Using the GamePad or the Switch's touch screen, you have a cursor that allows you to directly interact with things without having to use the playable character, and that includes touching said playable character; including Toad of course. Even easier touching!

In Super Mario Brothers, you can touch the axe and Bowser same time, which makes Bowser fall into lava, and player dies same time, but is thrown all the way to Toad, touching it and falling through the floor, then you start the next level.
