- Toad is often portrayed as a pretty weak and kinda USELESS character, but he definitely has his moments throughout the series where he proves himself.
Today, we’re looking at Toad’s character in every mainline mario game and ranking him from worthless to elite.
With all the claims of how useless Toads are as guards, I wasn’t expecting so many Elite tiers.
Yeah, as guards they’re bad, but they’re pretty helpful in getting peach back usually 🤷♂️

0:21 The toads that got turned into item blocks give you items, before Peach turns them back to normal. Besides the Toads don’t taunt you. They thank you for saving them before telling you that the princess you’re looking for isn’t around.

the taunting part is most likely a reference to the AVGN with the sprite seemingly having a "flipping off" gesture on each hand

The blue Toad is named Buckenberry and the yellow Toad is named Alagold.

Actually you can see toads running around in NSMB when the lighting cloud strikes the castle in the beginning cutscene
They also appear in a few of the minigames

Actually, the Toads *are* in NSMB DS but only in the cutscene where peach is stolen. They’re represented as clumps of pixels in the background running around frantically.
No! These are actually army of Toadsworths
Those Toads technically use the Toadsworth model since they’re too small to actually see and there is no regular Toad model in the game. I think they still count though since they’re obviously meant to represent normal Toads.
Toads also appear in various minigames, like the slingshot ones where they run back and forth, and the gambling ones where a waiter Toad is serving drinks.

Actually Red Toad in NSMBWii should be “Barely Does Anything” Because after completing Level Holding Red Toad Red Toad can give the 3 up when he big or gives 1 up when he small
saving toad (not the blue or yellow) is the part that i definitely hate about nsmbwii

counting captain toad alone in super mario galaxy isnt really fair to the rest of the whole toad brigade that not only helped and joined with captain toad, but each of them continuing to help in later games like galaxy 2 and odyssey and treasure tracker. the whole toad brigade contribute and later on in galaxy its revealed they got promoted for contributing to rescuing peach

You forgot the point that in Super Mario Odyssey, Toadette can literally give you a quite big portion of the games power moons for completing achievements. 🤔

Blue Toad will always and forever be my favorite character, truly the goat
I know that Toad isn't always the most helpful sidekick to Mario and Luigi, but his heart is in the right place and he's a great lover to Toadette. Also he was a really big help in The Super Mario Brothers Movie!🍄
its scary how much of a deadeye with green shells toad is, i remember playing mario kart tour and toad was in front of me holding a green shell and peach was also in front of me and toad and she tried to throw a banana peel at toad and it hit him and wiped him out and when he recovered he instantly threw his green shell and it slapped peach almost instantly after that.

Where do you rank the toads in Super Smash Bros Melee and the rest of the Smash Bros games? They're a useful shield for Peach, but they only pop up for a second and reflect projectiles by vomitting (I think it's vomit). It's a good shield, but only Peach and Kirby can use it.

How useless is Neocortex in all the crash games? He's almost worthless in Tag Team Racing, i'd argue his weapon is second worst, if not worst, and he's just incompetent as far as the story goes.

The first game, the toads you find in the castles are prisoners. Just because they're a prisoner doesn't mean they know where Peach is. Not to mention without Toads you wouldn't have item blocks. And the prisoners are just telling you that the Princess isn't there. Rather than, y'know, you having to search the castle top to bottom for her before finding out she isn't there. I wouldn't say they're worthless. They're definitely more useful in other games, but not useless. If you disagree... try doing a playthrough of SMB without using any power-ups and get back to me. Second game, same as the first, without Toad you wouldn't have items and would have to waste time searching the castle dungeons for a princess that isn't there.
Super Mario Bros 2, yeah, elite. He's just as capable as Mario, Luigi, and Peach, being able to take on and beat every stage.
Mario 3, yeah, pretty helpful sounds about right. Yes, he does make you play games or only give you one of three items... but he also has the warp whistles, and he does at least GIVE you items and chances at the games without charging you anything.
I was going to argue 'Elite' for Super Mario 64 because they have power stars, but then again, they only have a few between all the Toads in the castle. They are at least very helpful, especially for first time players, with their hints and whatnot.

Ah yes, two Toad guards can definitely take on Bowser's battleship if they put their mind to it, clearly. You'd be cowering if Bowser rocked up to the castle in an airship too, buddy. Also, why does Captain Toad go in elite for Galaxy when he is mostly a bumbling idiot who needs to get rescued quite often, or simply stays behind with the ship while his crew does the more dangerous stuff? Although, more nit-picking... but crystals aren't ice.
...So let me get this straight. Red Toad in NSMB Wii runs mushroom houses were he gives you items for free... but because of a completely optional side mission, you're saying he's useless. Ok.

I'd say the New Super Mario Bros 2 ones are at least borderline elite, since they straight up let you pick your power-up, as opposed to SMB3 where you have to pick a random one out of three or play matching games or roulette games.

I'd argue Toad isn't quite as useful as Mario in Super 3D World because of his low jump... but he is playable. Being more useful than Mario, though? No. Strength isn't an issue in 3D World, so all Toad has is speed and a low jump. In a game where jumping is a pretty big thing. As for painting Captain Toad as even more capable... he can't even JUMP. I fail to see how that makes him seem 'more capable'. And also needs you to rescue him which you've docked Toads points for in the past. It's not the most useful Toad has been, since if you count Captain Toad being unable to do anything but walk... it'd be a pretty low 'elite' at most in my book.#
