this case, are almost the same amp but the 5150 sounds more aggressive to me.
6505, 5150 and Dual Rectifier.

Que distorcion le metiste al jcm800?

Dual rec sounds the most brutal to me. 800 best overall tone to me
I really like the 800
I prefer the 5150 out of the bunch. Mix it with the Rectifier, and it’s the perfect tone for that kind of music.
i personally would like dual rec on my left, and JCM800 on my left

It's a soft-core metal progression. I don't like metal, but when in Rome,..
Which is tighter mesa mark iv or peavey 5150?
I think the Mark IV has less low-mids naturally, and might have the tightest low end of the bunch.
I think the Mark IV has more definition but the 5150 it's one of the most brutal amp in the market.
@@cotardstudios bro the diezel vh4 is it tighter than the mark iv and 5150?
