- Yoshi's been a more than reliable sidekick for the mario brothers for decades, but there's still plenty of times that he just sat around and did nothing,.
Today, we're looking at Yoshi's character in every mainline Mario game and ranking him from worthless to elite.

His debut wasn't in Yoshi. Yoshi is a spin-off puzzle game that came later. His debut is in Super Mario World.

6:41 Yoshi is actually considered to be the 14th best character out of 82 total in Smash Ultimate according to the official tier list, so he should go into elite tier for that game. Also the best Yoshi main in the world Yoshidora was ranked top 10 in the world at the end of 2023.

Finally Yoshi’s appearance in 64 DS gets some appreciation! Coolest tutorial character ever imo
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - ELITE. He helps you move around faster and has a great Defense-piercing move.
Plus that Yoshi herd move can be quite OP.
And his other moves scale very strongly with Power stat boosts.
In SM64DS if you turn a Koopa into an egg, and then fire it at a line of goombas, each goomba give you a blue coin.
Should have included Thousand Year Door, he's elite tier in that.
but thats technically not yoshi and instead a different one, but if that kinda was included than yes, he'd be elite
@blackopskoopa6404 I mean he used different colored Yoshis several times in the video, and the baby Yoshis. And Yoshis Island has 10 different ones. Or maybe that was only DS and the OG only used 8.

I know it's not technically a mario game but I was hoping to see Yoshi's Story on the list. It is sort of, kind of a sequel to Yoshi's island.
SMW has yosh shell abilities that makes yosh better, like yellow with shockwave landings, and blue with flight, and, most importantly, disco shell with yellow and blue, plus when yosh spits it out, red. SMW DESERVES ELITE!!!!!!!!!!!

Yoshi is my go-to fighter in ALL Smash games. That makes him an elite tier in my book😎👍
But in the current tier list, he's the 14th best character in the game (out of 89) if i remember currectly, so he's not mid in ultimate in any means

4:21 Nah, Yoshi is elite in Galaxy 2 for one main reason: the infinite flutter glitch. Sure, it may not be an “intended” use of Yoshi in that game, but you can use it to skip SOOOO many annoying planets, guarantee that you will survive a fall, and have so much fun going out of bounds and exploring planets before you are intended to. Yoshi is BROKEN in Galaxy 2

Super Mario World has Yoshi Color Powers, Blue with Shell in mouth lets you fly around which is an S-Tier ability. Super Mario 64 he rewards you for getting onto the roof a task that skilled players can do when starting the game so I would put him in barely does anything.

Wait what? I remember getting Mario striker's battle league when it first came out and it was quite clear that Yoshi was an offensive powerhouse. Powerful shooting and fast passing. For some reason his speed was slow which is highly unusual He's always fast and any of the sports games but to say that he can't score goals doesn't make any sense because literally his attributes show that he has a lot of shot power.
Anyways great video and great tier list except for what was honestly a pretty obvious mess up on Mario strikers Battle League
I hear so many people say that Mario punches Yoshi on the head, but he's NOT. He's pointing to the enemy in front of Yoshi to eat. Also the player throws Yoshi down pits, not Mario.
In some of the earlier games, you can actually see the pixels connect and Yoshi wince

In Mario 64, you just have to get all 120 stars and go onto the roof to get 100 lives: it can be done before you beat Bowser.

well there is a 1 up I think behind a pillar either on the left side or right side that is there every time you die, so you basically have unlimited lives if you can get to bowser

I was about to say "What, even in Yoshi's New Island?" but then I realized that it doesn't matter how bad the game is, Yoshi is still gonna be elite in it because he's literally the main hero.
It's kinda weird that Delfino Yoshis live on an island... but are immediately killed by water.
Also thanks for not being one of those people who look down on other people for playing Yoshi in Wonder. I, myself, played as Luigi, but the people playing as Yoshi or Nabbit are godsends in the harder levels, since they'll save your hide more times than you can count.
The gimmick with Yoshi in Sunshine is that his juice meter isn't a quantity indicator, but a timer. This is a double-edged sword. The obvious downside is that you have to periodically eat fruit in order to keep him active even if you're not spraying juice on gunk or enemies. The upside is that you can shotgun blast to your heart's content without having to constantly refill the way you do with FLUDD.
Galaxy 2's inflated Yoshi sure was the origin of some weird internet things
I've personally sent so many Yoshi's to their doom, i have the title of "Yoshicide". That's always been why i replayed Super Mario World as a kid. So my tier list would be how many creative ways i can betray Yoshi's trust.

the first wouldn't be a good isdea since mario is usually the main character in EVERY mario game, and the others usually almost never appear in other games, so most would be useless everywhere

New Super Luigi U Mario is useless. Super Mario 64 DS he is needed to beat the game but not the best character stat-wose, still very solid though. Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe and Super Mario Bros Wonder all have alternatives that are easier and New Super Mario Bros, NSMBW (and maybe NSMB2) he is optional.
Also toads in general appear quite frequently so if we're going with toads in general then that could be good.
The other 2 though are basically all useless tier with some outside

Yoshi is one of those characters that when they were first introduced, everyone loved him. I dont think one person saw him in super mario world and thought "f* that guy"

Fun fact about super Mario sunshine: if you use glitches you will have no need to use Yoshi. In any level. Also you forgot Yoshi from the thousand year door.
Technique can be more important than shooting in Strikers as the ball can bend away from Boom Boom and score easy from distance, even with a low shooting stat. Maybe he should move up a bit there.

Yoshi is like the MVP of the entire franchise.
He's only useless in Sunshine. One of the many things Sunshine got wrong. I'd say S-tier is SMW, Yoshi's Island (obviously) and Galaxy 2. Odyssey is A-tier. Most of the others are B and C. And Sunshine is its own bottom-of-the-barrel category.
Yoshi giving you cool new powers is cool and all, but limiting his benefits to places specifically designed for those benefits pretty much negates the value of those benefits. The appeal of power-ups, especially the classic Mario style of power-ups, isn't simply increased power. It's specifically to be "powered up" beyond the minimum necessary. It's the cape letting you fly, float, and have a melee attack in addition to default running and jumping in situations designed to only require small Mario's default running and jumping. In other words, to make things easier than they might otherwise be. If a power-up or different character or whatever is either required in certain places, or only usable in situations ratcheted up to offset its powers, then the power-up/different character is not making things easier. It's just evening out inflation then. As such, stage-specific limitations should significantly lower Yoshi's effectiveness usefulness rating where applicable, even if his abilities are otherwise pretty cool. Flutter jumping where it isn't even necessary is way cooler than flutter jumping where it is.
The other power-ups in the Galaxy games have the exact same problem too for that matter. A fire flower isn't very exciting at all if you can only use it in places that specifically require it and nowhere else. Then it's just a brief stage gimmick rather than a real power-up, and stage gimmicks are lame.

Your focus seems to be on standard gameplay, so I'll forgive you for not ranking SMW Yoshi as elite. He is the linchpin of so many wonderful glitches in that game, including the power-up incrementation glitch. Funny enough, use of that glitch can allow you to carry a Yoshi in your reserve box, allowing you to use him in ghost houses, castles, and fortresses. It's harder to forgive you mentioning his ability to spit fire after swallowing a red shell, but failing to note the stomp power from yellow shells, and his ability to fly from blue shells.
Out of curiosity where would Sonic Lost World theoretically be on this list?
