This video made me buy this also but thought I'd post a couple problems I had installing it on my 2011 Outback to help others if they are buying it. I really like it so far but 2 problems I had: 1) my wheel matched only two of the bolt holes in the Hitchgate. The manual says you need three bolts; their customer service said that two should be secure enough but I wanted the extra security so had to get another drilled. 2) the wheel bolts that come with the Hitchgate they say are the standard 12x1.25, but the thread is different than those on my Outback so you can't use the same lug nuts for your Hitchgate and car. I wanted to put my Outback's locking lug nuts on my Hitchgate spare but instead I had to go to an automotive store and have them find ones with the proper thread that would fit.
This package looks real good on the vehicle. Clean, not cluttered on the rear. Good height and not seeing anything from the video. Safety clip on the retention pin? not going to pop out and lose it going down the road. License tag, DUA is the airport identifier for Durant, Eaker Filed, Southeastern Oklahoma State Univ. The have a fine Aviation program there. It is across the road from the Choctaw Casino, My wife's home away from home....SAVE ME HENRY!! If those tired will fit under my truck, I may check into them. Dr Matt, DemoRanch just bought a set for his Raptor. Said it was the quietest over the Toyo's by a LOT. You have done real good Lance.
I wondered the same about a retention key on the pin, but it has a pretty solid detent that seems to hold it just fine so I'm not worried. Thanks Randy!
Excellent job brother and it looks awesome. When you mentioned these to me awhile back I wasn't exactly sure how it fit on the car. This is pretty sweet! Thank you for sharing.
Another option I just learned about is to take a "shaved" full sized tire and wheel and put that in the spare tire area of the vehicle. A pro shop does the shave--which is not dangerous--just takes off enough for it to fit in there, then you get the benefit of a full sized tire and spare. Do keep in mind, the tiny spare disables the all wheel drive system, which does figure into the expense calculation. IF you are way out there and lose a tire, you might feel a lot better swapping in a full sized tire for the drive to services. Of course, you also have the expense of buying a new, full sized tire and wheel, that alone is not cheap.
I’m sold on the high clearance model. I wasn’t sure which one to get for my Element but I like the look of the high clearance more. I want to get rid of the spare tire on my element to have more storage inside for tools and camp gear. I just need to wait on some other fun accessories I ordered for the Element to show up and to save of some more money.
I don't think I'd trust using the migrated receiver for any sort of towing or recovery given the geometry and how it would impart that force onto the frame of the Forester. On a true body on frame truck, then yes, I'd say it's usable, but not on the lightweight unibody crossover "frames" like our Subarus use. I have no math to back up these claims; just knowing what these are made of and I wouldn't trust yanking my vehicle or another vehicle out using that offset point.
Hey Highjak thanks for sharing the Video. This Tire Carrier is a Nice Simple Idea that any Machine, Welding Shop can Fabricate for a Fraction of the Price. Buy the Material from a Local Metals Store. a length of Chanel Iron 2.5" x 1/4", a length of Rectangular Tubing 2.5" x 1" x 1/4", a Steel Bar 1.5" dia. x 3" with a 5/8" Hole through it, weld to the Rectangular Tubing for the Pivoting Arm. 2 Pieces 1/4" x 4" x 12" Flat Steel weld onto the Chanel Iron to house the Pivot Arm with 2 - 5/8" dia. Holes for the Pivot Bar & Hitch Pin. A 5/8" Hitch Pin from Tractor Supply and take it to a Local Welding shop to Fabricate it. It shouldn't cost you any more than 300.00 in total and will be a lot stronger. Of course you will have to figure out the lengths of Material need or take your Vehicle to the Shop & they will figure it out & might give you a price with the Material included. I will be making one for my GMC Savana Van as it's a pain in the ass to remove the Spare Tire from under the Chevy-GMC Vans & Trucks as they rust out. God-for-Bid you are on a Highway with a Flat; you most definitely will need a Tow to a Garage to remove the Spare Tire..
Looks really good. I don't think (and I keep referring to your SH Forester) the SH could have looked as agressive. At least not aesthetically. Proud of you!!👍
Very nice set up! Your car looks great! I just got an '18 SJ 25.i and I've been looking for solutions to carry a spare that don't involve throwing it in the cargo area/roof. Have you noticed a huge difference with all the added weight to the rear of your car? Performance/noise/sag? Liked & subbed. Looking forward to seeing what else you do with this beast.
Thanks Justin! No added noise at all, but there is a small bit of sag with the added weight on the rear even with my King standard height springs. Gotta keep in mind with the hitch, spare, and Wilco hitgate it's all around 150+ lbs in total on the rear end. If going this route I would recommend a 3/8" to 1/2" higher rear spacer as compare to the front.
Clean. Order extra pivot washers and bump stops and keep an eye on the powder coat or review coatings to prevent premature chips and rust Interesting detail regarding where the hitch receiver exits - up, instead of straight out Seemingly both options should be available from factory?
Great explanation. Thanks. If you threw a bike rack on it, it would come close to the tongue weight with a bike on it.. I wonder if anyone has done that.
That's a fair beef--that is a lot. Another option I just learned about is to take a "shaved" full sized tire and wheel and put that in the spare tire area of the vehicle. When you installed this, did it weigh the rear down? And did you have to lift the rear to "even" it out? We have two Foresters I'm wanting do this to. We have a 2009 and a 2020. You think I will also need to "even" it out if I add this to the rear? Your Forester looks awesome!
You need the factory fender flares! It'll complete the look, because Subaru IMO ruined the look with the recessed fenders or indentation! The Primitive Racing bull bar, would be nice too, I get a lot of complements and questions.
Do you think you'd be able to fit a folding rear cargo hitch basket to that extra hitch point? I'm debating about purchasing the spare tire carrier but I need it to be able to hold the basket. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
With the spare/fuel can mounted in the rear you'll lose about 75% of your backup camera view. Relocating it is an option that I'm rolling around, but not real worried about it at the moment.
I really like your tire rack and rotopax gas container set up well thought out. For the bracket for the rotopax for the vertical member bar where did you get that metal bracket and what is it called. Thanks in advance for your reply
Hey Man, really nice video and explanations. I'm trying to import the Highgate solo for Brazil, but my major concern is regarding the hitchgate installed in the car. Would you be able to make some video explaining how is it designed and where exactly was it fixed in the car???
Thanks for the video. I'm assuming the hitch-point on it is higher to not affect your departure angle negatively, being a high clearance version. Same level hitchpoint would affect your departure angle.

Also how does the alterations affect your fuel economy. Have a 2016 Forester looks like yours and really need better tires for my travels off the pavement.
How do you like the wheels thus far? I'm between these and the Sparco Terras. I'm a little concerned about the wheel quality with the wheels being so light.

Even so, I've already heard of guys using the Boxers in "rally" without issue. The only comment I hear from people is that they look like a bitch to clean... but I'm not taking this thing to car shows as a show car, I've never once got on my hands and knees to scrub these and I likely never will.

I did the hitch myself. Had to buy a die grinder to get the job done, but it went quick after I had the die grinder in hand. The dremel didn't have the juice to enlarge the holes in the frame for the hardware.
Do you have any up close images of the wheel studs with the wheel off? Mine just came in and I’m trying to get a better idea on how to mount the wheel.
