- My Unique Solution For A DIY Spare Tire Cargo Box
This is not a step by step guide on how to build a cargo carrier, but being shared for inspiration and ideas for anyone looking to do the same. My solution is pretty simple. Taking roof slats, chopping them up and mounting them to my tire carrier. The cargo box I'm using is a Pelican BX55S. As far as spare tire mounts go, I think I came up with a pretty simple, useful, DIY solution.

Thanks for checking it out! I was just thinking about this setup last night actually. For a small vehicle like the Fj cruiser, I wish I had done something like this years ago. It has been such a beneficial upgrade to have this year.

You got to see my Gen 1 crap Plano prototype first hand. This is a much better solution. It can be improved of course, but it should work well. I wish I had the space your truck has! Hoping to see that bad boy on the channel within the next 4 weeks!
wonder if something like a bumpstop rubber piece from bracket to tire in that space would help absorb some of the bounce? overall great improvement.
I had considered that as well. Since the entire tire has the same shake, I’m not sure it would stabilize it much more. I’ll keep tinkering around and see what I can come up with on it.

Looks good! Thanks for sharing. Rhino Rack is suppose to be coming out with a platform hitch tray. That pelican case would probably work well for that as well.
I bet it would work great. I’ll be stoked to see the hitch tray, hopefully it utilizes their same slat system.

Do you have a recommendation to someone with a standard FJ tire mount and oversized tire? I have a backup camera in the mounting hole, so most systems won’t work. I really really just want a big box.
I wouldn’t put a box on top of the stock tire carrier, I see people mounting gas cans on the OEM door and it’s asking for trouble. Just save up for the rear bumper. I know it’s expensive, but it will cost you bent sheet metal and hinges in the long run if you don’t.

Yea, those are Rotopax. I could fit either a single 5 gallon tank there, or dual 4 gallon tanks.
