I read the Red Shoes in an anthology once as a kid and proceeded to skip over the story every time I picked up the book for exactly this reason. It's such an awful fate.
Yes! And the new ones already feel dated and pandering with the overuse of iPhones and pop music. There’s barely any escapism either. Unless you count Barbies family being rich lol
YES! Like the older movies feel...timeless. Doesn't matter whether you watching them in 2007 or 2024, it feels like you're WITH the characters as they're living in medieval castles, wearing (concept) designed with care and detailed dresses and going on adventures with them. Princess Charm School is a decent blend of the past and present, since whatever's modern and post 2010s is not overused to death, but it's also the last of the good ones. Sure there's a decent/passable movie/sequel here and there, but dude, that magic is gone. Life in a Dreamhouse is kooky energy and I LIVE FOR IT (same for the recent Mickey Mouse Shorts, the CHAOS ✨️), but the vlog version where Barbie has a perfect life with a perfect family and friend group and the occasional Karen neighbour problem, are we seriously suppose to relate to that and suddenly find Barbie down to earth and "one of us"? Nah, screw relatability for Barbie's case, let the girl be proud to be have an closet room full of sparkes and frills and have her extra as heck dreamhouse with zero shame 😂
@@jessoliveiro8975 yes! Like she’s never gonna be relatable. She’s super rich, with a ton of jobs, and even if we just count the newer stuff, she goes to a super fancy school, she gets a ton of unrealistic opportunities, and she can afford both the time and money to travel often. If anything, placing her in the modern times makes her LESS relatable because we have a standard to compare her to. Like how do we know we wouldn’t do the same if we were a princess in a fantasy world, but this is now our world so we know how things should work.
@@skitterly Let's be honest, who in their right mind thought Barbie herself could be relatable and slap her into our current era? Maybe to one sort of group, but to the majority, it's laughable that it's basically coming off as a try-hard "I'm just like you but not really" attempt. Plus, isn't Barbie from the vlogs coming off as Mattel's version of Mickey (not counting Disney 100 and the shorts) as a whole - resourceful and nice, a good role model, but with ZERO personality? And having a BUNCH of opportunities just fall into their lap? A complete snooze-fest compared to what you said, thinking "well if I were in a fantasy kingdom and in the princess mc's shoes, what will I do?" And timelessness vs outdatedness issue aside, the depth of the problems and solutions from the older films and the recent material has gotten so weak. We went from defeating villians (who WILL end the mc, zero hesitation) with delivering insane and well-earned punishments, while there's a clear personality evolution of the mc from Act 1 to Act 3, to "ah well we gotta deal with this Karen character because she ruined our fun!" and the mc is just...stagnant throughout the story. They barely pick up on anything, they stay the same solely because "she's right and the baddie's wrong, why should she change?" The well's utterly dry in Barbieland and it shows.
I actually think it's perfect that Rowena has to dance forever. Firstly, Genevieve used her fan, so she basically beat Rowena with her own weapons (since Rowena wanted them to learn how to use a fan) and secondly, Rowena hates dancing and forbid the princesses to do it.

The thing I love about old Barbie movies is that, while the shortcuts (such as recolouring character models) are noticeable as an adult, my eyes have also been opened to the passion that was put into these projects. They used beautiful mo-cap for the dancing and weren't afraid to give some of the villains MORBID fates. I didn't own the rainbow Fairytopia movie, but I heard that someone straight-up disintegrates. You seriously need to watch fairytopia and mermaidia (fairytopia sequel). Theyre iconic and I cannot wait to see what you think of Bibble, especially in Mermaidia.
I really hope you do Princess and the Pauper someday! it's my favorite of the old barbie movies (Princess and the Popstar actually uses a song from it!)
I grew up loving Barbie movies, so I was interested to watch these videos and see what you have to say (but also the nostalgia, because it has been YEARS since I've watched a Barbie movie--and you're so right, the classics are the best!). Then I kept binging the whole playlist all day because the commentary was so funny. I can't wait to see what you watch next. I suggest one of the Fairytopia movies (there are 3 iirc, so watch the first one first, but the second was my favourite), Barbie Mariposa, Barbie in the Nutcracker, Barbie as the Island Princess, or Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (which is SOOOO much better than whatever that Princess in the Popstar crap was). As for the modern-ish ones ("better" graphics but still not necessarily new), Barbie: Princess Charm School and Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2 are also pretty decent.
This was probably my #1 Barbie movie growing up, I absolutely loved it!! I’m glad you reacted to it! You should definitely react to Barbie as the Island Princess next!!
This is my most FAVORITE Barbie movie. The story itself is based on the 12 Dancing Princesses (aka the Worn Out Dancing Slippers) from the Brothers Grimm! It's a German story about princesses wearing out their dancing shoes each night and the king setting up a contest, any man who discovers where they go gets to marry one of his daughters. Many tried, many failed (they were only given 3 days to figure it out). A soldier returning from war--who helped an old woman on the way, in return she warned him of drugged wine to make him sleep and gave him an invisibility cloak--ended up figuring out that they were going to a magical world and dancing with 12 princes every night (in some versions they were forced to dance with the princes or cursed to). In the story's version he marries the oldest daughter (so not Genevieve lol) I've read some really good retllings of this story!!
Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses is an absolut banger of a movie, the music, animation, relationships and story are all amazing, the villains are chef kiss and the sidekicks are to die for (the monkey may be evil but my heart belongs to him) Does it make sense ? No, Are there plotholes ? More than I can count, Will I watch this everytime I get the chance ? Absolutely
I would love it and I’m sure many others would love a reaction to the most famous barbie movie of Barbie Princess and the Pauper! I’m sure that I alongside others would love to see a certain song “To be a Princess” was rewrote as a terrible rip off in the terrible barbie Princess and the Popstar.
11:37 that was cruel
Mission accomplished

Ok well now I see that, that is the most disturbing spell she could have cast tbh now

You forgot " Magic of the rainbow "
I really hope you do Princess and the Pauper someday! it's my favorite of the old barbie movies (Princess and the Popstar actually uses a song from it!)
4:03 * laughs in black british *
Just you wait till you get to island princess sir...
Oh no 😬
@@Welchy it's not bad lmao just very interesting that a monarch having a monkey is a reoccurring thing
The music for this is so nostalgic for me, it's beautiful 😍
This is my favorite Barbie movie, alongside Barbie Mariposa (which i highly recommend)
No but you absolutely need to watch Barbie in the Pink Shoes purely for the comedic relief it will bring
THIS IS MY FAVORITE ONE OMG THE GAME THAT CAME WITH IT WAS MY LIFE!
I love that you reacted to my whole childhood, I'm just on a binge rn
This was probably my #1 Barbie movie growing up, I absolutely loved it!! I’m glad you reacted to it! You should definitely react to Barbie as the Island Princess next!!
This is a banger of a Barbie movie. The music is amazing!!
As always, your reaction is the best *chef kiss*
And You're the best! 😊
you have to watch the princess and the pauper, youre gonna find the best villain yet
In the story's version he marries the oldest daughter (so not Genevieve lol)
I've read some really good retllings of this story!!
I feel like you would like Barbie the island princess, well minus tika
I hate that elephant 😡😤 she’s so annoying (it’s only below my hatred for shiver) 🤣
@@heathern8043 😂😂😂
Tika infuriates me so much🤣🤣🤣🤣
NOBODY likes that damn elephant
I had a Barbie And The Island Princess head toy
YEAHH WELCHY POST!!!! GET YOUR POPCORN GUYS!!!!
😝😝
Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses is an absolut banger of a movie, the music, animation, relationships and story are all amazing, the villains are chef kiss and the sidekicks are to die for (the monkey may be evil but my heart belongs to him) Does it make sense ? No, Are there plotholes ? More than I can count, Will I watch this everytime I get the chance ? Absolutely
Why does this man’s laugh make me smile?!
YESSS. MORE BARBIE MOVIES!! I love your Barbie content so much!!
am i losing it or does this man have heterochromia? the only person i’ve seen with it is my mum!
He does
I would love it and I’m sure many others would love a reaction to the most famous barbie movie of Barbie Princess and the Pauper! I’m sure that I alongside others would love to see a certain song “To be a Princess” was rewrote as a terrible rip off in the terrible barbie Princess and the Popstar.
Absolutely no chill with these kids I can’t 🤣🤣🤣
They’re evil man
