I'm putting this system together this summer. Have the pelican box already. Just need the water heater. We normally will primitive camp for up to 5 days, will be nice to have a hot shower at night.
Thank you very much !!! Finally one person who does show ""how to install'' and ''What parts do I need'' (and even better !), links to get the parts to properly install the water heater kit !!! Lord Have Mercy ! You're doing the retailer's job. They seem in a hurry to sell their kits, ...but, with poor or any explainations at all... in a kind of '' ...have fun (or not) figuring it out for yourselves !'' mode... It was not like that before... Hopefully, you'll get some type of rewards from them companies... Thank you very much again and Prosperity be upon you !!!
We bought this heater unit to wash our dogs when the weather is cooler outside. Works like a champ. I was a bit pessimistic about how well it would function, but I was impressed. In a clinch this thing would make your 3rd world situation a bit nicer. Love the idea of using the box for travel and setup.
I followed this after watching your video, and it was on-point with the instructions! To fix the issue with the hose coiling up in the water tank, I essentially made a "tumbler straw". I bought some 1/2" PVC, a coupler with regular female on one side and FPT on the other, and a nylon 1/2 MIP to 3/8" barb. I cut the end at an angle to seat better with the bottom, and it works great! You don't have to glue the coupler, as the suction from pump is plenty to keep it together. All for about $7 USD. Also, I went with a 25 ft expandable garden hose (there is a 15 ft, but it's more expensive) for the shower head. It compresses really nicely and fits a little better inside the case. Thank you very much, and happy travels!
I bought the water heater and the water pump 3 years ago when I came across this video, i need to finish putting this together as i like to go camping alot with my family.
This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).
" . . . if you found this . . .". This is probably one of the BEST IDEAS & MOST USEFUL videos I've ever seen! You, dude, r a genius! Thank you for being you. And thank you for taking the time to make this video! Very complete & comprehensive.
You could probably not have done that video any better. Such a detailed yet down to earth (no marketing/ overboard crap) tutorial. This is exactly what I wanted to do with mine and you just made it a hell of alot easier. Cheers bro. Keep em coming.
I bought this exact one for my RV once my in house tank split. It works no problem with the RV's fresh water tank pump and it works only when I turn the shower head on so uses much less water. Another HUGE bonus is it uses it's own separate propane tank. I even mounted it on the shower wall. The flame is contained within it and poses no huge risk, however it is wise to be very vigilant in that sense, but can be done.. Love it so far.
BTW thanks for leaving the "forgot the battery" part, during your editing, makes me feel a lot better about some other SNAFU's that just happens with builds such as this. I pretty much followed your build and it's working very well. Can't wait to go camping (with hot water onboard). Thanks for this great video on how to make life better, out there. Nice build!!
Very helpful build information, Thank You! I really like how compact and self-contained this is, it will be a nice piece of kit for our teardrop. We use the teardrop for camping, but we also have it set up as a 'bug-out' rig in the event of wildfire or other natural disaster. We already have solar, LP gas and water onboard, so this is like the icing on the cake. I used a few of your links and like the way you set this up, so will follow your build pretty much spot on, with the exception of using silicone 3/8" tubing on the outlet side. I also want to access water various ways, trailer source, Jerrycan, or just throw the intake into a creek or lake. Should all be possible with a few extra fittings and hose. Thanks again, great instructions! I also made connections for an external battery (alligator clips) and, cigar lighter.
I am doing one similar to you. Thanks for finding that bsp gas fitting... had a hard time finding one. I was going to just go straigh through the box through drilled holes but did not want to do that. For the battery door i ended up unscrewimg the batterh box flipping it around so the door swings away from the fitting. Just did a a bix with a pump.and water filter... and the cost of the plumbing parts was rediculous. Not to mention trial and error. You have a good setup! CHEERS!
Great setup! Just wanted to mention to you and others that may build one of these that you don't really require clamps on the suction line of your pump since it will always have negative pressure ( vacuum) on it when the pump is running. I like the idea of the quick connect on the pressure hose. By throwing in a garden hose head attachment with quick connect, you can pop it on and just run cold water through it to blast a little crud off your feet or tires or wake up a friend who has overslept (from a safe distance).
Excellent instructions. Made this today off your parts list and step by step instructions and it works perfectly. I did up size to the slightly larger Pelican box and everything fit nicely inside.
I ordered the heater, pump and case. The heater and pump arrived today. Now going to the hardware store for the hose, clamps and the other hardware needed next week to assemble mine just like yours. Thanks for saving me the chore of fitting everything to make mine also easy carry and use. Cheers!
Nice build! I like the idea of mounting it in a box. I have a similar shower heater. It’s a different brand (Eccoflow) but looks almost identical. I ended up mounting the pump underneath my off-road trailer and mounting RV type inlet/outlet fittings on a panel on the outside of the trailer. So when I want to shower, I take out two hoses, one from the tank to the inlet, and one from the outlet and into the heater. Both have garden hose quick connect fittings. The shower head that comes with your heater looks a lot better than the one that came with mine. The on/off button on mine would constantly get stuck and was almost impossible to use, so I went to Home Depot and bought a new shower head and mounted a 1/4 turn ball valve on it. Works great.
Henrik, instead of traditional shower head, you could buy a socalled "bide-shower-head", wich is originally used for the toilet sides. On this tap there is the flow switch included in the shower head handing
Thank you so much for this. I have the same propane hot water pump and when I opened the box I didn’t know I would need all this extra stuff to make it how I like… just like you’ve done lol!
You're a genius. Thanks for sharing. The only update is to route the hose that was leaking outside of box so if it leaks it doesn't sit in box, you don't want to store water and 12v connections in same space.
Im not going to go with a water heater like this, i don't want the hassle of storage, getting a small tank refilled, getting a shower tent, the costs will just add up to being an expensive pain in the butt. That being said, i watched the whole video and think you did a great job. Im going to go with the sixty dollar drop in the 5 gal bucket pump, and just heat a gallon of water to add to the 3 gallons of water in the bucket and be able to shower in my cargo trailer. If i was going to spend the money on all this, i would follow your set up. It's really a nice setup the way you did it. Great job!
Awesome idea! I've been using black solar shower bags. I would have to boondock a lot to justify the cost of everything you used to make this awesome build.
Thanks! Needed the motivation tonight! I thought a pump might be needed! I was thinking gravity fed except it would be easier to be able to pull water from whrever you wanted instead of lifting a bucket
Fantastic build. Very, very well done....beautiful. I'm sure you will work out the can hose problem...pvc or copper or whatever....be sure to cut the end at an angle.
I have a Triton 10LPropane camp shower heater that supplies hot water for my cabin. Have used it for the past four years and have never had a problem with it. I love the fact that it only uses propane where you turn the hot water on. Wouldn't take for it and will always have one in my cabin.
You can build so many of those things that ran your cost up. Nice job and thanks for presenting this link and idea. You can get an adapter to refill the mini fuel cans (1-2 lbs)
I use a heat exchanger on my rig, I use the engine to heat up the water, it moves through the system so quick it's never too hot except when you first turn it one Water enters a line at the back of the truck through water storage or stream to heat exchanger then travel back via RV pump.
I did something similar but used a quick connect coupler for the gas connection as well. That saves having to screw the gas hose onto the heater every time you set it up - you just have a short section of gas hose permanently connected in the same way you have done for the shower head.
You buy a water heater then you find out it should be installed outside but you also find out it can't be in the weather. These manufacturers need to wake up that people like once it is assembled they don't like to pull it apart to store it inside every time they use it. Thanks for your idea -I've ordered a hard suit case to mount it in on the side of my caravan [$70 Au dollars] because we've had light rain almost every day for 3 weeks. The output hose is too short and it has quick release for the water connections but not on the gas ,but in saying this the unit works great
BSPP (British Standard Parallel Pipe) type fittings are almost unheard of here in the US where NTP is king. It appears that ALL of these little on-demand propane water heaters use the same BSPP fittings. I did one last year and it took me weeks and lots of $$ to find adapters. Your readers don't realize how lucky they are that you have already done the leg work for them.
Really like this set up. Just a suggesting on the pump hose. There is a silicone hose in that size that is much more pliable/relaxed than the vinyl/mesh tubing. It just behaves better and can hang more freely whereas the vinyl likes to remain coiled.
If this is going to be your final design, instead of machine screws and nuts, you could use some blind rivets. They would not come loose from vibrations, and would look a lot more cleaner. Been looking for a idea for a overland rig and this just what I was thinking myself.
A really Great Idea! Call me crazy, but after a day of camping, being covered in sweat, DEET, and bonfire smoke I like a quick shower before sliding into bed in my little 2010 Ford Transit Connect Campervan I am building. I installed a 15 gallon water tank, have pressurized water for my sink and current cold water shower. Just need a "T"connector for my 1/2 sized propane tank and connect it up. Makes camping much more civilized and nice to come home after a long weekend clean. oh, I like your shirt, Heathen? Happy Travels!
This is cool. If you are trying to save as much water as possible you could put a funnel into the jerry can and spray the cold water back into your can while waiting for the water to heat up.
Very cool, clean & consolidated setup. That mini propain canister is tiny!! When your running the system, it's obviously doing so with the case open like a book right? It would be very cool to mount everyrhing in a case a touch larger and reverse so the weight of the water heater wasnt straining the hinges over time. Then mount everything the way you did, but flush to the side of the case tapping through it with male ends exposed on the outside, that way you can make some vent holes in the top for the hot air to escape with a little fairing above to keep rain out. Then the gas line, the water inlet & outlet all have quick connections that just snap onto the closed case . That way you could mount it on the back next to the water source and only open it to service it. It would look clean and organized. You could even throw a padlock on the door to keep people out of it .
Thanks for making this video. My water pressure was too low to ignite the pilot. I bought a smaller water hose and remedied that problem. I'm just wondering how you got enough pressure from a can. Interesting....
In a moment of weakness, I splurged on the Joolca recently. Part of it was that I was intimidated by assembling one of these myself. If I had seen your video, I would not have been. I very much like that it is all contained in a weather resistant box that could go on my roof rack.
If the can has a vent, you could adapt the cap with a fitting & set can on its side. Less likely to leak if no lower fitting. Could add a vent or small hole on tank top opposite the cap if not vented. Cap can then be moved from one tank to another if needed.
Definitely building one of these for my camper van. I shower at Planet Fitness most of the time but it would be nice to have this as an option when I’m off grid.
I own two Camplux shower units. Love them both. My opinion is that it's worth the extra money to get the biggest one available. They're both great but more water is better.
If it is summertime you can heat your water with the sun. Buy some black 5 gallon buckets and leave them in the sun. It does work to hear it up but if it is really hot outside you will appreciate having cool water for a relaxing shower. I bought a 12v shower pump with a cigarette lighter for powering it with your vehicle. I have a battery pack I use to power it. I bought a pop up shower tent on amazon and my shower system works awesome. I only use this shower set up in the summer when camping a different festivals.
I've been using a black water containing on my van roof for having a shower . I don't have to wash my hair as I not got any . It's cheap and works plus light weight . Yours is a good idea though . Thank you for your video
This is incredible!!! You made something cumbersome into a nice compact system 👍 Awesome!! Trying to work out your accent like Kiwi, Aussie, Canadian 👍
If you put the shower tube inside another tube, with an air gap between them, that ought to provide enough insulation to prevent that little bit of water in the handle from getting cold, but that's just a pluperfect. Great build!
I solved the curling up problem I also had with a water hose in a 5-gallon sink water container by zip-tying the hose to a 1/4" stainless steel rod from Home Depot. I cut it to be as long as the jug is deep and used 4 zip-ties spaced evenly along the length. Has worked for 10 months now, and I take it in and out weekly to fill the jug.
Great idea! What if you get a slightly bigger box and cut out ventilation at the top and use a small camp stove16oz propane tank and fit everything inside the box rather than on the penal, is that possible?
Cool video very informative for my setup of interest I'm curious about essentially the portable tank addon you could make by getting the jug with the spout you recommended briefly in the end you could use the supply line going to the show head for the direct input to the jug and then run another quick connect line from the spout with a house do you think this might interfere with the water pressure would I need to modify the lid how would I get the water back out of the jug if it's supply feed from the water tank goes into the spout how do I get it to go into the new hose for my actual shower head?
Great video mate! Just purchased one of these on Friday of last week and and using later this week when I go away. Probably won't have time to do this to the setup, but it certainly is on the list of projects. Just nice way to have it all in one place. Question for you though. I assume that the heat coming out of the top of the system is not hot enough to melt the plastic? Also, off the pump, could you not have put a 90degree elbow in at the inlet to avoid the bend in the hose? Just a thought. Cheers!
You could of connected the quick disconnects through the case so it’s all plug n play with no water leaking inside to corrode the heater fins and electric ignition. I made mine fit on a small luggage hand cart and also put a transformer so I have the option of running it off of 110v or 12 volt
I thought about that, but the amount it leaks after use, I wanted it all self-contained! With the heater unit being in the lid, it will hopefully drain into the bottom of the box!
Some ideas I have are to hard pipe the connections inside the box to maximize space and plumb these to the walls of the box with quick disconnects to the outside of the box. That way you don’t have to mess with anything inside the box. I also have a pump pressurized water tank so I am going to try and use that with out the electric pump.
Wow, this is so timely for me. My wife and I subscribed to you a few months ago for overlanding since we're moving to Utah this year but we just decided that we're going to convert an old school bus "Skoolie" into a motorhome and travel around a few years. Or maybe forever? We were thinking of going with an instant hot water heater so this is perfect timing! We're going to make the back part of the bus a garage for tools and two dualsport motorcycles and tow my 2000 4Runner Limited behind it. It'll be a sweet Overlanding setup! 🤘
Nice video . Here’s a Suggestion for your fresh water can . You can buy a plastic sink Riser They are very Sturdy and just drill a hole your water jug and cut the riser for the proper Length and slid your 3/8 hose and clamp it . That it will solve your problem of the hose Curling in the water jug. The risers are a couple of bucks and they are about 30 in long. BTW the end of the riser that goes into the jug make sure you cut it in a 45 degree angle to prevent and blockage at the bottom.
Nice job! Just a tip, I have those same black and brass quick connectors - keep them lubed with a light lubricant or they get sticky and fail to couple correctly. You'll see the little ball bearings inside the female ends.
To keep the hose from curling up inside the water container attach a 12" length of PVC pipe with zip-ties. As if you were applying an improvised splint to a broken finger or limb. Great project! Thanks!
i would find a 400watt dehumidifier and hook it to solar power in your van / truck / car and this way you will always have water for you shower at the end of the day in the middle of nowhere, sure its not drinkable but good enough for a shower, i would add that to your list
Is the MP case you have listed on the parts list the same one you used in the video? It is obviously larger than the minimum but it seem bigger (hoping so it’s not so tight). You are a pro at putting things in a box. Thoroughly love my diesel heater in the metal box-thanks for all your help.
I use the same Jerry can, and what I did to solve the problem of the hose coiling up, slip a piece of rigid pvc pipe over the hose that’s about a foot long or so that goes inside the can. It’ll keep the hose straight. It does for me anyway. Cheers.
Cool idea. However we removed the propane hot water heaters from our buses. So did my buddy. Really liking the cheap solar energy available these days and the electric water heater. More and more people are going all electric. I will add that I do most of my boondocking in the sunny desert. And I still have some propane for backup cooking method.
Be careful. With most of the cheap on demand water heaters if you preheat the water much it might come out scalding hot. They don’t modulate enough. Did he try that? Why not just insulate the pipes of a inside water heater and run a hose out the window? Mine wastes a little water too. But this will work for those without indoor plumbing.
To stop the hose from curling in the water can. Use a stiff piece of wire and poke it up the hose . make a sharp U bend at the bottom to that you can bend it tight enough to the hose that it doesn't fall out . Easy to put in and easy to remove if needed and it will keep your hose straight.
Nice packaging in Pelican style case. I have similar style set up without Pelican case and use adapter to 1lb green propane tank that you might be able to get into a Pelican case making the setup even more slick. also don’t have a Jackery but use the car battery with a long cord from unit to rear of vehicle where I use it.
One thing about that water heater is that is very sensitive to winds if it's not shielded properly. It will effect the consistency of the hot water flow and you will end up wasting a lot of water while it gets cold and waiting to heat back up again.
Very nice! A simple thin strip of wood or ? taped to the water supply hose would stop it from curling and would have constant contact to the bottom of the jerry can. Wood dowel?
I set up water and pump system but really like your idea to keep the unit stored and damage free. 1 question however, doesn't the heat rising from the unit damage the otter box? seems like it would if not right away over time. Do you do anything not mention in this video to minimize the impact?
Mine just arrived. They are no longer 4.33" deep, even though the Amazon description says so. They are over 5.5", too deep to fit anything else in the case. I'm OK with that though, it seems like the back of the heater is going to get very hot. There is a paper thin heat shield between the flame and the back of the heater. It needs some fireproof insulation before I would mount it to anything plastic. I guess I will just use my new tough case to store the heater when not in use. Maybe I'll get a smaller case and mount the pump, hoses, & battery. I love the idea though.
The only hoses I would have changed is the main shower head hose, leave the rest as a trial until something breaks or u use it enough to design it different. Good video.
Don't want to build your own? Joolca's HOTTAP is a fantastic (and maybe even better) alternative for less: ruclips.net/video/XiTLajwa1_U/видео.html
I'm putting this system together this summer. Have the pelican box already. Just need the water heater. We normally will primitive camp for up to 5 days, will be nice to have a hot shower at night.
How hot does the water get?
Joolca is overpriced junk
I bought a buck converter to get the 12V voltage down to 3V to see If I can directly power the heater without the D cell batteries
I looked at the link you posted, your DIY is still far superior than Joolcas options
Enjoying your videos 🤙🏽

I have a Triton 10LPropane camp shower heater that supplies hot water for my cabin. Have used it for the past four years and have never had a problem with it. I love the fact that it only uses propane where you turn the hot water on. Wouldn't take for it and will always have one in my cabin.
Camplux, providing you an easy and efficient outdoor life style! Thank you for your support and love for camplux products!
Thanks for the clear instructional video, and an even better list of parts and notes. Should make putting one together less trying for sure.
You can build so many of those things that ran your cost up. Nice job and thanks for presenting this link and idea. You can get an adapter to refill the mini fuel cans (1-2 lbs)
I use a heat exchanger on my rig, I use the engine to heat up the water, it moves through the system so quick it's never too hot except when you first turn it one Water enters a line at the back of the truck through water storage or stream to heat exchanger then travel back via RV pump.
thats cool , similar to the HotBox device from Aphcarios
I have the same one I put it in my RV I had it is it for 2 years it is fantastic and I also put one in my house in the basement and it does the job
Wow great ideal, you can make a few and sell them. Campers would go for this
Definitely interested in purchasing complete.
I did something similar but used a quick connect coupler for the gas connection as well. That saves having to screw the gas hose onto the heater every time you set it up - you just have a short section of gas hose permanently connected in the same way you have done for the shower head.
Do you have a link for the coupler you used?
@@RevereOverland This is the one I use: gasproducts.co.uk/8mm-quick-release-gas-hose-coupling.html
You don't need to get a $27 fitting from McMaster. It's just a 3/8 male flare x 1/2 in female NPT elbow. $6.99 at ACE (part #47187)
I like that idea! I’ll probably upgrade in the future.
Brilliant video just ordering the stuff as moving into my van next month and a shower that’s hot with pressure is an absolute necessity ,thanks bud
Enjoy. Ours was a game changer on this last trip!
I've used mine for two summers working great
Great for power outages! Good Job. Building one soon.
This is amazing! I just got my camplux and have been wondering how to wire a 12v system close to it.... Perfect video to find :)!
Add washers to the screws that come through the case before the nuts pull through the plastic, Distribute the pressure!
Pretty sure he did
You presented that very well. Simple and straightforward. Thanks a bunch!
Glad it was helpful!
Good post. also good for off-grid camp.
If the can has a vent, you could adapt the cap with a fitting & set can on its side. Less likely to leak if no lower fitting. Could add a vent or small hole on tank top opposite the cap if not vented. Cap can then be moved from one tank to another if needed.
great idea to initially recirculate the water to preheat it!
We usually get to camp too late for anything more than an hour or two of evening sun!
I was just planning out this project and stumbled across your video. Thank you for listing all the parts. 🙂
I've been using a black water containing on my van roof for having a shower . I don't have to wash my hair as I not got any . It's cheap and works plus light weight . Yours is a good idea though . Thank you for your video
Hello, I thought you could use a pvc pipe to slide it inside to keep it straight.
This is incredible!!! You made something cumbersome into a nice compact system 👍
Awesome!!
Trying to work out your accent like Kiwi, Aussie, Canadian 👍
Good video. Great setup.
Maybe put a weight on end of the jerry can hose.
just a hint or xtra easy mode wraps the ptfe tape around a pen or pencil then easier to wrap around thread more room to go around.
Have on of those at my off grid cabin. Works great. Nothing like a hot shower in the middle of nowhere.
Does the exhaust melt the plastic? Looks like a tight fit. Great video!
Cheers!
I am wondering about the plastic melting as well if used frequently or for long periods of time
You could of connected the quick disconnects through the case so it’s all plug n play with no water leaking inside to corrode the heater fins and electric ignition.
Brilliant! Thanks for the visual on the build.
Might make a good heated coil system for camping. One coil wrap just under your cot would be comfy
Excellent!
Very detailed setup amen. Kudos on your design and editing!
BRILLIANT! No more quick, cold showers for me
Some ideas I have are to hard pipe the connections inside the box to maximize space and plumb these to the walls of the box with quick disconnects to the outside of the box.
Nice! Utah is probably my favorite state to visit. Sounds as though you have some great plans!
woah, I'm a Scot K. nice to meet ya
So glad to find this review! Have been looking at this one for sometime. It is a game changer for camping!
Nice job! Just a tip, I have those same black and brass quick connectors - keep them lubed with a light lubricant or they get sticky and fail to couple correctly. You'll see the little ball bearings inside the female ends.
Great job!! I am setting up a slightly different setup on my teardrop, but your video was a HUGE help to me. Thanks
Very interesting - You could tie the input hose to a rigid bar or stick, should stop it coiling up in the can.
To keep the hose from curling up inside the water container attach a 12" length of PVC pipe with zip-ties. As if you were applying an improvised splint to a broken finger or limb. Great project! Thanks!
I imagine myself waking up and taking a shower as long as I want with this thing.
If you're near a source of water, you can!
i would find a 400watt dehumidifier and hook it to solar power in your van / truck / car and this way you will always have water for you shower at the end of the day in the middle of nowhere, sure its not drinkable but good enough for a shower, i would add that to your list
I'm thinking 10,000 BTU air conditioning unit, that way you get the water AND cooling
Revere Overland Have you found any portable DC air conditioners to try?
This is friggin' BRILLIANT! I'm starting my build with this week's check 😎👍
Did you do it?
@@m.d.498 I most certainly did! Placed my order and just waiting for the delivery 😎👍
Cheers.
Great idea!
I need this setup when I buy my new truck. Great video.
I can't pinpoint where your accent is from? Australian?
It doesn’t
Mine just arrived. They are no longer 4.33" deep, even though the Amazon description says so. They are over 5.5", too deep to fit anything else in the case.
I'm OK with that though, it seems like the back of the heater is going to get very hot. There is a paper thin heat shield between the flame and the back of the heater. It needs some fireproof insulation before I would mount it to anything plastic. I guess I will just use my new tough case to store the heater when not in use. Maybe I'll get a smaller case and mount the pump, hoses, & battery. I love the idea though.
That’s a shame. Can you modify the dials maybe?
The plastic of the case should be fine. It has a very high melting temperature.
Nice set up I glad it works for you
i use a piece of PEX plumbing pipe so it stay stiff in the jerry can ;)
nice video good job
The only hoses I would have changed is the main shower head hose, leave the rest as a trial until something breaks or u use it enough to design it different. Good video.
