On a convoy security mission in Afghanistan we went through a small village in the morning where the street was clear and found they had built a three foot tall speed bump when we came back through, at 55 mph. Snapped a much larger spindle than you have there off of the lead truck who hit it at full speed and we had to figure out where to stash that spare so we could continue mission. I think your spindle is plenty strong, just mind your speed over the speed bumps. :)

I love how the tire carrier acts as "security" for the traction boards. It's little pieces of brilliance and forward thinking that separate the good from the great. It's all in the details.

Putting a padlock on the clasp is a good idea. As a locksmith I would recommend getting a good quality padlock. One that has pick resistance. A lot of padlocks are pretty easy to pick. You get what you pay for.

Gonna need more than a padlock in tacompton...
Also think you should drill out some holes in your "accessory mount" tube. Kinda like the jackstands so you can just use the pin to help secure whatever you end up building to put there. Plus side is then you can have a few different interchangeable accessory options as well.

Swing arm set up makes lots of sense! If I recall correctly, the tailgates open to the passenger side so they aren't opening into traffic. Not so much a problem on the trail but something to keep an eye on if in the city 👊

  • @danielhurst8863

Latching to the door carrier transfers your sag weight to the door hinges, certainly not as much weight as the original tire, but it may limit your door weight carry for the future. Plus, as you stated, the bumper and body shift differently, but you have more than enough off road experience to know what you are doing. I wouldn't have tried that approach for fear that long term it would cause wear, so I appreciate being able to take advantage of your skill.
I've often wondered why tire carriers are not driver side mounted, for exactly the reasons why you are doing yours this way. It gives you the back side of the carrier as a cargo/cooking area. Because I've never encountered one, I figured there must be some downside I'm unaware of. The obvious ones don't seem all that bad. Harder to open the back door as you have two swings now, and if in a parking area, you have to be far more careful of opening the tire carrier. I really can't wait to see how you finish this because I'll change my plans to driver side swing based on your experience. Your channel gives me confidence to attempt builds I've been scared to try, as they are different than most, so thank you.

    • @wolfkin73
      @wolfkin73 3 года назад

The only downside i see is if your using an awning you have to walk around the tire carrier to get around it, putting you out in the weather. Or if you are in a smaller parking space walking around the tire puts you in the brush.
I don't think its really a problem, not sure id do it, a table is movable.

  • @garypease7414

Put a support or latch from the tire carrier to the stock mount area so the standard vibration of off road driving doesn't let the carrier flex into that back window. Just a thought.

This looks pretty beefy. Gonna be sweet to see the end result. The coolest latch I've seen for a bumper tire carrier so far has to be a bumper I saw where the guy pulled out the door lock from a truck and welded it into a little frame on the bumper. You swing the carrier closed and it auto latches just like a door and pull on a knob and it opens like a door. Was pretty slick.

  • @kleinbiker1

I know people have tons of opinions on this stuff, and here is mine. I love the stuff you integrated into the factory spare tire mount location but I would have definitely tried to create a way to make the swing out latch to the bumper itself. A reinforced plate coming off the bottom of the box tubing that’s just big enough to mount the latch and the the hook on the vertical surface of the bumper. Just my thoughts but either way amazing job all around.

Hey Nate, how the latch works is through mechanical advantage (like how a visegrip works), meaning it needs to have that angle in the latch portion. The tension allows for the latch to want to stay locked. Just wanted to throw that out, throwing on that padlock would def prevent it from coming undone, for sure.

I just purchased the same EMS kit 2 weeks before your last video. Glad I waited to start my build! I am building off the drivers side also, barn doors on my Burb so sides don't matter that much. But I want to keep the tire out of sight as much as possible so it's going far drivers and jerry can going on the passenger side. Keeps the bulk of the weight closer to the hinge to help prevent breakage from leverage. I was also planning on going 180* out and having a table flip down.

G'day Nate from Down-under ! As I'm the 300th comment, looks like you're on the way towards a 300Tdi conversion soon ? Think about a cantilever hinged fixing of the spare tire bracket with gas struts, so it's less painful removing and attaching the 37" rubber at ground level, instead of hoisting 100 pounds - 6 feet off the deck.

  • @PROXIMO22

with a swing out tire carrier being used as part of your camp kitchen, you will want a spring pin at the hinge to lock that carrier open at 90º or 180º. wind and gravity will possibly ruin your cooking experience.

Great video my dad and I built a tire carrier on a 77 model full size blazer years ago that held a 34” monster muddier on 10” wide wheel we made it outta stainless steel. To bad there’s not a way to cheaply raise and lower the spare tire so as to help with the center of gravity until you need to raise it up to clear an obstacle

Make sure the corner of each side of the bumper can carry the weight of the vehicle. With aftermarket bumpers that mount only along the center trailer hitch, the bumper is at risk of bending up when you hang the ass-end off a ledge...and you will, these are real ass-draggers.
Incorporating outer mounting support from the corners to the frame will serve you well.

I was thinking, also, that the latch you welded on has a deeper latch, and even if the lever were to trip, the bar would have a much more difficult time coming out from behind the latch, but you're putting a lock on it, but if someone ever forgot to put the lock back on in a hurry, it still would be difficult to come out from behind the latch you welded on. You have spent a lot of time, not to mention labor and material, building this to be an overland vehicle. You've really done some great work on this, Nate!

I would repurpose a hood latch or a door latch that uses a pin to latch instead of what you’ve got. Because of you concerns of the body flexing and the latch coming undone. With a enclosed pin style latch it won’t be able to wiggle out when the body is flexed out.

  • @MrJamesLuz
    @MrJamesLuz 3 года назад

For a safety back up latch, have a spring loaded pin on the swing arm that interfaces with a hole in the bumper. That way if you are ever off camber and something happens to the latch (or someone yanks it) the swing arm won’t fly backwards. You’ll also hear the pin hitting the bumper if the latch comes loose.

most rear bars/wheel carriers built in Australia have a metal tab coming down from the swing away arm that lands against the rear bar itself and then has an over centre latch to go over it and clamp it down. that'd be an easy way to have the carrier secured to the rear bar rather than body

  • @JohanWiid

I'm looking forward to video in about a year's time about how terrible bearings are when used in spare wheel carriers. You actually want a brass or delrin bush that can't get crushed like the bearing cage. The lever action and twist is not what bearings were designed to handle. Most of the time the receive loads in one plane, now they get it in all three. The bearing on a swingarm rarely does more than a 90deg rotation, 120deg at most. Then it remains stationary when closed. So it keeps getting hammered in the same location and they all fail. I've had to replace quite a few on my carriers on a hilux and land cruiser 76. I enjoy your channel and keep up the good work.

for the secondary latch safety on the tire carrier, have you thought about doing a simple drop pin( like seen on exercise machine on the weight stack) through the swing arm into the actual bumper? this will allow you to quickly engage and disengage the extra safety precaution with in seconds, I would also recommend running a thin cable through the pin and have permanently attached to the swing arm to prevent losing the actual pin.

The reason all DOT approved bumpers with a tire carrier's on the US market swing to the right is to ensure it doesn't swinging out into on coming traffic if for any reason the locking mechanism fails.

It is interesting no one does a drivers side swing. When I built my bumper and carrier I contemplated it for the same reasons you did. I ultimately decided not to for easy access loading and unloading things in the back of the Jeep, since it’s my daily driver/work vehicle etc.

Hi Nate, excellent work as always.
Can I suggest 2 things experience says (spent 29 years with Discos) rear door hinges can just about cope with a standard tyre but rust on the pillar top/bottom is very common.
Also here in the UK D2 rear chassis turns to Swiss cheese and is one of the main reasons these get scrapped and you can purchase a rear 1/2 chassis.

I opted not to get a rear bumper with a tire carrier because they all stick out way too far. Sticking out that far drastically reduces departure angle and I didn't want that much weight hanging out that far and eventually ripping apart the unibody on my XJ. The bumper I went with ties into the frame rails where the hitch mounts. Honestly, I had hoped for more ground clearance but I might end up cutting some of the lower section off or something. Since I can't make a bumper myself, I had to go with what was available and cheap. Pretty happy so far though with my decision.

Don't forget to add a light to illuminate your tire carrier table work space.

Hey Nate. Loving the build so far. Just wanted to point out one detail you might not have thought of. The fact that you mounted the swing mount latch to the chassis rather than the bumper has a potential problem. If you get bumped from the back, or back-up into something, all the force will be directed to the door and inevitably smash it. Kind of defeats the purpose of a "bumper". Just my two cents. Cheers brother!

I had the same problem with the EMS latch. Its made to lock over 90 degrees. My solution was to simply clearance the handle portion of the latch to let the red handle swing a little closer to my swing out. Problem solved and the latch no longer pops open.

If you are worried about the latch coming lose, you can get the same snap action latch that has a locking feature built in. Check out McMaster Carr.

I understand the lock on the latch and I think it’s a great idea for security and to keep it from accidentally opening, but it looks like the latch has some adjustment with the nuts that are on the u-shaped piece, close to the handle. If those can come off, does the latch come apart? Might be worth welding those nuts in place to make the crack heads work a little harder if they do want to steal anything.

I was thinking about this as well. The reality is anyone with the right tooling could get this tire if they wanted to. That said, I'm trying to decide what level I want to get to before I decide that if they want it that bad they can have it. Lol. At the end of the day, 99% of the time this will be locked in my shop or parked in my back yard

Nate, you need to come up with an led backlight behind the tire carrier for when you are working in the kitchen.
I mean, you don't need to, but man it would be nice. Appreciate you man.

haha, I would have said "polyurethanized" too. Bumper looks great, and I agree there aren't any dimple dies, it can't be Nates!!! XD Just a couple things about the tire carrier. 1) I think you can lower that tire about 6" to 8" and drop your center of gravity a little. 2) It might look really cool if you can tilt the tire forward towards the vehicle a bit. maybe by bending that round tube somewhere to give it a little angle, not anything serious, but just a little angle towards the vehicle might look cool.

  • @BrianW2979

Nate, you could build a latch into the polyurethane support that allows it to close but not open without pressing the catch down. (like a door latch)

You need some way to hold both door and carrier open. Camp sites aren't always level. With one swinging one way and the other the opposite they will always be closing on you.

So if you are putting a table on the swing out, even though it seems super sturdy, have you thought about adding a quick release pole near the latch so when using it it does help relieve any extra stress on those bearings and spindle?

since ur tire is a bit higher up, while ur on dirt roads or rock climbing. that tire has some much more leverage its may sway and hit ur rear door on the truck. push and pull on it vigorously and see how it looks.

Crazy idea, to make the wheel be able to be opened either left or right?
put two hinges and then build some sort of Heavy-duty latch that can connect and disconnect, and you can choose which side to open it with. Then you only open it to the right normally and when you want to use the tailgate you open it to the left.
No idea how to do that though...
