- Bowser's been an awesome villain for the Mario series over the last 35+ years, and he's cooked up some pretty incredible plans... but also a lot of duds.
Today, we're looking at Bowser's character in every mainline Mario game and ranking him from worthless to elite.

In Mario Galaxy… he seems in the end like he REALLY wants Mario dead based on how insane his attacks get in the final boss. Agree that it was peak Bowser.

What about Bowser in Paper Mario 64?
I'd argue that it seemed he wanted Mario dead more in Galaxy 2.
Paper Mario 64, the Mario galaxy games, and bowser's fury were the games he didn't mess around.

Completely agree- I mean, Paper Mario 64 was the FIRST time he literally stole Peach's castle into space. Not to mention he beats Mario at the start!
especially at the start of paper mario on N64 where he defeats mario and kicks out of the castle.
Everyone's talking about Paper Mario 64 in the replies but in TTYD he's literally constantly one step behind Mario, makes one last attempt before the final boss to be relevant, and fails miserably. Truly incredible

How come nobody is talking about how Bowser in Odyssey went to other kingdoms, stole their most prized possessions just to use it for HIS wedding, made Mario chase him through every kingdom to get them back, summoned a fucking dragon to kill Mario in the middle of nowhere (like there is no stolen artifact this time Bowser knocks Mario's ship over and lands him in a deserted and unusual world, TWICE, and then summoned a dragon to kill him) all so he could have his wedding on the fucking Moon. Yeah Bowser’s motives were weird but he was lowkey trying to KILL Mario over Peach. Still a great video tho

@@DobieMeltfire IDW Eggman, despite being unmistakably cruel and sadistic, is less capable than his game counterpart. He fumbled with the Metal Virus. Despite that arc showcasing how vile the doctor is, he is alarmingly indifferent to the Zombots starting to ignore his commands. He even acknowledges that it was possible due to how viruses work, but simply says he'll think of something later. He didn't even have a backup plan for that. He didn't even develop a vaccine for it, with his only plan for avoiding infection being "Don't touch the Zombots," and he dismisses Starline's valid concerns as nitpicking. Ultimately, he loses control of everything when Starline brings over the Deadly Six to try to control the Zombots. Even though the platypus uses the Cacophonic Conch to keep the Zeti in line, it isn't enough, as he runs out of breath and the Zeti take it away from him. This forces Eggman, Starline, and Metal to retreat. Not helped by the writer's (Ian Flynn) comments; "Eggman never, NEVER has a solid plan. It's always a big execution, but he never settles on the details."

I doubt it. I think that was his plan all along. Send Mario and Luigi on a wild goose chase while he captures the Princess. After all, even if Mario and Luigi fail, he still wins because he'll have control of several lands.
...I think Mario 64 goes above 'typical bad guy' if you're counting SMB1, Lost Levels and 3 as 'pretty menacing'. He took over what is basically the centre of the Mushroom Kingdom, after all, and trapped Peach in there, but she wasn't even in a physical form. Like you could have searched every room of the castle and you wouldn't have found her.
"Hangs out with Peach at his castle"... No, Bowser Jr. has Peach the entire time, and flees whenever Mario beats the boss of that world. So other than fighting Mario two times, he doesn't actually do anything on his own.
"Galaxy 2 is basically a retelling of the first game"... Sure, if you ignore the parts where Mario doesn't end up on the Comet Observatory, goes to completely different galaxies, has new power-ups... totally the same thing as the first game. Although admittedly I think it was stated that Galaxy 2 is basically an alternate universe. But no, it's not a retelling the of the first game.
I'd say that the fact that he smashes up the Mushroom Kingdom, so you have to rebuild the place as WELL as chasing him down, would put him in pretty meancing, same at SMB1. He doesn't turn people into bricks and rocks, but he destroys all of their homes.
"He just wants that Peach" ...and the entire Mushroom Kingdom along with it.
"The game has his name in it" ...And isn't as impressive as taking over the Galaxy. He's just a mindless beast in Bowser's Fury for the most part, if memory serves. Pretty Menacing, but not Elite.
Super Mario Wonder... he steals a power that can change reality. He gains reality-altering powers, and you think that's 'typical bad guy'?

I guess it's not Bowser in conscious, but still, yknow? Something processing an already menace to his extent is quite... terrifying....

The most recent plan absolutely sucks and the only reason he got so close to completing his plan is because all the other characters are equally stupid.

in fairness to Odyssey, Bowser terrorizes multiple kingdoms, with varying intensity. While his motives seem less menacing compared to world domination, his actions that span across multiple kingdoms all across the world definitely make up for it in my book. I think he deserves either a Typical Bad Guy or Pretty Menacing tier
Also for Wonder: His plan wasnt really to just turn into a castle, but rather he did that in order to build up power for his real plan: a giant reality warping wonder of... some description. We never really get told what that really entails, as Mario beats him before he can pull it off so it's not worth as many bad guy points, but the concept itself is definitely menacing
Bowser is such a cool villain in the Super Mario Brothers Franchise! The Koopa King will do whatever it takes to take over the Mushroom Kingdom! Sure it can get repetitive when he kidnaps Princess Peach every time, but I still enjoy the story and everything! Also Jack Black makes an awesome Bowser especially when he sings Peaches!🤩😈

you also completely forgot that bowser in mario odyssey not only he had an entire kingdom for himself but he also has stolen and attacked all over the world for magical artifacts for his marriage affecting a lot of countries as well as invading all the countries with his troops (notably when he put the robot wiggler in new donk city) bowser was a world threat in Mario Odyssey that everyone in all of the countries hated and feared

Paper Mario 64s bowser is one of the most competent bowsers we’ve ever seen. He kills Mario, and locks up the gods of the mushroom kingdom. It’s a wonder why he himself didn’t just go down to finish Mario after finding out he was revived by the Star spirits.
Bowser in Galaxy 1 might honestly deserve a tier of his own because, even if it's an accident he didn't set out to cause, Bowser _destroyed a whole galaxy_ . I mean it was reborn, but still that's hands down the biggest damage he's ever caused.

It’s my head canon that in Mario 1 bowser convinced the real parents of the koopa kids to help him take over but they all died so he adopts them and then has his bio son later. In Mario 3D world he was just building an amusement park for them.

Super Mario RPG: A playable character (awesome!) but he's a 1-dimensional physical attacking tank you don't often use in boss battles (not so awesome) - Pretty Menacing
Paper Mario 64 - Steals the Star Rod and captures the 7 Star Spirits leaving the entire Mushroom Kingdom in chaos. Invincible until the power of Peach praying to Twink kicks in - Elite
Thousand Year Door - Mostly serves as comic relief but does incapacitate Grodus at the end - Weird But Alright
Super Paper Mario - Teaming up with Carrie is borderline broken for the majority of the game, enough said - Elite

Bowser is elite in Super Paper Mario as he is the most powerful character in the game. Most people defeat Super Dimentio with him thanks to his OP stomps and fire breath range!

I can't remember thinking bowser was "Awesome". He was "Pretty cool" at best in the 90's... then Mario 64 comes around and he's like "well he's okay I guess..." because we've already beaten him so much by then. A villain gets less interesting and threatening with every defeat so by the time Mario Galaxy came along I genuinely hated the character because they REFUSED to use anyone else, and nothing is exciting about a game where the main threat is someone you have beaten over and over again. Mario Galaxy 2 was when I was just DONE with the franchise and never bought a mario game since.
Now, the tier list... what in the hell is this. Worthless in Yoshis' Island? His giant baby form was the only good boss battle with him there ever was, he actually looked menacing in that form. They tried to do that again in bowsers fury but that doesn't work anymore, doesn't matter what form he takes because he's been overused past the point of being a joke.
Super Mario bros 1 and Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2... are you freaking KIDDING me. He looks like a complete idiot , his design is incomplete and terrible. His actual proper design was in Super Mario Bros 3, anything before that and he looked laughable. I know he doesn't exactly look bright in his finished design but the bowser in the first two genuinely look like they aren't smart enough to not choke to death while eating.
The Elite section makes no sense either. Mario Galaxy 2's final boss was the easiest boss I've ever fought and I've been gaming since the mid 90's. You must be putting them their because of the soundtrack ALONE, which is entirely unfitting because they're trying to make it dramatic when I've had more dramatic pisses than bowser fights. Doesn't work, the composer was talented and wasted on a insipid and weak experience.
I'm glad I skipped to the end to look at the list instead of listening because any possible reasoning for these picks would be absolute lunacy.

Because there has to be an interesting ranking for when Bowser actually helps Mario, and the original Paper Mario not only helps establish his crush on Peach, but also makes him terrifyingly effective.
Usurping the Gods, the original Castle Capture Plan, killing Mario were not for literal divine intervention, his enforcers terrozing the Kingdom with power they received from him, and (with Kamek's aid) even being prepared for Mario to reunite the Gods against him.
Easily deserves an Epic Tier, even with some bumbling on his part.
Actually the hammers are really easy to avoid. You see he throws them in an arc above to the left so if you literally just stand right in front of him he'll never hit you with them. It only becomes an issue at 8-4 because he'll both breathe fire and throw hammers but still overall easy
