Sick build and great work. I got a 2000 4runner. Was wanting make a custom plate bumper with a swing arm tire carrier but i dont really like the idea of all the added weight. As a welder/ fabricator myself ive been leaning toward this kinda route as i cant justify spending over $1000 for a prebuilt tire carrier. After watching this ill be at the metal shop monday to get whatever material i dont already have
I've been slowly modifying my Subaru Forester for off roading/overlanding as you call it in America & can see the need for a swing out tire carrier soon once I swap to all terrain tires. The cost of thee carriers commercially is well over the $1K IF you can get one that isn't super heavy so this build, your detailed design ideas/prototyping etc are giving me thoughts to do one in aircraft aluminum alloy for the major parts to keep the weight down. Your easy style of sharing information is also a joy to watch, far more entertaining than the garbage currently on TV or streaming services - this is reality worth my time, bloody well done as we say Down Under in Australia!
I've looked at high priced models similar to your design. I like how they are removable. But they are out of my price range. Yours is a great idea and something I can build and at reasonable cost! Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your ideas!
Thanks. Yeah I did look around as well but I end up just building this one for fun and was hoping to inspire others. This really benefits people that don’t have off the shelf units for their vehicles and what to fabricate their own
You have given me some great ideas, I am attempting to make a receiver hitch tire mount for my UTV side by side and just finished the mock up out of wood last week so I can transfer the pieces to metal now, but it is not a swing out design. I have never done anything like this before and still don't know how to weld and just bought my 1st welder. Now I might have to change my design, the only challenge I can see is that my tire mount will have to be much higher from the receiver hitch than yours and angled out since the hitch is recessed back under utv. so as not to have ground clearance issues. My plan was to get the square tubing pieces cut then have my future son in law weld them for me. I have always wanted to learn how to fabricate and now getting the tools needed so I can start. I wish I had started 40 yrs ago! Thanks so much for doing these videos, they are an inspiration for many people, including me where your design wouldn't work for my application, but gives the foundation for me to adapt it to mine. I've spent many hrs on youtube watching videos and this is my favorite one. and I look forward to seeing more of your videos

Great video. I got your plans and I was wandering what welder did you use (110V or 220V). I am new to welding and I just bought a Lincoln 140 welder that is only 110V. Would this be sufficient for the thickness of the metal for this project. Thanks
Thanks. TBH if you can swing a 220v welder that would be the way to go bc it will help weld thicker stuff like 1/4”. 140v may work but you may have to preheat the material to get penetration. Hopefully that helps answer your question
